According to Bloomberg, Apple is working on 4.7in and 5.5in iPhone models. Whether or not these are experimental prototypes or final products remains to be seen, but at least we can generally agree that, whatever the final size, the iPhone 6 will arrive with the biggest screen yet seen on an Apple smartphone.

Not only that, but Bloomberg's source also states that the iPhone 6 will arrive with a curved glass display which wraps around the edge of the device. Watch out LG G Flex and Samsung Galaxy Round.

Update 21/01/14 Analyst Sun Changxu backs up Bloomberg's claims of smaller and larger iPhone 6 variants, differing only in the specifics – apparently the larger iPhone will sport a 5.7in screen.

Update 23/01/14 Another day, another analyst chipping in with more claims of a big-screen iPhone. In previous years, Apple had introduced a new top-tier iPhone and offered the outgoing model as a slightly cheaper; with the 5c, it effectively replaced the iPhone 5 in its line-up. Going by Apple's slides, a budget iPhone is certainly a possibility, in order to compete with the likes of the Motorola Moto G.

So while the slide isn't conclusive proof that bigger and cheaper iPhones are in the works, it certainly shows that Apple is aware of the competition – and worried about it. According to Reuters' supply chain sources, Apple is working on two new devices - a 4.7in iPhone and a larger 5.5in phablet.

The 5.5in version will apparently go into production several months after its smaller brother, due to complications arising from building the touch sensitive element directly into a larger screen.

As usual, plenty of salt should be sprinkled on all these rumours. in its own right, given that nothing short of a diamond can scratch its surface, but it’s what could theoretically be hidden beneath the screen’s layers that’s really got us excited.

Byline:

<a particularly given the number of crazy patents manufacturers file on a regular basis, but there are other clues which add meat to this particular rumour bone. Not least that Alcatel showed off a prototype with just such a technology at CES this month - and it was almost completely transparent.

Apple has already posted and filled a position for a Thin Films Engineer with solar experience, and it’s also recently advertised a position for a Manufacturing Design Engineer position which includes scribing and PVD coating – both related to thin solar cell films and laser etching.

As if that wasn’t enough, Apple signed a US$578 million deal with GT Advanced Technology last November in a deal which provides them with sapphire materials.

This deal managed to reduce the cost of GT Advanced Technology’s sapphire screens from US$13-$18 each to US$3-$5 each. A Gorilla Glass display costs US$3, so a full sapphire display has now become cost-effective for Apple to utilise in bulk.

While the iPhone 5s uses sapphire to protect its camera lens and Touch ID Home button, a recent report by Taiwanese newspaper <a
