That&rsquo;s the indication of a report from Neowin, which suggests that Microsoft has Xbox 360 games running via a web browser over the cloud - and Xbox One games are next.</p> <p>This isn&rsquo;t the first we&rsquo;ve heard of Microsoft&rsquo;s cloud gaming ambitions. Last year, Microsoft <a href="http://www.neowin.net/news/report-microsoft-making-game-cloud-streaming-service">reportedly showed <em>Halo 4</em></a> running on an array of platforms at a company meeting, while just weeks ago, <a href="http://research.microsoft.com/apps/pubs/default.aspx?id=226843">a Microsoft Research project</a> surfaced that claimed to mask extensive cloud-based gaming lag via predictive technology.</p> <p>According to Neowin, Microsoft has the service running games at upwards of 60 frames per second, which paired with the predictive tech could deliver streamed games that perform quite similarly to a native download or disc. So it&#39;s giving them to you, free, even if you&#39;re on iOS and Android and not on the Windows Phone platform. Before Google came to dominate the free maps navigation space, Nokia Maps ruled the featurephone space. It purchased Navteq years ago, in a bid to make their maps the best you could get on mobile. The new Nokia Maps, for instance, will offer full map downloads as well as search that is usable even without an Internet connection.</p> <p>With more users, there is also a good opportunity to get useful feedback that could improve Nokia&#39;s location engine. Also in the works is a deal with Samsung to make mapping applications for its constantly-delayed new Tizen operating systems.</p> <p>What is certain though is that Nokia does have access to maps that are far superior to Apple&#39;s and years of experience in making offline maps for phones. We&#39;ll just have to see if Nokia can finally reclaim its map superiority in the smartphone space.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: </strong><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/nokia">What else is going on with Nokia?</a><br />[Source: <a href="http://gizmodo.com/free-offline-nokia-maps-are-coming-to-android-and-ios-1630419050" target="_blank">Gizmodo</a>]</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/tnMV_WcNrL0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> http://www.stuff.tv/sg/maps/nokia-making-its-offline-free-maps-available-ios-and-android/news#comments Maps Maps Navigation Nokia Thu, 04 Sep 2014 08:44:26 +0000 Erna Mahyuni 1446559 at http://www.stuff.tv Google Maps' hefty update showers cyclists with extra love http://www.stuff.tv/sg/google/google-maps-gets-hefty-update-and-some-extra-cyclist-love/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Cyclists can now see and compare elevation on different routes and avoid unnecessary climbs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="567" height="425" title="Google Maps gets hefty update and some extra cyclist love" alt="Google Maps gets hefty update and some extra cyclist love" src="/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/goog_maps.jpg" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>Oh look, it&#39;s another Google Maps update. Android Police has taken a video and even uploaded the APK for the latest version of Maps that&#39;s coming to Android-powered phones.</p> <p>This time, you&#39;ll really love it if you&#39;re a cyclist. Why so? Because it&#39;ll have elevation comparison. That might not be a big deal for drivers but for cyclists who need to expend extra effort to climb hills or steeper slopes, it makes the difference between a pleasurely ride and a knee-achingly painful journey.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/sg/users/erna-mahyuni" title="View user profile.">Erna Mahyuni</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Yes, you can ask your phone if you&#039;re there yet </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>What non-cyclists will embrace is the new, more interactive take on voice navigation. ETA for instance is no longer in bold, the Uber card shows up in the car tab, besides public transportation and walking. The voice icon will also now be seen in the search bar used to load Places. Speaking of Places, they now also appear in a slide-out navigation menu.</p> <p>While the update should eventually be making its way to Android phones, you can just skip the wait and&nbsp;<a href="http://www.androidpolice.com/2014/07/17/google-maps-updated-to-v8-2-with-biking-elevation-voice-actions-in-navigation-and-more-apk-download/" target="_blank">download the APK</a>&nbsp;straight from Android Police. Speaking of travelling abroad, Street View is now available for mobile so you can zoom into your next holiday destination.</p> <p>Of course, Nokia&#39;s Here applications has had offline maps since forever as well as turn-by-turn navigation but we&#39;re looking forward to proper traffic updates live on your Google mobile Maps without having to go on Waze. We&#39;d say the app is worth updating for the lane navigation alone.</p> <p>[Source: <a href="http://mashable.com/2014/05/06/google-maps-ios-3-0/" target="_blank">Mashable</a>]</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="Google Maps updates brings Street View, Uber integration and lots more" alt="Google Maps updates brings Street View, Uber integration and lots more" src="/sites/stuff.tv/files/Btw%20devices%20stuff.jpg" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/google/google-maps-updates-brings-street-view-uber-integration-and-lots-more/news" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/sg/google/google-maps-updates-brings-street-view-uber-integration-and-lots-more/news#comments Google Maps Maps Navigation Wed, 07 May 2014 03:52:28 +0000 Tein Hee Seow 1436681 at http://www.stuff.tv Travel back in time with Google Maps' Street View http://www.stuff.tv/sg/google/travel-back-in-time-with-google-maps-street-view/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Play spot the difference between time-lapsed pictures of the same location with Google&#039;s mapping service </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1241" height="698" title="Travel back in time with Google Maps&#039; Street View" alt="Travel back in time with Google Maps&#039; Street View" src="/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/Google%20Maps%20Street%20View.png" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>Take a trip back in time, and no we&rsquo;re not talking about the need for you to get into a time travel machine <em>Back to the Future</em> style.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/sg/users/hafizahosman" title="View user profile.">Hafizah Osman</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Google will soon add a new functionality on its <a href="http://maps.google.com" target="_blank">digital maps</a>&nbsp;that allows you to see what landmarks and neighbourhoods looked like at various points in the last seven years.</p> <p>The updated &lsquo;Street View&rsquo; feature can virtually bring you to the time where for example, Christchurch was a little beautiful town before a deadly earthquake rocked the city or the devastation wrought by the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami.</p> <p>When a time-lapsed snapshot is available on Google Street View, a tiny clock icon appears to the left corner of the current location picture.
