We also like how seriously light in the hand the 294g tab is - without feeling cheap or toy-like. And how it&rsquo;s still easier to hold one-handed than an iPad Mini thanks to the screen ratio.</p> <p>But what&rsquo;s really won us over is how sturdy the Tab S feels compared to the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/samsung-galaxy-tabpro-84/review">last few batches of Samsung tablets</a> - and smartphones - we&rsquo;ve tested. OK, it&rsquo;ll flex very slightly if you really go at it but the plastic build is nice and solid. It doesn&rsquo;t get close to the smooth, stable aluminium form of an iPad Mini but it&rsquo;s enough to really make a difference. Especially when you&rsquo;re paying &pound;320.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:</strong> <strong><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-ipad-mini-2-retina/review">The best-looking small tablet - iPad Mini with Retina display reviewed&nbsp;</a></strong></p> <p>In terms of looks, we&rsquo;re talking textbook Galaxy. Home button below the screen in portrait, in-between two brightly lit capacitive buttons. Fairly slim bezels. MicroSD card slot on the side. Samsung is still playing around with textures and trimmings, though - on our Dazzling White model there&rsquo;s a slightly slippy back panel and a faux-metal, rose gold band around the edge. It also comes in Titanium Bronze.</p> <p>The good news is that the fake stitching and faux leather have been banished to tablet design hell but, to be honest, Samsung needs to keep trying. It&rsquo;ll get there. For now, the Tab S is a skinny and sturdy slate that won&rsquo;t look cheap and nasty next to an iPad Mini.&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Dazzling white and rose gold looks better than it sounds " alt="Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 review " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Samsung-Galaxy-Tab-S-8.4-review-corner.png?1416416302" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 review " alt="Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 review " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Samsung-Galaxy-Tab-S-8.4-review-iPad-rear.png?1416416302" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 review " alt="Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 review " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Samsung-Galaxy-Tab-S-8.4-review-microUSB.png?1416416302" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="1200" height="900" title="Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 review " alt="Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 review " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Samsung-Galaxy-Tab-S-8.4-review-microSD.png?1416416302" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> What are those clicky circles on the back? </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Simple Clickers, silly.</p> <p>Now if you&rsquo;re not planning to attach any covers to your Tab S, you can ignore them. And by sharp we meant insanely sharp, like the TabPro before it, with extra detail on hi-res images and in full HD videos to make your jaw drop. The fact that it&#39;s a Super AMOLED panel also means that deep blacks are seriously impressive. And if you like your colours vibrant, you won&#39;t be disappointed.</p> <p>All that and it&rsquo;s both taller and wider than the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-ipad-mini-2-retina/review">iPad Mini with Retina display&rsquo;s</a> 7.9in screen in a very similar sized body. So is it better?</p> <p>After a lot of testing and squabbling, the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-ipad-mini-2-retina/review">iPad Mini</a> just edges ahead. Why? The Tab S 8.4 might display beautifully inky blacks but whites in apps, movies or webpage backgrounds have a bit of a blue tinge to them and don&rsquo;t look as pure and crisp as on the iPad. We got the best out of it when we manually chose a Super AMOLED setting to get eye-popping homescreens and Papergarden magazines then switched to Basic for movies. The iPad looks gorgeous with no alien colours or skintones no matter what you throw at it. If you plan to use it mainly for movies or gaming rather than browsing the web, though, you can&rsquo;t get better than the Tab S 8.4.</p> <p>Us? It&rsquo;s gorgeous, it&rsquo;s lively and, though Magazine UI isn&rsquo;t new - we&#39;ve seen it on a few other Samsung tabs - it&rsquo;s improving all the time,&nbsp;with a new briefing panel for calendar, bookmarks and alarms. You can&rsquo;t turn it off but it&rsquo;s easy to ignore.</p> <p>The Tab S series takes the concept of freebies to dizzy heights with Galaxy Gifts. 50GB of Dropbox for two years, free books via the Kindle app, a three-month Marvel Unlimited sub and plenty more. Non-essential Samsung apps are also (ironically) relegated to a Galaxy Essentials app too, so it&rsquo;s up to you what you download.</p> <p>Multi Window, which lets you view two apps splitscreen, is also present and correct, together with new tricks such as being able to swap the apps round and dragging and dropping text from one window to the other. This is a bit hit and miss but definitely a step in the right direction.</p> <p>Lastly, Papergarden is a nice treat too. Yet another reason the Tab S is so much nicer to live with than the TabPro - less charging.</p> <p>It charges quickly too and now as well as a regular power-saver mode, there&rsquo;s also Samsung&rsquo;s Ultra Power Saving mode. Well, it&rsquo;s lighter, easier to hold one-handed, has a bigger screen, offers more storage for less money and comes with tons of freebies.</p> <p>But for us the&nbsp;iPad Mini&nbsp;stays on top by a whisker for its unrivalled tablet design, absolutely flawless performance and wider selection of optimised tablet apps. Sure, the Tab S 8.4 is smaller than most Android tablets and both the Magazine UI and Papergarden help but the App Store is where you&rsquo;ll find the best apps for (slightly) bigger screens.&nbsp;</p> <p>Against other Android tabs, though, it&#39;s a winner. OK, so if a cheap price is your main requirement then the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/google-nexus-7-2013/review">Nexus 7</a> and <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/lg/lg-g-pad-83/review">LG G Pad 8.3</a> have you covered. The slick visuals and crescendoing engine roar give a sense of of the TTS&#39;s brutal speed at odds with the unhurried delivery of Löffler, who explains how Usain Bolt&rsquo;s taut legs inspired the TTS&rsquo;s design as he hammers it around the track. Looking around at him from the passenger seat, it&#39;s impressive how good he is at delivering a script at a hundred miles per hour.&nbsp; <p>The footage was filmed on five GoPros mounted on a custom frame wedged in the passenger seat (pointing forward, up, down and to both sides). The five feeds were resolved into a 60fps, 3000x1500 video stream that allows you to look every which way but backwards (look down, and you have no legs).</p> <p>There are limitations, of course. The video isn&#39;t 3D - for obvious reasons, you can&#39;t lean forward to get closer to the car&#39;s controls - and the lack of G forces as you accelerate and corner takes some&nbsp;of the drama out of the drive. But short of putting you in a simulator, or of actually being driven in the car, this is the closest you&rsquo;re going to get.</p> <p>Other Audi VR videos to watch include a look at the design sketches of the TTS, a 360-degree walk-around of the TT Coupe (the model you can drive away this month), and a comparison between the TT Roadster and the TTS (both coming next year). The drive is definitely the main event.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/samsung/samsung-galaxy-note-4/review">Samsung Galaxy Note 4 review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Will Findlater, looking sharp in a Samsung Gear VR" alt="I was driven in an Audi TTS… inside a Samsung Gear VR" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/audi-gear-vr-6.jpg?1416220956" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="The VR filming rig" alt="I was driven in an Audi TTS… inside a Samsung Gear VR" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/audi-tt-pro-vr-1.jpg?1416220956" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Jurgen Loffler, ready to proselytise" alt="I was driven in an Audi TTS… inside a Samsung Gear VR" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/audi-tt-pro-vr-2.jpg?1416220956" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> You’re going to want a Gear VR </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Gear VR itself performs incredibly well. The video didn&rsquo;t stutter in playback even when I moved my head quickly, and the phone&rsquo;s nine-axis sensor did an impressive job of picking up my orientation as I looked around the dashboard and the track ahead. <p>Coincidentally, earlier that very same day I&rsquo;d tried a headset from VRTX One that operates in the same way as the Gear VR, except with an LG G3 in place of a Samsung Galaxy Note 4. Viewed through lenses that fill your entire field of vision, it&rsquo;s clear that the G3 has the better screen for close-ups &ndash; the Note 4&rsquo;s pentile OLED looks comparatively pixellated &ndash; but isn&rsquo;t so good at the movement sensing, which is noticeably jerkier.</p> <p>The VRTX One headset I tried was still at prototype stage, though, and the G3 inside was running different footage (in case you&rsquo;re wondering, an amazing-looking augmented reality fantasy RPG that only appears when you&rsquo;re gazing at a particular QR code, some footage from the side of a Linkin Park gig and some NFL training), and may perform better with further optimised software.</p> <p>The Gear VR&rsquo;s ergonomics and controls are also impressive: a wheel between the lenses smoothly adjusts focus, while a responsive touch panel on the right-hand side of the headset navigates menus, and a back button on the left returns you to your previous screen. (The GameFace has no visible controls.) It&#39;s a really comfy thing to wear, though judging from the pictures, not something to try in public.</p> <p>It&#39;ll be interesting to see how the Gear VR copes with 3D games run off the Galaxy Note 4. If the experience is as smooth as it is with the TTS drive video, the Gear/Note combo will be hugely compelling.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/first-consumer-vr-headset-mobile-phones-built-lg-g3/news">The first VR headset for mobile phones is built for the LG G3</a></strong></p> <p>&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The Gear VR, side view" alt="I was driven in an Audi TTS… inside a Samsung Gear VR" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/audi-gear-vr-1.jpg?1416220956" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="The Gear VR, at the business end" alt="I was driven in an Audi TTS… inside a Samsung Gear VR" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/audi-gear-vr-2.jpg?1416220956" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="The Gear VR, at a wonky angle" alt="I was driven in an Audi TTS… inside a Samsung Gear VR" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/audi-gear-vr-7.jpg?1416220956" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Sold? </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>I&rsquo;d still recommend anyone in the market for a TT actually drive the car &ndash; after all, that&rsquo;s part of the fun &ndash; but if your dealership is in an area as manic as Piccadilly, I can understand taking the VR drive option. If you snap a photo of whiteboard or paper notes, it automatically detects the edges, compensates for any skewed angles, and converts text and diagrams into digitally editable versions.</p> <p>That means you can increase the size of written text and even change its colour. But that&rsquo;s not to say it&rsquo;s perfect, and it&rsquo;s certainly not the best smartphone around &ndash; in fact the S5 sits a fair old way down the chart when it comes to <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/smartphones/top-ten">our best-rated mobiles</a>.</p> <fieldset class="fieldgroup group-pricing"><legend>Pricing</legend><div class="field field-type-number-float field-field-test-price"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> £-1.00 </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-price-from"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 0 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="fieldgroup group-ratings"><legend>Ratings</legend><div class="field field-type-hcmreviewrating-rating field-field-overall-rating"> <div class="field-label">Overall rating:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="hcmrating-default"> stars</div> </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>Review Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Build: Very metal </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The world keeps wondering when Samsung will ditch polycarbonate (that&rsquo;s &ldquo;plastic&rdquo; to you and us) and join the likes of Apple, Sony and HTC in delivering a flagship phone with a slinky metal or glass body &ndash; and yet the company doesn&rsquo;t seem to take the hint.</p> <p>There&rsquo;s nothing wrong with plastic smartphones per se. Nokia&rsquo;s higher-end Lumia Windows Phones are plastic and quite glorious, as are the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/iphone-5c/review">iPhone 5c</a> and new <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/desire-eye/htc-desire-eye/review">HTC Desire Eye</a>, but the Galaxy S range has always fallen a little short of expected standards. That could and should change with the Galaxy S6.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-alpha/metal-last-samsung-galaxy-alpha-ditches-plastic/news">Metal at last: Samsung Galaxy Alpha ditches the plastic</a></strong></p> <p>Some sources have hinted at a &ldquo;more premium build&rdquo; for the S6, with Samsung going for an aluminium build, or even using super-advanced material graphene (which the company has <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/samsung/samsung-speeds-production-graphene-wonder-material/news">found a way to manufacture in greater quantities</a> than previously). While the latter would be a bold, memorable move, it&rsquo;d probably push the S6&rsquo;s manufacturing costs a little too high, and to be honest at this point we&rsquo;d be happy with metal rather than another year of uninspiring plastic.</p> <p>We&rsquo;d also expect to see some measure of dust and waterproofing. The S5 is sealed against the elements, and its successor is sure to follow. It might even kick things up a notch so you can take it even deeper &lsquo;neath the waves: bumping the spec to IP68 from the S5&rsquo;s IP67 rating would mean you could completely immerse the phone for a prolonged period of time without water getting inside. No more desperate bags of rice and crossed fingers if your phone tumbles into the bath or the bog.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="604" height="453" title="The Galaxy Alpha proves Samsung can do metal phones" alt="The Galaxy Alpha proves Samsung can do metal phones" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-alpha-01_2.jpg?1416582043" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The render above is a concept created by 3g.co.uk. We think the chances of a 2K screen making its way into the S6 are very high indeed, especially as the Note 4&#39;s 2K screen proves that Samsung&#39;s got the capability to churn them out.</p> <p>The screen will probably get a slight size bump too, but maybe not too much. It wouldn&#39;t want to compete with its Note 4 brother, after all.</p> <p>We&rsquo;d personally be more than happy with 2K and 5.2in &ndash; going any bigger risks making the phone too big for the hands of normal folks and going sharper strikes us as pixel overkill on a screen this size, especially as more pixels require more power and put more strain on the battery.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/g3/lg-g3/review">LG G3 review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Will Samsung match LG with a 2K screen? Both are quad-core, 64-bit and more powerful on paper than any smartphone processor at the time of writing, and we&rsquo;d be pretty happy to see either of them on the S6 (they seem likely to require more power than the S5&rsquo;s Snapdragon 801, however, which could put extra strain on the battery life &ndash; see below for more on that), especially if they were paired with at least 3GB of RAM.</p> <p>Samsung has form in launching its flagship phones with octo-core Exynos chipsets too, albeit not in the UK. While eight cores might sound twice as powerful as four, in reality it doesn&rsquo;t quite work like that: in benchmarks, the Exynos-equipped S5 only performs marginally better than the Snapdragon 801-equipped S5. We think Samsung can stick to a quad-core Snapdragon 808 or 810 and still offer the performance a phone like the S6 will require.</p> <p>We&rsquo;ll talk about storage here too. If it goes down the removeable backplate design route, Samsung is likely to support expandable storage via microSD, and thus the built-in storage doesn&rsquo;t need to be huge &ndash; let&rsquo;s say 32GB. If, however, the phone is has a metal unibody design and memory isn&rsquo;t user-increasable, we&rsquo;d like to see 64GB and maybe even 128GB as an option, just to keep pace with the Apple iPhone 6. And Samsung does like to be seen to be trying to keep up with Apple.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="We&#039;d love to see a powerhouse CPU like the Snapdragon 808 or 810" alt="We&#039;d love to see a powerhouse CPU like the Snapdragon 808 or 810" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/qualcomm-snapdragon_0.jpg?1416582043" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Battery: Bigger and better </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Galaxy S5 has a 2800mAh battery that matches up to the majority of its Android rivals by lasting around a day in normal use conditions (but not all: the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sony/sony-xperia-z3/review">Sony Xperia Z3</a> lasts at least half a day longer), and it holds an advantage over most too in that it&rsquo;s user replaceable. If Samsung decides to go with a seamless metal body that could change, and if it does we&rsquo;d like to see better battery life, either owing to a larger battery capacity or increased efficiency.</p> <p>The LG G3 has a 5.5in 2K screen and markedly longer battery life than the 5.1in, 1080p Galaxy S5, so it&rsquo;s certainly possible for Samsung to improve its power efficiency. Much of this will depend on the processor it chooses for the S6, and if that&rsquo;s the Snapdragon 808 or 810, neither seems likely to offer lower energy use than the S5&rsquo;s Snapdragon 805. So it could well be that a larger battery is required.</p> <p>Of course, Samsung may want to retain its user replaceable battery selling point, in which case it&rsquo;ll probably hint that those looking for more battery life could simply buy a second battery to carry around with them.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sony/sony-xperia-z3/review">Sony Xperia Z3 review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="The S5&#039;s battery is OK, but there&#039;s room for improvement" alt="The S5&#039;s battery is OK, but there&#039;s room for improvement" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-s5-battery_1.jpg?1416582043" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-6"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Camera: Better in low light, please </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Were we betting types, we&rsquo;d put a significant wedge on the S6&rsquo;s camera outstripping the S5&rsquo;s when it comes to megapixel count. The S5 has a 16MP sensor, and we&rsquo;d be surprised if the S6 doesn&rsquo;t take things above 20MP.</p> <p>But megapixels alone don&rsquo;t make a good photo, and we&rsquo;d much rather see some measures taken to boost performance in low light conditions: larger megapixels (Apple&rsquo;s favoured method), optical image stabilisation, a wider aperture, or a combination of those. Optical image stabilisation is a distinct possibility, we&rsquo;d say, as Samsung has already used it in the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/samsung/samsung-galaxy-note-4/review">Galaxy Note 4</a>.</p> <p>We&rsquo;re not personally much inclined to take selfies, but we hear a lot of &ldquo;the young people&rdquo; are, and Samsung may well attempt to entice them to the S6 with a higher resolution front-facing camera. Sony&rsquo;s new PlayStation TV, launching tomorrow in the UK, is essentially the cheap home console version of the PlayStation Vita handheld, albeit without compatibility for many of the Vita&rsquo;s best games. And the aftermarket DekaVita7 takes the PS TV, wraps a large plastic shell around it, and thus turns it back into a portable system. Wait, why?</p> <p>We can&rsquo;t answer that question. Sure, the DekaVita7 offers a larger display than the Vita - it has a 7in IPS LCD, whereas the Vita has just a 5in display - but it lacks touch interactions, is compatible with a small portion of the Vita game library, and scraps the relatively precise design of the Sony handheld in favor of a big slab of plastic.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s priced at nearly &pound;125 in Japan, where it&rsquo;ll apparently launch next spring. Here&rsquo;s what we love &ndash; and hate &ndash; from those tiny, life-improving, commute-saving apps.</p> <p><u>Six things we love</u></p> <p><strong>1 Simple design</strong><br />
Modern smartphones have acres of screen space available but that doesn&rsquo;t mean we want every square inch occupied by jiggling icons, menus and text. We want our apps at-a-glance.</p> <p><strong>2 Keep it fun</strong><br />Just because your app does something serious doesn&rsquo;t mean it has to be dull to use. Try Uniqlo&rsquo;s ace Wake Up app: an alarm clock whose mood changes depending on the weather, to see what we mean.</p> <p><strong>3 Feed us</strong><br />
Apps that keep our inner foodie munching are always welcome. Take Jamie Oliver&rsquo;s 20-Minute Meals app: 60 recipes including ingredients, pictures and over an hour of videos so you can see the magic in action.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><strong>4 Make shopping easy</strong><br />
Here&rsquo;s what we don&rsquo;t want: apps that make us work to spend our hard-earned cash. The Asos app is a model of how to do it right: every now and then it pings a notification to our screen telling us about a killer sale. From there to bagging a fashionable bargain takes a few taps and our enviable record of &ldquo;best-dressed&rdquo; is safe for another few weeks.</p> <p><strong>5 Make us think</strong><br />
Fine, occasionally we want to chill out with a game that requires nothing more than frantic tapping. But the brain is a muscle (sort of), so games that make us ponder, tinker and cogitate (look it up) are always best. Try the occasionally dastardly The Room to see what we mean.</p> <p><strong>6 Give us free stuff</strong><br />
Sure, make it easy to spend our money, but reward us as well. Take Starbucks&rsquo; ace app, for example: apart from feeling futuristic (pay for your chai with your mobile), every so often you&rsquo;ll be rewarded with a free drink.</p> <p><u>&hellip; and four things we really, really don&rsquo;t love</u></p> <p><strong>1 Loads of notifications</strong><br />
Some notifications we&rsquo;re cool with: save us some cash, point us at something cool, or let us know when our chums are doing something neat. Endless trilling, buzzing alerts? Count us out.</p> <p><strong>2 Cheap knock-offs</strong><br />
The attack of the clones is all-too-real in the world of apps: a killer app comes out and is closely followed by hopeful copycats, each hoping to dupe us into splashing out without doing anything new. Innovate, people!</p> <p><strong>3 Sneaky in-app purchases</strong><br />
Free apps are ace. Free apps that are unusable without in-app purchases less so. If your app depends on subsequent purchases to be usable, let us know up-front. Better yet, charge for the app: we don&rsquo;t mind paying for the good stuff.</p> <p><strong>4 Over-sharing</strong><br />
We&rsquo;re all for a bit of social networking but play it cool, yeah? We don&rsquo;t want our friends to know we&rsquo;re embarking on a weekend-long Buffy the Vampire Slayer marathon, so let us keep tabs on what&rsquo;s getting broadcast.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Read more - <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-note-4/promoted-how-run-startup-your-pocket/feature">Promoted: How to&hellip; It&rsquo;s not just about size: the resolution (2,560 x 1,440, fact-fans) means it&rsquo;s easy to read whether it&rsquo;s emails, social networking or reading PDFs. All that space is put to good use: the Galaxy Note 4&rsquo;s Multi Window multi-tasking means you can have lots of apps burning the midnight oil at once and you can see what&rsquo;s going on in each at a glance.</p> <p><strong>Locked-down</strong><br />Modern businesses need to be secure: your email account is a hotbed of precious information and competitive secrets. Of course, you already protect your phone with a PIN but the Galaxy Note 4 has an enhanced fingerprint scanner as well: that&rsquo;s a form of security you can&rsquo;t forget and won&rsquo;t absent-mindedly jot down or leave in your wallet. Android&rsquo;s device-level encryption and the Galaxy Note 4&rsquo;s new Private Mode means better security than ever.</p> <p><strong>Audio abilities</strong><br />Easy to forget but you&rsquo;ll need a phone that makes calls as well as everything else. The Galaxy Note 4 has a built-in voice recorder &ndash; and one with a few bells and whistles. You get an array of microphones for better clarity and the speakerphone has better noise-cancellation for improved sound quality, clearer calls and less chance of miscommunication.</p> <p><strong>All the time in the world</strong><br />You know the score with most smartphones: hit the late afternoon and you&rsquo;ll nervously watch your battery percentage drop. Picture the scene: a dream client drops you an email with an important offer only for your phone to croak its last as you tap &ldquo;Reply&rdquo;. The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 has a whopping battery for longer between charges, while Ultra Power Saving can squeeze up to 24 hours from the last 10%.</p> <p><strong>Business class</strong><br />First impressions matter: the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is only 8.5mm thin and that punchy screen is classier than flying first class to New York. The premium metal frame feels the business as well, so between looks, feel, long life and all the performance you could want, the Galaxy Note 4 is the complete package &ndash; more than we can say for a certain group of sharp-suited reality TV stars.</p> <p><strong>Multitasking master</strong><br />You haven&rsquo;t seen multitasking like this before. Sure, other phones can run more than one app at once, but the Note 4 takes things to another level. It&rsquo;s fast, fluid and smooth as it switches between apps, allowing you to go from the web browser to your email without suffering choppy performance. Give the multi-window mode a whirl and your mind will be properly blown: multiple windows, running concurrently, and all active at once. Think typing an email while you watch a video, or browsing the web while jotting down ideas. Finally: a phone whose mental horsepower matches your own.</p> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-note-4/promoted-11-tips-better-smartphone-photography/feature">Read more...
