Bang & Olufsen’s Essence is a one-touch remote that’ll simplify music playback like Sonos does

This pretty little thing is going to give the dominant music streamer maker something to worry about

We tend to be wary when companies use the word revolutionise to describe its products and services. Bang & Olufsen’s BeoSound Essence system is an exception.

For a company that delivers speakers that turn your living room into a futuristic-looking space, we can believe its claim. Not to mention, its attention to sound quality is so strict, which was why B&O chose to deliver hi-res audio on the less crowded 5.2-5.8 GHz wireless range only recently with its new range of wireless speakers.

Its new BeoSound Essence system, announced at CES 2014, is a natural extension of B&O’s interest in the wireless segment. Essence consists of two components - a wall-mountable circular aluminum remote and a media box that supports AirPlay and DLNA streaming. The latter is also integrated with Spotify Connect, QPlay and if you’re feeling random, an internet radio for you to live dangerously in the world of music. Any existing B&O speakers, both wired and wireless, can be connected to the system.

Once these components are connected, the magic happens. The remote, acting like light switches, turns the system on or off, changes the volume, skips tracks and switches radio stations. Re-activating the system won’t reset everything - it remembers exactly where you left off and resumes playback. Multiple remotes can be connected to the system, so you can litter them in each room and trigger your playlist when the fancy kicks in.

This is a B&O system, so don’t expect it to be budget-friendly. The system costs US$995 (S$1266), and each additional control unit will empty US$200 (S$254) from your wallet. B&O is expecting a Spring shipping date, with more details to be revealed nearer to its launch date.
