These can light up to show notifications even when the cover is closed &ndash; but will of course require power. Apple suggests the case could be connected to the iPad via some new form of MagSafe cable or contacts able to carry electricity, or else use its own battery and some form of inductive charging.</p> <p>Apple also outlines a passive Smart Cover with translucent portions that would allow light to shine through from the iPad&rsquo;s screen. This solves the power issue because the screen&rsquo;s own backlight is used.</p> <p>Both the active and passive solutions would use colours, symbols, shapes and words to create notifications. For example, if the iPad user receives a new email, a letter symbol could appear on the front of the Smart Cover. If it&rsquo;s an email marked as important, the symbol could be larger, or coloured red. Alerts could be dismissed through use of the iPad&rsquo;s hardware controls like volume or power.</p> <p>As always with patents, it shouldn&rsquo;t be assumed that the things described within will ever become products. However, they can give an indication of what might appear in the future. This particular patent was filed back in 2012, so it could be that Apple has already put over a year of work into designing, prototyping and producing illuminated Smart Covers.</p> <p>[Via: <a href="http://appleinsider.com/articles/14/06/12/apples-smarter-smart-cover-users-with-illuminated-notifications">AppleInsider</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/apple-ipad-5/review">Apple iPad Air review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Apple iPad patent plots a smarter Smart Cover" alt="Apple iPad patent plots a smarter Smart Cover" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-smart-cover-patent.jpg?1402963711" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/apple-ipad-patent-plots-smarter-smart-cover/news#comments Apple iPad Air iPad Mini Tablets Mon, 16 Jun 2014 09:15:43 +0000 Tein Hee Seow 1439306 at http://www.stuff.tv Microsoft Surface Pro 3 vs Apple iPad Air: the weigh-in http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/microsoft-surface-pro-3-vs-apple-ipad-air-weigh/feature <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> The new Surface is a powerful, pixel-packed tablet with laptop pretensions. At just 9.1mm thick, it&#39;s noticeably slimmer than the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/microsoft/microsoft-surface-pro-2/review">Surface Pro 2</a>, which was a veritable beefcake at 13.5mm. Of course overall it&#39;s a much larger device than its predecessor, with its 12in screen resulting in a 292x201mm frame.&nbsp;Despite that increased display size, it&#39;s actually lighter than the Pro 2 - 800g to 900g - and that can only be good news when it comes to single-handed use.&nbsp;</p> <p>Compare it to the iPad Air, though, and it starts to look almost chunky. Apple&#39;s flagship tablet is a mere 7.5mm deep and measures 240x165mm around. Even more impressively, it weighs in at only 469g. Pick them both up and you won&#39;t have to ask which one has &#39;Air&#39; in its name. Offset against that is the fact that&nbsp;you do lose a fair bit of screen space with the 9.7in iPad.</p> <p>It&#39;s hard to make a call on aesthetics without having used the Surface Pro 3, but from what we have seen it&#39;s a nice looking device, with thin bezels and a custom-machined magnesium body. It&#39;s also tough: at the launch, Microsoft&#39;s Panos Panay intentionally dropped it onstage from shoulder height, and it didn&#39;t show so much as a scratch. You wouldn&#39;t want to try that with an iPad Air.</p> <p>The Surface Pro 3&#39;s integrated kickstand has been massively improved, with the result that you can set it at any angle from 22 to 150 degrees and it will happily stay put. And maybe most impressively of all, though the Surface requires a fan to cool down its powerful processor, Microsoft has managed to make it so small that you won&#39;t hear it (or feel it) in use.</p> <p>The iPad Air has no such trickery: it&#39;s a tablet through and through. That said, it is the nicest looking tablet we&#39;ve used, with a gorgeous aluminium unibody and subtle curves in all the right places.</p> <p>It&#39;s hard to say which we prefer without having seen the Surface Pro 3 up close, so at this stage we&#39;re going to call it a draw.</p> <p><em><strong>Winner: Draw</strong></em></p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/icheapskate-25-best-free-apps-iphone-and-ipad/feature">iCheapskate - the 30 best apps for iPhone and iPad</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1600" height="900" title="The Surface Pro 3&#039;s Kickstand in use" alt="Which tablet? The Surface Pro 3 proudly sports a 12in display, up from the Surface Pro 2&#39;s 10.6 inches and considerably bigger than the iPad&#39;s 9.7in screen.</p> <p>It also has a relatively unusual aspect ratio - 3:2, whereas most tablets are a widescreen 16:9 or 16:10 and the iPad is a squarer 4:3. By sitting between the two extremes, Microsoft presumably hopes that the Surface Pro 3 will be as well suited to films as it is to productivity and browsing.</p> <p>Both the iPad and Surface Pro 3 have full HD displays, and there&#39;s not much between them in terms of resolution: the iPad&#39;s screen is 2048 x 1536, while the Surface Pro 3&#39;s is 2160 x 1440. However the fact that the Surface Pro 3&#39;s display is so much bigger means that it loses out to the iPad in the pixel density stakes, managing 216ppi to the iPad Air&#39;s 264.&nbsp;</p> <p>Will that matter in practice? Probably. Without having viewed the Surface Pro 3&#39;s screen up close it&#39;s hard to be certain, but the difference is big enough that it ought to be noticeable.&nbsp;</p> <p>Of course there&#39;s more to a screen than mere pixels, and here the Surface also faces a tough fight to best its rival. In our <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/apple-ipad-5/review">review of the iPad Air</a> we stated that it is &quot;still the best screen we&#39;ve ever encountered on a tablet&quot;, praising its superb viewing angles, vivid colours and excellent contrast. Again, it&#39;s hard to judge the Pro 3 against it without having used it, but at this stage we&#39;ll have to award this round to the iPad.</p> <p><em><strong>Winner: Apple iPad Air</strong></em></p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/microsoft/windows-phone-81/review">Windows Phone 8.1 review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The iPad Air has a 9.7in screen, to the Pro 3&#039;s 12in one" alt="Which tablet? At least not within earshot of it. It runs on a proper Intel Core processor of either i3, i5 or i7 variety, has 4GB or 8GB of RAM and storage options run from 64GB up to a whopping 512GB. All of which should mean that it flies through even demanding tasks such as running full Windows 8 software including Photoshop.</p> <p>If the Pro 3 is a heavyweight, then beside it the iPad Air looks like something of a flyweight: dual-core ARM A7 chip, just under 1GB of RAM and storage that maxes out at 128GB. For all that, it packs a mighty punch, never stuttering in our experience with it and scoring highly on the AnTuTu benchmarking tool.</p> <p>The other type of power that we&#39;re concerned in here is the kind that comes out of a battery. The iPad Air is best described as a typical all-day device - use it sensibly, for instance reducing brightness where necessary, and you&#39;ll get a decent 8 or 9 hours out of it. And that&#39;s assuming you cane it as much as we tend to; use it for the odd bit of browsing here, the occasional game there and you&#39;ll get a few days from it.</p> <p>We can&#39;t pass judgement on the Pro 3 without having tested it, but the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/microsoft/microsoft-surface-pro-2/review">Pro 2</a> fared considerably better than the original model, so we have high hopes that Microsoft&#39;s claim of 9hrs&#39; use will be relatively accurate, at least on the lower-specced models.</p> <p>The differences between the devices are particularly apparent in this category: the Pro 3 is a designed to be a laptop replacement as much as a tablet, and its specs show that. So while the iPad is near flawless at doing what it does, the Pro 3 is always going to be capable of more demanding tasks, and for that reason we&#39;re going to award it this round.</p> <p><em><strong>Winner: Microsoft Surface Pro 3</strong></em></p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/macbook-air-retina-display/review">MacBook Air With Retina Display preview</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The Pro 3 is packed with powerful innards" alt="Which tablet? Accordingly, the Surface Pro 3 has plenty of power, a built-in kickstand for desktop working, a magnetic type cover for productivity (more on that below) and plenty of connections. In short, you can use the Pro 3 as a laptop replacement, and Windows 8 will give you everything you need to do that.</p> <p>Admittedly, not everyone is smitten with Windows&#39; brave new break from the traditional desktop OS, but its <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/microsoft/windows-81/review">update to 8.1</a> has fixed many of the flaws that bedevilled it at launch, and if you need a device that really can do almost anything, this may well be it. Windows 8&#39;s Achilles heel remains the lack of apps on the Windows Store. Yes, that&#39;s less of a problem on full Win 8 than it is on the stripped-back RT version, but it may well still frustrate you if you&#39;re looking for the kind of mobile-optimised games and apps that fill the Apple App Store. Still, the Pro 3 will come with the full Office suite installed as standard.</p> <p>Apple also broke with the past on its latest OS, ditching the skeuomorphic design that had characterised previous iterations and giving <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/ios-7/ios-7/review">iOS 7</a> a flat, colourful makeover straight from the pen of Jony Ive. It also got various other much-needed updates, including a proper notifications bar and Control Centre. While we applaud the changes, the important thing about iOS is that it&#39;s still the best place to find the best apps. And though Android may be catching up, Apple still leads the way for tablet-optimised fare. Plus, you now get the whole of Apple&#39;s iWork and iLife package for free - that&#39;s iMovie, iPhoto, Garageband, Pages, Numbers, Keynote and the rest.</p> <p>So, it&#39;s another case of horses for courses here. If you want to run proper desktop software, give the Pro 3 a look. If you want to play the latest mobile games and pick from the biggest selection of innovative apps, it&#39;s the iPad.</p> <p><em><strong>Winner: Draw</strong></em></p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/ios-8/review">iOS 8 preview</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1601" height="900" title="Windows 8.1" alt="Which tablet? The Type Cover is the biggie; you&#39;ll have seen it before on the previous Surfaces, but it now seals itself to the screen magnetically in order to give you a firmer working space. Coupled with the kickstand, it could finally nail the problem of using a tablet as a productivity tool. It also now has a bigger trackpad, which is never a bad thing.</p> <p>The second extra is the Pro 3&#39;s Stylus, which has also had a makeover since the last model. It&#39;s now powered by tech from N-trig rather than Wacom and slots into the Type Cover when not in use. It has a rather neat new trick, too: press the button on its top and the tablet will instantly fire up the OneNote app, even if the Pro 3 was switched off. Scribble your missive, tap the button again and your note will be synced to the cloud.&nbsp;</p> <p>Thirdly, there&#39;s a Docking Station which adds three USB3.0 and two USB2.0 ports, Ethernet and 4K output through its Mini DisplayPort.</p> <p>The iPad&#39;s hardly short of accessories itself, with third-party manufacturers maintaining a constant stream of cases, Bluetooth keyboards, styluses, speaker docks and the rest. You could comfortably buy an iPad Air and 11in MacBook Air for the price of the cheapest i7 Surface Pro 3.</p> <p>And in many ways, that&#39;s the point. Microsoft is gambling that people would rather have one do-it-all device than two do-some-of-it products, and will pay accordingly. Maybe they will. But we can&#39;t help feeling that if they&#39;d settled for a smaller profit margin on this occasion, many, many more might do so.</p> <p>Either way, the Surface Pro 3 looks like a lovely device that we can&#39;t wait to test out. So, would we recommend it over the iPad Air? Really, it depends on what you&#39;re looking for. The iPad, with its smaller form, cheaper price and supremely stocked App Store, still looks like the best bet for casual use. The Pro 3, with its full Windows 8 software, Intel power and larger screen, should be the better bet for working on the go. So, inevitably, we&#39;re going to call it a draw, at least until we&#39;ve given the Surface Pro 3 our full review treatment.</p> <p><em><strong>Winner: Draw&nbsp;</strong></em></p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/tablets/top-ten">These are the 10 best tablets in the world right now</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1600" height="900" title="And our winner is... neither of them. Both are just 7.5mm thick.</p> <p>The poor old iPad 4 sticks with its relatively retro-looking and hefty build in comparison - it&#39;s 652g compared to the Air&#39;s svelte 469g. This is a tablet you might leave at home but it&#39;s still sturdy and perfectly finished.&nbsp;</p> <p>The wide black frame of the iPad 4 has been reduced substantially on the longer sides of the Air. Because it&#39;s much thinner than big iPads of yore, the Air no longer has to do the tapered edge trick, instead sporting a more squared-off edge, identical to the Mini Retina.</p> <p>Both the Air and Mini Retina are available in either &#39;Space Grey&#39; (with a black frame) or &#39;Silver&#39; (with a white frame), shrouded in a single-part aluminium case. The iPad 4 has to make do with the less exciting &#39;black&#39; or &#39;white&#39;, which is apt considering its similarly prosaic design.</p> <p>There&#39;s really nothing between the two newer tablets on this score. The iPad Mini is slightly more of a take-anywhere tablet due to its dinky size, but ultimately we&#39;ll call this one a tie.</p> <p><strong>Winner:</strong> draw - iPad Mini with Retina and iPad Air&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/ultimate-setup-apple-ipad-mini-retina-display/feature" target="_blank">The 10 best accessories for the Apple iPad Mini with Retina Display</a></strong></p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/ultimate-setup-apple-ipad-air/feature" target="_blank">The 11 best accessories for the Apple iPad Air</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Apple iPad Mini with Retina Display" alt="Which iPad? The Air&#39;s colours are very vivid - check out iOS 7 icons - and it&#39;s a slightly brighter, crisper screen.</p> <p>The Mini doesn&#39;t lag behind on pixel specs, sharing its 2048x1536 resolution with&nbsp;the two full-sized iPads. That&#39;s dense enough to make pixel edges invisible to most eyes on the iPad Air and iPad 4, but the Mini Retina beats that (for what it&#39;s worth) with an even greater pixel density due to its smaller screen size.</p> <p>The Mini&#39;s screen is excellent, but the Air has more accurate colour reproduction, with the Mini struggling with some hues, reds in particular. Even though that&#39;s not something you&#39;re likely to notice unless you have a trained eye, together with the increased display area it means the Air should be the first choice for anyone heavily into graphics or video work. Indoors it&#39;s quite practical and comfortable on any of the three to reduce the brightness slider by as much as 50%, which will help stretch out the already impressive battery life.</p> <p><strong>Winner:</strong> iPad Air</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/apple-iphone-6/review" target="_blank">Everything you need to know about iPhone 6</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> BATTERY LIFE </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The iPad 4 has to find room for a pretty fat battery in order to drive its screen for ten hours, but somehow the Air has just as much stamina despite its slimmer chassis.&nbsp; Not only that, but it charges in less time too. In real terms that means it doesn&#39;t need a full night plugged into the mains to get back to 100%.</p> <p>In our real-life tests, the Air is averaging between one and two days before it needs rejuicing. The Mini Retina makes the same 10-hour battery life claims, which are realistic, but in our experience it doesn&#39;t quite match the two bigger models for real-world stamina.</p> <p><strong>Winner:</strong> iPad Air</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/ios-8/review" target="_blank">iOS 8 preview</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Apple iPad Air" alt="Which iPad? At 6.4mm thin, the modelesque Xperia Z2 tablet makes the 7.9mm Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014) and even the 7.5mm iPad Air look like chunky monkeys. Argue all you want about volume instead of mere dimensions, the Xperia Z2 tablet wins the weight war at just 439g, while the 478g iPad Air and 547g Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014) prove to be heavyweights - in a bad way.</p> <p>All three tablets are gorgeous in their own right, with their slimmed down bezels, clean lines, and glass-slabbed fronts. But start to really feel them and you&rsquo;ll notice the difference. What looks good from afar might not always translate to the best experience in hand. The Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014) immediately loses favour with its plastic and faux-leather clothing combination, which surprisingly does nothing to help it weigh less next to the other two tablets, which are draped in sleek metal.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/apple-ipad-5/review" target="_blank">Apple iPad Air review</a></strong></p> <p>We would lean towards the iPad Air&rsquo;s indisputably premium looks and smooth curves, if not for the fact that the Xperia Z2 Tablet&#39;s secret weapon - waterproof ability.&nbsp; Not content with just being waterproof, the Xperia Z2 Tablet is also dust and scratch-resistant to keep it looking as good as the day it emerged from the box. It&rsquo;s trying its best to keep up somewhere in the back, thanks to its not-quite-there proprietary dual-core 1.4GHz A7 processor.</p> <p class="p1">While both Android tablets pack 3GB RAM, the Xperia Z2 Tablet comes up tops for being armed with the numbers to potentially handle the endless lists of tasks you might set for it without skipping a beat.</p> <p class="p1"><strong>Winner: </strong>Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="604" height="453" title="Performance: The race of haste" alt="Performance: The race of haste" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-xperia-z2-tablet-main_2.jpg?1393982235" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Performance: The race of haste" alt="Performance: The race of haste" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Apple-iPad-Air-review-Infinity-Blade-III_1_1.png?1393982235" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Battery: Live long and prosper </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>What&rsquo;s the point of being feature-packed to the extent of unsustainability? It&rsquo;s the battle of the big tablets: in one corner, Apple&rsquo;s flagship slate, the iPad Air; in the other, Samsung&rsquo;s maxi-sized, high-powered Galaxy NotePRO 12.2.</p> <p>Which is the king of the king-sized tabs? Now that we&rsquo;ve had the chance to review both models, we&rsquo;re in a position to tell you. Seconds out: it&rsquo;s go time.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/sg/users/sam-kieldsen" title="View user profile.">Sam Kieldsen</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Design: real metal vs fake leather </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Before we get on to the tablets&rsquo; respective stylings, a quick word about their size. As its name suggests, the 9.7in iPad Air is lightweight: 469g (478g for the cellular version) and 7.5mm thick. The Samsung Galaxy NotePRO 12.2in? Not so much. This 12.2in behemoth tips the scales at 750g &ndash; unlike the iPad, it&rsquo;s too hefty to comfortably hold one-handed. It&rsquo;s more a tray-blet than than a tablet, with the surface area of two iPad Minis combined! Samsung has managed to squeeze its thickness down to just 8mm, though. </p><p>Design-wise, Samsung has stuck with textured, leather-effect hard plastic for the NotePRO 12.2&rsquo;s backside, plus metal-look sides. We quite like the way the tablet feels in the hand (there&rsquo;s no flex in it, despite its size) and despite the faux-leather expanse on its reverse it manages to not look totally naff &ndash; but nobody with any sense of taste could say it matches the preeminent elegance of the iPad Air&rsquo;s metal-and-glass build, not to mention its solidity and overall feeling of quality. Samsung has a hell of a way to go to catch up with Apple in terms of creating devices that are truly beautiful.</p> <p>The NotePRO 12.2 is designed to be used in landscape the majority of the time &ndash; Samsung&rsquo;s decision to locate the physical home button (which is flanked by capacitive back and menu controls) on one of the long edges makes it tricky to hit when using the tablet in portrait orientation. The iPad Air&rsquo;s smaller size and lower weight means it can be used comfortably in either orientation.</p> <p>Obviously the NotePRO&rsquo;s size was always going to make it heavier and more unwieldy than the iPad Air, but even if they were equal in those respects, Apple&rsquo;s superior styling and eye for design would get the nod.</p> <p><strong>Winner: Apple iPad Air</strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Apple iPad Air" alt="Apple iPad Air" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/ipad-air-back.jpg?1392859412" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Samsung Galaxy NotePRO 12.2" alt="Samsung Galaxy NotePRO 12.2" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/notepro%20122%20back.JPG?1392859412" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Screen legends </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The iPad Air boasts a 9.7in screen with a 2048 x 1536 resolution, which gives it a pixel density of 264ppi. The iPad Air&rsquo;s deep blacks and facility with detail make it better suited for video playback and games, while the Galaxy NotePRO 12.2&rsquo;s excellent contrast gives it the edge for web browsing and word processing. That&rsquo;s plenty of power on tap: more than enough to run four apps simultaneously via Multi Window and handle the latest games (although the tablet&rsquo;s sheer size makes it unsuited for gaming).</p> <p>The iPad Air&rsquo;s specs might not beat the NotePRO&rsquo;s on paper (dual-core 1.4GHz A7 processor, under 1GB of RAM), but it&rsquo;s similarly slick when it comes to day-to-day use. In fact, going by Geekbench 3 the iPad Air is a fair bit quicker &ndash; although we don&rsquo;t advise you put too much stock in benchmarks. The iPad also feature a 64-bit processor (something that may be significant in the future, if not greatly so now). On raw specs, the NotePRO has it.</p> <p>In terms of battery life, the two tablets performed almost exactly the same in our HD rundown test: the NotePRO lasts a heck of a long time considering its huge screen.</p> <p>Connectivity-wise, the NotePRO packs dual-band Wi-Fi, USB 3.0, Bluetooth 4.0 and optional 3G/4G. The Air offers much the same, minus USB 3.0 which it supplants with its Lightning port.</p> <p><strong>Winner: Samsung Galaxy NotePRO 12.2</strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Apple iPad Air" alt="Apple iPad Air" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Apple-iPad-Air-review-Garageband.jpg?1392859412" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Samsung Galaxy NotePRO 12.2" alt="Samsung Galaxy NotePRO 12.2" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/notepro%20122%20multi%20window.JPG?1392859412" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> OS and apps </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>A hard one to compare, this, because they&rsquo;re so different. Apple has iTunes and the App Store, giving iPad users access to the best-stocked digital shops around (Google Play isn&rsquo;t at all bad, but iTunes has it beat) and a heap of apps tuned specifically for Retina display screens; Android is rather poorly served when it comes to apps suitable for large tablets. The NotePRO has the advantage of its S Pen stylus, which allows you to jot down notes, make sketches and circle details to remember for later. It&rsquo;s a great tool for productivity and on-the-go working, and Magazine UX includes a number of handy widgets and apps tailored for the device.</p> <p>Which one is best? Both are flagship slates for their parent companies, and both have their own unique advantages and disadvantages.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/sg/users/stephen-graves" title="View user profile.">Stephen Graves</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Metal vs pleather </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Both tablets borrow design cues from elsewhere in their respective ranges; in the case of the iPad Air, that means iPad Mini-style lines, complete with slimmed-down screen bezel. The Note, meanwhile, draws on the Galaxy Note 3&#39;s pleather-and-plastic design, complete with fake stitching on the back.</p> <p>Of the two, the iPad Air&#39;s the standout in terms of design; it&#39;s a mere 7.5mm thin, with no give in it. And it&#39;s light, too &ndash; 469g or 478g, depending on whether you opt for the Wi-Fi only or cellular version. Beware, though: all that Space Grey aluminium will scratch easily.</p> <p>The Note&#39;s well put-together &ndash; there&#39;s little to no flex in it, and the manufacturing is seamless. However, its symphony of plastic and faux-leather just looks plain tacky on a device this size &ndash; and the pleather doesn&#39;t have the grippy, soft-touch feel of the Galaxy Note 3&#39;s similar back to recommend it.</p> <p>That metal-effect plastic edging is pretty unimpressive next to the iPad&#39;s metal-and glass build, too &ndash; and it doesn&#39;t yield a weight saving, with the Note coming in at around 540g depending on which version you pick up. That said, the Note feels solid in the hand, and has a pleasing heft to it. But in terms of looks, there&#39;s no contest &ndash; the iPad Air walks away with it.</p> <p><em>Winner</em>: <strong>iPad Air</strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Apple iPad Air" alt="Apple iPad Air" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Apple-iPad-Air-review-build-camera_2.png?1391486097" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1" alt="Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-note-10-1-2014-review-extras.JPG?1391486097" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1" alt="Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-note-10-1-review-build-1_0.JPG?1391486097" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="1200" height="900" title="Apple iPad Air" alt="Apple iPad Air" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Apple-iPad-Air-review-iBooks_2.png?1391486097" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Screen </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Note 10.1&#39;s screen is glorious &ndash; &quot;one of the best we&#39;ve ever seen on a 10in tablet,&quot; as Stuff&#39;s own Sophie Charara puts it. Fonts are crisp, and it delivers wide viewing angles. And with multiple screen mode options, it&#39;s versatile, too.</p> <p>Although the Air&#39;s Retina display may not match up in terms of pixel count, it&#39;s plenty sharp enough, though &ndash; and it has the edge over the Note when watching video, with true-to-life colours and dynamic imagery. &quot; No matter what you chuck at it, the Retina does the job brilliantly,&quot; we said. And that power is backed up by the benchmarks, too, with the Note managing a respectable score of 2871 on Geekbench 3 in our test.</p> <p>That&#39;s a step ahead of the iPad Air&#39;s Geekbench score of 2696 &ndash; and it&#39;s not surprising, since the iPad&#39;s proprietary dual-core 1.4GHz A7 processor and 1GB RAM don&#39;t quite measure up to the Note&#39;s internals. That said, Apple&#39;s 64-bit processor is handily future-proofed (<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/whats-all-fuss-about-64-bit-smartphones-iphone-5s-and-samsung-galaxy-s5-anyway/feature" target="_blank">find out what the fuss is all about here</a>), and app developers are slowly starting to optimise their wares for the extra headroom.</p> <p>Of course, it&#39;s what you do with those specs that count, and the iPad Air is delightfully smooth. With every single app we&#39;d opened running in the background, we still got &quot;zero stutter when dropping five-minute long HD clips into the iMovie timeline, resizing and rearranging, playing back the preview and adding music.&quot;</p> <p>The Note, meanwhile, &quot;chews through demanding games like a croc through soft fudge,&quot; but could still do with some optimisation in terms of software; there&#39;s a noticeable pause between tapping an app and it opening, and &quot;as we set a tonne of Android apps downloading to the tab at once, the shiny widgets on the main homescreen flickered and entered a reload loop meltdown just short of a full crash.&quot;</p> <p>Still, the grunt&#39;s there, and on raw specs, we have to give the trophy to Samsung for this round.</p> <p><em>Winner</em>: <strong>Samsung</strong></p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/25-fantastic-free-android-games/feature" target="_blank">25 fantastic free Android games</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Apple iPad Air" alt="Apple iPad Air" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Apple-iPad-Air-review-iMovie_2.png?1391486097" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014)" alt="Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014)" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-note-10-1-review-s-pen-options_0.JPG?1391486097" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Connectivity </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>In terms of ports, there&#39;s surprising parity between the two tablets; the The Note packs in microUSB 2.0 and microSD up to 64GB, plus an IR blaster. Yes, Android fans will doubtless carp that features like the Control Centre appear suspiciously familiar, but Apple&#39;s done a great job of presenting those features. The UI design is slick and stripped-back, and the controls are intuitive &ndash; although Apple&#39;s continuing refusal to add homescreen widgets and customisation options remains a point of contention.</p> <p>Apple&#39;s not-so-secret weapons are, of course, iTunes and the App Store &ndash; &quot;the biggest and best-curated digital shops available, despite fierce competition from Google Play.&quot; 10in Android tablets still lag behind in terms of essential apps, though the number is gradually increasing. There are no official Twitter or Facebook apps available for 10in &#39;droids, for instance, and while the BBC iPlayer has finally made its way onto larger Android tablets, the Note 10.1 doesn&#39;t yet support programme downloads.</p> <p>Which operating system you pick largely comes down to your own preferences and priorities. With the Note, you get Android&#39;s more open platform (complete with a proper file and folder structure), plus more options for customisation and homescreen widgets. So which comes out on top?</p> <p>The iPad Air offers gorgeous design, an impressive screen and a shedload of apps thanks to Apple&#39;s App Store. The Note 10.1 delivers plenty of grunt with its 3GB RAM, 1.9GHz processor and 299ppi screen &ndash; and its S Pen stylus is genuinely useful once you&#39;ve got the hang of it. You won&#39;t find a better multimedia device anywhere near that price.</p> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/google-nexus-7-2013/review">Read our Google Nexus 7 (2013) review</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Google Nexus 7 2013 (from £200)" alt="Google Nexus 7 2013 (from £200)" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/nexus-7-verdict.jpg?1387184381" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Runner-up: Asus Fonepad </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Fonepad proves how cheerful cheap can be. However the unibody design is the only thing that they have in common and other than that, their design directions are really a far cry from each other.</p> <p>Apple of course has gone with its signature aluminium and taken its design cues from the iPad Mini. They’ve managed to shrink the thickness of the tablet to the same size as its smaller counterpart and that is no mean feat. Its build quality is undeniable and the attention to detail, from the milled holes to the laser-cut chamfers, just gives it that all round classy but sexy look.</p> <p>On the other hand, the Nokia Lumia 2520 is the total opposite of the iPad Air. Where the latter goes for metal, the former uses plastic, or as Nokia would call it, recycled polycarbonate. Not that it’s cheap looking, far from it. In fact Samsung ought to take a page out of Nokia’s book if they wanted to use plastic (sorry, we mean polycarbonate) and still make their devices look less… well, cheap. The design of the Lumia 2520 falls in line with the rest of the other Lumia devices, leaving no doubt as to what its heritage is. And with 4 bright and loud colours, the Lumia 2520 is really shouting out that it’s young, hip and fashionable.</p> <p>That being said, as hip as the Lumia 2520 is, it doesn’t look bleeding edge. It still makes for a fancy looking gadget but we wouldn't say that it'll really turn heads. The iPad Air on the other hand just pushes the design of the iPad further. Yes, it may lack additional colour options, but so what? We’ll still look good when we're whipping it out.</p> <p><strong>Winner:</strong>&nbsp;Apple iPad Air</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-ipad-air-08_0_0_2.jpg?1383274016" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="730" height="510" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/700-nokia_lumia_2520_colorrange.jpg?1383274016" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Screen wars </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The iPad Air of course still maintains its Retina screen and despite its shrunken down size, still manages to pack 2048 x 1536 resolution into a 9.7in&nbsp;screen. With a pixel density of 218, it’s lower than that of the iPad Air.&nbsp; It does however have some nifty features including Nokia’s ClearBlack Display filter that cuts the glare from the tablet's screen, making outdoor visibility even better. That’s pretty awesome for a tablet as you’re more often than not going to be using it outdoors.</p> <p>Though the pixel density of the Lumia is lower than the iPad Air’s, the inclusion of its ClearBlack Display gives the Lumia an edge. The front camera is a 2-megapixel affair and should be more than sufficient for video calls.</p> <p>In contrast, the iPad Air still has the same cameras that the iPad 4 had, both back and front. It has maintained the same 5-megapixel iSight camera at the back as well as the 1.2-megapixel HD camera up front so you can expect the same quality of shots and video calls that was seen in the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/apple-ipad-4/review" target="_blank">iPad 4</a>.</p> <p>It’s interesting that Nokia decided not to integrate their PureView camera into the Lumia 2520, but they did at least decide to put a more than decent camera into the tablet. The ability to unlock the phone and buy stuff with a touch is a genuine life enhancement (albeit a little one). We got so excited about it, we came up with<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/9-genius-uses-iphone-5s-touch-id-fingerprint-sensor/feature" target="_blank"> 9 genius uses for the tech</a> of our own.</p> <p class="p1">But there's no TouchID here. The decision to leave it out might have been a cost-saving exercise or a space-saving exercise, but there's probably more to it than that. iPads are often family devices that you wouldn't necessarily want to lock to specific people's digits,&nbsp;for example.</p> <p class="p1">Either way, Apple no doubt focused grouped the hell out of its usage scenarios before deciding whether to include it or not. Although far from a necessary upgrade, we would have liked TouchID, and including it would have given the Air an additional point of differentiation from the Android hordes.</p> <p class="p1">Nevertheless, first impressions suggest it's an iPad 4-beating device, and<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/tablets/top-ten" target="_blank"> according to our Top 10</a> that makes the iPad Air the best tablet money can buy right now. Is it a must-upgrade? If you have an iPad 4, no: the experience isn't vastly different, although the hardware is dramatically smaller. If you're on an iPad 3 or earlier, you'll certainly notice the speed bump. Anything older that that and it's high time to enter the age of Retina screens (you'll get that nice skinny bezel as a bonus).</p> <p class="p1">Will you be upgrading?
