One of the first things you&rsquo;ll notice is the design tweak when opening and closing apps. Now when you select an app, its &quot;splash screen&quot; emanates from the app icon to fill the screen as the icons around it are pushed aside. It&#39;s such a subtle change that you&#39;ll wonder, &quot;Wasn&#39;t it always that way?&quot;.</p> <p>Similarly, when you close an app with the Home button, the app&#39;s icon zooms back into its place in the grid, and when you unlock your iPhone, the homescreen icons fly into place with a little more panache. It&#39;s not like anyone ever criticised Apple&#39;s transitions, but with ever slicker Android skins and launchers hitting the market, Apple&rsquo;s upped its game to stay a step ahead.</p> <p>And iOS 7 deserves some quality getting-to-know-you time as the attention to detail is beyond anything we&rsquo;ve ever seen on a mobile OS. The animation for downloading apps is a timer wheel revealing more of the icon underneath, almost making you wish iMovie would take longer than 30 seconds to appear. It&rsquo;ll have designers drowning in drool at the very least. And the first time you hit the Home button from the Camera app, as it blurs the screen and zooms back into place on the homescreen, you&#39;ll immediately open it back up and do it again. At least nine more times.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="iOS7 home screen and compass" alt="iOS7 home screen and compass" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/timer-compass-iOS-7.png?1394793372" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="ios7 unlock flying icons" alt="ios7 unlock flying icons" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/FlyingIcons.jpg?1394793372" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="iOS7 download progress circles" alt="iOS7 download progress circles" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Downloading.jpg?1394793372" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Control Center: Déjà vu </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Apple knows a thing or two about protecting its own designs, but with iOS 7 it hasn&#39;t been shy about pinching ideas from rival operating systems. With Android you&#39;ll swipe down to get much the same thing.</p> <p>Along the top of Control Center are toggle switches for Airplane mode, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Do Not Disturb and Orientation lock, with a brightness slider beneath that. Being able to change the brightness without going into the settings is a useful timesaver, albeit a timesaver that&#39;s taken its sweet time making it to iOS. &nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>Aside from its utility, what we like best about this mini menu is the way it appears as an opaque pane of frosted glass on top of whatever is displayed beneath, whether that&#39;s the homescreen or an app that&#39;s already running. Typical Apple panache.&nbsp;</p> <p>But there&#39;s more to it than a few toggles: there&#39;s a miniature music player interface, controls for the new AirDrop wireless sharing feature, a one-button torch function (that removes the need for a dedicated torch app) plus shortcuts to the clock, calculator and camera apps. If you were hoping the Today pane was going to be a Google Now-rivalling selection of automatically gathered information that appears before you know you need it, you&#39;re going to be disappointed, but it does get a little more useful and intelligent the more you use it, and we suspect this is just the start for the feature.</p> <p>Another slight change is how the global search is accessed. Where once scrolling left from the leftmost homescreen page was your one-stop shop for searching your phone for apps, contacts and messages, now it&#39;s done with a downward swipe from any homescreen page, with the search bar then perched above your apps. You can read what I think about of it in our <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/iphone-5s/review" target="_blank">review</a>, but I thought here was a good place to vent about my troublesome relationship with Siri. You can play the part of the counsellor.</p> <p>Like everyone else, Siri was fun when he first came on the scene. His fairly amusing answers to silly questions, his excuses for not being able to answer something, and the way he deflected criticism was all very charming. But before long the shtick started to become repetitive and his limitations became apparent. We went on a break.</p> <p>With the arrival of iOS 7 I decided to give Siri another go, and at first I found him to be very useful for my testing - he&#39;d take voice memos and notes without fail, change (most) settings quickly and easily, and I liked his new, wavey look. I even pretended to give a monkeys about what Stuff&#39;s Dep Ed Tom Wiggins had been saying on Twitter, and Siri promptly showed me his latest tweets (the usual rambling about gig rules, of course).</p> <p>But as with so many break-ups, it was his navigating that was the final straw. I told him to navigate to Heathrow Terminal 1 and he tried to direct me to the very centre of London. Later I told him to set a route to a street near my flat and he tried to take me to a Chinese takeaway. I suggested a different street near my house and he tried to take me to the very same Chinese takeaway. I wasn&#39;t even hungry, so this clearly wasn&#39;t a some new mind-reading tech. Besides, I&#39;m pretty sure that would have been mentioned in the iOS 7 press release.</p> <p>And when I finally got Siri to understand where I wanted to go he used the still flawed Apple Maps to plot a route straight into a 30min traffic jam. We fell out in spectacular fashion. I&#39;m not proud to admit I said some very hurtful things that stunned him into silence. And that was how the relationship ended for the second time. Siri&#39;s definitely going to have to buck his ideas up if I&#39;m ever going to take him back again.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-box-out-byline"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/sg/users/tom-parsons" title="View user profile.">Tom Parsons</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Buttons: Clean. For example, because the standard buttons and controls no longer have backgrounds and outlines, it&#39;s not always clear if a white space or a bit of text is something to be tapped or not. At points, it feels as if usability has been ever so slightly compromised in the pursuit of design purity.&nbsp;</p> <p>That minimalist approach goes a bit too far in places, too. In the Videos app, you&#39;ll no longer see the names of your video files beneath their thumbnails. It&#39;s a bit of an oversight, so we&#39;re hopeful that it&#39;s just a glitch that&#39;ll be fixed in future.&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="iOS7 iPhone interface" alt="iOS7 live wallpapers" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Wallpaper-iPhone.jpg?1394793372" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Carry on Tweaking </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Some of the design changes appear to have been made purely for the sake of change. If you tap on a folder of app icons, now you&#39;re shown a maximum of nine apps at once and if you have more in that folder you&rsquo;ll need to scroll across to the next group of nine. Or the next. This looks a bit smarter and less cluttered but it slows the process of finding and launching an app down a touch. &nbsp;</p> <p>It&#39;s a bit frustrating to see this sort of change being made when there&#39;s more important work to be done, such as giving the user a simple and intelligent method of tidying up app icons automatically. As time goes by, apps are downloaded and apps are removed, which can leave you with a dozen partially populated homescreens. It&#39;s a problem that&#39;s been with us since day one, so it&#39;s strange that nothing&rsquo;s been done about it.&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="iOS7 app folders" alt="9 apps per folder" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/AppFolders-iPhone.jpg?1394793372" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Why iOS 7 has made me want an iPhone in my life again </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Six months ago I gave up on my aged iPhone once and for all, consigning it to a long stint in the Gadget Trunk. It wasn&#39;t that I&#39;d fallen out of love, it was that it had a smashed front and back, with a jammed-in power button and a home button that needed four presses for anything to happen. Jumping ship to Android in the interim, I&rsquo;ve been revelling in bigger, higher res screens, calendar and notes widgets, HTC Zoe, S Health and simpler media moving &ndash; so long iPhoto.&nbsp;</p> <p>But minutes into my time with iOS 7, I was frowning at the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/android/htc-one/review">HTC One</a> wondering what I ever saw in Sense 5, and shaking my head at the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/android/lg-g2/review">LG G2&rsquo;s alternative multi-tasking tricks</a>. It&rsquo;s not perfect, but iOS 7 has so many more UI delights to offer than its rivals &ndash; maybe it makes me a bit sad, but using this mobile OS has made me Smile Out Loud at least a dozen times.&nbsp;</p> <p>The camera app brings to mind retro rangefinders, without veering into skeumorphism, Control Center&rsquo;s sci-fi styling is spot-on and I just calibrated the Compass by rolling a little red ball around a circle for the second time even though I&rsquo;m chained to my desk for the afternoon. I&rsquo;m not sure I can abandon Android &ndash; I mean, burying &lsquo;Limit Ad Tracking&rsquo; in Settings is a sneaky move by Apple, and my oaf hands struggle a little with the smaller keyboard. But iOS 7 and the slow-mo camera skills of the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/iphone-5s/review">iPhone 5S</a> could prove too tempting.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-box-out-byline"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/sg/users/sophie-charara" title="View user profile.">Sophie Charara</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Multi-tasking: House Of Cards </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Another element borrowed from a rival OS is the new multi-tasking system, which owes a lot to the ill-fated BlackBerry PlayBook. Also seen in previous versions of HTC Sense, a double press of the Home button now displays a horizontally scrolling carousel of cards, each of which represents an app that&#39;s currently running in the background, or one that has been recently. You can tap a card to re-enter that app or swipe it up to quit it. &nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>Behind the scenes, iOS 7 has the ability to work more intelligently with apps in the background. For example, if an app has been updated to use the new scheduling feature, when it&#39;s in the background it should only download extra content when other apps are taking a break and don&rsquo;t need the resources. The main benefit of this should be increased battery life when multi-tasking.&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="iOS7 multitasking, iPhone" alt="iOS7 multitasking, iPhone" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Multitasking-iPhone.jpg?1394793372" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-6"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> The browser: full screen and fancy </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>One big change is the built-in Safari web browser, which now has a frameless display on the iPhone, with controls for forward, back, sharing, bookmarks and new tabs popping up along the bottom of the screen when you scroll to the top or bottom of a page. That&#39;s because it relies on modern Wi-Fi radios, so it&#39;s never going to be backwards-compatible.</p> <p>But despite our grumbles, in use AirDrop is quick and simple. It&#39;s accessed as an additional option from the updated Share menu, which can be summoned whenever you find yourself dealing with compatible content, such as website URLs, map directions, pictures or video. You can set your phone or tablet to be discoverable by anyone nearby, only those in your contacts book or turn it off completely. Once someone has accepted your invitation to share, transfer is speedy and painless and the files can then be opened in the relevant app or saved to Photos. It&#39;s a neat way to swap pictures and links between phones but it does feel like a bit of a letdown without integration with AirDrop on a Mac.&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="iOS7 AirDrop on iPhone" alt="iOS 7 AirDrop picture sharing" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/AirDrop-iPhone.jpg?1394793372" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-8"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Camera and Photos: so much more than Instagram Lite </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The camera app is good. Depending on which device you&#39;re running iOS 7 on, you can add retro colour filters during and/or after shooting stills, and there are also options for correcting red eye, cropping and auto colour correction. Square format and panoramic stills are thrown in (again, on selected devices), and for the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/iphone-5s/review">iPhone 5S</a> there&#39;s a fantastically fun and easy-to-use 120fps slow-mo video mode. &nbsp;</p> <p>Once you&#39;ve taken your pics you can enjoy the new Photos browser, which arranges your shots into groups called &quot;Moments&quot;, &quot;Collections&quot; and &quot;Years&quot;, rather than the single chronologically ordered stream of the old style Camera Roll with the option to create your own albums as before. The Share option has been tidied up, with distinct rows for AirDrop, social media sharing and messaging, and another for AirPlay, AirPrint and other options. You also get the chance to add more pictures or video directly from the Share page without having to go back to the main Camera Roll &ndash; a nice touch. It may be sexier but this is essentially the simple, downright efficient mobile OS we&rsquo;ve all been used to and the reason iDevices started selling in their wagonloads in the first place.&nbsp;</p> <p>That does mean no widgets or Live Tiles &ndash; the notifications pull-down is the closest you&rsquo;ve got &ndash; and very little customisation. Sure, you can change the wallpaper on the home and lockscreen to tone down the initial shock of iOS 7&rsquo;s colour scheme but plenty of stalwarts stay pretty much the same &ndash; like the excellent and eerily accurate keyboard.&nbsp;</p> <p>By refusing to add a top layer of social media feeds, news tickers and weather forecasts, Apple has kept the focus on apps, which it clearly recognises as one of the major selling points of iThings over Android rivals. A more sparky, widget-based front end would most likely have pushed these gems into the wings, and that&#39;s something we&#39;d hate to see happen. However, if 90% of your phone and tablet use is based around Facebook, Twitter, music, video and the web, it&#39;s unlikely that this latest edition of iOS is going to light your fire.</p> <p>As a family oriented OS it&#39;s still unbeatable, and remains a far safer, less vulnerable environment than the more liberal but less disciplined wolrd of Android.</p> <p>It&#39;s no longer a question of which is the best OS, it&#39;s a matter of which is the best for you. If awesome apps, a slick interface and a sense of security are top of your list, iOS7 is a clear winner. If you prefer to do things your way, the customisability of Android Jelly Bean can&#39;t be beaten, thanks to its wide range of widgets, launchers and lockscreens. iOS 7 gives you just one option but it&rsquo;s an OS that&rsquo;s as beautifully crafted and worthy of gadget pride as iPhone and iPad hardware itself.</p> <p>Words: <a href="https://plus.google.com/106422809643177538618/posts">Tony Horgan</a> and <a href="https://plus.google.com/100316166955509219073">Sophie Charara</a>.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-11"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> iOS 7.1 [update 12/03/14] </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>We liked iOS 7. The car&#39;s touchscreen or hardware controls - such as knobs, dials and buttons in the central column or steering wheel - can be used to control certain compatible apps running on the iPhone. For instance, Siri can be summoned and ordered, music can be selected and played, and if you see fit to replace your existing in-car sat-nav with Apple&#39;s own Maps app, that can be done too.</p> <p>Right now that&#39;s not something that will impact greatly on the lives of the masses, but it&#39;s an important investment in the future. Many of the world&#39;s major car brands are set to include CarPlay functionality further down the line, although it&#39;s interesting to note that, at this point, the list which includes Ford, BMW and Toyota makes no mention of the VW Group (which encompases Audi, Seat and Skoda).v</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="Apple iOS 7 review CarPlay" alt="Apple iOS 7 review CarPlay" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-ios-7.1-review-carplay-001_0.jpg?1394793285" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-13"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> iOS 7.1 - Siri </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>We&#39;ve never been that keen on Siri. The iPhone 4 still shows a small amount of lag, but there&#39;s a big improvement, particularly, when opening folders containing groups of apps.</p> <p>There&#39;s not a whole lot else that&#39;s changed from iOS 7. The &quot;Slide to unlock&quot; text now has a shinier highlight and there seems to be a little more fluidity to the parallax wallpaper animation as you tilt your device. If you have an iPhone 5 you can set the camera to automatically switch to High Dynamic Range mode when it thinks the situation demands it (for more even exposures of high contrast or low-light scenes), the Calendar app has had a little make over and the fingerprint recognition has been improved.</p> <p>So overall, while iOS 7.1 isn&#39;t a huge update, it does fix a few things, particularly for users of older iDevices. And it is dramatic (if anyone tells you otherwise, it&rsquo;s because they&rsquo;ve been using iOS 7 since the first beta in June, so have grown used to it). You can be fiddling with the new iPhone 5c for days, and still be unearthing changes in the way the interface looks and works. The overhaul really runs that deep.</p> <p>Gone are the skeuomorphic icons and textures that have screamed iOS since 2007. Instead, you have minimalist icons, ultra-thin type, neon primary colours and subtle transparencies. Many of the gestures are all-new, too, from a swipe up to reveal the new Control Centre panel, to left and right swipes in Mail and within folders.&nbsp;</p> <p>iPhone diehards may momentarily panic, until they take a minute to realise that they&rsquo;re still at home - only someone has thrown the wood and leather into the skip, and swapped the house for a too-cool-for-school digital consultancy in the middle of Roppongi.&nbsp;</p> <p>We&rsquo;ve started a hardware review with the software, because iOS 7 is 70% of the story, and critical to how the iPhone 5c tries to seduce you. It&rsquo;s not the first attempt to theme an interface with its casing (turn on a Microsoft W8 Phone and start adjusting the Modern tile colours), but the combination of iOS 7 and the 5c takes the game into extra time, with the new operating system&rsquo;s colours tuned to fit with the 5c&rsquo;s vivid casings. Buy a canary yellow 5c, and it will launch with yellow wallpaper - this thing is that themed.</p> <p>Regardless of whether the 5c disgusts or delights you, that shouldn&rsquo;t distract from the merits of the core system. So what do we think of iOS 7? It&rsquo;s beautiful. The icons are (almost) cohesive, attractive and usable. The type is (almost) tight and right. And the transitions - if you&rsquo;re happy to squint at the odd rough edge - are (almost) delightful.&nbsp;</p> <p>It&rsquo;s a remarkable achievement for Apple&rsquo;s design team: replace the design language that defined your products for thousands of developers and millions of users every day (and was so close to the heart of the man that built your company), and to come up for air with a powerful new statement that actually works.</p> <p>You&rsquo;ll find it even more incredible if you were one of the few to run the initial iOS 7 betas this summer, as we did. The first beta was shocking: the new iconography was as ugly and inconsistent as the typography. And while any beta has every right to be buggy, the new screen and folder transitions were rougher than you&rsquo;d ever expect from Apple. That the final result has such cohesion and finesse is miraculous.</p> <p>Yes, you&rsquo;ll bump into Android and Windows 8 as you tap and swipe through iOS 7. Open its new Calendar - pure W8, right? Now try the lock screen - that&rsquo;s a<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/google-nexus-4/review" target="_blank">Nexus</a>, isn&rsquo;t it (albeit one that got locked in the cellar with a case of absinthe)? But the whole is still enough Apple to be its own thing - enough of the past to hold its heritage, with enough of the new to be slightly scary.</p> <p>The real litmus test will come if you use the iPhone 5c for a few days, then suddenly switch back to an iPhone 4S or 5. Weird, is it? iOS 6 looks familiar, but suddenly aged and cluttered - all buttons, bars, thick grey gradients and &lsquo;authentic&rsquo; textures, with the content elbowing its way through the hoarded furniture. By comparison, iOS 7 is Zen.</p> <p>That said, (and in direct contrast to&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/iphone-5s/review" target="_blank">our experience with the 5s</a>) we still found bugs and niggles. The settings screen quit twice, and the transition back to the home screen would land with a final jolt rather than a glide. Too many in the Stuff team struggled to read some of the fonts or even recognise some of the icons. And we&rsquo;d swear that there was the odd dodgy touch response (i.e. there was no response).&nbsp;</p> <p>There were no showstoppers in our time with the 5c, but it&rsquo;s clear that iOS 7 - for all its brilliance - is still a work in progress.</p> <p>If you more of our thoughts on the revamped iOS, read our&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/ios-7/ios-7/review" target="_blank">standalone review of iOS 7</a>.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/IMG_7473_0.JPG?1386124686" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="The same but so, so different" alt="The same but so, so different" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSC01985_0.JPG?1386124686" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Metal versus plastic is the battle of our time" alt="Metal versus plastic is the battle of our time" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSC01991_0.JPG?1386124686" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> THE SCREEN: LOOK FAMILIAR? </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Buy an iPhone 5c, and you now own an iPhone 5 in a plastic and steel shell (a rather crude summary, Apple, but fundamentally true). &nbsp; You&rsquo;ll be looking at the same four inch, 326ppi Retina screen, and taking pictures using the same 8MP camera.&nbsp;</p> <p>But the fact that the 5c is virtually a rehash shouldn&rsquo;t damn it. The iPhone 5 has remained a fiercely competitive device, so it&rsquo;s no surprise that the 5c gives many of its prime-time rivals a run for their money.</p> <p>The 1136 x 640 Retina display is the same one that millions have been staring at since it first appeared on the iPhone 5, and has most of the attributes of the first Retina to appear in 3.5in guise on the iPhone 4 in 2010. And it&#39;s none the worse for it: it&rsquo;s bright, viewing angles are excellent, and it&rsquo;s a pleasure to look at. The colour balance is on the warm side, but we&rsquo;re down to issues of taste, not competence.&nbsp;</p> <p>We wish that Apple would reconsider its dogged allegiance to four inch screens (surely a 4.3in alternative wouldn&rsquo;t bring Cupertino crashing to the ground?), even if we also know why they&rsquo;ve stuck with it. A vast swathe of iPhone users want to be able to use it single handed. And for that to work, the distance from the base of the handset to the top of the screen can&rsquo;t extend further than the length of the average human thumb - which just happens to be about four inches.</p> <p>Apple knows its users, and we know enough iPhone fans who would ditch the device the day that they couldn&rsquo;t bash out a text single-handed. But the new wave of Androids are now flooding the world over four inches - and we refuse to believe that not one of those proud new&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/android/htc-one/review" target="_blank">One</a>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/android/samsung-galaxy-s4/review" target="_blank">S4</a>&nbsp;owners (<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/android/htc-one-mini/review-0" target="_blank">Mini</a>&nbsp;or not) have ever owned an iPhone.&nbsp;</p> <p>That said, Apple is still working miracles with the limited screen real estate - iOS 7 crams more content into the same space by stripping away navigational furniture. And as more popular apps begin to update their designs to fit with iOS 7 guidelines, so your new 5c will steadily improve.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The 5c has the same screen as the iPhone 5" alt="The 5c has the same screen as the iPhone 5" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSC02024_0.JPG?1386124686" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> PERFORMANCE: MORE THAN FAST ENOUGH </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The iPhone 5c sticks with the 32-bit, dual-core A6 processor that powered the iPhone 5 - which you could see as a problem, especially when its new 5s big brother now packs the glamorous A7&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/whats-all-fuss-about-64-bit-smartphones-iphone-5s-and-samsung-galaxy-s5-anyway/feature" target="_blank">64-bit chip</a>&nbsp;(backed by an M7 coprocessor to look after motion data). By comparison, the iPhone 5c looks like an anaemic (and cheerily dressed) cousin.</p> <p>Indeed, in our AnTuTu benchmark test it actually scored a little lower than the iPhone 5: 12022 vs 13608.</p> <p>But if you&rsquo;re happy to abandon any specification machismo for the trash it usually proves to be, the iPhone 5c is more than powerful enough for virtually any job. The iPhone 5 remained competitive until the end of its life, so it&rsquo;s no surprise that the 5c can still look most of its competitors in the eye.</p> <p>Response to a tap on the touchscreen is all but instant, apps switch without any stutter, and there&rsquo;s no lag when opening crucial items such as the camera. Any delays in using the 5c are more a result of the new animations introduced by iOS 7 than any flaw in the hardware (a few colleagues during our week with the 5c commented that the fly-in icons as you open the home screen could do with getting a move on).</p> <p>If you&rsquo;ve already studied the 5c&rsquo;s spec sheets, you&rsquo;ll have spotted that it isn&rsquo;t a total line-for-line copy of the iPhone 5. In fact, the casing is slightly deeper (8.97mm vs the iPhone 5&rsquo;s 7.6mm), presumably to house its slightly beefed up battery (1507 mAh vs 1440 mAh).&nbsp;</p> <p>Apple claims 10 hours of 3G talk time for the 5c, a whole two hours more than the iPhone 5, and respectable 250 hours of standby. We won&rsquo;t claim to have conducted days of laboratory testing for this review, but we can say that on at least two occasions, our iPhone 5c showed 85% of battery remaining after 14-15 hours of standby and several hours of use. Which is pretty damned impressive, and means that two days of light use before a recharge doesn&rsquo;t sound fanciful.</p> <p>In fact, our only quibble with the 5c may be a result of its combination of 1GB of RAM and iOS 7&rsquo;s new multitasking. Whether it was down to our early review unit, or apps that have yet to be updated to full iOS 7 compatibility, there were definite redrawing issues when swiping through the new multitasking screens.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The iPhone 5c is cheerily dressed and then some" alt="The iPhone 5c is cheerily dressed and then some" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/IMG_7470_0.JPG?1386124686" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> iPhone 5c tech specs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Operating System - iOS 7</p> <p>Processor - Apple A6</p> <p>RAM - 1GB</p> <p>Screen - 4in Retina display with 1136x640 resolution (326ppi)</p> <p>Camera - 8MP rear, 1.2MP front</p> <p>Storage - 16/32GB (not expandable)</p> <p>Data - 4G LTE</p> <p>Battery - 1507mAh</p> <p>Dimensions/weight - 124.4 x 59.2 x 8.97mm/132g</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> IMAGING: A QUIET REVOLUTION </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The iPhone 5c&rsquo;s photo hardware may be familiar enough, with its 8MP, five-element lens camera with LED flash inherited from the iPhone 5, but the camera app has undergone an overhaul that effectively makes the 5c all-new.&nbsp;</p> <p>That&rsquo;s a big claim, but the software redesign really is that good. For example, switching between stills and video modes is now a quick flick across the screen, rather than a fiddly prod on a tiny switch in the corner, as was the case in iOS 6.&nbsp;</p> <p>And two further modes have been added as you swipe across, namely &lsquo;square&rsquo; and &lsquo;pano&rsquo;. While there&rsquo;s nothing revolutionary in any of the new features in themselves, they combine to make an iOS 7-powered iPhone a powerful creative tool - thanks largely to the fact that modes and filters can be switched so easily.</p> <p>Switch to video mode, and you&rsquo;ll find the same 30fps, 1080p recording featured in the iPhone 5, along with 720p from the 1.2 megapixel front-facing camera (although the camera had been updated, with more pixels and improved backside illumination).&nbsp;</p> <p>Just remember that if go for the 5c, you&rsquo;ll be relinquishing the slow motion video recording of the iPhone 5s - and we somehow suspect for many, that slow-mo (which is really, really good) may prove the tipping point in deciding whether to spend the extra $140.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The same optics but a much improved camera app" alt="The same optics but a much improved camera app" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSC02015_0.JPG?1386124686" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="I&#039;d actually forgotten they still made Ribena" alt="I&#039;d actually forgotten they still made Ribena" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/photo%20%287%29_0_0.JPG?1386124686" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> SOUND: NO BEATS BEATER </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>You&rsquo;d expect a firm that changed music forever to do a rather splendid job of eliciting fine audio from its hardware, and Apple does.&nbsp;</p> <p>The 5c and its accompanying in-ear phones (which are just white, by the way - no luminescence here, folks) produce a rich, fulsome sound with a decent dynamic range, and quite enough volume to drown out the world around you with distortion.</p> <p>However, the story changes somewhat once you start comparing the 5c to the handset that has arguably set the audio standard for smartphones - the HTC One.&nbsp;</p> <p>Although the margin of victory isn&rsquo;t catastrophic for the iPhone, the One is more rounded and realistic. In comparison, the iPhone 5c - especially at high volumes - is a little brash and hard-edged. You could call it an unfair comparison given that the One is pricier than the 5c, but we&rsquo;d argue that buyers expect the absolute best from Apple.</p> <p>The 5c&rsquo;s built-in speakers make it a working sound source in its own right, albeit not one that you&rsquo;d brag about to friends or use for extended periods. The margin of victory for the Beats-equipped HTC One over the iPhone 5c grows considerably: the One can be used as a your go-to mini system, while the 5c is at best occasional.</p> <p>Voice call quality through the iPhone 5c is very good, but there&rsquo;s a somewhat warm, processed, slightly compressed quality to human voices by comparison to the aforementioned HTC.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Does my yellow phone clash with my giant red hand?" alt="Does my yellow phone clash with my giant red hand?" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSC02030_0.JPG?1386124686" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> PRICE: IS THE 5c GOOD VALUE? </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>This is the bit we don&rsquo;t get. A 16GB iPhone 5c weighs in at &nbsp;$848 SIM-free. So in no way is this a &lsquo;budget&rsquo; device - in your local showroom, it&rsquo;s on the same rack as a host of hyper-powered Android rivals costing only a few pounds more (including an HTC One, for example, at $968).&nbsp;</p> <p>But maybe that&rsquo;s part of the 5c&rsquo;s pub quiz. Both HTC and Samsung saw it coming, and put smaller screened versions of their flagship phones to market (the One Mini and Galaxy S4 Mini), undercutting the 5c&rsquo;s SIM-free price. But then neither the HTC nor Samsung deals Apple a killer blow in a spec sheet smackdown (see the One Mini&rsquo;s 4MP camera, for example, or the S4 Mini&rsquo;s miserly 8GB of onboard storage).</p> <p>The conundrum doesn&rsquo;t end there. You only need spend another $140, and you&rsquo;ll be clutching an iPhone 5s, complete with its 64-bit innards, upgraded camera and show-off fingerprint tech.&nbsp;</p> <p>It&rsquo;s at this point that Apple&rsquo;s marketing for the 5c snaps into burnt orange clarity. Those pupil-busting colours and Connect 4 cases are not there by accident - you&rsquo;re not spending $848 on a slightly older phone in a plastic case with very decent specs. No, you&rsquo;re buying a statement, folks, one you&rsquo;ll make every time you pop the phone from your pocket on the tube.&nbsp;</p> <p>So everything hangs on your perception of the packaging and the new OS. In our week with the 5c, the seas parted into outright rejectors, and slavish acolytes.&nbsp;</p> <p>The 5c rejectors mocked the Early Learning Centre operating system and packaging, along with the &lsquo;borrowed&rsquo; hardware. The 5c acolytes cooed over the fresh sophistication of iOS 7&rsquo;s looks, and brazenness of the colour schemes. The rejectors wouldn&rsquo;t pay $50, let alone $848, while the quasi-religious would part with $1000 without so much as a blink.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="You&#039;re mind will likely be made up about the iPhone 5c as soon as you first lay eyes on it" alt="You&#039;re mind will likely be made up about the iPhone 5c as soon as you first lay " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/IMG_7476_0.JPG?1386124686" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="These cases must simply be some kind of mistake" alt="These cases must simply be some kind of mistake" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSC02006_0.JPG?1386124686" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-6"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Verdict </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>There can be no one verdict on the iPhone 5c - reactions to it are so extreme and subjective that any attempt at an all-encompassing objective pronouncement is impossible. Daft, even. The most we can do is set it in context, and be honest.&nbsp;</p> <p>We&rsquo;ll start by banning discussion about the price: some analysts see the 5c as a cynical repackaging that doesn&rsquo;t move the game on, but most people won&rsquo;t care (as evidenced by the rumoured 1m pre-orders). And there&rsquo;s enough that&rsquo;s great about the 5c for us not to try and persuade them otherwise. If you want to pay the $848 for the 16GB model, we won&rsquo;t laugh.</p> <p>We also admire the 5c&rsquo;s commitment. If you&rsquo;re going to leave the world&rsquo;s Apple purists speechless at your abandonment of good taste, don&rsquo;t back off - right down to the atrocious cases and the collars-and-cuffs wallpapers.</p> <p>Lastly, we love the OS. Yes, we can see every one of the things that need fixing, and we know that iOS 7 could have been so much wilder. But the new OS is beautiful, and we like celebrating the delightful, rather than meanly fixating on every failing.&nbsp;</p> <p>All that said, there remains one question - what would we do?</p> <p>With its 64-bit guts, fingerprint tech and weaponised camera, the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/iphone-5s/review" target="_blank">iPhone 5s for an extra $140</a>&nbsp;is too much to resist. Unlike the creaky plastic that clads the Samsung Galaxy range, the 5C’s hard-coated polycarbonate feels robust – a premium material in other words. It’s colourful too, available in five bright finishes that set it aside from the more sober, more grown-up iPhone 5 and 5S. The screen is, of course, glass.</p> <p>The iPhone 5 and 5S are near-identical in build quality and design. Made of glass and aluminium, they’re lightweight, thin and elegant. It’s a quality of finish almost unmatched in the smartphone world (the HTC One beats it, just). The iPhone 5 comes in two finishes (black and slate or white and silver) while the iPhone 5S comes in three: Space Grey, silver and, yes, gold. The gold option is controversial, but Apple has done a fine job of keeping it subtle and toning down the gaudiness. There’s also an improved home button on the 5S, which conceals a fingerprint scanner.</p> <p>Which iPhone is the best is really down to personal preference. The 5C screams youth and craziness while the 5S is a little more buttoned-down and elegant. This’ll come in very handy for fitness and mapping apps – it’s expected that it’ll be used for indoor mapping.</p> <p><strong>Winner: iPhone 5S</strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="iPhone 5S" alt="iPhone 5S" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/iphone-5s-gold_0.jpg?1379103403" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Camera </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Again, the iPhone 5 and 5C appear to, to all intents and purposes, share the same camera hardware: an 8MP sensor, F2.4 aperture and LED flash.
