The game involved a &lsquo;house on a disk&rsquo;. Shortly after loading it, a little bloke would walk around a three-storey building that looked rather more palatial than the one I lived in at the time. He&rsquo;d open all the doors and cupboards, nip off and get his dog, and then rap on the screen and start demanding things.</p> <p>My LCP was a mean poker player and also a lazy sod who&rsquo;d never shut any doors. From the brief, it seems only more experienced Ingress players will be allowed to create missions though Niantic plans to eventually open up the missions to level five players and above.</p> <p>Why do the missions matter? They add a new purpose for players, especially those who are either new to it or starting to get bored. What happens is that a mission objective is created and thus you start a walking tour of sorts that has a beginning and end, with the reward being virtual medals.</p> <p>Each mission will have ratings and estimated completion times so you will know if it&#39;s worth your while. This could be a fun way for Ingress users frustrated at the slow levelling time it can take and how difficult it can be for solo players just starting out. Leveling is done by capturing portals or attacking enemy portals and at low levels, it&#39;s harder to collect points unless of course you&#39;re in an Ingress territory with plenty of people to help weaken portals for you.</p> <p>So if you spend a lot of time travelling and want to play a game that you can pick up from wherever you left off, then Ingress&#39; low-commitment (though highly battery-sapping) premise just might be for you!</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:</strong> <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/app-week">Why not check out our fun Apps of the Week?</a></p> <p>[Source: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2014/09/25/ingress-missions/" target="_blank">Engadget</a>]</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/NPIWrOvHogg" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/ingress-gives-you-more-reason-play-new-user-generated-missions/news" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/sg/ingress-gives-you-more-reason-play-new-user-generated-missions/news#comments Android apps Android games Apps and Games Fri, 26 Sep 2014 06:38:23 +0000 Erna Mahyuni 1448622 at http://www.stuff.tv App of the Week: CounterSpy http://www.stuff.tv/sg/app-week-counterspy/review <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> It’s a sneaky side-scrolling spy ‘em up with a snazzy art style and randomly generated levels </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="App of the Week: CounterSpy" alt="App of the Week: CounterSpy" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/counterspy-main.jpg?1411265617" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/sg/users/sam-kieldsen" title="View user profile.">Sam Kieldsen</a> </div> </div> </div> <p>It&rsquo;s fairly rare that an action-oriented game gets Stuff&rsquo;s App of the Week thumbs up, but this side-scroller from Sony&rsquo;s PlayStation Mobile division has wormed it way firmly into our affections.</p> <p>Set at the height of the Cold War, it casts you as a new recruit for C.O.U.N.T.E.R., an espionage agency allied neither with the Soviets nor the West. There&rsquo;s a noodly &lsquo;sandbox&rsquo; mode, too, accessible after beating three Odyssey sectors; this might seem throwaway, but it&rsquo;s useful for refining your understanding of the game&rsquo;s physics. The Android release additionally benefits from a new achievement system and enhanced visual/audio feedback that&rsquo;s made its way back to iOS in the Eliss Infinity 1.1 update.</p> <p>Bold, brilliant and somehow still as fresh as the pre-Infinity Eliss was on the iPhone way back in 2009, Eliss Infinity is just about as essential a purchase as you can get for your touchscreen device. You should buy it immediately.</p> <p><a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.littleeyes.eliss_infinity" target="_blank">Download Eliss Infinity for Android</a></p> <p><a routines and a way to keep tabs on our various social groups&mdash;so when it became known that some of us may have been unwittingly looped into a psychological experiment, the general reaction was rather negative. (And if it had been posted to Facebook during that span in 2012, perhaps some of your friends wouldn&rsquo;t have seen it. Or maybe they would have!)</p> <p>Adam Kramer, one of Facebook&rsquo;s data scientists, apologised Sunday in a public post to his own account, saying that the study was done to measure the emotional impact of the social networking site. You&#39;re an ethereal, bodiless force, floating along in an endless straight line in a surreal world filled with an assortment of giant glass shapes. And your sole purpose is to smash said shapes into oblivion.</p> <p>You&#39;re able to do this by flinging supply well-aimed metal balls at them. Dotted throughout the level are special glass pyramids and prisms. Smashing them adds more balls to your arsenal.&nbsp;</p> <p>Hit enough of these in a row and you have the ability to fire multiple balls at once, supercharging your destructive capabilities in the process.</p> <p>It&#39;s all very therapeutic at first. You&#39;re floating along at a relaxing &nbsp;pace, gently lobbing balls in a perfect arc, hitting your glass targets dead-centre, and generally feeling pretty damn good about yourself.&nbsp;</p> <p>The graphics are superb, and the music&#39;s otherworldly. Each shattering slab of glass leaves you with a feeling of immense satisfaction, like stepping on a deliciously crunchy leaf, or biting into the crust of a freshly-cooled baguette. Mmmm.</p> <p>After the first couple of zones, you&#39;ll notice that you&#39;re whizzing past faster than usual. No big deal, the way ahead is clear, and you&#39;ve got plenty of balls. In part, this was probably to avoid the world being flooded by the salty tears of Android fans sobbing that the latest and greatest iOS games often don&#39;t show up immediately (or at all) on their handsets and tablets. The iOS App Store in particular is always very keen to foist new games on visitors, but when presented with the latest Editor&#39;s Choice and other prominently positioned titles, what will that really mean? In the knowledge that promotion may have been traded for exclusivity, will objectivity become totally meaningless?</p> <p>You might argue it&#39;s naïve to think that&#39;s not been the case since day one, and it&#39;s true the App Store has hardly been a consistent bastion of good taste. However, there was always the sense the people behind the App Store were in the business of curation, at least attempting to showcase the best the store has to offer.&nbsp;</p> <p>If objectivity starts to become a mere afterthought following exclusivity when it comes to promotional activity, some games publishers will probably do very well in the short term, as people flock to download their products, simply due to visibility. Consumers, however, lose out in more games not very rapidly appearing across multiple platforms, and in being presented with titles that aren&#39;t necessarily that good, but that just happen to (for a while) not be available anywhere else.</p> <p>It confirms the App Store as not being any kind of meritocracy, instead turning it into the most typical of supermarkets, where placement is often dictated by business deals rather than quality. Perhaps Financial Director&#39;s Choice would be a more appropriate badge in future.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple-and-google-scrapping-secure-game-exclusivity/news" target="_blank">Apple and Google scrapping to secure game exclusivity</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Apple App Store Editor&#039;s Choice" alt="Apple App Store Editor&#039;s Choice" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/iphone-app-store-editors-choice-02.jpg?1399425105" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/will-objectivity-be-thrown-under-bus-google-and-apple-trade-video-game-exclusivity-promotion/feature" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/sg/will-objectivity-be-thrown-under-bus-google-and-apple-trade-video-game-exclusivity-promotion/feature#comments Android games Apps and Games iOS games Opinion Tue, 06 May 2014 15:47:42 +0000 Elissa Loi 1436666 at http://www.stuff.tv Apple and Google scrapping to secure game exclusivity http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple-and-google-scrapping-secure-game-exclusivity/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> A new battle is being fought in the OS war – and it’s all about restricting access to the most popular games </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Hitman GO, currently exclusive to iOS" alt="Hitman GO, currently exclusive to iOS" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/hitman-go-exclusive.jpg?1398131915" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>In a bid to increase the appeal of their respective mobile operating systems, Apple and Google are apparently scrabbling to snap up exclusive game rights for the most popular titles.</p> <p>The <em>Wall Street Journal</em> reports that, in order to secure total or timed exclusives for iOS or Android, the companies are offering game publishers tempting enticements. So the bad news is: exclusivity is almost certainly here to stay.</p> <p>[<a href="http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB10001424052702304626304579510020273541060?mg=reno64-wsj&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fonline.wsj.com%2Farticle%2FSB10001424052702304626304579510020273541060.html">Wall Street Journal</a> via <a href="http://thenextweb.com/mobile/2014/04/21/apple-and-google-are-reportedly-wooing-mobile-game-makers-as-they-seek-exclusivity">The Next Web</a>]</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple-and-google-scrapping-secure-game-exclusivity/news" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple-and-google-scrapping-secure-game-exclusivity/news#comments Android games Apps and Games iOS games Mon, 21 Apr 2014 11:36:44 +0000 Hafizah Osman 1435883 at http://www.stuff.tv 10 best apps for the HTC One (M8) http://www.stuff.tv/sg/htc/10-best-apps-htc-one-m8/feature <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Just acquired the beautiful new flagship smartphone from HTC?
