That&rsquo;s the report coming out of the Wall Street Journal, which says the acquisition is nearly complete.</p> <p>Why is a changing-of-the-hands important? Because Hutchinson Whampoa also owns Three, the #4 carrier in the land, and the combination of the two companies would make for the top wireless provider in the UK by subscriber count. It&rsquo;s unknown whether the companies would be properly merged or if they might aim to serve different customer bases, but consolidation of some sort seems likely.</p> <p>On that note: also reportedly near is a deal for BT to purchase EE, the current top wireless carrier, which means the mobile market is about to see one serious shake-up. That may be what&rsquo;s ahead, as The Wall Street Journal and The Information report that Google has worked out deals with major carriers to sell service under its own name.</p> <p>That means that Google wouldn&rsquo;t actually control or own the cellular service, but instead lease it out and rebrand it - and potentially offer different and better terms for customers. According to the reports, U.S. carriers Sprint and T-Mobile have agreed to offer their networks for Google to package and resell to customers, although it&rsquo;s unclear when such plans might unfold.</p> <p>The Wall Street Journal notes that Sprint executives in particular are concerned that Google will turn around and become a rival in the space in time, but Sprint apparently is able to renegotiate terms if Google brings on a wealth of customers. With Fiber, Google has shown that it wants to give people fantastic Internet service at reasonable prices, but we&rsquo;ll see if the same holds true for wireless service when it&rsquo;s on other companies&rsquo; networks.</p> <p>[Sources: <a href="http://www.wsj.com/articles/google-to-sell-wireless-service-in-deals-with-sprint-t-mobile-1421887967">The Wall Street Journal</a>, <a href="https://www.theinformation.com/Google-s-Next-Telecom-Move-Becoming-a-Wireless-Carrier">The Information</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/android/android-45/review">Android 5.0 Lollipop review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> New Battletoads teased by Xbox exec’s shirt </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Can we credit a t-shirt for rampant speculation about a classic video game&rsquo;s return? And it turns out that he&rsquo;s really, <em>really</em> removed from the equation. Because while he may have created the world and many of the characters, new owner Disney overruled his intentions for <em>Star Wars: The Force Awakens</em>.</p> <p>In Lucas&rsquo; mind, <em>Episode VII</em> would focus primarily on new characters, with old favorites like Luke, Leia, and Han coming secondary. CNET reports that crew members completed setting up the famous garage scene that Jobs and partner Steve Wozniak first set up shop in during the early days of Apple - and it&#39;s in the actual, real-life garage at Jobs&#39; one-time home in Palo Alto, California.</p> <p>Aaron Sorkin, recently of <em>The Social Network</em> and <em>The Newsroom</em> fame, penned the script, while <em>Slumdog Millionaire</em> director Danny Boyle is helming the film. According to Sorkin, the film won&rsquo;t be a comprehensive overview of Jobs&#39; professional rise - unlike the rough <em>Jobs</em> starring Ashton Kutcher - but rather focus on three key product launches that he oversaw: the Macintosh in 1984, the NeXT computer in 1988, and finally the iPod in 2001.</p> <p>Michael Fassbender is set to play Jobs, so at least the film has an excellent actor to anchor such a unique approach, while Seth Rogen is reportedly playing Wozniak, Jeff Daniels will portray former Apple CEO John Sculley, and Kate Winslet has taken an unspecified role.</p> <p>[Source: <a href="http://www.cnet.com/news/lights-camera-apple-filming-starts-for-new-steve-jobs-biopic/">CNET</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/fully-charged-michael-fassbender-play-steve-jobs-full-jurassic-world-trailer-and-gta5-leads-uk">Michael Fassbender to play Steve Jobs</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> New Rock Band game teased via survey </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Last week, Harmonix restarted the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/playstation-3/rock-band-releasing-first-new-downloadable-songs-nearly-two-years/news">release of new downloadable songs</a> for <em>Rock Band</em> on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 after nearly two years away, leading many to wonder if it was the first step towards properly reviving the franchise with a new-gen console entry.</p> <p>Well, the studio&rsquo;s new survey isn&rsquo;t going to dash those hopes. Offered to fans on Twitter on Friday, the survey inquires about users&#39; past series experience - but then switches gears and asks about which new systems they own, and if a new game were released, how they&rsquo;d want it to come (digital or physical, and game only or with instruments) and if they&rsquo;d pre-order such a game.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s still not an official confirmation of anything, obviously, but we doubt Harmonix would go live with something like this unless plans were seriously being considered - or finalized. Which, strangely enough, hasn&#39;t hurt the franchise too much to this point.</p> <p>Truth be told, <em>The Phantom Pain</em> is set in 1984, putting it almost a decade past the events of <em>Ground Zeroes</em>, but also about a decade before the classic <em>Metal Gear</em> from the 8-bit days.</p> <p>You&#39;ll take the role of the original Snake, AKA Naked Snake, AKA Big Boss, and now AKA Venom Snake (we guess), who starred in <em>Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater</em> and <em>Peace Walker</em>. And when it comes to presentation, parts of <em>The Phantom Pain</em> look downright stunning. </p> <p>It&#39;s not necessarily what you&#39;d expect, either. Sure, the character models and environments are impressively detailed, but it&#39;s the fantastic motion capture work that really stands out, with subtle and superbly nuanced animations. Yes, you&#39;re still controlling a highly skilled soldier on battlefields and putting a premium on unseen movements and quiet interactions. It&#39;s a stealth-action game, after all. But everything is taken to a whole new level, starting with the scale of the experience. </p> <p><em>The Phantom Pain</em> promises to be 200 times the size of <em>Ground Zeroes</em>, delivering open environments marked by dynamic weather and a day/night cycle. On one hand, that means now there&#39;s no set path for Snake to pursue: no perfectly-designed corridor to be led through, and we&#39;d guess very few ventilation shafts to crawl into, seeing as most of the game seems to take place outside. </p> <p>On the other hand, that means incredible freedom to tackle missions however you see fit. Some of the old rules apply: you can dive into hiding spots, use a cardboard box to sneak around, and knock on walls to draw guards near. And you can stick up guards rather than kill indiscriminately. But you can also now slide over to the side of a moving horse to remain unseen near enemies, or use giant balloons to lift unconscious guards, animals, and even vehicles out of the battlefield (this debuted in PSP entry <em>Peace Walker</em>). </p> <p>You can even call in items from Mother Base, as needed, which are dropped into the world via plane. Read, enjoy, but do <em>not</em> repeat.</p> <p class="p1">[Source: <a href="http://www.howtogeek.com/198622/heres-what-happens-when-you-install-the-top-10-download.com-apps/">How-To Geek</a>]</p> <p class="p1"><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/microsoft/6-things-we-love-about-windows-10-and-3-we-hate/feature">6 things we love about Windows 10 - and 3 we hate</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="706" title="Freeware calamity" alt="Freeware calamity" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/downloadcom-freeware.png?1421285648" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> http://www.stuff.tv/sg/grand-theft-auto-5/fully-charged-grand-theft-auto-v-delayed-again-pc-tesla-s-model-x-out-summer-and-#comments Cars Electric cars Gaming Grand Theft Auto 5 Robots Tesla Wed, 14 Jan 2015 07:30:00 +0000 Hafizah Osman 1457653 at http://www.stuff.tv Sinclair Spectrum Vega is bring ZXy back to gaming http://www.stuff.tv/sg/sinclair-spectrum-vega-bring-zxy-back-gaming/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> It’s a ZX Spectrum and 1,000 games stuffed inside a controller – and it’s made right here in Britain </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Sinclair Spectrum Vega is bring ZXy back to gaming" alt="Sinclair Spectrum Vega is bring ZXy back to gaming" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/sinclair-zx-spectrum-vega_0.png?1421198728" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>The ZX Spectrum is coming back &ndash; and this time it&rsquo;s a lot smaller and it&rsquo;s got 1,000 games crammed inside.</p> <p>Yes, it&rsquo;s the Sinclair Spectrum Vega, a games controller with ZX-inspired retro styling and the backing of original Spectrum inventor Sir Clive Sinclair. And we mean that literally: Sir Clive is a shareholder in Retro Computers, the Luton-based startup responsible for manufacturing and marketing the Speccy clone.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/sg/users/sam-kieldsen" title="View user profile.">Sam Kieldsen</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Made in Britain </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>And manufacturing will be done in the UK. Retro Computers today announced that it has contracted East Midlands firm SMS Electronics to build the Vega. Which feels right, given the essential Britishness of the Spectrum.</p> <p>The Vega is essentially a five-button gamepad that connects directly to your TV (via HDMI). It will come with around 1,000 classic Spectrum games built-in, with further titles available to download free-of-charge after launch. Retro Computers says the device will cost around &pound;100 at launch, which is scheduled for April 2015.</p> <p>We haven&rsquo;t used the Vega, but looking at it some potential criticisms do arise. The price could be seen as a little high, given the quality of the games you&rsquo;ll be getting (once you take off the rose-tinted spectacles, many Spectrum games are pretty dire compared with what&rsquo;s being released nowadays). And the lack of a full keyboard means games that require lots of text input &ndash; something like The Hobbit, for instance &ndash; will be essentially unplayable.</p> <p>The Spectrum Vega&rsquo;s makers are currently running an <a href="https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/sinclair-zx-spectrum-vega" target="_blank">Indiegogo campaign</a> to raise funds for production, but even pledging &pound;100 won&rsquo;t net you a Vega come launch day &ndash; it appears they&rsquo;ve sold out months ahead of launch. Looks like the initial production run of 1,000 models might need bolstering. In any case, the campaign has already hit its funding target, so you can expect the Vega to emerge as a real product in the coming months.</p> <p>[Source: <a href="http://retro-computers.co.uk/" target="_blank">Retro Computers</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/10-classic-coin-ops-you-have-play-right-now/feature">10 classic browser-based coin-ops you have to play right now</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/CN8aDkgqHn4" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> http://www.stuff.tv/sg/sinclair-spectrum-vega-bring-zxy-back-gaming/news#comments Gaming Tue, 13 Jan 2015 10:21:37 +0000 Hafizah Osman 1457548 at http://www.stuff.tv Fully Charged: The new Avengers: Age of Ultron trailer, a car is being 3D printed at the Detroit Auto Show, and man caught smuggling 94 iPhones against his body http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/fully-charged-new-avengers-age-ultron-trailer-car-being-3d-printed-detroit-auto-show-and-man-c <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> All the tech and gadget news you need to start the day off right </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Avengers: Age of Ultron" alt="Avengers: Age of Ultron" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/avengers-ageofultron-hulkbuster.jpg?1421198332" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/sg/users/andrew-hayward" title="View user profile.">Andrew Hayward</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Here’s the new Avengers trailer </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p class="p1">Can&rsquo;t wait to see the likely-biggest movie of the first 11 months of the year (until&nbsp;<em>Star Wars: The Force Awakens</em>)? It&rsquo;s made of ABS plastic with carbon fiber for strength, and it takes about 44 hours to print the 212 total layers. The end result is the core of the vehicle, which is then paired with the actual inner workings of a car (drivetrain, wiring, tyres, etc.) to produce a drivable vehicle.</p> <p class="p1">The company is also using the opportunity to announce its first two micro-factories, which will let buyers customize a vehicle and have it printed from scratch in very little time. They&rsquo;ll emerge first in the States, in Knoxville, Tennessee and at National Harbor outside Washington D.C. You can see their magic in action right now at the auto show - which might not look like much as of this writing, but it should be something special by the weekend.</p> <p class="p1">[Source: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2015/01/12/local-motors-3d-printed-car-strati-detroit-2015/">Autoblog</a>]</p> <p class="p1"><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/welcome-future-transport-3d-printed-car/news">Welcome to the future of transport - the 3D-printed car</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="797" title="Local Motors&#039; Strati (photo credit: Jeremy Korzeniewski, Autoblog)" alt="Local Motors&#039; Strati (photo credit: Jeremy Korzeniewski, Autoblog)" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/localmotors-strati-detroitautoshow.jpg?1421198332" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Man caught smuggling 94 iPhones </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p class="p1">Ever wondered what a suit of armor comprised entirely of iPhones would look like?
