You know, the type to reach for a phantom steering wheel should you stray too close to a hedge or the kind that frantically rams their foot into the carpet should the speedometer read anything above 30mph.</p> <p>Well, Jaguar could make this type of &#39;panicky passenger&#39; technology standard on future models should its &#39;Bike Sense&#39; research get the green light for production.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/sg/users/leonpoultney" title="View user profile.">Leon Poultney</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Jaguar claims the sensor technology can determine when a cyclist or motorcyclist is approaching and the vehicle will then emit a sound to alert the driver to potential danger.</p> <p>But rather than emitting just any sound - an irritating bong, for instance - Bike Sense uses noises the brain instantly relates to vulnerable road users.</p> <p>So, if a cyclist pulls up at the rear of the vehicle, Bike Sense will sound a little bicycle bell via the audio system through the speaker nearest to the bike.</p> <p>Similarly, if a motorcycle approaches in the driver&#39;s blind spot, a horn will sound from a speaker near the driver&#39;s right shoulder.</p> <p>To ensure future drivers won&#39;t ever fail to spot another vulnerable road user again, the top of the car seat can even extend, like some kind of automotive spirit, and &#39;tap&#39; the driver on the shoulder should Bike Sense detect a cyclist or motorcyclist attempting to come past the vehicle on the inside.</p> <p>Jaguar says the idea is that the driver will then instinctively look over their shoulder to identify the potential hazard.</p> <p>The system can even warn a driver not to open his or her door when a cyclist is passing via a vibrating door handle and flashing LEDs.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/_rw3Cia9WZ0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Researchers are also keen to see how motorists react to different light sources, so Bike Sense includes a matrix of LED lights on the window sills, dashboard and windscreen pillars, which glow amber and then red as the bike approaches.</p> <p>When coupled with the car&#39;s built-in camera and sensor technology, the LEDs will strobe and pulse to highlight the direction the bike is taking.</p> <p>Dr Wolfgang Epple, Director of Research and Technology, Jaguar Land Rover, said: &ldquo;Human beings have developed an instinctive awareness of danger over thousands of years.</p> <p>&ldquo;Bike Sense takes us beyond the current technologies of hazard indicators and icons in wing mirrors, to optimising the location of light, sound and touch to enhance this intuition.&quot;</p> <p>But what if the driver decides to visit London and is overwhelmed by the swarm of pedestrians, cyclists and motorcycles? According to researchers, the system will prioritise the nearest hazards and only highlight those whose paths conflict with the car, so motorists aren&#39;t bombarded with noises and lightshows.</p> <p>And, should the driver decide to ignore the warnings and try to drive through a busy pedestrian crossing, the system can also send a vibration through the accelerator pedal - although Jaguar is keen to point out the driver can override the system at any point.</p> <p>Elements of the research will be brought into production within the next two years, according to a Jaguar spokesperson. The original Ford GT rolled off production lines in limited numbers in 2005. It packed a whopping 6.2-litre V8, muscular styling and the sort of track that made it almost impossible to drive down any normal street. There were also the original GT40s, built in the 1960s for endurance racing, but we won&#39;t bore you with that.</p> <p><strong>Why has Ford decided to release a new GT? </strong></p> <p>Good question, perhaps it has something to do with the rapidly falling price of fuel, or simply because company bigwigs know that halo models such as this attract young, wealthy customers to the brand. You could also be mistaking the latest iteration for the 2012 Acura NSX Concept, which looked shockingly similar to what you see in front of you. But this is the final, production version of Honda&#39;s latest sports car... we promise.</p> <p><strong>But isn&#39;t that an Acura badge on the front? </strong></p> <p>Yes it is, but ignore that because Acura is just Honda&#39;s fancy badge that it likes to stick to American things. When it comes to SG, it will wear a Honda badge.</p> <p><strong>Alright, alright. But what&#39;s all the fuss about anyway? </strong></p> <p>The second generation NSX been in the making for more than three years, so&nbsp;now that it&#39;s finally here, you really need to&nbsp;get pumped! </p> <p><strong>Pumped?</strong></p> <p>Seriously, it&#39;s a 550bhp rocket that&#39;s not only powered by a mid-mounted V6 engine (like all good performance machines) but that also benefits from two electric motors that are bolted to the front wheels. The result is &#39;instantaneous&#39; torque and ridiculously big grins on driver&#39;s faces.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><strong>Wasn&#39;t the old NSX a bit of a weapon around the track? </strong></p> <p>Too right, it could positively spank more expensive supercars around any circuit when placed in the right hands. The latest iteration looks set to be a bit of a demon too, as it features a trick torque vectoring system, brilliantly labelled Super-Handling All-Wheel-Drive, which is aided by the electric motors. </p> <p><strong>What on earth does that mean?&nbsp;</strong></p> <p>Basically, the electric motors in the front wheels can provide different levels of torque depending on the levels of grip, helping wannabe racers around corners. It&#39;s also bolstered by a bunch of chassis modes that can transform the new NSX from comfy cruiser into all-out racer at the press of a button. </p> <p><strong>A bit like a mini-Porsche 918 Spyder, then? </strong></p> <p>Sort of. It can silently cruise around on battery power alone for short distances, much like the aforementioned Porker, and it has wheels but that&#39;s where the similarities end. It&rsquo;s made of ABS plastic with carbon fiber for strength, and it takes about 44 hours to print the 212 total layers. The end result is the core of the vehicle, which is then paired with the actual inner workings of a car (drivetrain, wiring, tyres, etc.) to produce a drivable vehicle.</p> <p class="p1">The company is also using the opportunity to announce its first two micro-factories, which will let buyers customize a vehicle and have it printed from scratch in very little time. They&rsquo;ll emerge first in the States, in Knoxville, Tennessee and at National Harbor outside Washington D.C. The old push-rod suspension has been replaced by large, independent springs to soak up the slams, the tubular chassis has been reinforced and the road tyres have been replaced by chunky, knobbly fellas for superior grip.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><strong>Is it road legal?&nbsp;</strong></p> <p>Yes, it can be specified with the required indicators, lights and numberplates and Ariel is confident that the rear-wheel-drive machine will be fast on road, too. Customers will also be able to personalise their Nomads with several wheel, body and engine cover colours, as well as niceties such as a windscreen and windscreen wipers.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>That&#39;s a helluva lot of monies...&nbsp;</strong></p> <p>Yes it is. But if you&#39;re really desperate for off-road thrills, you can scour the classifieds for an old Land Rover Defender at half the price. It won&#39;t look as rad and will likely smell like a wet labrador though.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/hottest-stuff-2014/feature">The hottest Hot Stuff of 2014</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1201" height="900" title="Ariel Nomad" alt="Hates the school-run, loves the sand dunes" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/ariel-nomad-2-1.jpg?1421650081" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> http://www.stuff.tv/sg/ariel-atoms-mucky-brother-wants-eat-dirt-breakfast/news#comments Cars Hot Stuff Fri, 09 Jan 2015 17:14:00 +0000 Elissa Loi 1457320 at http://www.stuff.tv CES 2105: The Mercedes-Benz F 015 is an autonomous piece of art straight out of a science-fiction film http://www.stuff.tv/sg/mercedes-benz/ces-2015/ces-2105-mercedes-benz-f-015-autonomous-piece-art-straight-outta-science-fict <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> It has been labelled &#039;the ultimate mobile home&#039;, in the nicest possible way </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Merc&#039;s future car is an autonomous luxury pimp pod" alt="Mercedes-Benz F 015" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/14C1450_003.JPG?1420678960" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>Where is your third space? The high-voltage battery in the i8 can be charged in just two hours (similar to a wired charge) and the technology even works in the snow or wet.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/ces-2015/ces-2015-what-expect-best-gadgets-and-tech/feature">All the latest news from CES 2015</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="901" title="Ease the strain on the grid with next-gen home charging " alt=" CES 2015: BMW reveals the next generation of navigation and more" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/P90129260_highRes.jpg?1420600032" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> http://www.stuff.tv/sg/bmw/ces-2015/ces-2015-bmw-reveals-next-generation-navigation-car-unlocking-credit-card-and-much-more#comments BMW Cars CES 2015 Tue, 06 Jan 2015 16:28:49 +0000 Hafizah Osman 1456898 at http://www.stuff.tv Updated Tesla Roadster now good for 400-miles on a single charge http://www.stuff.tv/sg/tesla/updated-tesla-roadster-now-good-400-miles-single-charge/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Musk&#039;s Lotus-based sports car receives battery and aerodynamic upgrades </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Tesla Roadster: now good for 400-miles of open-top thrills " alt="Tesla Roadster: now good for 400-miles of open-top thrills " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/HOTSTUFF-LOGO-placement-%281%29.jpg?1420594172" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/sg/users/leonpoultney" title="View user profile.">Leon Poultney</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><strong>Hang on, isn&#39;t the Roadster old news? </strong></p> <p>It has been a long time since anything has been mentioned about the all-electric two-seater; even Tesla&#39;s UK website buries the model at the very bottom of its homepage, but Mr Musk has got news.</p> <p><strong>What is it then? </strong></p> <p>The Tesla Roadster 3.0, as it has been dubbed, will now eke out 400 miles from a single charge thanks to a 50% improvement to range. This is due to a new 70kW battery pack, which stores 31% more energy, and new aerodynamic packaging that reduces drag by 15%. Fresh tyres, wheels and bearings also help cut out rolling resistance, meaning the latest version is a slippery devil.</p> <p><strong>All of the old Tesla Roadster owners must be gutted&hellip;</strong></p> <p>Ah but that&#39;s where you&#39;re wrong, because customers with previous versions of the car will be contacted and offered the upgrade package, although a price for that is yet to be determined. Tesla says it&#39;s as simple as whacking in a new battery pack, tweaking a few body panels and adding those super-smooth wheels and tyres.</p> <p><strong>It all sounds great in theory, but will it work in practice? </strong></p> <p>The Musk-meister is confident that the Roadster 3.0 will actually drive 400-miles on a single charge. In fact, he will be demonstrating the car in the real world during a non-stop drive from San Francisco to Los Angeles later this month.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/hottest-stuff-2014/feature">The hottest Hot Stuff of 2014</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> http://www.stuff.tv/sg/tesla/updated-tesla-roadster-now-good-400-miles-single-charge/news#comments Cars Hot Stuff Tesla Tue, 06 Jan 2015 11:51:31 +0000 Hafizah Osman 1456892 at http://www.stuff.tv CES 2015: Parrot RNB6 brings Android Auto and Apple CarPlay into almost any motor http://www.stuff.tv/sg/parrot/ces-2015/ces-2015-parrot-rnb6-brings-android-auto-and-apple-carplay-almost-any-motor/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> This dashboard infotainment system is half the thickness and weight of a standard 2-DIN setup, and integrates with a dashcam </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="CES 2015: Parrot RNB6 brings Android Auto and Apple CarPlay into almost any car" alt="CES 2015: Parrot RNB6 brings Android Auto and Apple CarPlay into almost any car" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/parrot-rnb6.jpg?1420508204" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>Parrot has unveiled its latest in-car infotainment system at CES 2015 &ndash; and it&rsquo;s a bit of a stunner.</p> <p>Codenamed the RNB6, the system runs on Android 5.0 Lollipop, but offers complete compatibility with both Google Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, so whether you favour an Android phone or an iOS device you&rsquo;re covered.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/sg/users/sam-kieldsen" title="View user profile.">Sam Kieldsen</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The system&rsquo;s sensors and connectors give the user access to a range of services and features, including navigation, hands-free phone calls and voice-controlled apps, music, radio and satnav. With both parties alerted simultaneously to the impending threat, the hope is that both will have enough time to slow down and/or dodge the collision.</p> <p class="p1">It adds an extra layer of smart tech to help both drivers and cyclists react to dangerous situations, and it can be particularly useful when it comes to blind spots or unseen threats obscured by traffic or darkness.</p> <p class="p1">Questions remain: notably, will this kind of system be open enough to work with a wide array of cars, phones, apps, and helmets, or will market segmentation diminish its safety appeal? And what of cyclists who refuse to wear safety gear? It&rsquo;s simply a concept for now, but it&rsquo;s a step in the right direction towards using tech to improve everyone&rsquo;s safety on the road.</p> <p class="p1"><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/volvo/new-volvo-xc90-say-hello-safest-suv-ever/feature">New Volvo XC90: Say hello to the safest SUV ever</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="675" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/volvo-bikesafety2.jpg?1420334558" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/volvo/ces-2015/volvo-seeks-end-car-bike-collisions-wearable-tech/news" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/sg/volvo/ces-2015/volvo-seeks-end-car-bike-collisions-wearable-tech/news#comments Bikes Cars CES 2015 Volvo Sat, 03 Jan 2015 11:30:01 +0000 Elissa Loi 1456591 at http://www.stuff.tv
