If you&rsquo;re a carrier, however, the Apple SIM looks more like an attack on your entire business model, because it wrests control further away from you and places it more in the hands of device owners.</p> <p>Imagine their horror: a loss of income from roaming fees, and customers easily able to switch to a rival service in their location as and when they choose.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="We&#039;re all going on a summer holiday..." alt="We&#039;re all going on a summer holiday..." src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/ipad-air-2-01.jpg?1414727860" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> iPhones next? </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>It&rsquo;s perhaps for this reason that attempts by Stuff to get comments from UK operators have to date been met with barely more than stony silence; at the time of writing only a single UK carrier (EE) has signed on.</p> <p>Meanwhile, in the US, AT&amp;T is reportedly locking the Apple SIM to its network, rather defeating its purpose. (Somewhat petulantly, it also vanishes as a future option should you instead choose Sprint or T-Mobile.) Elsewhere, support is quite literally non-existent &mdash; this is a UK (barely) and USA thing for now.</p> <p>Really, though, it&rsquo;s what happens next that&rsquo;s more interesting. What will carriers do if those on board with the Apple SIM end up getting a flood of new business, purely from being an option when someone fires up their shiny new iThing? And what if Apple deems its iPad experiment to be a success and then expands the Apple SIM to off-contract iPhones?</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<strong><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/better-or-worse-apple-s-ipad-line-shows-its-now-very-different-company/feature" target="_blank">For better or worse, Apple&rsquo;s iPad line-up shows it&#39;s now a very different company</a></strong></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="604" height="453" title="Could the iPhone be next in line for an Apple SIM?" alt="Could the iPhone be next in line for an Apple SIM?" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/iphone-6_1.jpg?1414727860" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> The end of the SIM card? </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Fast forward a couple of years, and it&rsquo;s conceivable to imagine iPads and iPhones that don&rsquo;t even have SIM slots. Everything would be sealed within the device itself.</p> <p>Naturally, people would continue to freak out, fuming carriers joined by a relatively small number of frothing users who swear by being able to choose from a collection of SIMs located about their person. But technology always marches on. We lost the floppy drive and the optical drive is not long for this world; elsewhere, computer and mobile hardware continues its inevitable shift towards &lsquo;appliance&rsquo; &mdash; sealed units lacking internal expansion. Maybe the humble SIM is now also on borrowed time, set to disappear entirely.</p> <p>This is perhaps a step too far, and Apple might be wiser to stick for a while with the more comfortable compromise of a replaceable Apple SIM. A modicum of extensibility and choice is always a good thing, after all, even if many people don&rsquo;t take advantage of it; but decent default set-ups for the consumer are better.</p> <p>Regardless, the Apple SIM could be a big win for everyone if enough carriers swallow their pride and embrace change &mdash; but, as ever, that&rsquo;s a very big &lsquo;if&rsquo;.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/shopping-gadgets-tyranny-choice/feature" target="_blank">Shopping for gadgets and the tyranny of choice</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Going, going... gone?" alt="Going, going... gone?" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/nano-sim.jpg?1414727856" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-legacy-url"> <div class="field-label">Legacy URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> apple/opinion-apple-sim-freaking-everyone-out-and-s-good-thing/feature </div> </div> </div> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/opinion-apple-sim-freaking-everyone-out-and-s-good-thing/feature" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/opinion-apple-sim-freaking-everyone-out-and-s-good-thing/feature#comments Apple iPad Air 2 Opinion Tablets Thu, 30 Oct 2014 16:53:48 +0000 Tein Hee Seow 1451863 at http://www.stuff.tv Tim Cook on Apple Watch: “You’re going to wind up charging it daily” http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/tim-cook-apple-watch-you-re-going-wind-charging-it-daily/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> A rare interview with the Apple CEO sheds light on the smartwatch’s battery life – and more besides </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Tim Cook on Apple Watch: “You’re going to wind up charging it daily”" alt="Tim Cook on Apple Watch: “You’re going to wind up charging it daily”" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/apple-watch-edition.jpg?1414546832" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>Apple CEO Tim Cook doesn&rsquo;t grant many interviews, so when he does take the hot seat there&rsquo;s always a lot of interest in what he has to say.</p> <p>In this case &ndash; an on-stage grilling at the Wall Street Journal&rsquo;s global tech conference &ndash; Cook spoke about the upcoming Apple Watch&rsquo;s battery life, Apple Pay, the company&rsquo;s plans to reinvent television and its attitude to customer privacy.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/sg/users/sam-kieldsen" title="View user profile.">Sam Kieldsen</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Time for TV? </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Cook also confirmed that Apple has plans for television. There&rsquo;s no noticeable tweaks to the iPad Mini&rsquo;s screen tech. Whites are still printer paper-pure, contrast is excellent and colours are mostly accurate and appealing. We say mostly because there are still a few hues, reds in particular, that both the iPad Air and even tablets like the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/amazon/kindle-fire-hdx/review">Kindle Fire HDX</a> pick up that the iPad Mini misses. Still, it&rsquo;s not something every user will spot and colour reproduction is more than good enough for Netflix and the web. This tablet is as smooth as we&rsquo;ve seen from Apple, with no stutters or lag. Still, spec fans will be disappointed that the iPad Mini 3 misses out on the A8X processor and M8 motion co-processor, the brains behind the iPad Air 2. In time, we might see more games and video editing apps that make use of this extra grunt. For now, we&rsquo;re not complaining too much.&nbsp;</p> <p>For stamina, at least, the iPad Mini 3 just about matches the bigger Cupertino tablet. It&rsquo;s faster and more accurate than when it was first introduced and still just as easy to set up.&nbsp;</p> <p>So what can you do with it? First up, replace your pin code to unlock the iPad, a feature Samsung has added to smartphones such as the Galaxy S5, albeit in a slightly less elegant implementation. Then there&rsquo;s fingerprint authentication for iTunes and App Store purchases, which is a nice timesaver that lets you wave bye-bye to entering your password every time.</p> <p>Apple Pay, only available in the US for now, adds support for lots more online transactions&nbsp;- including booking Uber cabs. The additions are welcome though, both in terms of ironing out bugs in iOS 8 and adding long-hyped productivity features such as syncing files, links and messages&nbsp;with Yosemite (on MacBooks and iMacs)&nbsp;via&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/imac/how-answer-calls-and-messages-across-your-mac-ipad-and-iphone-continuity/feature">Continuity</a>&nbsp;when logged into iCloud.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE</strong>:<strong><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/ios-8/review"> iOS 8 review&nbsp;</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="4000" height="3000" title="Touch ID set up takes seconds " alt="Apple iPad Mini 3 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/ipad%20mini%20review%20finger.jpg?1414576164" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Looks like iOS 7 but lots more functionality " alt="Apple iPad Mini 3 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/ipad%20mini%20review%20iOS.jpg?1414576164" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="4000" height="3000" title="The iPad still has the best optimised apps " alt="Apple iPad Mini 3 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/ipad-mini-3-review-apps.png?1414576164" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> If you want more than 32GB, you need an iPad Mini 3 </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>That&rsquo;s right. The threads have gotten pretty popular, with one already garnering 9,000 views and 60 replies.</p> <p>The thing is, apparently the users with problems tend to be those with the 128GB iPhone 6 Plus and have installed more than 700 apps. Let&#39;s just let that sink in now: 700 apps? Where would someone find time to use 700? Anyhow, another thing noted is that the crashes happen randomly even without using the phone.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/sg/users/erna-mahyuni" title="View user profile.">Erna Mahyuni</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Too many apps spoil the iPhone? </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>What is causing the crashes? Some are blaming the recent iOS 8.1 update and some are wondering if that maybe it&#39;s app incompatibility with the latest version of iOS.</p> <p>Some users have managed to get their iPhones replaced or exchanged though some are still waiting for Apple to get back to them about possible repairs or reparations.</p> <p>Apple has not commented as yet on the issue though perhaps this would be something they had not anticipated. In the past, with 64GB being the size cap users were not as keen to keep every single app they downloaded. When you only had 16GB of space, it was even more imperative to not keep an app around if it wasn&#39;t needed or used on a regular basis.</p> <p>The new larger storage space means you have people who don&#39;t want to delete apps at all. Is the iPhone 6 Plus unable to deal with so many apps on one phone? We&#39;ll just have to wait until Apple figures that one out.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:</strong> <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/apple-iphone-6l/review" target="_blank">What we think of the iPhone 6 Plus</a></p> <p>[Source: <a href="http://appleinsider.com/articles/14/10/23/iphone-6-plus-users-report-persistent-unexplained-crashing-issues-possibly-tied-to-large-app-libraries" target="_blank">Appleinsider</a>]</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/A4zs3D_EEYA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/iphone-6-plus-users-complain-crashes-could-just-be-too-many-apps/news#comments Apple iOS 8 iPhone 6 Plus Fri, 24 Oct 2014 04:52:11 +0000 Erna Mahyuni 1451239 at http://www.stuff.tv Using your iPad Air 2 as a camera is fine, and here’s why http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/using-your-ipad-air-2-camera-fine-and-here-s-why/feature <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Ignore the tech snobs — if you want to use your iPad as a camera, go for it, says Craig Grannell </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Using your iPad Air 2 as a camera is fine, and here’s why" alt="Using your iPad Air 2 as a camera is fine, and here’s why" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/ipad-air-2-camera-02.jpg?1414026624" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>During Apple&rsquo;s <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/6-things-you-need-know-todays-apple-launch/news">recent event</a>, VP Philip Schiller made quite a big deal about the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/ipad-air-2-revealed-its-so-thin-you-might-cut-yourself-holding-it/news">iPad Air 2</a>&rsquo;s camera.</p> <p>&ldquo;Perhaps the feature people love most about their iPads is the camera,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo; Some people have been surprised by that, but it really makes a lot of sense.&rdquo;</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/sg/users/craig-grannell" title="View user profile.">Craig Grannell</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 1. However, while this is often because it makes for a clickbait headline, many within the industry remember a time when Apple really was doomed.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/sg/users/craig-grannell" title="View user profile.">Craig Grannell</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Before Steve Jobs returned to the company, Apple was haemorrhaging money. It had a bloated product line and was obsessed with doing too much by itself &mdash; proprietary <em>everything</em> &mdash;&nbsp;and yet paid little attention to the buying user experience. If you were one of the rapidly diminishing number of people who actually wanted to buy a new Mac instead of a Windows PC, you were faced with a wall of Performas and Power Macintoshes &mdash; a bafflingly complex matrix of products with so much overlap that the best way to select your next machine was probably to pin Apple&rsquo;s product chart on a wall and lob a dart at it.</p> <p>Jobs &lsquo;thought different&rsquo;. He took a knife to Apple&rsquo;s products and didn&rsquo;t so much trim the fat as hack off hunks of meat until all that remained was the simplest and most streamlined product matrix you&rsquo;d ever seen. The idea was Apple would have only one &lsquo;consumer&rsquo; and one &lsquo;professional&rsquo; product within &lsquo;desktop&rsquo; and &lsquo;notebook&rsquo; slots, which became the iMac, Power Mac, iBook and PowerBook.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Over time, Apple as a company evolved further, embracing additional key aspects of personal computing that grabbed the imagination of the consumer, but it never lost its sense of focus. As Jobs stated during a Macworld event, &ldquo;focus is about saying no,&rdquo; even if that &ldquo;pisses off people&rdquo;. Hence, Apple continued to release what it thought its consumers&nbsp;<em>needed</em>&nbsp;rather than what they thought they&nbsp;<em>wanted</em>, restricting choice and providing only the best options.</p> <p>This notion continued as Apple shifted its own focus towards appliance computing: the iPhone and the iPad. But even as Apple&rsquo;s product line diversified, its products could still all fit on a desk. Naturally, pundits rallied against this line of thinking, arguing Apple was denying consumers &lsquo;choice&rsquo;, compared to the plentiful ranges provided by rivals, but Apple was really making things easy. As numerous studies have shown, people really aren&rsquo;t great at making choices &mdash; especially when faced with a huge number of options.</p> <p>In the context of Apple and choice, the iPad is an interesting case, and&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/6-things-you-need-know-todays-apple-launch/news">recent events</a>&nbsp;highlight how Apple is, for better or worse, now very clearly transforming into a different company from the one Steve Jobs ran. At first, the iPad was just the iPad. You chose an amount of storage, decided whether you wanted 3G, and away you went. Gradually, colour entered the mix, and then the iPad mini. But even last year, the main choice for the consumer was size: did you want the iPad Air or the iPad mini? For the most part, the machines were identical, so the main decision you had to make was relatively simple.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/apple-ipad-air-2/review" target="_blank">Apple iPad Air 2 hands-on review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/H8eP99neOVs" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="At first, the iPad was just the iPad." alt="At first, the iPad was just the iPad." src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/ipad-first-gen.jpg?1413946791" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Fast forward to last week&#39;s Apple event. Choice is now abundant in the new iPad line-up, but simplicity has been obliterated. Alongside the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/apple-ipad-air-2/review" target="_blank">iPad Air 2</a> and <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/6-things-you-need-know-todays-apple-launch/news" target="_blank">iPad mini 3</a> sit last year&rsquo;s models, the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/apple-ipad-5/review" target="_blank">iPad Air</a> and the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/apple-ipad-mini-2-retina/review" target="_blank">iPad mini 2</a> (previously known as the iPad mini with Retina display); the original iPad mini also lurks in the line-up. So now there are three iPad minis and two iPad Airs; additionally, the Air (2) and mini (3) no longer have parity &mdash;&nbsp;they boast different chips and capabilities.</p> <p>The new iPad mini 3 is simply an iPad mini 2, but with TouchID, for an extra S$140. But the iPad mini 2 only comes in 16 and 32 GB flavours, whereas the iPad mini 3 comes in 16, 64 and 128 GB options (but not 32). Similarly, the Air and Air 2 clash, Apple&rsquo;s&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/apple-pay-more-pay-apple/feature">cynical upsell decision on new kit</a>&nbsp;making the 16 GB iPad Air 2 pricier than the 32 GB iPad Air.</p> <p>All this adds up to more choice, but also more confusion for the consumer, now faced with five models, with overlapping features and capacities. And sowing the seeds of buyer&rsquo;s doubt sometimes means baffled customers simply walk out of a store with nothing at all. It also erodes a differentiator Apple had compared to the competition: the simplicity and elegance of the buying experience.</p> <p>There are of course logical&nbsp;<em>business</em>&nbsp;reasons why Apple&rsquo;s made this decision. With the holiday season coming up, Apple&rsquo;s now covering more price-points, using older technology to combat cheaper Android tablets. It has the potential for wider sales, perhaps grabbing customers who might have plumped for a Kindle Fire. But bet-hedging with an overly complex line-up doesn&rsquo;t show focus, and this is a slippery slope Apple&rsquo;s been down before, only this time Steve Jobs isn&rsquo;t around to say no. Someone else on Apple&rsquo;s executive team should instead.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/ipad-air-vs-ipad-air-2-should-you-upgrade/news" target="_blank">iPad Air vs iPad Air 2: should you upgrade?</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Two&#039;s company, three&#039;s a crowd" alt="Two&#039;s company, three&#039;s a crowd" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/ipad-family.jpg?1413946791" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/better-or-worse-apple-s-ipad-line-shows-its-now-very-different-company/feature#comments Apple iPad iPad Air 2 iPad Mini iPad Mini 3 Tue, 21 Oct 2014 11:27:02 +0000 Elissa Loi 1451036 at http://www.stuff.tv Apple debuts the iPad Air 2 and all the other news you’ve missed http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/apple-debuts-ipad-air-2-and-all-other-news-you-ve-missed/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Wake up, plug in, and have a read of our morning news round up </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="604" height="453" title="Apple debuts the iPad Air 2 and all the other news you’ve missed" alt="Apple debuts the iPad Air 2 and all the other news you’ve missed" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/1_15.jpg?1413946177" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>It may be a public holiday today, bit that shouldn&rsquo;t stop you from keeping abreast of all the latest scoops and product releases in the market. It&rsquo;s comfortable to hold, being light (465g) and super-skinny (6.6mm). In short, it&#39;s the best looking, best-feeling tablet that Samsung has ever released, though it&#39;s still not quite at the farthest end of the premium table.</p> <p>By contrast, Apple&rsquo;s iPads have always felt absurdly solid, and the iPad Air 2 is a truly stunning piece of engineering. Thinner than its predecessor at just 6.1mm, two stacked are roughly as thick as the original iPad.</p> <p>Despite its slightly svelter nature, there&rsquo;s no sense of &lsquo;bendgate&rsquo; here, and the metal-made tablet clocks in a few grams under Samsung&rsquo;s, at 437g. It&rsquo;s a 10.5-inch 2560x1600 Super AMOLED affair that&rsquo;s crisp and sharp at 288ppi - good luck hunting for pixels - with great vivid colours and excellent viewing angles. If the colour saturation threatens to set your retinas alight, you can dial it down a bit too, which is handy.</p> <p>Usefully, the white balance can automatically adjust to take into account your local lighting conditions. However, the display&rsquo;s aspect ratio&rsquo;s widescreen nature might not be everyone&#39;s cup of tea, even if it is great for movies.</p> <p>The iPad Air 2 at a glance is identical to the original &mdash; a 9.7-inch 2048x1536 screen at 264ppi, which was no slouch on the original model. However, Apple&rsquo;s made improvements, bonding the LCD, glass and touch sensor, eliminating the air gap entirely. This not only makes the tablet a touch thinner, but makes the screen more vibrant; there&rsquo;s also a new coating to reduce reflections. The aspect ratio is also better suited to a wider range of tasks, even if it&rsquo;s sub-optimal for movies (in that you get black bars).</p> <p>The whites on the iPad are a little purer, and the colours are also slightly more realistic.</p> <p><em><strong>Winner: Draw. New Share sheets, iCloud Drive, and TouchID all combine to make for a potentially great future for iPad users, but developers must capitalise on them first. (Apple naturally promises the bugs from iOS 8.0 have been squashed.)</p> <p>By contrast, Samsung&rsquo;s tablet runs Android 4.4.2 with TouchWiz welded to it. Samsung only offers you 16GB or 32GB, but you can shove in a micro SD card up to a massive 128GB to expand your storage. Hurrah!</p> <p>Elsewhere, both devices offer fingerprint-scanners, with the iPad Air 2 getting the TouchID system introduced with last year&rsquo;s iPhone. This might seem like a gimmick, but when the tech is adopted by enough apps, it becomes second-nature to use it for unlocking password managers and journalling apps, or to confirm purchases. It&#39;s also far better than the Tab S&#39; fingerprint scanner, which requires an actual swipe as opposed to a simple tap.</p> <p>But the storage thing (and bang per buck thereof) wins it for Samsung.</p> <p><em><strong>Winner: Samsung Galaxy Tab S</strong></em></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="800" height="600" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/features.jpg?1413793495" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Performance: wind them up and watch them go </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Apple&rsquo;s been typically tight-lipped regarding the specs of its new iPad, merely noting it&rsquo;s the most powerful iPad ever. In terms of battery life, you get up to ten hours in normal usage.</p> <p>Samsung&rsquo;s not so coy, happily banging on about its Exynos 5 Octa 5420, running at 1.9GHz. It&rsquo;s hugely powerful and backed with 3 GB of RAM. Apple&rsquo;s iPad is rumoured to have 2 GB, up from the 1 GB in previous models. Battery life is a smidge under Apple&rsquo;s, at nine hours.</p> <p>But it&rsquo;s not all about numbers, and in real-world use, new iPads with the latest iOS have always felt buttery smooth, whereas Android devices with higher specs have frequently comparatively suffered, and even Samsung&rsquo;s mighty tablet is prone to stutters and lag. Because of this, the iPad Air 2 edges out ahead in this round, until we review it, at least.</p> <p><em><strong>Winner: iPad Air 2</strong></em></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="640" height="450" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/perf.jpg?1413793495" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-6"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Ecosystem: all those lovely apps and extras </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>One way in which Apple has always shined is with ecosystems. Seriously?</p> <p>Where is this coming from? The announcement of the less hype-worthy, barely upgraded iPad Mini 3 that no one really saw coming, that&#39;s where. Rumours were rife that it would not make it to the stage so soon. Or if it would, it would come bearing news of more than just the addition of Touch ID.</p> <p>Boy, were we wrong.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/sg/users/elissa-loi" title="View user profile.">Elissa Loi</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Touch ID is nice but not necessary </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Yes, Touch ID is recognisably faster than ye Touch ID of olde on the iPhone 5S. But I still believe my digits can type my four-digit password on an iPhone 6 faster than it takes the system to read my fingerprint. It&rsquo;s also a far more intuitive action to me after years of being cued, and conditioned, to type my password in.</p> <p>Needless to say, it drives the people around me nuts when I key in my password on a Touch ID-enabled phone.</p> <p>I&rsquo;m not knocking Touch ID. Rather, I believe the future is made of devices that will recognise their overlords&#39; (us) passwords we already carry - our unique biological data in our bodies. Case in point - <a href="http://www.bbc.com/news/business-29649343">Dubai&rsquo;s iris-recognition border control system</a>&nbsp;is both foolproof and secure.</p> <p>But it isn&rsquo;t all that necessary now, or all that natural yet. Especially on a device that&#39;s made for two hands to operate, not just hold. &nbsp; Some might argue exactly the opposite, that Touch ID is all the more useful on bigger devices like the iPad Mini and up.</p> <p>But to me, there&#39;s no point in unlocking a device with one hand, only to realise you need two to do the rest of the work after it&#39;s unlocked.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="Touch ID is nice but not necessary " alt="Touch ID is a nice touch but it&#039;s not an update that gives you major feels" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/touch%20id.png?1413533119" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Sigh, iPad Mini 3, sigh </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Imagine my disappointment when the iPad Mini 3&rsquo;s major update was it being newly equipped with Touch ID.&nbsp; The only other major change that Apple has made to the iPad Mini is to change the number on its end.</p> <p>And a new colour - gold.
