That means no more uncomfortable chest straps while you&#39;re out pounding the pavement on your lunchtime runs.</p> <p>Strapped on, the Gear 2 is light and unobtrusive, as any good watch should be, and the strap should accommodate most wrists without any problems. But while the metal construction of the Gear 2 is solid, the plastic strap is noticeably creaky in quiet environments. It can be swapped it out for any standard 20mm watch strap, though.</p> <p>The Gear 2 is also IP67 rated, meaning it can survive temporary submersion in up to 1m of water for thirty minutes. Most importantly that means it won&rsquo;t cost you &pound;250 when you wash the sleep from your eyes during your morning shower and realize you&rsquo;re still wearing your watch.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/gear-2/samsung-gear-2-vs-pebble-steel-weigh/feature" target="_blank">Samsung Gear 2 vs Pebble Steel: the weigh-in</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Charging cradle pins and hear rate sensor" alt="Samsung Gear 2 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Gear-2-Smartwatch-Build-13_0.JPG?1397748945" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="The plastic strap is a little creaky, but you can swap it out for any standard strap of your choice" alt="Samsung Gear 2 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Gear-2-Smartwatch-Build-9.JPG?1397748945" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Display of affection </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Gear 2 retains its predecessor&#39;s 1.63in 320x320 AMOLED display and text and icons are sharp and easy to read.</p> <p>While it guzzles more power than the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/pebble/pebble-steel/review" target="_blank">Pebble&#39;s</a> E Ink screen, we definitely prefer its rich colours and sharp text to the Pebble&#39;s pixellated monochrome alternative (even it does have a certain retro charm all of its own).</p> <p>It&#39;s slathered in Gorilla Glass 3, too, so accidental knocks and scrapes shouldn&rsquo;t pose much of a problem.</p> <p>We&rsquo;ve been using the Gear 2 with the display brightness set to low levels without any problems, and there&rsquo;s an outdoor mode that cranks the brightness up for a short period if you&rsquo;re struggling to make out what&rsquo;s on the screen.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The 1.63in 320x320 AMOLED is unchanged" alt="Samsung Gear 2 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Samsung-Galaxy-Gear-2-Screen-1.JPG?1397748945" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Outdoor Mode temporarily raises the brightness if you&#039;re struggling to see the screen outside" alt="Samsung Gear 2 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Samsung-Galaxy-Gear-2-Screen.JPG?1397748945" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Set up and charging </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The majority of wearable devices are largely useless if they&rsquo;re not paired to a smartphone, and the Gear 2 is no exception. Boo.</p> <p>Setting up the Gear 2 itself is simple enough. You&rsquo;ll need to download the Gear Manager app from the Samsung app store, and we recommend choosing the more traditional manual Bluetooth pairing method as opposed to the trickier NFC pairing option that requires the attachment of a cradle.</p> <p>That&rsquo;s right: The dreaded cradle is back.</p> <p>The original Gear shipped with a hideously huge charging cradle that we dubbed Big Bertha.</p> <p>Thankfully, Bertha&rsquo;s hit Weight Watchers and dropped quite a few dress sizes, and she&rsquo;s much easier to clip on and off.</p> <p>We&rsquo;d still prefer an in-built microUSB port, though, as you&rsquo;ll be stuck for power if you&rsquo;re out and about without the charging cradle.&nbsp;Still, the Gear does look cleaner without any ports, and we can see why Samsung&rsquo;s stuck to its guns from a design point of view.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-s5/samsung-galaxy-s5/review" target="_blank">Samsung Galaxy S5&nbsp;review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The charging cradle is back, but it&#039;s slimmer than before" alt="Samsung Gear 2 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Samsung-Galaxy-Gear-2-Smartwatch-Charger.JPG?1397748945" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> A frustrating time </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>You&rsquo;ll be glad to hear that the Gear 2 tells the time. The bad news is that it doesn&rsquo;t always work. Too often we found ourselves having to adjust the position of the Gear 2 slightly and take multiple measurements.</p> <p>We&#39;d recommend strapping the Gear 2 a little tighter to your wrist before logging a workout to ensure that it has sufficient contact with your skin to measure your heart rate.</p> <p>The Gear 2 also doubles up as a pedometer and it works as well as any wrist-based step tracker we&#39;ve used. But as is the case with its peers, it&#39;s not perfect. We got into our car with zero steps on the clock and after a 15-minute drive, the Gear 2 registered 17 steps.</p> <p>Of course wrist movements and false steps plague all fitness bands, and in the grand scheme of things, a few hundred false step counts aren&rsquo;t going to make much difference in the ten thousand or so we all take each day.</p> <p>The Gear 2 naturally integrates all of this exercise, step and heart rate data into Samsung&#39;s own S Health app, which lets you analyse your stats in addition to logging calories on your connected device.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/tomtom/tomtom-multi-sport-cardio-hands-review/feature" target="_blank">TomTom Multi-Sport Cardio hands-on</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Keep calm and keep training" alt="Samsung Gear 2 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Samsung-Galaxy-Gear-2-Smartwatch-App.JPG?1397748945" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="It&#039;s not going to count many steps lying down like that" alt="Samsung Gear 2 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Samsung-Galaxy-Gear-2-Smartwatch-Pedometer.JPG?1397748945" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-11"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> An acceptable camera, if you really need it </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Gear 2&#39;s camera won&#39;t be a priority for most users and we didn&#39;t find much use for it beyond impressing and/or repelling various people at the pub.</p> <p>Still, if you&#39;ve forked out the extra cash over the camera-less <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/gear-2-neo/samsung-gear-2-neo/review" target="_blank">Gear 2 Neo</a> then you probably won&#39;t be disappointed - yes, it&#39;s only 2MP. Impressive stuff.</p> <p>That&#39;s around three days of use if you baby the battery and two and a half to two days of fairly heavy use, and the constant connection didn&#39;t seem to affect the Note 3&#39;s battery levels at all.</p> <p>While its still not up there with the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/pebble/pebble-steel/review" target="_blank">Pebble&rsquo;s</a> endurance, we&#39;d pick three days and a higher resolution colour screen any day.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/pebble/pebble-steel/review" target="_blank">Pebble Steel review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The Gear 2&#039;s battery is good for about three days" alt="Samsung Gear 2 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Samsung-Galaxy-Gear-2-Smartwatch-Battery.JPG?1397748945" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-14"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Spot the apps </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>One area in which the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/pebble/pebble-steel/review" target="_blank">Pebble</a> does trounce the Gear 2 in is apps. One of our original complaints with the first Galaxy Gear device was its lack of apps, and the Gear 2 has even fewer.</p> <p>Naturally any new operating system faces this problem and we expect app numbers to rise once the Gear 2 has been out for some time, but it&#39;s still disappointing for those early buyers.</p> <p>There&#39;s a smattering of software and watchfaces currently available from the Samsung store, hardly any of which are worth actually downloading.</p> <p>Having said that, we recommend checking out <a href="http://www.mobilesrepublic.com/appygeek-en/" target="_blank">Appy Geek</a> if you do happen to pick up a Gear 2. There&#39;s functionality here that you will get use out of every day.</p> <p>But it&#39;s not without its faults. The auto screen-on sensitivity needs tweaking, the app store is lacking, and it only works with select Samsung devices. And it&rsquo;s &pound;250.</p> <p>And then of course, there&#39;s the looming shadow of&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/8-things-you-need-know-about-android-wear/feature" target="_blank">Android Wear</a>. Google-powered smartwatches like the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/meet-android-wear-googles-new-android-platform-wearable-devices/news" target="_blank">Moto 360</a>&nbsp;look stunning, and they promise to offer more functionality than the Gear 2 - or any other current smartwatch for that matter.</p> <p>Promising contextually useful information powered by Google Now (not to mention turn-by-turn navigation),&nbsp;Android Wear&nbsp;smartwatches look set to bring powers to your wrist that could prove truly useful.</p> <p>Buying a smartwatch like the Gear 2 now, just before the storm hits, echoes a time when people prematurely bought HD-ready TVs just before 1080p became widespread. Our advice? Wait just a little while longer to avoid buyer&#39;s remorse later on.</p> <p>Still, if you&#39;re a die-hard Samsung fan who wants the excellent screen and notification features of the Gear 2 <em>right now</em>, you won&#39;t be disappointed. The slightly curved face is more elegant than that of the original, the buttons are satisfyingly clicky and the whole thing feels comfortable and well built.&nbsp; The overall impression is of a premium device, like something you could wear to the office even if you don&#39;t work in a design agency. In short, like a real watch.</p> <p>The Gear 2 is similarly revamped from last year&#39;s <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-gear/samsung-galaxy-gear/review" target="_blank">Galaxy Gear</a>, and like the Pebble Steel it&#39;s gone metal. No, not in a new fondness for studded denim and strong cider, but in an all-metal face available in a range of colours including, um, gold. The design is much sleeker than last year&#39;s model, with no unsightly screws and no protruding bulge on the strap for the camera. Speaking of straps, the rubber one it ships with is perfectly pleasant but the fact it can take any standard 20mm watch strap gives you complete control over its looks. That said, whatever strap you stick on it, it&#39;s still obvious that it&#39;s a smartwatch.</p> <p><strong>Winner:</strong> Pebble Steel</p> <p><strong>UPDATE:</strong> <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/pebble/pebble-steel/review">Read our in-depth Pebble Steel review here&nbsp;</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Pebble Steel" alt="Which smartphone? Which, admittedly, is less of a pro here in the gloomy old UK. And while it may only have 24,000 pixels, that&#39;s fine for displaying digits, watchfaces and notifications. The Steel&#39;s screen is unchanged from that on the original Pebble, but it is now encased behind near-unbreakable - and waterproof - Gorilla glass. There&#39;s also a new three-colour LED for notifications.</p> <p>There&#39;s no E Ink on the Gear 2 - instead, as is usually the case with Samsung, it&#39;s AMOLED all the way. The 1.63in, 320x320 display won&#39;t win any awards for sharpness, but it&#39;s perfectly good at this size and, being a proper screen, can do things E Ink can&#39;t - such as display colour photos. The other big difference is that unlike the Pebble Steel, it&#39;s a touchscreen. Even so, we&#39;re a little disappointed that you can only install a maximum of eight apps, especially given that each watchface counts as one. Battery life on the original Pebble disappointed us slightly too, managing around three days&#39; intensive use - though with a bit of care it did last for the promised 5-7. We&#39;d imagine the Steel would fare about the same.</p> <p>In smartwatch terms, the Gear 2 is as powerful as they come. It runs on a dual-core 1GHz processor, has 512MB of RAM and even has 4GB of storage space. That means there&#39;s plenty of space for music, photos and apps, and plenty of power to do things with them. The 300mAh battery is slightly smaller than the one in the Galaxy Gear and has more work to do than the Pebble, so the promised three days&#39; of juice is likely to be optimistic. But then again, most phones struggle to survive for one day.</p> <p><strong>Winner:</strong> Samsung Gear 2</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> App Abilities </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The number of Pebble apps is growing all the time thanks to the opening of the Pebble Appstore on iOS last month. There&#39;s a good mix of free and paid-for apps too, and with the store due to open on Android soon, we can only see things getting better. It&#39;s slick in use, with a simple four-button setup that makes operation child&#39;s play.</p> <p>One of the biggest changes between the Galaxy Gear and Gear 2 is that Samsung&#39;s ditched Android in favour of its own Tizen OS. That&#39;s fine by us, because we found using the original Gear to be a bit of a pain. From what we&#39;ve seen so far, Tizen works much more slickly, but the downside is that its app selection will be limited, at least at first. Samsung says it will launch with around 100 apps and is encouraging developers to make more. What&#39;s on offer? The usual mix of watchfaces, fitness trackers and notification apps. Just fewer of them than on Pebble.</p> <p><strong>Winner:</strong> Pebble Steel</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Pebble Steel vs Gear 2" alt="Which smartphone? But perhaps more handy still is the heart rate sensor. This keeps an eye on your pulse while you&#39;re wearing it and will work with the Samsung S Health activity tracking app. The Gear 2 also acts as a digital music player (you&#39;ll need a pair of Bluetooth headphones, natch), although you won&#39;t be able to cram all that many albums on to its 4GB of storage and, like its predecessor, will draw in notifications from a phone &ndash; as long as it&#39;s a Samsung Galaxy phone, that is. You can even make calls on it, meaning you can finally live out those Dick Tracy fantasies.</p> <p>The Pebble Steel isn&#39;t really big on features. And that&#39;s fine, really &ndash; it&#39;s designed to be a companion to your phone and not a standalone device.&nbsp; So what do you get? Well, it can display notifications of all kinds - texts, emails, incoming calls, calendar entries and social networking updates among them. It can also control a variety of devices via Bluetooth, including music players - handy if your phone&#39;s in your pocket - Hue lights, Sonos and more. Plus you can view maps and transport info on it.&nbsp; All the same, the feature-packed Gear 2 has it soundly beaten in this round.</p> <p><strong>Winner:</strong> Samsung Gear 2</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/smart-watches-dont-need-be-smartphones/feature" target="_blank">There&#39;s nothing smart about a watch that&#39;s also a phone</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Samsung Gear 2 and Galaxy S5" alt="Which smartwatch? Crucially, the Steel also has better app support (at least at the time of writing) and this nudges it slightly ahead of its rival &ndash; at least until we&#39;ve reviewed the two models properly.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/gear-2/mwc-2014/samsung-gear-2-and-gear-2-neo-hands-review/feature" target="_blank">Samsung Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo hands-on reviews</a></strong></p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/pebble/ces-2014/pebble-steel-hands-worlds-best-smartwatch-just-got-smarter/news" target="_blank">Pebble Steel hands-on</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/gear-2/samsung-gear-2-vs-pebble-steel-weigh/feature" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/gear-2/samsung-gear-2-vs-pebble-steel-weigh/feature#comments Gear 2 Pebble Samsung Smartwatches Wearable tech Tue, 04 Mar 2014 21:32:13 +0000 Marc McLaren 1433238 at http://www.stuff.tv Video: Samsung Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo hands-on review http://www.stuff.tv/gear-2/mwc-2014/video-samsung-gear-2-and-gear-2-neo-hands-video-review/video <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Samsung takes another stab at the wearables market with two almost identical smartwatches </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Video: Samsung Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo hands-on video review" alt="Video: Samsung Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo hands-on video review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/Screen%20Shot%202014-03-01%20at%2016.21.20.png?1393734373" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper brightcove-player-wrapper"> <script language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript" src="http://admin.brightcove.com/js/BrightcoveExperiences.js"></script> <script src="http://admin.brightcove.com/js/APIModules_all.js"></script> <div class="brightcove-player"> <object id="myExperience-3275802208001" class="BrightcoveExperience"> <param name="bgcolor" value="#000000" /> <param name="playerID" value="" /> <param name="playerKey" value="AQ~~,AAAAEgPmGlk~,Fzd-TvXcznw-P3piHaryQBMeIzWITldz" /> <param name="isVid" value="true" /> <param name="isUI" value="true" /> <param name="dynamicStreaming" value="true" /> <param name="@videoPlayer" value="3275802208001" /> <param name="autoStart" value="" /> <param name="htmlFallback" value="true" /> <param name="includeAPI" value="true" /> <param name="templateLoadHandler" value="brightcoveTemplateLoaded" /> <param name="width" value="640px" /> <param name="height" value="360px" /> </object> <!-- This script tag will cause the Brightcove Players defined above it to be created as soon as the line is read by the browser. A full test of the battery life will have to wait until we can get our hands on a review sample, but that aside, the new Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo smartwatches have addressed most of the original Gear&#39;s design flaws.</p> <p>They&#39;re sleeker, sexier and a lot more wearable. For smart devices, that&#39;s the most important issue to address, and Samsung has done that rather well.</p> <p>They&#39;re also more useful than the original Gear as they can play music without your smartphone - no more carrying your phablet around while you run. As long as the Gear 2 matches Samsung&#39;s claimed battery life, we&#39;ll be happy. </p> <p>Of course, we&#39;d be happier if they played nice with all Android devices, rather than just Samsung&#39;s own smartphones, but we can&#39;t see that happening anytime soon.</p> <p>We&#39;re looking forward to putting the Gear 2 through its paces, so stay tuned for Stuff&#39;s full review.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="MWC 2014: Samsung Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo hands-on review" alt="MWC 2014: Samsung Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo hands-on review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN9999_1.JPG?1394189343" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-carousel-item"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-text field-field-carousel-item-title"> <div class="field-label">Carousel item title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Samsung Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo hands-on </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/gear-2/mwc-2014/samsung-gear-2-and-gear-2-neo-hands-review/feature" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/gear-2/mwc-2014/samsung-gear-2-and-gear-2-neo-hands-review/feature#comments Gear 2 Gear 2 Neo MWC 2014 Samsung Smartwatches Wearable tech Mon, 24 Feb 2014 19:05:34 +0000 Esat Dedezade 1432804 at http://www.stuff.tv Samsung unveils Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo one day before MWC 2014 kicks off http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-gear/mwc-2014/samsung-unveils-galaxy-gear-2-and-gear-2-neo-one-day-mwc-2014-kicks/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> UPDATED 23/02/14: What’s that? Users will also be able to track their steps and develop custom fitness routines to help melt away those pesky calories, with a real-time fitness coach.&nbsp;</p> <p>Sadly there doesn’t appear to a be a micro USB port for charging, which means we’re probably looking at another bulky charging cradle. You can also use the Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo as a music controller for your smartphone.</p> <p>Speaking of which, both Gear 2 models will play nicely with more than a dozen Samsung phones via low-powered Bluetooth 4.0. There’s no word on support for non-Samsung devices, but we’re not counting on that happening anytime soon.</p> <p>The new models retain the original Gear’s 1.63in 320x320 AMOLED display and 512MB of RAM, though they’ve got a bump in the processor department with a dual-core 1GHz chip as opposed to the original’s 800MHz offering.</p> <p>Sadly there's still no in-built GPS, so you'll need to drag your smartphone along on your runs if you want to track your route. Both models are IP67 water and dust-resistant though, so they'll happily survive inevitable downpours.</p> <p>The 300mAh battery is also a smidgen smaller than the one found in the original Gear, which had a 315mAh battery.
