It&rsquo;s comfortable to hold, being light (465g) and super-skinny (6.6mm). In short, it&#39;s the best looking, best-feeling tablet that Samsung has ever released, though it&#39;s still not quite at the farthest end of the premium table.</p> <p>By contrast, Apple&rsquo;s iPads have always felt absurdly solid, and the iPad Air 2 is a truly stunning piece of engineering. Thinner than its predecessor at just 6.1mm, two stacked are roughly as thick as the original iPad.</p> <p>Despite its slightly svelter nature, there&rsquo;s no sense of &lsquo;bendgate&rsquo; here, and the metal-made tablet clocks in a few grams under Samsung&rsquo;s, at 437g. It&rsquo;s a 10.5-inch 2560x1600 Super AMOLED affair that&rsquo;s crisp and sharp at 288ppi - good luck hunting for pixels - with great vivid colours and excellent viewing angles. If the colour saturation threatens to set your retinas alight, you can dial it down a bit too, which is handy.</p> <p>Usefully, the white balance can automatically adjust to take into account your local lighting conditions. However, the display&rsquo;s aspect ratio&rsquo;s widescreen nature might not be everyone&#39;s cup of tea, even if it is great for movies.</p> <p>The iPad Air 2 at a glance is identical to the original &mdash; a 9.7-inch 2048x1536 screen at 264ppi, which was no slouch on the original model. However, Apple&rsquo;s made improvements, bonding the LCD, glass and touch sensor, eliminating the air gap entirely. This not only makes the tablet a touch thinner, but makes the screen more vibrant; there&rsquo;s also a new coating to reduce reflections. The aspect ratio is also better suited to a wider range of tasks, even if it&rsquo;s sub-optimal for movies (in that you get black bars).</p> <p>The whites on the iPad are a little purer, and the colours are also slightly more realistic.</p> <p><em><strong>Winner: Draw. New Share sheets, iCloud Drive, and TouchID all combine to make for a potentially great future for iPad users, but developers must capitalise on them first. (Apple naturally promises the bugs from iOS 8.0 have been squashed.)</p> <p>By contrast, Samsung&rsquo;s tablet runs Android 4.4.2 with TouchWiz welded to it. In use, it feels more complex than iOS, but it also has some excellent features that iPad owners covet, such as multi-user mode and multi-window, rumoured to be on the way for the iPad as well, but yet to appear.</p> <p>Despite Samsung&#39;s welcome efforts to tone down its TouchWiz skin with a flatter, cleaner look, iOS 8 is still the more attractive OS.</p> <p><em><strong>Winner: Draw</strong></em></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="800" height="600" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/os.jpg?1413793495" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Features: fingerprints and gigabytes </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Apple needs a serious kicking when it comes to storage, ditching the 32 GB model to &lsquo;encourage&rsquo; people to plump for 64 GB, while 16GB and 128GB are the other options. Samsung only offers you 16GB or 32GB, but you can shove in a micro SD card up to a massive 128GB to expand your storage. Hurrah!</p> <p>Elsewhere, both devices offer fingerprint-scanners, with the iPad Air 2 getting the TouchID system introduced with last year&rsquo;s iPhone. This might seem like a gimmick, but when the tech is adopted by enough apps, it becomes second-nature to use it for unlocking password managers and journalling apps, or to confirm purchases. It&#39;s also far better than the Tab S&#39; fingerprint scanner, which requires an actual swipe as opposed to a simple tap.</p> <p>But the storage thing (and bang per buck thereof) wins it for Samsung.</p> <p><em><strong>Winner: Samsung Galaxy Tab S</strong></em></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="800" height="600" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/features.jpg?1413793495" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Performance: wind them up and watch them go </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Apple&rsquo;s been typically tight-lipped regarding the specs of its new iPad, merely noting it&rsquo;s the most powerful iPad ever. Boasting a new custom A8X processor, graphs during the recent Apple event showed it blazing ahead of the iPad Air, which already performed admirably. In terms of battery life, you get up to ten hours in normal usage.</p> <p>Samsung&rsquo;s not so coy, happily banging on about its Exynos 5 Octa 5420, running at 1.9GHz. It&rsquo;s hugely powerful and backed with 3 GB of RAM. Apple&rsquo;s iPad is rumoured to have 2 GB, up from the 1 GB in previous models. Battery life is a smidge under Apple&rsquo;s, at nine hours.</p> <p>But it&rsquo;s not all about numbers, and in real-world use, new iPads with the latest iOS have always felt buttery smooth, whereas Android devices with higher specs have frequently comparatively suffered, and even Samsung&rsquo;s mighty tablet is prone to stutters and lag. Whether it&rsquo;s high-quality apps or hardware add-ons, Apple users are spoilt for choice, but the pickings are slimmer on Android. This is especially the case when it comes to apps specifically optimised for tablet use.</p> <p>For the typical user, this will be less of a problem, but then they&rsquo;ll be mucking about with a Tesco Hudl rather than a high-end Samsung. But until we see high-end, tailored music, reading, design and writing apps on Android in similar numbers to iOS, even the Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5 isn&rsquo;t going to be enough to win here.</p> <p><em><strong>Winner: iPad Air 2 </strong></em></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="800" height="600" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/eco.jpg?1413793495" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-7"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Verdict: walking on Air </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Since day one, the bigger iPad has been a remarkably solid piece of kit, only once slipping into compromise territory with the iPad 3. The Note 4&rsquo;s screen is a mighty 5.7in on the diagonal. That&rsquo;s 0.2in bigger than our current superphone recommendation, the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/g3/lg-g3/review">LG G3</a>, and Apple&rsquo;s giant new iPhone, but in terms of actual handset size and ergonomics, it&rsquo;s somewhere in the middle of the two.</p> <p>The <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/g3/lg-g3/review">LG</a> is a lovely bit of smartphone engineering, and is more compact and comfortable to hold than the new Note 4. The <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-iphone-6l/review">iPhone 6 Plus</a>, on the other hand, seems even bigger than it needs to be and doesn&rsquo;t sit in the hand as well. The flatter sides of the Note 4 combine with a new softer, less tacky faux leather back panel to make the Note 4 pretty comfortable and easy to grip, and while there are still a few lumps and bumps around the camera, headphone jack and microUSB port, the metal band around the entire edge of the device makes the Note 4 feel impressively sturdy and even a bit, premium. And that&rsquo;s not a word we often use to describe Samsung phones.</p> <p>At 176g it&rsquo;s lighter than it looks, too. Don&rsquo;t misunderstand: this is still very much a two-handed phone and if you&rsquo;re used to regular-sized phones (whatever that means these days) you&rsquo;ll be more conscious of the Note 4 in your hand, pocket or against your ear.</p> <p>Aside from the front of the phone, though, which still looks like every Samsung smartphone ever made and the fact that waterproofing is missing here, the Note series design is definitely on the right track.</p> <p>There are more beautiful smartphones out there - the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/htc/htc-one-2/review">HTC One M8</a>, the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sony/sony-xperia-z3/review">Sony Xperia Z3</a> - but you don&rsquo;t buy a Note 4 to show off design details. You buy one to show off what it can do.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-s5/samsung-galaxy-s5/review" target="_blank">Samsung Galaxy S5 review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsunggalaxynote4homescreen.png?1413614417" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="4000" height="3000" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN5383.JPG?1413614417" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="4000" height="3000" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN5385.JPG?1413614417" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="4000" height="3000" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN5390.JPG?1413614417" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> A screen that will stun your retinas </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>One thing Samsung smartphones have always been able to do is stun your retinas into submission with AMOLED colours and plenty of pixels. And the Note 4 takes this heritage next gen with an LG-matching 2560 x 1440 display, making this the first 2K screen we&rsquo;ve seen from Samsung.</p> <p>Plenty of Samsung family traits are in evidence: it&rsquo;s seriously bright (you&rsquo;ll keep the slider way below halfway if you don&rsquo;t want your phone to give you a suntan) and it uses the same Adaptive Display technology found in the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/samsung-galaxy-tab-s-84/review">Galaxy Tab S</a> range, which means that it automatically adjusts its colours according to the warmness and brightness of ambient light.</p> <p>Download a hi-res image and, side by side with a lesser pixelled phone such as the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-iphone-6l/review">iPhone 6 Plus</a>, it&rsquo;s like you&rsquo;re looking at two different pictures. There&rsquo;s bags more detail and so there should be when the Note 4 is 515ppi. And that&rsquo;s not all. Blacks are lovely and inky thanks to the AMOLED display&rsquo;s ability to turn off pixels to render black. And colours are eye catching if not accurate - still slightly on the warmer, saturated side but if you want to tweak this manually, head for the AMOLED cinema and Basic settings.</p> <p>Whether this is the perfect screen for you depends on your habits. Homescreens and games look gorgeous but emails, browsing and ebooks do show up that usual AMOLED problem of contrast. Whites just aren&rsquo;t as pure as we&rsquo;d like next to the brilliant<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-iphone-6l/review"> iPhone 6 Plus</a>, and it gets worse when you tilt the Note 4 to the side - stream a black and white movie to see the difference instantly. Likewise, if the 16Mp cam and big screen appeals to photography fans, bear in mind that colours are also not as natural as the iPhone or LG.&nbsp;</p> <p>Still, this is a leap to 2K done very, very right and if you were a fan of Samsung screens before, all those extra pixels will be a welcome treat. As we saw with the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/find-7/oppo-find-7/review">Oppo Find 7</a> and the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/g3/lg-g3/review">LG G3</a>, sky high resolutions often arrive with a dip in battery life. Not so on the Note 4.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/smartphones/top-ten">The 10 best smartphones in the world right now</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1600" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-note-4-review-screen_4.jpg?1413614417" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="4000" height="3000" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN5427.JPG?1413614417" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="4000" height="3000" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/note4vsnote3.JPG?1413614417" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> The best battery life of the 2K smartphones </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>In fact, not only is this the best battery life of any 2K smartphone we&rsquo;ve tested, it&rsquo;s even slightly better than the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-note-3/samsung-galaxy-note-3/review">non-2K Note 3</a>. Well, we&rsquo;ll be damned.</p> <p>The removable 3220mAh battery is just a smidgen bigger than the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-note-3/samsung-galaxy-note-3/review">Note 3&rsquo;s unit</a> and Samsung claim a lot of the extra efficiency is down to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor, something Sony also pointed to when explaining the Z3&rsquo;s insane stamina.</p> <p>In the week we&rsquo;ve spent with the Note 4, ending the day with 10-20% still left in the tank has become the norm, with only those days that we&rsquo;ve specifically hammered it with gaming and photography for testing purposes killing it quicker. It also lasted just over 11 hours in our HD video rundown test (Wi-Fi on, half brightness) which is an hour and a half longer than the LG G3.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s no Z3-style battery freak and it won&rsquo;t last quite as long as an <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-iphone-6l/review">iPhone 6 Plus</a>, but compared to the overwhelming majority of smartphones it&rsquo;s still a distance runner. And the battery is swappable. And there&rsquo;s a low power Ultra Power Saving mode that&rsquo;s handy in emergencies (or festivals as we found with the Galaxy S5). And it has fast charging, with the supplied charger, of up to 50% in 30 minutes. You get the idea.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: </strong><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/gear-vr/samsung-gear-vr/review">Samsung Gear VR hands-on review</a> </p> <p>&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="4000" height="3000" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN5434.JPG?1413614417" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="4000" height="3000" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN5443.JPG?1413614417" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Samsung Galaxy Note 4 tech specs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Screen: 5.7in 2560 x 1440 Super AMOLED (515ppi)<br />Processor: 2.7GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 805<br />RAM: 3GB RAM<br />OS: Android 4.4 KitKat<br />Camera: 16MP rear with OIS, 4K video, 3.7MP f/1.9 front<br />Storage: 32GB (up to 128GB microSD)<br />Battery: 3220mAh<br />Connectivity: Wi-Fi, 3G/4G, NFC, Bluetooth 4.1, IR,<br />Dimensions: 153.5 x 78.6 x 8.5mm<br />Weight: 176g</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> A real benchmark beater </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Qualcomm&rsquo;s latest silicon saves the day, then. Qualcomm&#39;s new chip is beefy enough, in fact, to turn the Note 4 into an Oculus Rift-like VR headset, when slotted into the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/gear-vr/samsung-gear-vr/review">Gear VR</a>. Impressive stuff.&nbsp;</p> <p>In day to day use the Note 4 tears through Android games and demolishes its rivals in benchmarks such as AnTuTu, where it scores a huge 45111 - higher than any other flagship. Happily, Samsung&rsquo;s TouchWiz skin is getting more and more fluid with every software update, so the experience is as smooth as you&rsquo;ll get on a Galaxy. Smoother doesn&rsquo;t mean perfect - there are still a few more stutters than you&rsquo;d find on an <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/htc/htc-one-2/review">HTC One (M8)</a> or the almost pure Android<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/moto-x-2014/review"> Moto X.</a> Samsung has done a good job of tightening things up but there&rsquo;s still a little bit of work to do.&nbsp;</p> <p>One small but frustrating characteristic of Samsung phones is that while there&rsquo;s a teensy bit of lag to be found when you&rsquo;re getting things done, they can also jump about opening apps you didn&rsquo;t intend to. That&rsquo;s a combination of a few issues - the slightly sticky out home button, the easy to catch capacitive buttons and the bigger size leading to more finger slips. It&rsquo;s happened to us on every single Samsung phone we&rsquo;ve tested and the Note 4 is no exception. It&rsquo;s a little niggle but it bears mention.&nbsp;</p> <p>Back to the good news. The basic model is &pound;630 but it does at least come with 32GB of built-in storage and is upgradeable by up to 128GB with an SD card, too. Consider that a 128GB <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-iphone-6l/review">iPhone 6 Plus</a> would set you back the best part of &pound;800, a Note 4 with a 128GB microSD card starts to look pretty good value at a little under &pound;700.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> The S Pen is better than ever </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>There are a couple of other ways the Note 4 offers better value than the average phablet, and those are also things that mean it simply makes more sense as a big phone. One of those ways is the built-in S Pen and the other is software features such as Multi Window.</p> <p>Both are iterations on the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-note-3/samsung-galaxy-note-3/review">excellent Note 3</a>, but both have been improved this time around.</p> <p>The S Pen, which still hides in the lower right-hand corner of the smartphone, is still a bit cheap-feeling and spindly, but the fact that it&rsquo;s always there makes a much bigger part of your regular smartphone week than, say, a third party stylus and an <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-iphone-6l/review">iPhone 6 Plus</a>. </p> <p>This time it&rsquo;s twice as pressure sensitive, which makes a noticeable difference when sketching - the pressure, speed and tilt of the S Pen now all affect the thickness and opacity of the onscreen ink. Samsung has also thrown in fountain pen and calligraphy options. </p> <p>When you pull out the S Pen you get a modified version of Air Command - apps that you can use with the stylus. These include Action Memo for quick notes, Smart Select for saving text and images to your scrapbook, Image Clip for freeform shaped screenshots and Screen Write for scribbling annotations on screenshots. </p> <p>We&rsquo;ve most used Action Memo and Smart Select during our time with the Note 4 - both are simply quicker than the finger-controlled alternatives every smartphone user will be familiar with. The S Pen might spent plenty of time sleeping (according to Samsung) but it&rsquo;s still a big draw and holding the 5.7in phone in one hand with the S Pen writing in the other feels very natural.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/moto-g/best-cheap-smartphone-you-can-buy/feature">Group test - the best cheap smartphone you can buy</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="4000" height="3000" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN5397.JPG?1413614417" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="4000" height="3000" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN5430.JPG?1413614417" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="4000" height="3000" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN5391_0.JPG?1413614417" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Feature packed: freebies and fingerprint scanning </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>And then there&rsquo;s Multi Window, Samsung&rsquo;s feature for splitscreen multi-tasking. Hold down the back button and you can access the list of Samsung, Google and now a smattering of third party apps that you can run side by side, just as before. But the commands get more sophisticated every time we use it and now you can pop out one window to fullscreen, minimise multiple windows to bubbles, switch the apps around and drag and drop text and screenshots between apps.</p> <p>The last one of those is still a bit half-baked (it&rsquo;s tricky to tell what it will drag and what it won&rsquo;t) and we found ourselves accidentally minimising all our apps in the first few days to pop out windows. Even so it&rsquo;s the nearest thing to mimicking the ease and speed of using a laptop to simply get things done and Samsung&rsquo;s clearly continuing to put the effort in.</p> <p>Elsewhere, the Note 4 packs even more features than pixels - or so it seems from the intimidating settings menu. As on the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-s5/samsung-galaxy-s5/review">Galaxy S5</a>, though, Samsung&rsquo;s at least packaged useful freebies and Samsung apps into Galaxy Essentials and Galaxy Gifts so you get to choose which you download and take advantage of. In Galaxy Gifts there&rsquo;s six months free of the not-Spotify-but-close streaming service Deezer, 100GB of cloud storage for six months from RealPlayer, plus plenty of other subscriptions and trials.</p> <p>The Note 4 gets the S5&rsquo;s fingerprint scanning and heart rate monitoring tricks - both fun, futuristic extras but neither executed quite well enough. Keeping still long enough to swipe a finger over the S5&rsquo;s home button is painful enough - unlocking the Note 4 screen while walking down the street takes awkward to new levels.</p> <p>In fact, the fingerprint scanning is the only feature that we&rsquo;ve struggled to use because of the Note 4&rsquo;s size. If you have small hands, you might be concerned at the thought of taking this ginormous Galaxy out snapping. Don&rsquo;t be, it&rsquo;s a doozy.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/25-free-apps-android/feature">The 30 best free apps for Android</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="4000" height="3000" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN5404.JPG?1413614417" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="4000" height="3000" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN5425.JPG?1413614417" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="4000" height="3000" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN5436.JPG?1413614417" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-6"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> More megapixels for a low light hero </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>First, it&rsquo;s fast. Outdoors it&rsquo;s neck and neck with the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-iphone-6l/review">iPhone 6 Plus</a>, but when you turn the lights down low the Galaxy Note 4 is often the quickest to focus.&nbsp;</p> <p>Better yet, the 16MP rear camera shoots reliably detailed and accurate images in all conditions. Optical image stabilisation, also seen on the brilliant <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/g3/lg-g3/review">LG G3</a>, helps in low light situations as we found taking Instagram pics at the moodily lit <a href="http://www.whathifi.com/awards/2014">2014 What Hi-Fi? As long as you&rsquo;re patient enough to hold your arms steady, you can get snaps with less in the way of noise and undersaturation than you get with rivals.&nbsp;</p> <p>Overall, it&rsquo;s not a clear phone photography champ. Closer inspection shows that the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-iphone-6l/review">iPhone 6 Plus&rsquo; 8MP camera</a> can take slightly punchier, more balanced photos with a better range of tones. But add a clear and bright 3.7MP f/1.9 front facing camera and smooth video up to 4K, and the Note 4 is still a fantastic all-round smartphone snapper.&nbsp;</p> <p>The basic camera controls are simple to enough to touch focus and press the shutter button with quick access to HDR, resolution, flash and timer controls in one or two taps. The big 2K display makes for a truly awesome viewfinder, too. There are also manual controls tucked away and all manner of extras and gimmicks if you choose to use them, from the return of the software-based selective focus to the less useful and rather silly dual camera. Speaking of silly, the front camera now has a wide-angle selfie mode, too. Nokia&rsquo;s higher-end Lumia Windows Phones are plastic and quite glorious, as are the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/iphone-5c/review">iPhone 5c</a> and new <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/desire-eye/htc-desire-eye/review">HTC Desire Eye</a>, but the Galaxy S range has always fallen a little short of expected standards. That could and should change with the Galaxy S6.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-alpha/metal-last-samsung-galaxy-alpha-ditches-plastic/news">Metal at last: Samsung Galaxy Alpha ditches the plastic</a></strong></p> <p>Some sources have hinted at a &ldquo;more premium build&rdquo; for the S6, with Samsung going for an aluminium build, or even using super-advanced material graphene (which the company has <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/samsung/samsung-speeds-production-graphene-wonder-material/news">found a way to manufacture in greater quantities</a> than previously). While the latter would be a bold, memorable move, it&rsquo;d probably push the S6&rsquo;s manufacturing costs a little too high, and to be honest at this point we&rsquo;d be happy with metal rather than another year of uninspiring plastic.</p> <p>We&rsquo;d also expect to see some measure of dust- and waterproofing. The S5 is sealed against the elements, and its successor is sure to follow. It might even kick things up a notch so you can take it even deeper &lsquo;neath the waves: bumping the spec to IP68 from the S5&rsquo;s IP67 rating would mean you could completely immerse the phone for a prolonged period of time without water getting inside. No more desperate bags of rice and crossed fingers if your phone tumbles into the bath or the bog.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="604" height="453" title="The Galaxy Alpha proves Samsung can do metal phones" alt="The Galaxy Alpha proves Samsung can do metal phones" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-alpha-01_2.jpg?1413612122" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Screen: time for 2K? </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Galaxy S5 has a very solid screen: 5.1in; 1080p resolution; AMOLED technology. We think the chances of a 2K screen making its way into the S6 are very high indeed, and it&rsquo;ll probably get a slight size bump too (but maybe not too much, given that Samsung already has the Note 4 for people who want a huge screen).</p> <p>We&rsquo;d personally be more than happy with 2K and 5.2in &ndash; going any bigger risks making the phone too big for the hands of normal folks and going sharper strikes us as pixel overkill on a screen this size, especially as more pixels require more power and put more strain on the battery.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/g3/lg-g3/review">LG G3 review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Will Samsung match LG with a 2K screen? Both are quad-core, 64-bit and more powerful on paper than any smartphone processor at the time of writing, and we&rsquo;d be pretty happy to see either of them on the S6 (they seem likely to require more power than the S5&rsquo;s Snapdragon 801, however, which could put extra strain on the battery life &ndash; see below for more on that), especially if they were paired with at least 3GB of RAM.</p> <p>Samsung has form in launching its flagship phones with octo-core Exynos chipsets too, albeit not in the UK. While eight cores might sound twice as powerful as four, in reality it doesn&rsquo;t quite work like that: in benchmarks, the Exynos-equipped S5 only performs marginally better than the Snapdragon 801-equipped S5. We think Samsung can stick to a quad-core Snapdragon 808 or 810 and still offer the performance a phone like the S6 will require.</p> <p>We&rsquo;ll talk about storage here too. If it goes down the removeable backplate design route, Samsung is likely to support expandable storage via microSD, and thus the built-in storage doesn&rsquo;t need to be huge &ndash; let&rsquo;s say 32GB. If, however, the phone is has a metal unibody design and memory isn&rsquo;t user-increasable, we&rsquo;d like to see 64GB and maybe even 128GB as an option, just to keep pace with the Apple iPhone 6. And Samsung does like to be seen to be trying to keep up with Apple.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="We&#039;d love to see a powerhouse CPU like the Snapdragon 808 or 810" alt="We&#039;d love to see a powerhouse CPU like the Snapdragon 808 or 810" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/qualcomm-snapdragon_0.jpg?1413612122" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Battery: Bigger and better </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Galaxy S5 has a 2800mAh battery that matches up to the majority of its Android rivals by lasting around a day in normal use conditions (but not all: the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sony/sony-xperia-z3/review">Sony Xperia Z3</a> lasts at least half a day longer), and it holds an advantage over most too in that it&rsquo;s user replaceable. If Samsung decides to go with a seamless metal body that could change, and if it does we&rsquo;d like to see better battery life, either owing to a larger battery capacity or increased efficiency.</p> <p>The LG G3 has a 5.5in 2K screen and markedly longer battery life than the 5.1in, 1080p Galaxy S5, so it&rsquo;s certainly possible for Samsung to improve its power efficiency. Much of this will depend on the processor it chooses for the S6, and if that&rsquo;s the Snapdragon 808 or 810, neither seems likely to offer lower energy use than the S5&rsquo;s Snapdragon 805. So it could well be that a larger battery is required.</p> <p>Of course, Samsung may want to retain its user replaceable battery selling point, in which case it&rsquo;ll probably hint that those looking for more battery life could simply buy a second battery to carry around with them.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sony/sony-xperia-z3/review">Sony Xperia Z3 review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="The S5&#039;s battery is OK, but there&#039;s room for improvement" alt="The S5&#039;s battery is OK, but there&#039;s room for improvement" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-s5-battery_1.jpg?1413612122" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Camera: Better in low light, please </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Were we betting types, we&rsquo;d put a significant wedge on the S6&rsquo;s camera outstripping the S5&rsquo;s when it comes to megapixel count. The S5 has a 16MP sensor, and we&rsquo;d be surprised if the S6 doesn&rsquo;t take things above 20MP.</p> <p>But megapixels alone don&rsquo;t make a good photo, and we&rsquo;d much rather see some measures taken to boost performance in low light conditions: larger megapixels (Apple&rsquo;s favoured method), optical image stabilisation, a wider aperture, or a combination of those. Optical image stabilisation is a distinct possibility, we&rsquo;d say, as Samsung has already used it in the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/samsung/samsung-galaxy-note-4/review">Galaxy Note 4</a>.</p> <p>We&rsquo;re not personally much inclined to take selfies, but we hear a lot of &ldquo;the young people&rdquo; are, and Samsung may well attempt to entice them to the S6 with a higher resolution front-facing camera. The HTC Desire Eye manages to squeeze a 13MP snapper on its front side, and while we wouldn&rsquo;t expect (or want) Samsung to go to those lengths, we wouldn&rsquo;t be surprised to see something in the 7 or 8MP range.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/samsung/samsung-galaxy-note-4/review">Samsung Galaxy Note 4 hands-on review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The S5&#039;s camera could perform better in low light conditions" alt="The S5&#039;s camera could perform better in low light conditions" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-s5-camera_0.jpg?1413612122" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Release date: No hanging about </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>With Mobile World Congress 2015 running from 2nd-5th March, we&rsquo;d expect Samsung to make its big Galaxy S6 reveal around that time (March/April is the period when Samsung traditionally unveils its flagship Galaxy S devices). We&#39;ve not held one yet, but if it matches the Moto X&#39;s build quality we&#39;ll have no complaints.&nbsp;</p> <p>So, the specifics - it&#39;s big. Very big. It has a 5.96in screen plus a sizeable frame of 82.98 x 159.26 x 10.06mm. Like the Moto X, it&#39;s slightly curved. It has an aluminium trim and a matte plastic back. How will it feel in the hand? Impossible to say until we get a chance to hold one ourselves, but it&#39;s certainly not going to be one for the small handed.</p> <p>The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is hardly diminutive itself, but with a 5.7in display and a frame of&nbsp;153.5 x 78.6 x 8.5mm, it should be easier to manage one-handed than the latest Nexus. It&#39;s nowhere near as thick, for starters. </p> <p>Like the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/samsung-galaxy-alpha/review">Samsung Galaxy Alpha</a> it has a metal band running around its sides, which together with a slightly more premium feeling faux-leather back makes it the prettiest Note yet. That&#39;s not saying an awful lot though, and on looks alone we&#39;d go with the Nexus. But the Note 4 is also very comfortable to hold, so overall we&#39;re calling this one a draw.</p> <p><strong><em>Winner: Draw</em></strong></p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/samsung/samsung-galaxy-note-4/review">Hands on with the Samsung Galaxy Note 4</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="899" title="The Nexus 6 is a sharp looker" alt="Which smartphone? It has a 13MP sensor with an f/2 lens, plus optical image stabilisation - which should help it capture better shots in poor light. A dual LED ring flash should also help in that regard, while on the video side it can shoot 4K footage at 30fps. On the front, you&#39;ll find a 2MP camera for Skype and selfie needs.</p> <p>The Note 4&#39;s also had an upgrade over its predecessor: it now has a 16MP sensor to the Note 3&#39;s 13 megapixels. Like the Nexus 6 there&#39;s also built-in image stabilisation and 4K video shooting at 30fps. On the front, there&#39;s a 3.7MP camera.</p> <p>As with display, it&#39;s hard to make a call on this round without really putting both handsets through their paces. That makes them, on paper at least, among the most powerful of all Android smartphones. We haven&#39;t been able to benchmark either phone yet, but we suspect that the Nexus 6 will be slightly quicker: it runs pure Android Lollipop, which should be as slick as a Brylcreemed weasel, whereas the Note 4 has to contend with Samsung&#39;s not-always-perfect TouchWiz.</p> <p>In terms of storage, though, the Note 4 has an advantage. While it only comes in a single 32GB model, it&#39;s expandable via microSD - you could add up to another 128GB if you&#39;re feeling particularly wealthy. The Nexus 6 comes in 32 and 64GB versions, but neither are expandable.&nbsp;</p> <p>Still, 64GB will be enough for most people, and we do think the the Nexus is likely to be just a little faster in use. For that reason, we&#39;re giving this round to Google.</p> <p><em><strong>Winner: Google Nexus 6&nbsp;</strong></em></p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/google/google-nexus-9-7-things-you-need-know-about-first-android-lollipop-tablet/news">7 things you need to know about the Google Nexus 9</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The Nexus 6 lacks microSD storage" alt="Which smartphone? It&#39;s also likely to be cheaper. While UK pricing has yet to be announced, the 32GB version costs US$649. The Note 4 will set you back US$700.</p> <p>Against that, the Note has a higher-specced camera, microSD slot and of course the S Pen and all of its lovely tricks.</p> <p>In truth, we could go either way, and&nbsp;until we&#39;ve properly tried out the camera, given both devices a full battery test and seen their screens side by side, we should probably avoid taking sides.</p> <p>But that would be boring - so we&#39;re going with the Nexus 6. In the case of Apple and iOS 8, it&rsquo;s that those users who hadn&rsquo;t updated yet are widely resisting the move.</p> <p>Within the first few days of release, Apple&rsquo;s stats showed that 46% of active iOS device owners had upgraded to iOS 8 - an especially impressive number, given that the iPhone 4 was lopped off of the compatibility list for this version.</p> <p>But following the debacle with the broken iOS 8.0.1 release, that number has only increased 1% in the weeks since. And weirdly, the percentage of users running a version prior to iOS 7 grew as well (from 5% to 6%). While that last figure is truly odd, the overall takeaway seems to be that device owners don&rsquo;t seem anxious to make any big changes until it&rsquo;s certain that Apple has ironed out its kinks.</p> <p>[Source: <a href="https://developer.apple.com/support/appstore/">Apple</a> via <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2014/10/06/ios8-market-share-stagnated/">9to5Mac</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/ios-801-released-then-pulled-breaking-iphone-6-cell-service-and-touch-id/news">iOS 8.0.1 released, then pulled after breaking iPhone 6 cell service and Touch ID functionality</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Facebook&#039;s anonymous access plans </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Here&rsquo;s an unexpected development. Yes, there&rsquo;s still the faux-leather texture on its back (once again, Samsung: we could really, really live without this), but this time it&rsquo;s softer and grippier, while the metal band wrapped around the device&rsquo;s edges adds a further measure of both sturdiness and elegance.</p> <p>The LG G3, meanwhile, has a smooth plastic back that sort-of looks like metal, and curves nicely so that it fits better in your hand. On the front, the barely-there bezels mean it&rsquo;s almost totally Gorilla Glass 3 (also the material used to cover the Note 4&rsquo;s screen, incidentally).</p> <p>Neither phone has the premium feel of, say, the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sony/sony-xperia-z3/review">Sony Xperia Z3</a>, <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/htc/htc-one-2/review">HTC One (M8)</a> or <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-iphone-6l/review">Apple iPhone 6 Plus</a>, which is a shame, but the lack of metal does keep them lightweight &ndash; and both have removable backs allowing you to swap out batteries.</p> <p><em><strong>Verdict: Draw</strong></em></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The Note 4&#039;s pleather back is softer and more grippy than the Note 3&#039;s" alt="The Note 4&#039;s pleather back is softer and more grippy than the Note 3&#039;s" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-note-4-back-white.jpg?1411653941" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="It might look metallic, but the G3&#039;s back is plastic" alt="It might look metallic, but the G3&#039;s back is plastic" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/lg-g3-back-black.jpg?1411653941" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Screen: 2K X2 </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>You want a big, sharp screen? Both these phones have one &ndash; in fact, they&rsquo;re the biggest, sharpest screens around: the Note 4 packs a whopping 5.7in 2560 x 1440 AMOLED display, while the G3 has a 5.5in 2560 x 1440 LCD panel.</p> <p>While they have the same 2K resolution, there are a couple of differences worth noting. First, that extra .2 of an inch means the Note 3 has a tiny bit more acreage but a tiny bit less pixel density (515ppi as opposed to the G3&rsquo;s 534ppi &ndash; but if you can spot a difference in sharpness you have far better eyes than us). Second, the Note 4&rsquo;s AMOLED tech means its colours are a touch more vibrant and punchy. Some might find the G3&rsquo;s more muted tones a bit more true to life, of course, but the display settings are tweakable if you want to make things a touch more realistic.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s really too close to call a winner here, as both phones have incredibly sharp, large screens. After we&rsquo;ve reviewed the Note 4, we might be able to declare that one or the other maintains a slight edge, but if so it&rsquo;s going to be a really, really close-run thing.</p> <p><em><strong>Verdict: Draw for now</strong></em></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="319" title="The Note 4&#039;s 5.7in 2K screen: big enough for ya?" alt="The Note 4&#039;s 5.7in 2K screen: big enough for ya?" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-note-4-review-screen_3.jpg?1411653941" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="The G3&#039;s 2K screen was a game-changer upon launch" alt="The G3&#039;s 2K screen was a game-changer upon launch" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/LG%20G3%20Display%2002_0_0.jpg?1411653941" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Performance: A couple of beefy blowers </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The UK edition of the Galaxy Note 4 comes with a quad-core Snapdragon 805 processor clocked at 2.7GHz and 3GB of RAM, while the G3 sports a Snapdragon 801 running at 2.5GHz and 2GB of RAM. The laser allows the G3&rsquo;s 13MP main camera to autofocus far more swiftly than rival smartphone snappers, you see &ndash; and once you factor in optical image stabilisation, a dual-tone LED flash and the fact you can capture not just full HD but 4K video and you&rsquo;ve got one of the finest smartphone cameras around.</p> <p>We haven&rsquo;t had the opportunity to properly test the Galaxy Note 4&rsquo;s camera, but it has a 16MP sensor backed up with optical image stabilisation, which should make it a decidedly better performer than its predecessor &ndash; particularly in low light conditions. It can capture 4K video too.</p> <p>We have a sneaking feeling that the G3&rsquo;s laser trickery and dual-tone flash are going to make it a slightly better performer than the Note 4, but Samsung appears to have narrowed the gap quite dramatically. Multi Window returns, naturally, allowing you to multitask by running two apps side-by-side, and much of the Note 4&rsquo;s UI is designed to maximise the effectiveness of the S-Pen stylus. There&rsquo;s also a new voice recording app that takes advantage of the Note 4&rsquo;s three microphones and noise-cancelling technology to improve voice memos and interview quality. Oh, and it&rsquo;s also compatible with Samsung&rsquo;s Oculus Rift-style <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/gear-vr/samsung-gear-vr/review">Gear VR gaming headset</a>, which is something you definitely can&rsquo;t say about the G3.</p> <p>We&rsquo;ve moaned a lot about Samsung&rsquo;s love of bloatware in the past, but like LG the company seems to be moving in the right direction when it comes to loading its devices with unwanted apps. If that trend continues with the Note 4, it could end up pipping the G3 to the post here.</p> <p><em><strong>Winner: Draw for now</strong></em></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The G3&#039;s Smart Clean removes unwanted files quickly" alt="The G3&#039;s Smart Clean removes unwanted files quickly" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/LG%20G3%20OS%2002_0_0.jpg?1411653941" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="The Note 4&#039;s UI is geared towards S-Pen use" alt="The Note 4&#039;s UI is geared towards S-Pen use" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-note-4-review-apps_3.jpg?1411653941" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Initial verdict </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The LG G3 is still our favourite smartphone, but &ndash; on paper at least &ndash; the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is the closest that comes to replicating and even outdoing its most show-stopping specs and features: the huge 2K screen, the optical image stabilisation, the potential for massive amounts of on-board storage (you could argue that the Apple iPhone 6 Plus approaches them too, screen resolution aside).</p> <p>We reckon it won&rsquo;t be for everyone, and it&rsquo;ll likely be a bit pricier than the G3, but the Note 4 could prove the world&rsquo;s most powerful and fully-featured smartphone when it hits the shops in the coming weeks. Like a DSLR, it has a chunky handgrip, designed to give you a firm hold even if there&rsquo;s a lens heavier than a large bag of sugar screwed on.</p> <p>Construction is top-notch too. The NX1 body is made of magnesium alloy, giving you strength without masses and masses of weight. It still weighs 550g without a lens, but that&rsquo;s actually not too bad when you consider its size. While a CSC, it&rsquo;s a chunky little guy. A substantial grip is vital in a camera like this &ndash; we think Samsung has got the design right this time.</p> <p>Weather proofing means you don&rsquo;t have to play nice with the NX1 either. It&rsquo;s designed to keep dust out and is splash resistant. Don&rsquo;t drop it in water, but feel free to use it in the rain.</p> <p>The camera also offers supremely good manual control. For those who want to pretend Auto mode has never been invented, there can&rsquo;t be many better system cameras out there. As well as having the control dials needed to let you fiddle with settings without digging through menus, there&rsquo;s a monochrome LCD display on the top plate that tells you exactly what settings the camera is currently using. Only top-end cameras have these &ndash; and it&rsquo;s the first time we&rsquo;ve seen one on a CSC.</p> <p>It may look nerdy, but going the extra mile on features is what the Samsung NX1 is all about. There&rsquo;s even a lock on the mode dial &ndash;&nbsp;seems like a small addition, but a dial that&rsquo;s too easy to flick over can be monumentally annoying.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/nikon/nikon-d810/review">Nikon D810 review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The LCD plate keeps you informed of settings" alt="The LCD plate keeps you informed of settings" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-nx1-3.jpg?1411482706" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="There&#039;s a tough, weatherproof build" alt="There&#039;s a tough, weatherproof build" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-nx1-6.jpg?1411482706" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> My Plug in Baby </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>It almost has the same connectivity power as a smartphone too. As well as NFC and Wi-Fi, the Samsung NX1 has Bluetooth. Given how much of a pain most cameras make transferring photos over Wi-Fi, this is a great idea. Bluetooth is a bit slower than Wi-Fi, but it isn&rsquo;t half simpler for transferring just the odd photo.</p> <p>The NX1 also offers good tools for composing your photos. There&rsquo;s a Super AMOLED 3-inch screen on the back made up of 1,036k dots and a rather good XGA-red OLED EVF. Like so many of Samsung&rsquo;s phones, the NX1 is positively OLED obsessed. OLED screens offer superb contrast, but the EVF&rsquo;s colours did seem a bit over saturated when we tried the camera out. Fingers crossed we&rsquo;ll be able to tweak this in the final model.</p> <p>EVFs still aren&rsquo;t at the level of optical viewfinders in image quality terms, but as far as EVFs go, this one is very good. It&rsquo;s a great size, making it much more enjoyable to use than the postage stamp-size EVFs of old.</p> <p>The Samsung NX1 really embraces new tech, and you see this in its core hardware as well as some of the frilly bits around the edges. Two of the most important bits to mention are its video skills and the sensor.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android-44-kitkat/samsung-galaxy-k-zoom/review">Samsung Galaxy K Zoom review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="There&#039;s a nice, sharp AMOLED screen on the NX1&#039;s backside" alt="There&#039;s a nice, sharp AMOLED screen on the NX1&#039;s backside" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-nx1-7.jpg?1411482706" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 4K wrinkle-finder </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Clearly aiming to take some shine off the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/panasonic/panasonic-lumix-gh4/review">Panasonic GH4</a>, whose fab 4K video capture has made it a hit with amateur Spielbergs, the Samsung NX1 offers video capture in both UHD and 4K standards (contrary to popular belief, the two are actually different).</p> <p>Samsung is also keen to big-up that the camera&rsquo;s phase detection autofocus will make the picture a bit more stable when refocusing, and that you can send the uncompressed video feed directly to an external recorder over HDMI. This should come in handy for the more serious video freaks out there &ndash;&nbsp;4K video eats away gigabytes of data in no time.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/panasonic/panasonic-lumix-gh4/review">Panasonic Lumix GH4 review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="4K video? The Samsung NX1 has a 28-megapixel APS-C sensor, but unlike the other NX-series camera, it&rsquo;s a BSI sensor. This tech is used in phones to provide better low-light performance in the sort of teeny-tiny sensors you get in most mobile phones, but what will it do in a big APS-C one? We don&rsquo;t know yet, but it&rsquo;s one of the most exciting things about the Samsung NX1 for the photo purists out there. As long as Samsung hasn&rsquo;t overdone the noise reduction, we could be in for a real treat.</p> <p>Elsewhere, the Samsung NX1 has a new DRIMe V imaging engine that offers new noise reduction algorithms that &ndash; according to Samsung &ndash; are better at telling between fine detail and noise. There&rsquo;s no low-pass filter, either, which should make photos all the sharper.</p> <p>There&rsquo;s more to the Samsung NX1 brain than low-light skills though. You can shoot at up to 15fps at full resolution, with autofocus. That&rsquo;s very fast indeed &ndash; using burst mode fires out a noise that sounds like a tiny machine gun (even if there are no DSLR internals to actually make that noise). ISO range is great, going from 100 all the way up to 25,600, with an extended 51,200 mode available for emergencies. And there&rsquo;s even a separate green AF assist light for when the lights go really low.</p> <p>When light conditions are better, the Samsung NX1 is blazingly fast too. It uses a hybrid phase and contrast detection autofocus system, and virtually the whole sensor is covered by phase detection points too. There are 205 phase detection points, including 153 even more accurate cross-type ones. For a compact system camera, this is jaw-to-the-floor stuff.</p> <p>Samsung says the autofocus takes just 55ms, and it seemed pretty quick to us. But we&rsquo;ll see whether it can cope past midnight without a night light to keep it company when we get on to the full review.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sony/sony-qx1/review">Sony QX1 review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="That purply flash of colour is the APS-C sensor" alt="That purply flash of colour is the APS-C sensor" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-nx1-10.jpg?1411482706" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> A mode for every occasion… literally </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Of course, this wouldn&rsquo;t be a Samsung device without a silly-sounding extra or two. It&rsquo;s designed to get you cracking pics in a very specific set of sporting situations: to take a picture just as a baseball player hits the ball, for instance, and to take a shot when someone&rsquo;s at the very top point of a jump. And that&rsquo;s it for now. It&rsquo;s a work-in-progress.</p> <p>It sounds a bit silly, but the tech that goes into it is quite interesting. The Samsung NX1 assesses the scene at 240fps, so it can take a pic at just the right time. Now all we need is for major league baseball to come to the UK to make it remotely useful.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Initial verdict </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Samsung NX1 is a compact system camera well-equipped enough to attract people away from DSLRs, and not just cheap ones. Its spec cred is really beyond reproach. It doesn&rsquo;t have bags of style, but that&rsquo;s not what a camera like this is about. Performance, image quality and control are what matters here.</p> <p>The control and performance seem to be on the money in the Samsung NX1, but will the image quality live up to those high standards? We&rsquo;ll have to wait and see. Most of the other upgrades including the electronic shutter will soon be on all X-T1s with a firmware update though, so the only reason to get this would be for the new finish.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/fujifilm/fujifilm-x-t1/review">Fujifilm X-T1 review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="4896" height="3264" title="Fujifilm X-T1 Graphite Silver Edition " alt="Photokina 2014: 5 cameras we wanted to bring home" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCF3319.JPG?1411395168" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="4896" height="3264" title="Fujifilm X-T1 Graphite Silver Edition " alt="Photokina 2014: 5 cameras we wanted to bring home" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCF3322.JPG?1411395168" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Fujifilm X100T </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p dir="ltr">As for the X100T, it&rsquo;s a nice evolution of last year&rsquo;s X100S, upgrading the advanced hybrid viewfinder with a new graphic interface. Similar to their approach with smartphones, Samsung has stuffed the NX1 full of impressive features, which helps to explain the bulk. It even has a plasticky feel to go with it...</p> <p dir="ltr">But we weren&rsquo;t kidding when we said the features were impressive: the top has an LCD display like a pro DSLR, the camera can shoot up to 15fps, it&rsquo;s capable of 4K video, it&rsquo;s got a 205-point autofocus system, and it&rsquo;s the world&rsquo;s first 28MP APS-C backside illuminated CMOS sensor. It might be able to shoot really fast, with a decent electronic viewfinder and vibrant images appearing beautifully on the tilt-enabled touch display, but adjusting settings isn&rsquo;t quite so speedy. the fiscal year ending in March, which is about five times larger than the original projection. Sadly, that also means that Sony plans to cut about 1000 workers, or 15% of the headcount from the division.</p> <p>With other companies having much more success with low-priced devices, Sony says that it will refocus its smartphone efforts on higher-end devices while cutting some of the mid-range fluff. The Hollywood Reporter&rsquo;s sources say a 2016 debut is now more likely.</p> <p>[Source: <a href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/x-men-spinoff-deadpool-gets-734172">The Hollywood Reporter</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/playstation-3/deadpool/review">Deadpool (video game) review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/LoXGsv9nsNs" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> http://www.stuff.tv/iphone-6/fully-charged-sony-refocusing-high-end-phones-samsung-trade-ins-surge-due-iphone-6-and-dead#comments Android Film and TV iPhone 6 iPhone 6 Plus Samsung Smartphones Sony Fri, 19 Sep 2014 06:30:00 +0000 Andrew Hayward 1448035 at http://www.stuff.tv Samsung Galaxy Note 4 out 10 October in UK, pre-orders begin tomorrow http://www.stuff.tv/android/samsung-galaxy-note-4-out-10-october-uk-pre-orders-begin-tomorrow/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Seeking to steal some thunder from the iPhone 6 Plus, Samsung shows its hand </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Samsung Galaxy Note 4" alt="Samsung Galaxy Note 4" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/samsung-galaxy-note4.jpg?1411064780" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>As expected, mid-October is when Samsung will launch the new Galaxy Note 4, with a 10 October date pegged today for the UK and a debut in the United States following soon thereafter.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/andrew-hayward" title="View user profile.">Andrew Hayward</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/samsung-galaxy-note-4-out-10-october-uk-pre-orders-begin-tomorrow/news" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/android/samsung-galaxy-note-4-out-10-october-uk-pre-orders-begin-tomorrow/news#comments Android Galaxy Note 4 Samsung Smartphones Thu, 18 Sep 2014 18:24:21 +0000 Andrew Hayward 1448008 at http://www.stuff.tv
