It&rsquo;s the same clear, bright and colourful 1.63in Super AMOLED touchscreen and the same sci-fi functionality. It reliably pulls in email, message and phone notifications from your smartphone via Bluetooth as well as playing music, counting steps and even measuring your heart rate.</p> <p>And best of all, it&rsquo;s the same 300mAh battery (and clip-on charging cradle). As on the Gear 2, battery easily lasts two to three days on one charge. Our Gear 2 Neo dropped around 30% a day unless we really hammered it.</p> <p>There are some differences. There&rsquo;s no camera on the Neo, but that&rsquo;s really no great loss. After the first heady snapping session, we pretty much forgot about using the cam on the Gear 2.</p> <p>We also got on a lot better with the auto screen-on function on the Neo than our Gear 2 unit, which is odd. A flick of the wrist activates the Neo&rsquo;s watchface around nine times out of ten - a significant improvement on the more expensive model.</p> <p>But the Neo is, as with the Gear 2, only compatible with select Samsung phones, while the likes of the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/pebble/pebble-steel/review" target="_blank">Pebble Steel</a> smartwatch play nice with all iOS and Android phones.</p> <p>And right now there&rsquo;s also a dearth of Gear apps - we really couldn&rsquo;t find anything we wanted to download to our Neo apart from Feedly. For now, Pebble is clearly ahead of Samsung here, with mapping, transport and smart home apps providing plenty of good reasons to jump on the smartwatch bandwagon.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/pebble/pebble-steel/review" target="_blank">Pebble Steel review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Samsung Gear 2 vs Gear Neo" alt="Samsung Gear 2 Neo review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Samsung-Galaxy-Gear-2-Neo-comparison_0.JPG?1397797922" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Neo materials do look and feel a little cheaper" alt="Samsung Gear 2 Neo review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Samsung-Galaxy-Gear-2-Neo-comparison-3.JPG?1397797922" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="The Neo loses the camera, but that&#039;s really not a loss" alt="Samsung Gear 2 Neo review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Samsung-Galaxy-Gear-2-Neo-comparison-2.JPG?1397797922" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="1200" height="900" title="It&#039;s the same screen on both devices" alt="Samsung Gear 2 Neo review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Samsung-Galaxy-Gear-2-Neo-comparison-1.JPG?1397797922" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Samsung Gear 2 Neo tech specs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><strong>Operating system</strong> -&nbsp;Tizen-based</p> <p><strong>Screen</strong> - 1.63in Super AMOLED with 320x320 resolution (278ppi)</p> <p><strong>Processor</strong> - 1 GHz dual-core processor</p> <p><strong>RAM</strong> - 512MB</p> <p><strong>Storage</strong> -&nbsp;4GB</p> <p><strong>Sensors</strong> - Accelerometer, Gyroscope, Heart Rate</p> <p><strong>Colours</strong> - Charcoal Black, Mocha Grey and Wild Orange</p> <p><strong>Dimensions/weight</strong> -&nbsp;37.9 x 58.8 x 10mm / 55g</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> It looks cheaper because it is </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Gear 2 looks stylish if you squint, but our Mocha Grey Neo has all the charm of an army watch. Both types of light wavelengths are absorbed at different levels depending on how saturated our blood cells are with oxygen molecules. &nbsp;Blood cells carrying less oxygen absorb more red light, allowing overall blood oxygen levels to be calculated.</p> <p>It&#39;s all rather clever, and while Apple certainly hasn&#39;t invented the technology, it will be the first company to wrap up all of these sensors into a single neat smartwatch package.</p> <p>Whether or not they&#39;ll make their way into the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-iphone-6/review" target="_blank">iPhone 6</a>&nbsp;remains to be seen, but we&#39;ll keep you updated with the latest news, as always.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-iwatch/review" target="_blank">Apple iWatch: price, specs, release date - everything we know</a></strong></p> <p>[<a href="http://appleinsider.com/articles/14/04/07/barclays-apples-iwatch-could-include-uv-light-exposure-sensor" target="_blank">Apple Insider</a>,&nbsp;<a href="http://www.silabs.com/products/sensors/infraredsensors/Pages/Si114x.aspx" target="_blank">Silicon Labs</a>]</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Just some red blood cells, doing their thing" alt="Apple iWatch&#039;s UV light sensor could stop you from turning into a red lobster on" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/red-blood-cells.jpg?1397006669" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple-iwatchs-uv-light-sensor-could-stop-you-turning-red-lobster-holiday/news" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple-iwatchs-uv-light-sensor-could-stop-you-turning-red-lobster-holiday/news#comments Apple Geek accessories iWatch Smartwatches Tue, 08 Apr 2014 10:05:58 +0000 Hafizah Osman 1435098 at http://www.stuff.tv Watch out Will.i.am – Samsung has a smartwatch that makes calls too http://www.stuff.tv/sg/samsung/watch-out-william-samsung-has-smartwatch-makes-calls-too/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> “Gear Solo” trademark application points to a wearable that has no need of buddying up to your phone </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Watch out Will.i.am – Samsung has a smartwatch that makes calls too" alt="Watch out Will.i.am – Samsung has a smartwatch that makes calls too" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/gear-2-neo-range.jpg?1397006777" /> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Black Eyed Peas frontman Will.i.am might be <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/fully-charged-webos-never-was-and-william-s-big-smartwatch-revealed/news">plotting</a> to bring the first call-making, non-smartphone-needing smartwatch to the world &ndash; but Samsung looks to be hot on his heels.</p> <p>According to Patently Apple, the company has applied to trademark the term &ldquo;Gear Solo&rdquo; in its native South Korea, with a view to bringing a SIM-toting smartwatch to market. &ldquo;Solo&rdquo;, of course, refers to the fact that the smartwatch, unlike current models like the Pebble, Sony Smartwatch and Samsung&rsquo;s own Galaxy Gear range, can connect to a mobile data network on its own.
