One major revision will dazzle in screen grabs, and the next will make a load of changes that aren&rsquo;t immediately apparent, but could nonetheless be what revolutionise things for users. Last year&rsquo;s iOS 7 was geared quite heavily towards the former, but iOS 8 is very much in the latter camp.</p> <fieldset class="fieldgroup group-pricing"><legend>Pricing</legend><div class="field field-type-number-float field-field-test-price"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> S$0.00 </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-price-from"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 0 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="fieldgroup group-ratings"><legend>Ratings</legend><div class="field field-type-hcmreviewrating-rating field-field-overall-rating"> <div class="field-label">Overall rating:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="hcmrating-default">8 stars</div> </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>Review Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Visual appeal </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>From a visual standpoint, little has changed. iOS remains very much tied to Apple design head Jony Ive&rsquo;s vision of minimalism, trying to do in software what Apple tooling does for hardware.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s stark, a touch over-serious, overtly content-first, and of variable success in terms of graphic design, layout, typography and usability. Occasionally, this approach stumbles, not least with its over-emphasis on text-only buttons that are frequently indistinct or not obviously points of action; an accessibility control to add button borders is seemingly disgusted at any possible alternative, revealing one of the ugliest pieces of interface design Apple&rsquo;s ever created.</p> <p>However, just as iOS 7&rsquo;s updates toned down the worst excesses of this radical departure from iOS&rsquo;s past, so too does this update make much-needed refinements. The best example is the subtle redesign of Control Center, which ditches spindly indistinct icons on button outlines for bolder glyphs and solid backgrounds. Usability is further enhanced by dialling down the transparency behind the content and providing a preview of how your display will look as the brightness bar is adjusted.</p> <p>Similar touches are evident throughout this update. If you hated iOS 7, iOS 8 won&rsquo;t convert you; but if aspects of it merely nagged, the changes here might be enough to stop you pining for the days of linen textures and glossy buttons.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/icheapskate-25-amazing-free-games-ipad-and-iphone/feature" target="_blank">iCheapskate: 38 amazing free games for iPad and iPhone</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1280" height="1136" title="Pretty colours" alt="Apple iOS 8 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/visuals_0_0_0.png?1412738381" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Extensibility </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Really, though, the most exciting aspect of any operating system is what you can do with it. To date, iOS has been locked down, making it relatively intuitive but also inflexible. People had to leap through hoops in an absurd manner to perform relatively simple tasks, such as editing a document in multiple apps, or even sharing content to a preferred service.</p> <p>With iOS 8, you get the opportunity to swap out keyboards, add widgets (sort of), massively boost sharing and inter-app communications, work with third-party filters inside Apple&rsquo;s Photos app, and use apps that work with Touch ID for fingerprint authentication.</p> <p>The last of those is a Godsend for the likes of 1Password, but also has applications elsewhere. Amazon&rsquo;s iOS app has already integrated Touch ID support, and it&rsquo;s likely to become something of a staple on supported devices, if not specifically for passwords then for two-factor validation.</p> <p>As before, Touch ID is divorced from iCloud, with your data living in obfuscated form on your device&rsquo;s A7 or A8 chip. Developers cannot access your data, because iOS does all the to-and-fro itself. In combination with a robust password system (either Apple&rsquo;s iCloud Keychain or the aforementioned 1Password), Touch ID stands to revolutionise on-device security for iOS device owners.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/apple-iphone-6/review" target="_blank">Apple iPhone 6 review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1281" height="1136" title="Hunter2" alt="Apple iOS 8 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/tocuhid2_0_0.png?1412738381" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Keyboards in iOS 8 </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Keyboards in iOS are now hot-swappable, although it&rsquo;s first worth playing around with the revamped default, which implements a system called QuickType. This heavily resembles many Android keyboards, adding three predictive words above the keyboard that you can stab at to speed things along.</p> <p>What Apple has done very well is create a keyboard that attempts to adapt not only to what you write but where you write it, offering predictions based on existing content and style. The predictions bar can be removed if you don&rsquo;t use it or feel it takes up too much screen space, although you won&rsquo;t want to. Oddly, autocorrect appeared to be less reliable in this initial build of iOS 8, though, slightly hampering any boost in typing speed.</p> <p>Alternative keyboards are installed from the App Store like any other third-party app, and awkwardly activated in the Settings app. You switch between them using the keyboard&rsquo;s globe button. The likes of SwiftKey work as you&rsquo;d expect, finally bringing crazed swipey &lsquo;typing&rsquo; to iOS; however, swappable keyboards have enabled more ambitious products to finally make sense on iOS, such as text-expansion utility TextExpander.</p> <p>Previously reliant on apps specifically supporting it, the app now gets the opportunity to work system-wide by being a keyboard. It&rsquo;s also worth noting that Apple&rsquo;s privacy stance impacts on third-party keyboards, banning them by default from internet access and disabling them when typing in secure password fields. Given concerns surrounding online security, this is an acceptable compromise.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/swiftkey-ios-revealed-best-android-keyboard-your-iphone/news" target="_blank">SwiftKey for iOS revealed</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1280" height="1136" title="SWIPING" alt="Apple iOS 8 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/keyboard_0_0.png?1412738381" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Widgets </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Anyone hoping Apple would upend the Home screen and enable Android-style widgets will be disappointed in iOS 8 siloing equivalents within Notifications Center. Once active, it will appear by default in the Share sheet system-wide.</p> <p>The current implementation of extensions upends how certain tasks are dealt with on iOS, even if there&rsquo;s a whopper of a bug lurking.</p> <p>The bug in question involves the custom ordering of the sharing and actions lists frequently failing to stick. Presumably, this will be dealt with in an update, and it&rsquo;s easy to forgive once you start sharing from Safari to Instapaper, unlocking apps using 1Password, uploading images from Photos to social networks, and so on.</p> <p>Actions are context-sensitive, meaning options only appear when relevant, and the system at the very least means less frustrating hopping between a bunch of apps to get things done.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/25-best-iphone-and-ipad-games-you-can-play-right-now/feature" target="_blank">The 25 best iPhone and iPad games you can play right now</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="900" height="675" title="We&#039;re surprised you&#039;re reading this when you could be playing Destiny right now" alt="Apple iOS 8 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/ios1_0.jpg?1412738381" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Photos and Camera </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Photos app looks little changed, but is a very different beast from its predecessor. First, the editing tools have been significantly beefed up, in part because iPhoto for iOS has been canned. Rotation can now be arbitrary, and there&rsquo;s more control over colour and light.</p> <p>The app retains a small, reasonably impressive selection of filters, but these are now significantly boosted by third-party integrated photo extensions. When editing, compatible apps are listed via a nondescript circular button with an ellipses, and they essentially inject their capabilities directly into Photos. This means you can apply filters from the likes of Halftone 2 or VSCO Cam inside Photos, and the edits remain non-destructive.</p> <p>The other main change to Photos concerns image storage, and Apple&rsquo;s at a transitionary point regarding Photo Stream. The company&rsquo;s long-term plan is to save your entire image library in iCloud Photo Library, currently in beta. Edits will be synchronised across devices, and your library will be searchable, but the system requires you to splash out on the requisite amount of iCloud storage. At present, the old-style Photo Stream remains, although frustratingly there&rsquo;s no longer a specific album housing its images &mdash; instead, you must fish around in &lsquo;Recently Added&rsquo;.</p> <p>For taking your photos, Camera gets some minor but welcome updates: manual exposure controls, a delay timer, panoramas on iPad, and a fun time-lapse mode that stitches images together into videos. It&rsquo;s unlikely these changes will wrench anyone from high-end third-party apps, but they&rsquo;re enough to ditch the more simple Camera alternatives.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/android/android-45/review" target="_blank">Android L preview</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="2048" height="1536" title="Filters galore" alt="Apple iOS 8 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/photos_0_1.png?1412738381" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-6"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Apps: Mail, Messages and more </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>There are four new permanent apps as of iOS 8: Podcasts, iBooks, Tips and Health. The first two are no different from their older App Store versions. Tips could have been useful (Apple hates manuals), but merely provides you with, on launch, nine tips (well, we did say Apple hates manuals).</p> <p>Health is a much bigger deal, serving as the hub for data provided by your iPhone, and any compatible apps and accessories. The idea is to give you a sense of how you&rsquo;re progressing with exercise and activity, but also to make it frictionless to shift between apps, rather than feeling forced to stick with one because it has your data in its silo. On launch, however, this part of iOS was broken and temporarily off-limits to third-party developers; also, iPad owners aren&rsquo;t invited to the party, even purely for accessing their data.</p> <p>Many existing apps have had minor updates. Mail has new gestures and can stash multiple drafts at the foot of the screen, or allow you to peek behind a message you&rsquo;re writing. The drafts system is a mite fiddly, but nonetheless an improvement on iOS 7; the gestural controls are entirely hidden, but great once ingrained into your muscle memory.</p> <p>Messages adds controls for muting or leaving conversations, recording audio, and rapidly adding images from your photos or camera. The new features are nice enough, but can&rsquo;t get around Messages being an Apple-only solution and also one that has a tendency to not sync correctly across devices.</p> <p>Elsewhere, Safari gets accordion-like tabs on iPad and DuckDuckGo as a search engine option; there&rsquo;s also an attempt to shift into smart-searching, using abbreviations, but it fared poorly during testing. App Store on iPhone has vertical scrolling search results on iPhone and purchased app hiding on iPad. Notes gets rich-text formatting, finally transforming it into a half-decent text editor. And Siri gets voice-activation when your device is plugged in.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="1048" title="Mail and messaging" alt="Apple iOS 8 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/messages_0_0.jpg?1412738381" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-7"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Spotlight </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Apple&rsquo;s system-wide search remains a bit too sluggish to be truly usable, frequently offering new search results just as you go to tap something. However, rather than pare it down in Settings to just showing apps, it&rsquo;s also worth leaving Spotlight Suggestions and Bing Web Results active as well. The two combine to turn Spotlight into a much more useful tool that provides in-context web searches.</p> <p>For example, type in the name of a band and you&rsquo;ll get a link to the artist on iTunes, an album and the Wikipedia entry. Type in an app, service or game name and you&rsquo;ll likely get the App Store link. You can also do searches for terms that will then list relevant websites or places. Although many of the results of course channel you straight to Apple&rsquo;s own store, it&rsquo;s pretty convent to type &lsquo;indian food&rsquo; into Spotlight and immediately get the name and phone number of a trio of local restaurants.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1281" height="1136" title="In the spotlight" alt="Apple iOS 8 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/spotlight_0_0.png?1412738381" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-8"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Bubbling under </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>A few of iOS 8&rsquo;s biggest features aren&rsquo;t quite ready for prime-time, but warrant mentioning. HomeKit aims to do for automated home gadgets what HealthKit does for health, giving you a hub for configuring and controlling the &lsquo;internet of things&rsquo; within your home, shortly before they turn sentient and take over. Homes comprise rooms (that can be grouped into Zones) that contain Accessories that perform Services, which can have Characteristics. The thinking is you could waggle your device and have you entire house sort itself for night, locking doors, dimming lights and adjusting air temperature. The reality is this is a solution awaiting compatible hardware to become ubiquitous. One for the future, perhaps.</p> <p>Continuity and iCloud Drive are more imminent. The former is designed to enable workflows to seamlessly transition between Apple devices, enabling you, to for example, start replying to an email on your iPhone and then fling it across to your iPad, or answer an iPhone call on your Mac. The Mac side of things is awaiting OS X support (which will arrive with OS X Yosemite this autumn), but already works on iOS. During testing, we managed to send half-written emails successfully between an iPad and iPhone, doing the transfer via the lock screen. It&rsquo;s also possible to use the app switcher, although that didn&rsquo;t fare well during testing, the relevant button frequently vanishing.</p> <p>Family Sharing is another feature that will need time to bed in before we can properly assess it. It&rsquo;s designed to allow a family of up to six to share content bought on a single card, with children under 13 having to ask permission when making purchases. Apps are automatically shared and publishers of other media can opt-in. Additional benefits include a shared photo album, a shared calendar, and unified Find my Friends and Find my iPhone. Set-up is reasonably simple (even if adults may find it awkward for all purchases to be on one card), although there&rsquo;s a curious restriction on only being able to start or join Family Sharing twice in any one year, so watch out for that.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/mac-os-x-yosemite/review" target="_blank">Apple OS X Yosemite hands-on review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1281" height="1136" title="Sharing is caring" alt="Apple iOS 8 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/bubbling_0_0.png?1412738381" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-9"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Verdict </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The word that most sums up iOS 8 is &lsquo;potential&rsquo;. It lays the foundation for iPhones and iPads to become significantly more powerful devices: hubs of health and home automation; powerful pocketable computers for all kinds of advanced tasks and workflows; and a means to access, edit and share a life of captured images. Right now, some of these things are already barrelling along, with apps taking advantage of extensibility features; others, like HealthKit and HomeKit, are just at the start of their lives.</p> <p>The OS, too, feels like a mixed bag. It&rsquo;s a lot more stable than iOS 7 was on release, and feels pretty robust during use, but it&rsquo;s also very buggy. Spotlight simply stopped working during testing on a number of occasions, and layout bugs frequently cropped up on the iPad. Performance-wise, the OS seemed fine on our iPhone 5s and iPad Air, although Ars Technica has suggested&nbsp;<a href="http://arstechnica.com/apple/2014/09/ios-8-on-the-iphone-4s-performance-isnt-the-only-problem/">iPhone 4s owners should proceed with caution</a>. That device lacks the power and screen size to comfortably deal with the new OS and also doesn&rsquo;t get Continuity or AirDrop.</p> <p>Despite the bugs, the advantages iOS 8 brings make it worth upgrading to unless you only use your iPhone or iPad for the most basic of tasks. The new capabilities unlocked through extensions alone could transform the way you use your device for the better, and the many small changes combine to make an impressive update to what was already a solid mobile operating system.</p> <p>Stay tuned for an updated review once all of iOS 8&#39;s features are live.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/apple-iwatch/review" target="_blank">Apple Watch hands-on review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="604" height="453" title="Apple iOS 8 review" alt="Apple iOS 8 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-ios-8-review-03_1_2.jpg?1412738381" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-review-rating"><legend>Review Rating</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 0 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-preview"> <div class="field-label">Preview:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Disabled </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-carousel-item"><legend>Carousel Extras</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-text field-field-carousel-item-title"> <div class="field-label">Carousel item title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Apple iOS 8 </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-carousel-item-standfirst"> <div class="field-label">Carousel item standfirst:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Get ready for Apple&#039;s biggest update ever </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-carousel-image-small"> <div class="field-label">Carousel item small image:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_carousel_image_small" width="450" height="340" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-ios-8-review-03_1_0.jpg?1412738381" /> </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/ios-8/review" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/ios-8/review#comments Apple iOS 8 iPad Air iPad Mini 2 iPhone & iPad iPhone 5C iPhone 5S Smartphones Tablets Fri, 19 Sep 2014 11:29:52 +0000 Tein Hee Seow 1433742 at http://www.stuff.tv Ultimate setup: Apple iPhone 5c http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/ultimate-setup-apple-iphone-5c/feature <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Kit out your iPhone 5c with our pick of the best cases, headphones and accessories </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1296" height="730" title="Apple iPhone 5c" alt="Apple iPhone 5c cases accessories headphones ultimate setup main" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/Apple-iPhone-5c%20accessories-apple-iphone-5C-001.jpg?1395197606" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>Ah, so we see you&#39;ve bought yourself a new iPhone 5c? One of the first things you&rsquo;ll notice is the design tweak when opening and closing apps. Now when you select an app, its &quot;splash screen&quot; emanates from the app icon to fill the screen as the icons around it are pushed aside. It&#39;s such a subtle change that you&#39;ll wonder, &quot;Wasn&#39;t it always that way?&quot;.</p> <p>Similarly, when you close an app with the Home button, the app&#39;s icon zooms back into its place in the grid, and when you unlock your iPhone, the homescreen icons fly into place with a little more panache. It&#39;s not like anyone ever criticised Apple&#39;s transitions, but with ever slicker Android skins and launchers hitting the market, Apple&rsquo;s upped its game to stay a step ahead.</p> <p>And iOS 7 deserves some quality getting-to-know-you time as the attention to detail is beyond anything we&rsquo;ve ever seen on a mobile OS. The animation for downloading apps is a timer wheel revealing more of the icon underneath, almost making you wish iMovie would take longer than 30 seconds to appear. It&rsquo;ll have designers drowning in drool at the very least. And the first time you hit the Home button from the Camera app, as it blurs the screen and zooms back into place on the homescreen, you&#39;ll immediately open it back up and do it again. At least nine more times.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="iOS7 home screen and compass" alt="iOS7 home screen and compass" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/timer-compass-iOS-7.png?1394793372" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="ios7 unlock flying icons" alt="ios7 unlock flying icons" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/FlyingIcons.jpg?1394793372" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="iOS7 download progress circles" alt="iOS7 download progress circles" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Downloading.jpg?1394793372" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Control Center: Déjà vu </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Apple knows a thing or two about protecting its own designs, but with iOS 7 it hasn&#39;t been shy about pinching ideas from rival operating systems. With Android you&#39;ll swipe down to get much the same thing.</p> <p>Along the top of Control Center are toggle switches for Airplane mode, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Do Not Disturb and Orientation lock, with a brightness slider beneath that. Being able to change the brightness without going into the settings is a useful timesaver, albeit a timesaver that&#39;s taken its sweet time making it to iOS. &nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>Aside from its utility, what we like best about this mini menu is the way it appears as an opaque pane of frosted glass on top of whatever is displayed beneath, whether that&#39;s the homescreen or an app that&#39;s already running. Typical Apple panache.&nbsp;</p> <p>But there&#39;s more to it than a few toggles: there&#39;s a miniature music player interface, controls for the new AirDrop wireless sharing feature, a one-button torch function (that removes the need for a dedicated torch app) plus shortcuts to the clock, calculator and camera apps. If you&#39;re one of those people who always keeps the Settings icon pinned to the bottom of the homescreen, today is the day to remove it.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/airdrop-control-center-iOS-7.png?1394793372" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Notifications and Search: Blurring the lines </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Notification pull-down that appears from the top of the screen has been given a similar makeover, at least stylistically. It&#39;s much the same in terms of what it displays, which you can specify in Settings, but the grey hessian is out in favour of coloured icons, bigger text and a blurry hint of the homescreen colours underneath. If you were hoping the Today pane was going to be a Google Now-rivalling selection of automatically gathered information that appears before you know you need it, you&#39;re going to be disappointed, but it does get a little more useful and intelligent the more you use it, and we suspect this is just the start for the feature.</p> <p>Another slight change is how the global search is accessed. Where once scrolling left from the leftmost homescreen page was your one-stop shop for searching your phone for apps, contacts and messages, now it&#39;s done with a downward swipe from any homescreen page, with the search bar then perched above your apps. You can read what I think about of it in our <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/iphone-5s/review" target="_blank">review</a>, but I thought here was a good place to vent about my troublesome relationship with Siri. You can play the part of the counsellor.</p> <p>Like everyone else, Siri was fun when he first came on the scene. His fairly amusing answers to silly questions, his excuses for not being able to answer something, and the way he deflected criticism was all very charming. But before long the shtick started to become repetitive and his limitations became apparent. We went on a break.</p> <p>With the arrival of iOS 7 I decided to give Siri another go, and at first I found him to be very useful for my testing - he&#39;d take voice memos and notes without fail, change (most) settings quickly and easily, and I liked his new, wavey look. I even pretended to give a monkeys about what Stuff&#39;s Dep Ed Tom Wiggins had been saying on Twitter, and Siri promptly showed me his latest tweets (the usual rambling about gig rules, of course).</p> <p>But as with so many break-ups, it was his navigating that was the final straw. I told him to navigate to Heathrow Terminal 1 and he tried to direct me to the very centre of London. Later I told him to set a route to a street near my flat and he tried to take me to a Chinese takeaway. I suggested a different street near my house and he tried to take me to the very same Chinese takeaway. I wasn&#39;t even hungry, so this clearly wasn&#39;t a some new mind-reading tech. Besides, I&#39;m pretty sure that would have been mentioned in the iOS 7 press release.</p> <p>And when I finally got Siri to understand where I wanted to go he used the still flawed Apple Maps to plot a route straight into a 30min traffic jam. We fell out in spectacular fashion. I&#39;m not proud to admit I said some very hurtful things that stunned him into silence. And that was how the relationship ended for the second time. Siri&#39;s definitely going to have to buck his ideas up if I&#39;m ever going to take him back again.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-box-out-byline"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/sg/users/tom-parsons" title="View user profile.">Tom Parsons</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Buttons: Clean. For example, because the standard buttons and controls no longer have backgrounds and outlines, it&#39;s not always clear if a white space or a bit of text is something to be tapped or not. At points, it feels as if usability has been ever so slightly compromised in the pursuit of design purity.&nbsp;</p> <p>That minimalist approach goes a bit too far in places, too. In the Videos app, you&#39;ll no longer see the names of your video files beneath their thumbnails. It&#39;s a bit of an oversight, so we&#39;re hopeful that it&#39;s just a glitch that&#39;ll be fixed in future.&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="iOS7 iPhone interface" alt="iOS7 live wallpapers" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Wallpaper-iPhone.jpg?1394793372" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Carry on Tweaking </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Some of the design changes appear to have been made purely for the sake of change. This looks a bit smarter and less cluttered but it slows the process of finding and launching an app down a touch. &nbsp;</p> <p>It&#39;s a bit frustrating to see this sort of change being made when there&#39;s more important work to be done, such as giving the user a simple and intelligent method of tidying up app icons automatically. As time goes by, apps are downloaded and apps are removed, which can leave you with a dozen partially populated homescreens. It&#39;s a problem that&#39;s been with us since day one, so it&#39;s strange that nothing&rsquo;s been done about it.&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="iOS7 app folders" alt="9 apps per folder" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/AppFolders-iPhone.jpg?1394793372" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Why iOS 7 has made me want an iPhone in my life again </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Six months ago I gave up on my aged iPhone once and for all, consigning it to a long stint in the Gadget Trunk. It wasn&#39;t that I&#39;d fallen out of love, it was that it had a smashed front and back, with a jammed-in power button and a home button that needed four presses for anything to happen. Jumping ship to Android in the interim, I&rsquo;ve been revelling in bigger, higher res screens, calendar and notes widgets, HTC Zoe, S Health and simpler media moving &ndash; so long iPhoto.&nbsp;</p> <p>But minutes into my time with iOS 7, I was frowning at the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/android/htc-one/review">HTC One</a> wondering what I ever saw in Sense 5, and shaking my head at the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/android/lg-g2/review">LG G2&rsquo;s alternative multi-tasking tricks</a>. It&rsquo;s not perfect, but iOS 7 has so many more UI delights to offer than its rivals &ndash; maybe it makes me a bit sad, but using this mobile OS has made me Smile Out Loud at least a dozen times.&nbsp;</p> <p>The camera app brings to mind retro rangefinders, without veering into skeumorphism, Control Center&rsquo;s sci-fi styling is spot-on and I just calibrated the Compass by rolling a little red ball around a circle for the second time even though I&rsquo;m chained to my desk for the afternoon. I&rsquo;m not sure I can abandon Android &ndash; I mean, burying &lsquo;Limit Ad Tracking&rsquo; in Settings is a sneaky move by Apple, and my oaf hands struggle a little with the smaller keyboard. But iOS 7 and the slow-mo camera skills of the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/iphone-5s/review">iPhone 5S</a> could prove too tempting.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-box-out-byline"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/sg/users/sophie-charara" title="View user profile.">Sophie Charara</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Multi-tasking: House Of Cards </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Another element borrowed from a rival OS is the new multi-tasking system, which owes a lot to the ill-fated BlackBerry PlayBook. Also seen in previous versions of HTC Sense, a double press of the Home button now displays a horizontally scrolling carousel of cards, each of which represents an app that&#39;s currently running in the background, or one that has been recently. You can tap a card to re-enter that app or swipe it up to quit it. &nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>Behind the scenes, iOS 7 has the ability to work more intelligently with apps in the background. For example, if an app has been updated to use the new scheduling feature, when it&#39;s in the background it should only download extra content when other apps are taking a break and don&rsquo;t need the resources. The main benefit of this should be increased battery life when multi-tasking.&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="iOS7 multitasking, iPhone" alt="iOS7 multitasking, iPhone" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Multitasking-iPhone.jpg?1394793372" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-6"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> The browser: full screen and fancy </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>One big change is the built-in Safari web browser, which now has a frameless display on the iPhone, with controls for forward, back, sharing, bookmarks and new tabs popping up along the bottom of the screen when you scroll to the top or bottom of a page. That is, until you figure out that you can go back and forth by swiping horizontally from the edge of the screen &ndash; just like in Chrome. &nbsp;</p> <p>You can also have a rummage through your recent history by bringing up the Tabs browser, which presents your previous web footprints in the form of a Rolodex-style carousel. It&#39;s handy, but it&rsquo;s also a bit half-baked. This Wi-Fi-based device-to-device file transfer system only works between certain iPhones, iPads and iPod Touches at the moment, not between iThings and Macs which is disappointing as it could have streamlined the process of offloading pics and video shot on your phone, or loading up your device with music and video from a Mac without connecting via iTunes.&nbsp;</p> <p>AirDrop compatibility is limited to a small number of recent iThings (the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/apple-iphone-5/review">iPhone 5</a>, <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/iphone-5c/review">5C</a> and <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/iphone-5s/review">5S</a>, plus the iPad 4, iPad Mini and 5th-gen iPod Touch), which for now will grate with anyone who also has an iPad 3, iPhone 4S or older devices still in use around the home. That&#39;s because it relies on modern Wi-Fi radios, so it&#39;s never going to be backwards-compatible.</p> <p>But despite our grumbles, in use AirDrop is quick and simple. It&#39;s accessed as an additional option from the updated Share menu, which can be summoned whenever you find yourself dealing with compatible content, such as website URLs, map directions, pictures or video. You can set your phone or tablet to be discoverable by anyone nearby, only those in your contacts book or turn it off completely. Once someone has accepted your invitation to share, transfer is speedy and painless and the files can then be opened in the relevant app or saved to Photos. Depending on which device you&#39;re running iOS 7 on, you can add retro colour filters during and/or after shooting stills, and there are also options for correcting red eye, cropping and auto colour correction. Square format and panoramic stills are thrown in (again, on selected devices), and for the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/iphone-5s/review">iPhone 5S</a> there&#39;s a fantastically fun and easy-to-use 120fps slow-mo video mode. &nbsp;</p> <p>Once you&#39;ve taken your pics you can enjoy the new Photos browser, which arranges your shots into groups called &quot;Moments&quot;, &quot;Collections&quot; and &quot;Years&quot;, rather than the single chronologically ordered stream of the old style Camera Roll with the option to create your own albums as before. The Share option has been tidied up, with distinct rows for AirDrop, social media sharing and messaging, and another for AirPlay, AirPrint and other options. You also get the chance to add more pictures or video directly from the Share page without having to go back to the main Camera Roll &ndash; a nice touch. It may be sexier but this is essentially the simple, downright efficient mobile OS we&rsquo;ve all been used to and the reason iDevices started selling in their wagonloads in the first place.&nbsp;</p> <p>That does mean no widgets or Live Tiles &ndash; the notifications pull-down is the closest you&rsquo;ve got &ndash; and very little customisation. Sure, you can change the wallpaper on the home and lockscreen to tone down the initial shock of iOS 7&rsquo;s colour scheme but plenty of stalwarts stay pretty much the same &ndash; like the excellent and eerily accurate keyboard.&nbsp;</p> <p>By refusing to add a top layer of social media feeds, news tickers and weather forecasts, Apple has kept the focus on apps, which it clearly recognises as one of the major selling points of iThings over Android rivals. A more sparky, widget-based front end would most likely have pushed these gems into the wings, and that&#39;s something we&#39;d hate to see happen. However, if 90% of your phone and tablet use is based around Facebook, Twitter, music, video and the web, it&#39;s unlikely that this latest edition of iOS is going to light your fire.</p> <p>As a family oriented OS it&#39;s still unbeatable, and remains a far safer, less vulnerable environment than the more liberal but less disciplined wolrd of Android.</p> <p>It&#39;s no longer a question of which is the best OS, it&#39;s a matter of which is the best for you. If awesome apps, a slick interface and a sense of security are top of your list, iOS7 is a clear winner. If you prefer to do things your way, the customisability of Android Jelly Bean can&#39;t be beaten, thanks to its wide range of widgets, launchers and lockscreens. iOS 7 gives you just one option but it&rsquo;s an OS that&rsquo;s as beautifully crafted and worthy of gadget pride as iPhone and iPad hardware itself.</p> <p>Words: <a href="https://plus.google.com/106422809643177538618/posts">Tony Horgan</a> and <a href="https://plus.google.com/100316166955509219073">Sophie Charara</a>.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-11"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> iOS 7.1 [update 12/03/14] </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>We liked iOS 7. The car&#39;s touchscreen or hardware controls - such as knobs, dials and buttons in the central column or steering wheel - can be used to control certain compatible apps running on the iPhone. For instance, Siri can be summoned and ordered, music can be selected and played, and if you see fit to replace your existing in-car sat-nav with Apple&#39;s own Maps app, that can be done too.</p> <p>Right now that&#39;s not something that will impact greatly on the lives of the masses, but it&#39;s an important investment in the future. Many of the world&#39;s major car brands are set to include CarPlay functionality further down the line, although it&#39;s interesting to note that, at this point, the list which includes Ford, BMW and Toyota makes no mention of the VW Group (which encompases Audi, Seat and Skoda).v</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="Apple iOS 7 review CarPlay" alt="Apple iOS 7 review CarPlay" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-ios-7.1-review-carplay-001_0.jpg?1394793285" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-13"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> iOS 7.1 - Siri </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>We&#39;ve never been that keen on Siri. The iPhone 4 still shows a small amount of lag, but there&#39;s a big improvement, particularly, when opening folders containing groups of apps.</p> <p>There&#39;s not a whole lot else that&#39;s changed from iOS 7. The &quot;Slide to unlock&quot; text now has a shinier highlight and there seems to be a little more fluidity to the parallax wallpaper animation as you tilt your device. If you have an iPhone 5 you can set the camera to automatically switch to High Dynamic Range mode when it thinks the situation demands it (for more even exposures of high contrast or low-light scenes), the Calendar app has had a little make over and the fingerprint recognition has been improved.</p> <p>So overall, while iOS 7.1 isn&#39;t a huge update, it does fix a few things, particularly for users of older iDevices. Unlike the creaky plastic that clads the Samsung Galaxy range, the 5C’s hard-coated polycarbonate feels robust – a premium material in other words. It’s colourful too, available in five bright finishes that set it aside from the more sober, more grown-up iPhone 5 and 5S. The screen is, of course, glass.</p> <p>The iPhone 5 and 5S are near-identical in build quality and design. Made of glass and aluminium, they’re lightweight, thin and elegant. It’s a quality of finish almost unmatched in the smartphone world (the HTC One beats it, just). The iPhone 5 comes in two finishes (black and slate or white and silver) while the iPhone 5S comes in three: Space Grey, silver and, yes, gold. The gold option is controversial, but Apple has done a fine job of keeping it subtle and toning down the gaudiness. There’s also an improved home button on the 5S, which conceals a fingerprint scanner.</p> <p>Which iPhone is the best is really down to personal preference. The 5C screams youth and craziness while the 5S is a little more buttoned-down and elegant.
