How? By swapping its Android operating system for Tizen, Samsung&rsquo;s homegrown OS used by the Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/sam-kieldsen" title="View user profile.">Sam Kieldsen</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Tizen coming to the Galaxy Gear means it&rsquo;ll get a bunch of new features and functions. There&rsquo;s also a standalone music player that allows you to store tracks directly on the Galaxy Gear, while a double-tap shortcut can now be set to take you directly to any app you like (previously it was just to the volume and brightness controls).</p> <p>The Tizen update will also allow a heavier degree of customisation, with font styles, home screen icon size and wallpaper all tweakable. In fact, the update will bring almost all the features from the Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo to the Galaxy Gear &ndash; WatchOn Remote and the heart rate monitor seem like the only ones it&rsquo;ll lack.</p> <p>There&rsquo;s no word yet on when Samsung will begin rolling out the update, but we&rsquo;ll keep you updated.</p> <p>[Via <a href="http://www.sammobile.com/2014/05/14/exclusive-samsung-galaxy-gear-tizen-preview/">SamMobile</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/samsung-tizen-phone-and-android-wear-smartwatch-coming-year/news">Samsung: Tizen smartphone and Android Wear smartwatch coming this year</a></strong></p> <p><iframe frameborder="0" height="180" src="http://pages.haymarket.com/stuff_signup/enews_embed" width="300"></iframe></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/f9zplGtH-wA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-gear/original-samsung-galaxy-gear-smartwatch-get-tizen-upgrade/news" target="_blank">read more</a></p> Galaxy Gear Samsung Wearable tech Thu, 15 May 2014 13:48:26 +0000 Sam Kieldsen 1437266 at http://www.stuff.tv Here's why Apple can't make a solar powered iWatch http://www.stuff.tv/apple/could-apple-make-solar-powered-smartwatch/feature <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Newspapers slavered at the thought of a sun-charged iWatch last week, but is solar science really up to wearables&#039; demands yet? </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Apple iWatch concept (render by Martin Hajek, www.martinhajek.com)" alt="Apple iWatch concept (render by Martin Hajek, www.martinhajek.com)" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/apple-iwatch-render-01.jpg?1392651680" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>The rumour mill went wild last week, after the <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2014/02/03/technology/building-a-better-battery.html?_r=0" target="_blank">New York Times</a> reported that Apple is investigating wireless charging technology for its much-anticipated smartwatch.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/adamoxford" title="View user profile.">Adam Oxford</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Here comes the sun </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Certain well known international news sites whose names may or may not rhyme with Male-y Fail confused the NYT&#39;s measured reporting that Apple had shelved solar plans (although it did advertise for solar engineers recently) with speculation that the sun-loving silicon Sekonda is ready to wear.</p> <p>Sadly, this is very unlikely. And here&#39;s why.</p> <p>Let&#39;s take the most basic smartwatch around at the moment: the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/pebble-smartwatch/review" target="_blank">Pebble</a>. Thanks to <a href="http://ifixit.org/blog/4360/pebble-teardown" target="_blank">iFixit</a>, we know that it has a 3.7V battery which is rated for 130mAh. Multiplying those two numbers together, it gives us a fully charged capacity of 0.48Wh. The Pebble&#39;s low-power ARM Cortex-M3 processor, made by STMicro, consumes 32microWatts per MHz of clockspeed, and its maximum clockspeed is believed to be 80MHz (according to the official spec sheet) &ndash; but since that can also clock down to almost nothing most of the time it doesn&#39;t tell us much and besides, the battery in the Pebble lasts about five days and also powers an e-ink screen and the Bluetooth transciever.</p> <p>Since we know that the Pebble lasts for about five days on a single charge (or 120 hours-ish), napkin maths tells us that it thus consumes, on average, somewhere in the region of 0.004W. Which doesn&#39;t sound like much, does it? Commercially available, cheap <a href="http://www.communica.co.za/Catalog/Details/P2514121334" target="_blank">solar cells</a> that are roughly the size of a wristwatch strap can produce 0.08W, which would be more than enough to power the Pebble entirely and keep the battery at full charge. Sure, that&#39;s under perfect sunny conditions rather than being buried under a shirt sleeve in an indoor office under artificial light, but at least it would extend the battery life, right?</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-iwatch-could-feature-solar-charging-motion-charging-and-wireless-charging/news" target="_blank">Apple experimenting with solar charging screen for iWatch</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/J7do9ZnKqPY" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Pebble Smartwatch" alt="Pebble Smartwatch" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/pebble-smartwatch_5.jpg?1392651680" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Leaving Pebbles on the shore </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The problem, however, is the Pebble is a really bad analogy when it comes to a prospective iWatch &ndash; unless Apple really has let its ambitions slide. When you look at something more likely to be a competitor to an iWatch, the figures stop making much sense.</p> <p>&ldquo;I don&#39;t think you could use the Pebble as a benchmark for power requirements,&rdquo; says South African technologist, Toby Kurien, &ldquo;Rather look to the Galaxy Gear for that. If I&#39;m not mistaken, that&#39;s around a 315mAh battery, probably running at 3.7V. That equates to around 1.2Wh. So you&#39;d need a panel capable of around 0.4W to be able to charge your watch in about three hours or so.&rdquo;</p> <p>A quick reminder &ndash; 0.4W is still five times more power than a watch strap sized cell running at maximum efficiency. According to Kurien it&#39;s likely that a top end panel would produce twice that amount of power under optimal conditions, but that would still take eight hours of direct sunlight to charge the iWatch.</p> <p>&ldquo; It is feasible if the idea is that your watch is constantly charging from sun and/or interior lighting and you&#39;re not expecting a full charge,&rdquo; says Kurien, &ldquo;though my feeling is that it&#39;s still unlikely given practical considerations, and how it affects cost and aesthetics.&rdquo;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="604" height="453" title="Samsung Galaxy Gear" alt="Samsung Galaxy Gear" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-gear.JPG?1392651680" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> But… But… APPLE! </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Just one more thing. We all know how Apple likes to pull something unexpected out of the bag that was previously considered impossible within such a time frame and cost envelope. Like a multi-touch mobile screen, or an implausibly sophisticated thumbprint reader. Surely there&#39;s some magic it can do with sun-powered tech?</p> <p>There&#39;s one place that would surely know the answer to this &ndash; outside of Apple&#39;s secretive R&amp;D section, of course &ndash; would be the <a href="http://www.cser.org.uk/" target="_blank">Centre for Solar Energy Research</a> at Glyndŵr University in Wales. If there&#39;s a transparent PV panel that can generate more power per square millimetre than existing technology just around the corner, they might &ndash; just might &ndash; have got wind of it.</p> <p>So naturally we asked, and Senior Research Lecturer Dr Vincent Barrioz was happy to look at our numbers. &ldquo;Never say never, but the figures you are quoting [for battery size] appear to be unlikely for fully charging such batteries,&rdquo; Barrioz said, &ldquo; It may be able to top-charge the battery, but considering that the PV panel would be inserted within the size of the smartwatch and transparent (ie. converting only photons from the UV and/or infrared range), I am not aware of that technology being currently available or close to market.</p> <p>&ldquo; If it is, I would certainly be interested to know more about it.&rdquo;</p> <p>[Apple iWatch concept designs by <a href="http://www.martinhajek.com" target="_blank">Martin Hajek</a> and <a href="http://toddham.com/blog/iwatch-concept/" target="_blank">Todd Hamilton</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/5-things-we-want-apple-iwatch/news" target="_blank">5 things we want from the Apple iWatch</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Apple iWatch concept (render by Todd Hamilton, www.toddham.com)" alt="Apple iWatch concept (render by Todd Hamilton, www.toddham.com)" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-iwatch-concept.jpg?1392651680" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/could-apple-make-solar-powered-smartwatch/feature" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/apple/could-apple-make-solar-powered-smartwatch/feature#comments Apple Galaxy Gear iWatch Pebble Samsung Wearable tech Mon, 17 Feb 2014 09:33:58 +0000 Stephen Graves 1432384 at http://www.stuff.tv Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 set for a flexible display? http://www.stuff.tv/android/samsung-galaxy-gear-2-set-flexible-display/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> A bendable OLED screen could be the upcoming smart watch’s killer feature </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="604" height="453" title="Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 set for a flexible display?" alt="Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 set for a flexible display?" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/samsung%20galaxy%20gear.JPG?1390873636" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>The second edition of the Samsung Galaxy Gear will have a flexible OLED screen, according to one report.</p> <p>An &ldquo;industry source&rdquo; told ZDNet Korea that Samsung is determined to revamp its smart watch, changing &ldquo;all the parts that looked dull or boring&rdquo;. Only one button (for power) graces the clutter-free chassis, and we’re rather taken by the four corner screws that have been left visible.</p> <p>Its 1.63in 320x320 Super AMOLED display won’t win any resolution contests with its 278ppi figure, but it's more than sharp enough for a watch. You might notice that text and icons aren't quite as sharp as you're used to (especially if you’re lucky enough to have been spoiled by the multitude of superb 1080p smartphones now available), but given that the Gear is meant to act as a secondary screen, we don’t think that’s a problem.&nbsp;</p> <p>The strap is rubber with a metal clasp, and it’s easily adjustable before clicking securely into place. It also houses the 1.9MP camera that’s present as a fairly inconspicuous bump on our review model, with the black circular lens blending in with the black strap.</p> <p>It'll stand out a lot more on the more vibrant straps, though, and you'll probably fool one or two observant commuters into believing that you're an M16 agent. Or a technological Peeping Tom.</p> <p>There's a multitude of colour options available, ranging from orange to gold, but you can't mix and match straps to match your wardrobe, presumably due to the strap's built-in camera module.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper brightcove-player-wrapper"> <script language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript" src="http://admin.brightcove.com/js/BrightcoveExperiences.js"></script> <script src="http://admin.brightcove.com/js/APIModules_all.js"></script> <div class="brightcove-player"> <object id="myExperience-2744459803001" class="BrightcoveExperience"> <param name="bgcolor" value="#000000" /> <param name="playerID" value="" /> <param name="playerKey" value="AQ~~,AAAAEgPmGlk~,Fzd-TvXcznw-P3piHaryQBMeIzWITldz" /> <param name="isVid" value="true" /> <param name="isUI" value="true" /> <param name="dynamicStreaming" value="true" /> <param name="@videoPlayer" value="2744459803001" /> <param name="autoStart" value="" /> <param name="htmlFallback" value="true" /> <param name="includeAPI" value="true" /> <param name="templateLoadHandler" value="brightcoveTemplateLoaded" /> <param name="width" value="640px" /> <param name="height" value="360px" /> </object> <!-- This script tag will cause the Brightcove Players defined above it to be created as soon as the line is read by the browser. First off, as with most smartwatches, the Gear needs to be connected to a smartphone if you want it to be, well, smart.</p> <p>The problem is that right now the Galaxy Note 3 is the only smartphone that's compatible with the Gear. Samsung’s working to rectify that with an update to the Galaxy S4 by the end of October, plus similar updates for the S3 and Note 2 promised by the end of year, but for now it’s Note 3 or bust.</p> <p>Once you fire the Gear up for the first time you're met with very basic on-screen instructions that tell you to encase it in a very unattractive, bulky plastic case that clips around the watch face. <br />The plastic case/cradle (or the Gear's ugly sister, Big Bertha as we've taken to calling it) houses an NFC module, and is required if you want to automate the Bluetooth pairing of the Gear to your smartphone via NFC, making for a speedier first connection – at least in theory.</p> <p>In reality, it's a very clunky method, and doesn't exactly form the first impression expected from a supposedly cutting edge piece of 2013 tech. By the time you clip the case on and faff around with the Gear's strap to ensure a decent back-to-back connection with your smartphone, you'll realise that it's a lot easier just to pair up with Bluetooth devices the old fashioned way, with a quick passcode confirmation.</p> <p>Once it's connected your phone will automatically download and install the Gear app, which can be accessed at any time from the phone's notification menu. The app let's you easily manage your Gear by changing its theme, installing apps and managing notifications.</p> <p>Once you've done all that then you can put Big Bertha to rest and never have to worry about seeing her ugly plastic mug again.</p> <p>Oh wait, no you can't. </p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Gear comes with bulky plastic case" alt="Gear comes with bulky plastic case" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN3203.JPG?1396863882" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Gear comes with bulky plastic case" alt="Gear comes with bulky plastic case" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN3206.JPG?1396863882" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Samsung Galaxy Gear Review" alt="Samsung Galaxy Gear Review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN3205.JPG?1396863882" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Charging </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>If you’re assuming there’s a microUSB ingeniously hidden underneath a flap on the Gear’s body, you’re sadly mistaken. That's a welcome relief, as we remember experiencing lag and slowdown with Gear sample units at IFA.</p> <p>Usability-wise, the Gear takes a little getting used to. Swiping down from the main watch screen opens up the camera, while swiping down in any open app/menu acts like a back button.</p> <p>Swiping up from the main screen brings up the dialler, and we wish we could customise this to bring the music controls up instead as it’s a feature that’s likely to get much more use. You can at least customise the power button double-tap, which by default activates S Voice.</p> <p>A long-press of the power button brings up the power options as well as vibrate and outdoor mode options, the latter of which instantly cranks up the brightness for better visibility in sunlight. While these are useful, we think it's a big oversight for Samsung not to display the battery level in this menu.</p> <p>Swiping through the menus and apps is a bit of a pain, with multiple swipes and taps required to get anywhere, and that's what you have to do each time you want to check the battery level. <br />While you can rearrange the order of the menu icons from the Gear app, you can't do it on the Gear itself, which is another annoyance. A UI option to select a miniature icon grid will hopefully be included in a future update.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Gear works with Note 3" alt="Gear works with Note 3" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN3174.JPG?1396863882" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-13"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Battery life </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>On a night out with moderate use (constantly connected via Bluetooth, receiving notifications and taking a few photos), the Gear dropped to 63 per cent from a full charge after eight hours – much less than a normal watch, but respectable for a smart device.</p> <p>With heavier use you're likely to have to charge it overnight if you want it to last all day. That means we can only speculate on the performance of the device's second screen capabilities: S Voice, calendar, notifications and more were unavailable to us, as were more interesting apps such as Evernote and Tripit, as they require a data connection from a connected Galaxy Note 3 or S4.</p> <p>However, we got ample time to swipe through menus, grab photos and play back sneaky 10-second videos. The results were a mixed bag.</p> <p>The skinned Android OS is impressively intuitive to navigate. Waking the Gear with its power button and swiping sideways to navigate menus was mostly cleanly animated and seamless, but from time to time we encountered fairly catastrophic slow-down that resulted in desperate, pointless prods to get the thing going again. We put this down to early software, but it'll be interesting to see how performance is impacted upon when a companion device is in use.</p> <p>Surreptitious photos and videos were captured quickly and easily (swipe up and tap to shoot), and the 720p clips played back without a hitch. Meanwhile, S Health appeared also to work just fine without a connected phone, tracking our shuffles around the demo table - and it makes a whole lot more sense to wear a Gear on your wrist than a Note on your arm when you're out for a jog.</p> <p>The music controller app, one of the Gear's core functions, wasn't working for us either, but its interface is clear with just enough space to make sure you're not skipping when you mean to pause. Unfortunately, we couldn't tell you right now whether you'll encounter slowdown if you're trying to control your music while, say, counting your steps with S Health.</p> <p>Another element we couldn't test out was battery life, which Samsung claims to be up to 25 hours. Frankly, if it's much less than that, it's a bit of a fail for Samsung: recharging your watch every night could become quite a chore. Incidentally, although there are splash-proof charging contacts on the rear of the Gear's body, we didn't get to see the USB charger that connects to them.&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-gear-through-the-camera.jpg?1380011050" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-gear-music-controls.jpg?1380011050" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> How well does the Galaxy Gear work with smartphones? </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p dir="ltr">Good question. &nbsp;Although surrounded by Note 3s all packing the Gear Manager app, the Gears we tried refused to pair with them, so we couldn't test much of the functionality. All other Androids need not apply.</p> <p dir="ltr">If the Gear does what it says on paper, though, it could become extremely useful. GPS is the first, as without it, it'll never be a useful competitor to Garmin's training efforts or the Nike+ TomTom watch. If you want to navigate or use a route-tracking app such as RunKeeper, you'll need an S4 or Note 3 in your back pocket, which is a far less elegant solution.</p> <p>The second is NFC. Opening security doors and paying for cans of Coke with a tap of the wrist would have been both useful and cool. Our gut reaction is: perhaps. If it were smaller, sleeker and a little bit posher, we'd be more inclined to say yes. If it worked wth more Androids or even the iPhone, we'd seriously mull it over. And if we could see it seamlessly working with a smartphone like the adverts show, then we'd be more tempted still.</p> <p dir="ltr">The problem is, the Gear is confused about what it wants to be. It's a powerful and well-equipped device, which means its quite chunky, carries a big screen and has a relatively short battery life. And yet, its mostly hamstrung without a companion phone. We can't help but feel it'd be more successful if Samsung streamlined its functionality - maybe killed off the camera, focused on the really useful elements of its skillset and had it rely more on the device it's paired with to do the hard work so that it could be slimmer and longer-lasting. Also, it's not cheap. At US$300 (£190 or so) it's going to be a tough sell.</p> <p dir="ltr">On the other hand, the Gear is quite a feat of engineering, and it promises to do many cool things. Perhaps more importantly, it signifies that wearable tech has well and truly arrived, and we applaud Samsung for that.
