But Alienware is pressing on undeterred: the Alpha runs Windows, but with a heavily modified UI that boots you straight into Steam&rsquo;s Big Picture Mode. The interface we saw (and, regrettably, weren&rsquo;t allowed to take pictures of) was very simple, very controller-friendly and very console-like. It&rsquo;s a simple case of switch on and start playing.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/half-life-3/valve-headquarters-coolest-office-world/feature">Valve headquarters is the coolest office in the world</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Hardware </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>While almost every other Steam Machine is just a gaming PC running Steam OS, the Alpha has some custom hardware to set it apart. The graphics, however, are pushed by a custom-built GPU based on Nvidia&rsquo;s new Maxwell architecture. A console you can add more power to? Interesting.</p> <p>Because the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/valve/valves-steam-controller-delayed-2015/news">Steam Controller is delayed</a>, the Alpha comes with an Xbox 360 controller. We played a number of different indie games, which Alienware tells us the Alpha is strongly aimed towards, and on the indies the experience was indistinguishable from another console. More surprising was the preview of <em>Dying Light</em>, which was obviously running at fairly high settings but didn&rsquo;t seem to be giving the Alpha any trouble at all. If you go for a specced-up Core i7 version, it looks like the Alpha will live up to Alienware&rsquo;s claims of running new triple-A titles in 1080p at high framerates.</p> <p>At a busy E3 booth it&rsquo;s hard to say just how quiet the Alpha is; we couldn&rsquo;t hear anything, but in your living room the experience may well differ.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s worth noting that if you&rsquo;re already a PC gamer, the Alpha supports Steam&rsquo;s in-home streaming, so if your monster PC is already running a pair of Titans, you can get the lowest-spec version and still use all the high-res texture packs in your PC-based purview.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/alienware/alienware-x51-2014/review">Alienware X51 (2014) review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Alienware Alpha" alt="Alienware Alpha" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/alienware-alpha-1_0.jpg?1402969615" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Price and availability </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Alienware told us the Alpha will be released in &lsquo;the holidays this year&rsquo;, which means in time for Christmas. The graphically intensive <em>Metro: Last Light</em> hit a maximum 180 frames per second in default settings, which basically means it&rsquo;s very, very good.</p> <p>Pop it open and its vast 17in screen dominates your view. It&rsquo;s a shame that it&rsquo;s only 1080p, but most gamers don&rsquo;t go beyond that on their desktops. It&rsquo;s hardly portable, either: perch it on your lap for more than an hour and even your thighs start to ache. Gaming performance is better than most ‘proper’ PCs and it’s twice as fast as the majority of gaming laptops released just a year ago. The only flies in the ointment are the fact that it’s too heavy and power inefficient to be considered genuinely portable, and that you could buy a full gaming rig and an Ultrabook for the same price. Still, if you don’t have the room for a big rig, the M17x is an excellent, compact alternative.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-review-rating"><legend>Review Rating</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 0 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-verdict"> <div class="field-label">Verdict:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>True desktop performance in an almost portable size.
