Existing iOS games controllers are pricey and mostly mediocre, games support is spotty, and those games that do support controllers often require the touchscreen for menus.</p> <p>The Apple TV itself still lacks its own App Store, and even if it had one, developers say creating games for it would be akin to working with an entirely new system, given how radically different the interface would be from other iOS devices. Even if they did make the effort, the Apple TV has a tiny amount of on-board memory, and so is hardly suited to anyone installing high-end games; a suitable bump in storage would almost certainly be met by a hefty change in price-tag, either splitting the Apple TV line or moving a solitary offering well outside of the current impulse-purchase price-bracket.</p> <p>So: the controllers aren&rsquo;t much cop, developers argue it would be a ton of work to support a more games-friendly Apple TV, existing hardware can&rsquo;t cope anyway, and a new Apple TV might put people off by being prohibitively expensive.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/moga-ace-power-first-official-iphone-games-controller/review" target="_blank">Moga Ace Power - the first official iPhone games controller review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="604" height="453" title="Steel Series&#039; Stratus controller" alt="Opinion: Amazon’s Fire TV shows it’s time for the Apple TV to embrace gaming" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/steel-series-stratus.jpg?1398302671" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="604" height="453" title="Moga Ace Power controller" alt="Opinion: Amazon’s Fire TV shows it’s time for the Apple TV to embrace gaming" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/ACE%20POWER%201_0.png?1398302671" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Still, none of those problems is insurmountable; the bigger issue is probably that Apple still doesn&rsquo;t seem to get gaming, nor seem to really care about it. There&#39;s also a regular front-facing camera for voice chats and selfies too.</p> <p>We expect it to run a very heavily modified version of Android similar to the Kindle Fire HDX and Fire TV.</p> <p>The Amazon smartphone is currently protected by a secure case to hide its design, but if it&#39;s put together as well as its Fire HDX tablet counterparts, we&#39;ll be happy.</p> <p>Interestingly, Amazon is reportedly working on two smartphones - the more powerful of which is expected to launch in the US in the summer. The lower cost device (which we assume won&#39;t share the power and 3D screen), will then be released at a later time.</p> <p>That&#39;s all the information available for the time being, but we&#39;ll be sure to update you with more news as soon as we get it.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/amazon/amazon-phone-coming-glasses-free-3d-screen/news" target="_blank">Amazon phone coming &ndash; with glasses-free 3D screen</a></strong></p> <p> </p><p p><iframe frameborder="0" height="180" src="http://pages.haymarket.com/stuff_signup/enews_embed" width="300"></iframe></p> <p> </p><p p>[<a href="http://bgr.com/2014/04/15/amazon-smartphone-photos-specs-kindle-phone-exclusive/" target="_blank">BGR</a>]</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="870" height="653" title="What lies beneath?" alt="This is the Amazon smartphone: it has six cameras and a 3D screen" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/amazon-phone-2.jpg?1398271419" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/amazon/amazon-smartphone-it-has-six-cameras-and-3d-screen/news" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/sg/amazon/amazon-smartphone-it-has-six-cameras-and-3d-screen/news#comments Amazon Smartphones Tue, 15 Apr 2014 17:19:20 +0000 Hafizah Osman 1435524 at http://www.stuff.tv Amazon phone coming – with glasses-free 3D screen http://www.stuff.tv/sg/amazon/amazon-phone-coming-glasses-free-3d-screen/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Tipsters claim the retailer is aiming for a September release date for its first smartphone </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Amazon phone coming – with glasses-free 3D screen" alt="Amazon phone coming – with glasses-free 3D screen" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/Amazon-Logo.jpg?1397526003" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>Amazon is releasing a smartphone with a 3D display &ndash; at least that&rsquo;s if you believe a bunch of tattle-tales who leaked the information to the Wall Street Journal.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/sg/users/sam-kieldsen" title="View user profile.">Sam Kieldsen</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Retina-reading technology </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>We know that glasses-free technology is feasible (the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/nintendo/nintendo-3ds/review">Nintendo 3DS</a> features such a screen), but Amazon could be taking it a step further: its smartphone will reportedly use four front-facing cameras to track the viewer&rsquo;s retinas and thus create on-screen images that have a hologram-esque effect.</p> <p>The sources &ndash; most likely developers who have been shown a prototype device during briefings in Seattle and San Francisco &ndash; claim that Amazon will announce the phone in late June ahead of a late September on-sale date. Yes, we&rsquo;re talking about the same OnLive service that totally failed as a business and <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/facebook/fully-charged-onlive-returns-new-form-ee-supercharging-londoners-4g-and-transformers-4-gets">had to pivot to an entirely different form of functionality</a> in order to survive.</p> <p>Amazon&rsquo;s box, say the sources, will offer &ldquo;top tier&rdquo; titles streamed from remote servers (i.e. not from a box in your house) and rendered at 30fps. That&rsquo;s pretty much what OnLive offered before succumbing to the costs of running the huge quantities of servers required. Amazon, of course, has plenty more money and could absorb a greater cost while getting its game streaming service established.</p> <p>While such a system would likely cost Amazon a lot of cash, it could be a valuable loss leader as it&rsquo;d be something no other set-top box (such as the Apple TV, Roku and Chromecast) can offer. So we can definitely believe that it&rsquo;s a possibility. We&rsquo;ll be keeping our eyes and ear peeled for more rumblings on this in the near future.</p> <p>[Via <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2014/03/17/amazon-set-top-box-game-streaming/">TechCrunch</a>]</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="OnLive" alt="OnLive" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/onlive_1.jpg?1395136435" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/amazon/amazon-set-top-box-tiny-chromecast-and-offering-game-streaming/news" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/sg/amazon/amazon-set-top-box-tiny-chromecast-and-offering-game-streaming/news#comments Amazon Games consoles Streaming Tue, 18 Mar 2014 01:24:31 +0000 Erna Mahyuni 1433849 at http://www.stuff.tv Is Amazon about to take on Apple TV with its own set-top box? http://www.stuff.tv/sg/amazon/amazon-about-take-apple-tv-its-own-set-top-box/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Report claims the company may be launching its web TV streaming device as early as March </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Is Amazon about to take on Apple TV with its own set-top box?" alt="Is Amazon about to take on Apple TV with its own set-top box?" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/jeff-bezos-kindles.jpg?1393038236" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>Amazon is poised to launch a set-top box to compete with the likes of the Apple TV and Google Chromecast, according to a report. </p><p>Citing &ldquo;industry sources&rdquo;, Re/code claims that Amazon&rsquo;s box will run on Android (most likely a forked version of the OS, as on the Kindle Fire tablet) and allow users to stream Amazon&rsquo;s web video content on their TVs (Amazon owns Lovefilm, which presumably means Lovefilm Instant&rsquo;s library would be on tap if the box were launched in the UK).</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/sg/users/sam-kieldsen" title="View user profile.">Sam Kieldsen</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> A games console too? </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>It may also be compatible with games. Perhaps that&rsquo;s because data collection is now so commonplace and ubiquitous that it&rsquo;s entirely unremarkable. After all, Sony&rsquo;s PlayStation was recently shown to log any Blu-ray discs watched on the unit, and online practically anything you sign up to tracks your every move, building up a virtual network of your activity and preferences.</p> <p>The tin-hat lobby would have you believe this is the foundation of a rapidly approaching Minority Report-style future, but with computers rather than psychics able to peer into your mind. You&rsquo;ll turn a corner and a billboard will angrily protest that you ate the &ldquo;wrong&rdquo; breakfast cereal, while the next will scream at you to make sure you grab [your favourite chocolate bar] before you go home. A third will urge you to download the new limited-release album by [your favourite artist], preferably before you get the chance to question why anything digital should be limited at all.</p> <p>Reality is a far cry from the movies, though, largely because it&rsquo;s rather more banal and comparatively shambolic. In the world of data collection, it&rsquo;s easy to be angered by privacy breaches, but I&rsquo;m increasingly frustrated by ad- and product-targeting that has all the focus, direction and finesse of a paralytic darts player armed with a bazooka. Then come flagged posts for Xbox and Samsung smartphones, which rather more murmur &ldquo;bloke in his 30s &mdash; might like tech and games&rdquo; than proudly bellow &ldquo;here are your fine-tuned and entirely personalised adverts, sir&rdquo;.</p> <p>Even sites supposed to be better than this often aren&rsquo;t. I recently bought an electric toothbrush on Amazon (I know &mdash; my crazy journo lifestyle is just so rock &rsquo;n&rsquo; roll!), and now every time I visit, the site is busy trying to sell me more toothbrushes. I know you can specifically tell Amazon to not use certain purchases for recommendations, but I shouldn&rsquo;t have to. I just bought a toothbrush! I only have one mouth! I am not aiming to open up a toothbrush store of my own! I don&rsquo;t need another!</p> <p>I suppose asking for a little intelligence in the systems that track us is currently a bit much to ask, and it marks them out as only very slightly evolved from the kind of garbage injected into your eyes during television commercial breaks. Maybe this will change in the future, as systems become more powerful and start making better connections. For now, though, it seems rather pointless for the LGs, Sonys, Facebooks and Amazons of this world to keep swallowing down data when they regurgitate recommendations that have barely more accuracy than a horoscope.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="&quot;Designed to help advertisers show people adverts they find interesting and relevant&quot;" alt="Facebook ads" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/facebook.jpg?1385428944" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="“Please buy more toothbrushes!”" alt="Amazon toothbrushes" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/toothbrushes.jpg?1385428944" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/amazon/if-you-want-breach-people-s-privacy-least-offer-relevant-recommendations-and-ads/news" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/sg/amazon/if-you-want-breach-people-s-privacy-least-offer-relevant-recommendations-and-ads/news#comments Amazon Facebook LG Mon, 25 Nov 2013 17:34:14 +0000 Elissa Loi 1429427 at http://www.stuff.tv Kindle Fire HDX http://www.stuff.tv/sg/amazon/kindle-fire-hdx/review <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Amazon&#039;s Kindle Fire HDX 7in combines a luscious screen with quad-core power and a price that&#039;ll keep your wallet happy </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Kindle Fire HDX review" alt="Kindle Fire HDX review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/amazon-kindle-fire-lockscreen-2.JPG?1386408077" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/sg/users/sophie-charara" title="View user profile.">Sophie Charara</a> </div> </div> </div> <p>Android can be a scary place.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s why Amazon&rsquo;s Kindle Fire range of tablets has been such a huge success - And the HDX does have a bit more personality to its design.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Kindle Fire HDX review" alt="Kindle Fire HDX review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/amazon-kindle-fire-hdx-design-back.JPG?1386408077" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Kindle Fire HDX review" alt="Kindle Fire HDX review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/amazon-kindle-fire-hdx-review-build-button.JPG?1386408077" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Kindle Fire HDX review" alt="Kindle Fire HDX review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/amazon-kindle-fire-hdx-review-with-case.JPG?1386408077" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="1200" height="900" title="Kindle Fire HDX review" alt="Kindle Fire HDX review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/amazon-kindle-fire-hdx-review-case-button.JPG?1386408077" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Screen: Eye-popping with a hint of blue </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Amazon might not offer the same amount of eye-widening app treats as the full Google Play store but everything looks just as exciting on the Fire HDX&#39;s screen as it does on the stock Android champ, the Google Nexus 7, the PPI of which it matches with 323 pixels per inch. </p><p>It&#39;s no surprise that Amazon prioritises picture quality, because that&#39;s what Kindle tablets are all about: watching stuff. From HD Lovefilm streams of <em>Looper</em> to hi-res images loaded onto the HDX, everything looks clear and clean from every angle. Skintones look natural and vivid colours dazzle in the best possible way.</p> <p>The Full HD screen on the HDX is gorgeous, then, with one small niggle: white webpages can nudge towards the creamier end of the spectrum and when using apps or browsing pages with a white background, you occasionally encounter a blue tint, especially in the corners. It&#39;s minimal, barely noticeable when watching movies, but once you spot it you won&#39;t be able to stop your eyes travelling back to it. If films are your bag, clap your hands over your ears and pretend you never heard us say anything about the HDX&#39;s slightly blue LED tendency.</p> <p>Dual stereo speakers with Dolby Digital Plus audio sound nice and punchy, too, and the placement at the top of the HDX&#39;s back mean you&#39;re unlikely to accidentally cover one up. Even the virtual 5.1 surround sound does a decent job - we actually paused a Netflix stream to check if some background jazz was coming from the tab or another room.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Kindle Fire HDX review" alt="Kindle Fire HDX review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/amazon-kindle-fire-hdx-lockscreen-1.JPG?1386408077" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Kindle Fire HDX review" alt="Kindle Fire HDX review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/amazon-kindle-fire-hdx-review-movies-storage.JPG?1386408077" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Performance: Blazes, naturally </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>People buy Kindle Fire tablets because they don&#39;t want to get lost in the Google Play woods, not for the latest specs. But with the HDX, Amazon&#39;s gone for high-end processing power in the form of a 2.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chip, Adreno 330 graphics and 2GB of RAM. The <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/android/google-nexus-7-2013/review" target="_blank">Nexus 7</a>, by comparison, is &#39;only &#39; running on a 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro. </p><p>What does that mean? They&#39;ve chucked everything at the HDX and Fire 3.0 runs beautifully as a result. It&#39;s amazing that a tablet as reliably fast and capable as this new Kindle Fire is going for just &pound;200 &ndash; Amazon&#39;s really stepped up the performance and it makes the difference in the little bits of navigation around the OS. Some of the stores, such as Games, can stutter when scrolling through choices, but apps download quickly thanks to dual-band Wi-F, while streaming is spot-on.</p> <p>So it&#39;s a bit of a beast, but it&#39;s worth mentioning that you might not be able to download the exact Android games (or versions) that you&rsquo;re after, since Amazon controls what goes on its App Store with a fervour that makes even Apple look pretty chilled out. If gaming on your slate is a high priority you&rsquo;re probably still better off with a <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/android/google-nexus-7-2013/review">Nexus 7</a>.</p> <p>There&#39;s still no rear camera on the 7in Kindle Fire tab (unlike the 8.9incher, which has an 8MP cam), but we wouldn&rsquo;t consider that a deal-breaker for most tableteers. Skype&#39;s present and correct on the Kindle store and there&#39;s a decent HD front-facer with a camera app for selfies. It&#39;s not as good as the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/apple/apple-ipad-mini/review" target="_blank">iPad Mini</a> in poorly lit living rooms but it does the job.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Kindle Fire HDX review" alt="Kindle Fire HDX review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/amazon-kindle-fire-review-multi-tasking.JPG?1386408077" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Amazon Kindle Fire HDX tech specs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Operating System - Fire 3.0 Mojito (based on Android 4.2.2) </p><p>Processor - 2.2GHz Snapdragon 800</p> <p>RAM - 2GB</p> <p>Screen - 7in LCD with 1920x1200 resolution (323ppi)</p> <p>Camera - front-facing HD camera (unspecified MP)</p> <p>Storage - 16/32/64GB (not expandable)</p> <p>Connectivity - Dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS,&nbsp;optional 3G/4G</p> <p>Battery - undisclosed&nbsp;</p> <p>Dimensions - 186 x 128 x 9mm</p> <p>Weight - 303g (Wi-Fi only), 313g (3G/4G)</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> OS and apps: Flaming Mojito </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>We&rsquo;ve already touched on this, but just to be clear: Amazon tablets do run on Android, just not as we know it. The latest Fire OS 3.0 &lsquo;Mojito&rsquo;, on the HDX, is based on Jelly Bean, but as usual it&rsquo;s more than just a skin of widgets, settings menus and useless pre-installed apps.&nbsp; </p><p>There&rsquo;s no access to the regular Google Play stores. Instead, your options are Shop, Games, Apps, Books, Music, Videos, Newsstand, Audiobooks, etc. With the extra pixels, Amazon&rsquo;s now able to display most of the menu options on one screen, which is great if you want to bypass the Amazon stores to head to the Silk browser, gorgeous scrolling photo gallery and Docs.&nbsp;</p> <p>But you won&rsquo;t want to as Amazon does a superb job of presenting what&rsquo;s on the device, what you already own in the cloud and what&rsquo;s available to buy from the stores. The only piece of the puzzle that&rsquo;s missing is movie downloads - it&rsquo;s frustrating with a Wi-Fi only tablets that all those Lovefilm movies can only be streamed. You can load your own HD movies, via microUSB from your computer, but we&rsquo;d like the option to quickly download a flick before a flight, for instance.&nbsp;</p> <p>The same amazingly useful carousel of recently used apps returns but is now joined by a grid of installed apps, available if you swipe upwards from the main homescreen. It&rsquo;s a neat touch that makes accessing any app - not just the one you used yesterday - very quick. In portrait, Amazon uses mini app icons under the huge ones to suggest similar apps - calendar under email and newer versions of <em>Angry Birds</em> under the game you&rsquo;ve already got, for example. Sure, its intention is to get you downloading and spending more, but it can be a time-saver too.&nbsp;</p> <p>Swipe down from the top of the screen and there&rsquo;s a quick access menu to auto-rotate, a brightness slider, Wi-Fi settings, a &lsquo;Quiet Time&rsquo; notifications killer and the new Mayday button. Compared to what&rsquo;s classed as customer service elsewhere, this is pretty special. Twelve seconds after we pressed the quick access button and hit &lsquo;Connect&rsquo; a lovely Scottish gentleman was giving us advice on using the HDX &ndash; Amazon staff pop up as a video call window and can see and manipulate what&rsquo;s on your screen - they can&rsquo;t see you, thank heavens. Resist the urge to ask them to deliver you pizza - they&rsquo;re real human beings, kids.&nbsp;</p> <p>It&rsquo;s 24/7 and must be costing Amazon a fortune but we&rsquo;ve been testing the HDX since it went on sale and response time has been excellent.</p> <p><strong>Check out our Kindle Fire HDX&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/amazon/kindle-fire-hdx/gallery?viewid=103963" target="_blank">picture gallery</a></strong></p> <p>Universal search includes libraries, stores and the web. Elsewhere, the Silk browser - which didn&rsquo;t exactly live up to its name in the past - now absolutely flies, with fast, responsive browsing. Amazon&rsquo;s Cloud Drive for storing photos from iPhones, Android phones, Facebook and the like is easy to use, too, and although it doesn&rsquo;t offer anything particularly new, we can see plenty of HDX users jumping on board with this. For managing files in the cloud, we still prefer Google&rsquo;s comprehensive Drive and opening, editing and sharing documents on the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/android/google-nexus-7-2013/review">Nexus 7</a> is an absolute dream with Google&rsquo;s apps front and centre.&nbsp;</p> <p>What lets the HDX down is its limited access to the Google Play store and its increasing number of quality tablet apps, essentials and fantastic games. Protecting your users from the dross is one thing, (and you can sideload apps the naughty way if you&rsquo;re particularly committed) but it would be nice if Amazon would let through more of the quality content, and in a timelier fashion.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Kindle Fire HDX review" alt="Kindle Fire HDX review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/amazon-kindle-fire-hdx-review-apps-close.JPG?1386408077" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Kindle Fire HDX review" alt="Kindle Fire HDX review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/amazon-kindle-fire-hdx-review-apps-screen.JPG?1386408077" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Kindle Fire HDX review" alt="Kindle Fire HDX review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/amazon-kindle-fire-hdx-review-email.JPG?1386408077" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="1200" height="900" title="Kindle Fire HDX review" alt="Kindle Fire HDX review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/amazon-kindle-fire-hdx-review-photos-2.JPG?1386408077" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Keep those tykes at bay </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Kindle FreeTime is a feature that&#39;s present in both models of the Kindle Fire HDX, and it extends parental controls beyond the usual pins and passwords.</p> <p>Parents can select all of the content they want their children to see, and the small blighters can&#39;t change anything in the FreeTime settings without a password. As long as standing at the cutting edge of new apps isn&rsquo;t a big priority the HDX &nbsp;has you well and truly covered, from browsing to cloud storage to buying books, music and magazines. Bringing a new, pepped up Fire OS, zinging along on a Snapdragon 800 and with a crisp, dazzling screen, this 7in Kindle Fire is even up there with the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-ipad-mini/review" target="_blank">iPad Mini</a> for the best hardware we&rsquo;ve seen on a small tablet. </p><p>It&rsquo;s the friendliest, most iOS-like version of Android we&rsquo;ve seen, too. But for us, despite the cool points from the HDX&rsquo;s build, the sensible 64GB option and the genius Mayday button, <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/android/google-nexus-7-2013/review">Google&rsquo;s Nexus 7</a> remains our top small slate. Amazon offers a huge variety of download treats, but without the smartphone hardware, app ecosystem and spit and polish of iOS or the openness and customisability of the Nexus, it&rsquo;s still got a little bit of work to do. That&#39;s why it earns a spot in our list of the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/tablets/top-ten">best tablets money can buy</a>, below Google&#39;s finest.&nbsp;</p> <p>But in a world that already includes the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/android/google-nexus-7-2013/review">Nexus 7 </a>and iPad Mini it takes something special to standout, and the Kindle Fire HDX certainly does that.
