The top of the first elastoplast felt more slippery than any touchscreen I&#39;ve used before (the ultrasonics can make the screen feel smoother than it is in real life), but the bottom slowed my finger almost to stopping, such was the change in friction. In many ways the demo is a little rough around the edges - the tablet needed to be plugged in to work, too, which suggests that either the demo eats a lot of power, or the prototype tablet is jury rigged together and the ultrasonic emitters aren&#39;t hooked up to the tablet&#39;s battery.</p> <p><iframe class="vine-embed" frameborder="0" height="480" src="https://vine.co/v/MKMl5lqDa9m/embed/simple" width="480"></iframe></p> <p>The technology currently works only with a single point of contact, too - the whole screen reacts to that point of contact, and feedback can&#39;t be more accurately localised&nbsp; - but it&#39;s very early days and will undoubtedly evolve. Down the line, a version that could replicate a two-thumb control pad on screen would transform mobile gaming.</p> <p>Fujitsu&#39;s track record with bringing its technology experiments to market, either in its own products on licensed to other vendors, is excellent - about 90% see manufacture. How is this possible? </strong><br />Haptics &ndash; a technology for which the tide of enthusiasm ebbs and flows with the passing seasons, largely unnoticed by the populace except for the different buzzy vibrations their smartphone makes while they type. But that&rsquo;s old haptics, this Fujitsu prototype &ndash; revealed at MWC &ndash; uses ultrasonics to make what you&rsquo;re touching on screen seem slippy or grippy, bumpy or rough. Will it misfire and reduce my fingers to atoms? </strong><br />Not likely, as the mere process of tricking your fingers into &lsquo;feeling&rsquo; harp strings or alligator scales uses a significant amount of energy &ndash;&nbsp;though Fujitsu says it has refined the technology to be workable in a smartphone or tablet.</p> <p><strong>So will I be able to feel the striations of the face of Bill Nighy in his latest vampire rom-com? </strong><br />Sadly, no. The image that you&rsquo;re viewing will need to contain the information that the tablet uses to recreate the surface and, as open as Hollywood is to integrating new technologies, we can&rsquo;t see them pandering to the handful of Fujitsu feel-o-tablet users.
