Singapore, take note: Xiaomi's Redmi Note is coming, priced at S$199

At that price, the Android-powered phablet will make short work of its competition

Xiaomi’s affordable phablet is finally coming, two months after it was slated for an appearance on its online stores. Priced at an insanely low price of S$199, it'll be available from 8 July, 12 noon.

Throughout the week, Xiaomi has also been running a competition on its Facebook page for Mi fans to guess the Redmi Note’s price. Most of the guesses were spot on, based from the prices in China, which have been pegged at 799 yuan and 999 yuan for the 1.4GHz and 1.7GHz models respectively.

The pricing makes the Redmi Note the first under S$200 phablet here, though the insanely low price comes with a catch. Despite its massive 5.5in display and 3200mAh battery, both of which are standard hardware for current phablets, its screen resolution is an average 1280 x 720 pixels. For a smaller screen, the lower screen resolution might not make a huge difference, but at 5.5-inches, its 267ppi display density might be a concern if you're nitpicky about screen quality.

Based on numbers alone, the Redmi Note seems like a wickedly powerful device. The variant available here uses the Mediatek 8-core 1.7GHz processor, which also means it comes with 2GB of RAM. It also has a sufficiently powerful 5MP front camera to satisfy selfie addicts. Tempted as you might be to go nuts with the 13MP rear camera, note that its internal storage is somewhat limited at 8GB, so invest in a (relatively cheap) microSD card to load your movies, music and photos.

Like its smaller sibling, the Redmi and upcoming Redmi 1S, expect the Xiaomi Redmi Note to be a coveted phone, mainly because there’s limited stock for each sales run. The only inkling we have for the numbers is this - 7000 Xiaomi products were sold each week, which includes its phones and accessories such as its massive 10,400mAh power banks.

Likewise, there'll be a limited supply of Redmi Notes when it goes on sale. The first wave will see 5000 sets of Redmi Note will be available on 8 July from 12 noon on Xiaomi Singapore's website. Expect lots of campers waiting to grab the phablet, so remember, fastest fingers first.
