Both Samsung and LG have put a lot of effort into making their premium devices look sufficiently premium.</p> <p>The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is a level above its predecessor when it comes to build quality. Yes, there&rsquo;s still the faux-leather texture on its back (once again, Samsung: we could really, really live without this), but this time it&rsquo;s softer and grippier, while the metal band wrapped around the device&rsquo;s edges adds a further measure of both sturdiness and elegance.</p> <p>The LG G3, meanwhile, has a smooth plastic back that sort-of looks like metal, and curves nicely so that it fits better in your hand. On the front, the barely-there bezels mean it&rsquo;s almost totally Gorilla Glass 3 (also the material used to cover the Note 4&rsquo;s screen, incidentally).</p> <p>Neither phone has the premium feel of, say, the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sony/sony-xperia-z3/review">Sony Xperia Z3</a>, <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/htc/htc-one-2/review">HTC One (M8)</a> or <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-iphone-6l/review">Apple iPhone 6 Plus</a>, which is a shame, but the lack of metal does keep them lightweight &ndash; and both have removable backs allowing you to swap out batteries.</p> <p><em><strong>Verdict: Draw</strong></em></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The Note 4&#039;s pleather back is softer and more grippy than the Note 3&#039;s" alt="The Note 4&#039;s pleather back is softer and more grippy than the Note 3&#039;s" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-note-4-back-white.jpg?1411653941" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="It might look metallic, but the G3&#039;s back is plastic" alt="It might look metallic, but the G3&#039;s back is plastic" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/lg-g3-back-black.jpg?1411653941" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Screen: 2K X2 </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>You want a big, sharp screen? First, that extra .2 of an inch means the Note 3 has a tiny bit more acreage but a tiny bit less pixel density (515ppi as opposed to the G3&rsquo;s 534ppi &ndash; but if you can spot a difference in sharpness you have far better eyes than us). Second, the Note 4&rsquo;s AMOLED tech means its colours are a touch more vibrant and punchy. Some might find the G3&rsquo;s more muted tones a bit more true to life, of course, but the display settings are tweakable if you want to make things a touch more realistic.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s really too close to call a winner here, as both phones have incredibly sharp, large screens. After we&rsquo;ve reviewed the Note 4, we might be able to declare that one or the other maintains a slight edge, but if so it&rsquo;s going to be a really, really close-run thing.</p> <p><em><strong>Verdict: Draw for now</strong></em></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="319" title="The Note 4&#039;s 5.7in 2K screen: big enough for ya?" alt="The Note 4&#039;s 5.7in 2K screen: big enough for ya?" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-note-4-review-screen_3.jpg?1411653941" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="The G3&#039;s 2K screen was a game-changer upon launch" alt="The G3&#039;s 2K screen was a game-changer upon launch" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/LG%20G3%20Display%2002_0_0.jpg?1411653941" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Performance: A couple of beefy blowers </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The UK edition of the Galaxy Note 4 comes with a quad-core Snapdragon 805 processor clocked at 2.7GHz and 3GB of RAM, while the G3 sports a Snapdragon 801 running at 2.5GHz and 2GB of RAM. The laser allows the G3&rsquo;s 13MP main camera to autofocus far more swiftly than rival smartphone snappers, you see &ndash; and once you factor in optical image stabilisation, a dual-tone LED flash and the fact you can capture not just full HD but 4K video and you&rsquo;ve got one of the finest smartphone cameras around.</p> <p>We haven&rsquo;t had the opportunity to properly test the Galaxy Note 4&rsquo;s camera, but it has a 16MP sensor backed up with optical image stabilisation, which should make it a decidedly better performer than its predecessor &ndash; particularly in low light conditions. It can capture 4K video too.</p> <p>We have a sneaking feeling that the G3&rsquo;s laser trickery and dual-tone flash are going to make it a slightly better performer than the Note 4, but Samsung appears to have narrowed the gap quite dramatically. Multi Window returns, naturally, allowing you to multitask by running two apps side-by-side, and much of the Note 4&rsquo;s UI is designed to maximise the effectiveness of the S-Pen stylus. There&rsquo;s also a new voice recording app that takes advantage of the Note 4&rsquo;s three microphones and noise-cancelling technology to improve voice memos and interview quality. Oh, and it&rsquo;s also compatible with Samsung&rsquo;s Oculus Rift-style <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/gear-vr/samsung-gear-vr/review">Gear VR gaming headset</a>, which is something you definitely can&rsquo;t say about the G3.</p> <p>We&rsquo;ve moaned a lot about Samsung&rsquo;s love of bloatware in the past, but like LG the company seems to be moving in the right direction when it comes to loading its devices with unwanted apps. That gives it a whopping great pixels per inch count of 515 - that&#39;s slightly lower than that of the G3&#39;s smaller 5.5in screen, but it&#39;s still higher than most rivals and we didn&#39;t notice any difference in sharpness. We did, however, notice a difference in colour. </p> <p>Unlike the G3, which has an LCD panel, the Note 4 uses Samsung&#39;s Super AMOLED display, and the results are simply stunning. </p> <p>If you&#39;ve seen the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/samsung-galaxy-tab-s-84/review">Galaxy Tab S</a> range of tablets then the Note 4&#39;s screen will be instantly familiar. Colours are punchy enough to wallop your retinas (in a good way), and its true blacks easily trounce those of the G3, thanks to AMOLED&#39;s ability to completely turn off pixels to render black. </p> <p>Some users might find the unrealistically vibrant colours a little OTT, but a quick play around with the display settings lets you tone things down a bit, resulting in more realistic colours while retaining the deep blacks. </p> <p>The Note 4 uses the same Adaptive Display technology found in the Galaxy Tab S range, which means that it automatically adjusts its colours according to the warmness and brightness of ambient light. We didn&#39;t get to test this out in detail, nor were we allowed to take the Note 4 outdoors to test its performance in bright sunshine, but if the Tab S screens are anything to go by, the Note 4 should handle the sun&#39;s rays with ease.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-s5/samsung-galaxy-s5/review" target="_blank">Samsung Galaxy S5 review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1600" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-note-4-review-screen.jpg?1411553676" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Premium at last </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The body of the Note 4 has also received a welcome upgrade. The Note 4 also retains the Galaxy S5&#39;s rear heart-rate monitor and home button fingerprint scanner.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/smartphones/top-ten">The 10 best smartphones in the world right now</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-note-4-review-rear.jpg?1411553676" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Power in spades </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>We expect the UK variant of the Note 4 to land with Qualcomm&#39;s Snapdragon 805 processor and 3GB of RAM, making it one of the most powerful smartphones ever. </p> <p>Qualcomm&#39;s new chip is beefy enough, in fact, to turn the Note 4 into an Oculus Rift-like VR headset, when slotted into the Gear VR. </p> <p>READ MORE: Samsung Gear VR hands-on review </p> <p>Not only is the 805 more powerful, but because its more efficient, Samsung has told us that the Note 4 actually surpasses the Note 3 when it comes to battery life, despite having to push all those extra pixels. We didn&#39;t get a chance to put the optical image stabilisation through its paces either, but if the LG G3&#39;s performance is anything to go by, we expect the Note 4&#39;s low-light shots to improve as a result.</p> <p>The front-facing camera also has a new wide-angle selfie mode, which sweeps across like a panorama to capture you and your entire host of pouting comrades without cutting anyone off. Like a DSLR, it has a chunky handgrip, designed to give you a firm hold even if there&rsquo;s a lens heavier than a large bag of sugar screwed on.</p> <p>Construction is top-notch too. The NX1 body is made of magnesium alloy, giving you strength without masses and masses of weight. It still weighs 550g without a lens, but that&rsquo;s actually not too bad when you consider its size. While a CSC, it&rsquo;s a chunky little guy. A substantial grip is vital in a camera like this &ndash; we think Samsung has got the design right this time.</p> <p>Weather proofing means you don&rsquo;t have to play nice with the NX1 either. It&rsquo;s designed to keep dust out and is splash resistant. Don&rsquo;t drop it in water, but feel free to use it in the rain.</p> <p>The camera also offers supremely good manual control. For those who want to pretend Auto mode has never been invented, there can&rsquo;t be many better system cameras out there. As well as having the control dials needed to let you fiddle with settings without digging through menus, there&rsquo;s a monochrome LCD display on the top plate that tells you exactly what settings the camera is currently using. Only top-end cameras have these &ndash; and it&rsquo;s the first time we&rsquo;ve seen one on a CSC.</p> <p>It may look nerdy, but going the extra mile on features is what the Samsung NX1 is all about. There&rsquo;s even a lock on the mode dial &ndash;&nbsp;seems like a small addition, but a dial that&rsquo;s too easy to flick over can be monumentally annoying.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/nikon/nikon-d810/review">Nikon D810 review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The LCD plate keeps you informed of settings" alt="The LCD plate keeps you informed of settings" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-nx1-3.jpg?1411482706" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="There&#039;s a tough, weatherproof build" alt="There&#039;s a tough, weatherproof build" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-nx1-6.jpg?1411482706" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> My Plug in Baby </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>It almost has the same connectivity power as a smartphone too. As well as NFC and Wi-Fi, the Samsung NX1 has Bluetooth. Given how much of a pain most cameras make transferring photos over Wi-Fi, this is a great idea. Bluetooth is a bit slower than Wi-Fi, but it isn&rsquo;t half simpler for transferring just the odd photo.</p> <p>The NX1 also offers good tools for composing your photos. There&rsquo;s a Super AMOLED 3-inch screen on the back made up of 1,036k dots and a rather good XGA-red OLED EVF. Like so many of Samsung&rsquo;s phones, the NX1 is positively OLED obsessed. OLED screens offer superb contrast, but the EVF&rsquo;s colours did seem a bit over saturated when we tried the camera out. Fingers crossed we&rsquo;ll be able to tweak this in the final model.</p> <p>EVFs still aren&rsquo;t at the level of optical viewfinders in image quality terms, but as far as EVFs go, this one is very good. It&rsquo;s a great size, making it much more enjoyable to use than the postage stamp-size EVFs of old.</p> <p>The Samsung NX1 really embraces new tech, and you see this in its core hardware as well as some of the frilly bits around the edges. Two of the most important bits to mention are its video skills and the sensor.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android-44-kitkat/samsung-galaxy-k-zoom/review">Samsung Galaxy K Zoom review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="There&#039;s a nice, sharp AMOLED screen on the NX1&#039;s backside" alt="There&#039;s a nice, sharp AMOLED screen on the NX1&#039;s backside" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-nx1-7.jpg?1411482706" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 4K wrinkle-finder </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Clearly aiming to take some shine off the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/panasonic/panasonic-lumix-gh4/review">Panasonic GH4</a>, whose fab 4K video capture has made it a hit with amateur Spielbergs, the Samsung NX1 offers video capture in both UHD and 4K standards (contrary to popular belief, the two are actually different).</p> <p>Samsung is also keen to big-up that the camera&rsquo;s phase detection autofocus will make the picture a bit more stable when refocusing, and that you can send the uncompressed video feed directly to an external recorder over HDMI. This should come in handy for the more serious video freaks out there &ndash;&nbsp;4K video eats away gigabytes of data in no time.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/panasonic/panasonic-lumix-gh4/review">Panasonic Lumix GH4 review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="4K video? The Samsung NX1 has a 28-megapixel APS-C sensor, but unlike the other NX-series camera, it&rsquo;s a BSI sensor. This tech is used in phones to provide better low-light performance in the sort of teeny-tiny sensors you get in most mobile phones, but what will it do in a big APS-C one? We don&rsquo;t know yet, but it&rsquo;s one of the most exciting things about the Samsung NX1 for the photo purists out there. As long as Samsung hasn&rsquo;t overdone the noise reduction, we could be in for a real treat.</p> <p>Elsewhere, the Samsung NX1 has a new DRIMe V imaging engine that offers new noise reduction algorithms that &ndash; according to Samsung &ndash; are better at telling between fine detail and noise. There&rsquo;s no low-pass filter, either, which should make photos all the sharper.</p> <p>There&rsquo;s more to the Samsung NX1 brain than low-light skills though. You can shoot at up to 15fps at full resolution, with autofocus. That&rsquo;s very fast indeed &ndash; using burst mode fires out a noise that sounds like a tiny machine gun (even if there are no DSLR internals to actually make that noise). ISO range is great, going from 100 all the way up to 25,600, with an extended 51,200 mode available for emergencies. And there&rsquo;s even a separate green AF assist light for when the lights go really low.</p> <p>When light conditions are better, the Samsung NX1 is blazingly fast too. It uses a hybrid phase and contrast detection autofocus system, and virtually the whole sensor is covered by phase detection points too. There are 205 phase detection points, including 153 even more accurate cross-type ones. For a compact system camera, this is jaw-to-the-floor stuff.</p> <p>Samsung says the autofocus takes just 55ms, and it seemed pretty quick to us. But we&rsquo;ll see whether it can cope past midnight without a night light to keep it company when we get on to the full review.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sony/sony-qx1/review">Sony QX1 review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="That purply flash of colour is the APS-C sensor" alt="That purply flash of colour is the APS-C sensor" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-nx1-10.jpg?1411482706" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> A mode for every occasion… literally </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Of course, this wouldn&rsquo;t be a Samsung device without a silly-sounding extra or two. And the Samsung NX1&rsquo;s is Smart Shutter. It&rsquo;s designed to get you cracking pics in a very specific set of sporting situations: to take a picture just as a baseball player hits the ball, for instance, and to take a shot when someone&rsquo;s at the very top point of a jump. And that&rsquo;s it for now. It&rsquo;s a work-in-progress.</p> <p>It sounds a bit silly, but the tech that goes into it is quite interesting. The Samsung NX1 assesses the scene at 240fps, so it can take a pic at just the right time. Now all we need is for major league baseball to come to the UK to make it remotely useful.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Initial verdict </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Samsung NX1 is a compact system camera well-equipped enough to attract people away from DSLRs, and not just cheap ones. Its spec cred is really beyond reproach. It doesn&rsquo;t have bags of style, but that&rsquo;s not what a camera like this is about. Performance, image quality and control are what matters here.</p> <p>The control and performance seem to be on the money in the Samsung NX1, but will the image quality live up to those high standards? We&rsquo;ll have to wait and see. It&rsquo;s a promising start, though.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/system-cameras/top-ten">The 10 best system cameras in the world right now</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Look out for a full in-depth review of the Samsung NX1 soon" alt="Look out for a full in-depth review of the Samsung NX1 soon" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-nx1-8_0.jpg?1411482706" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-review-rating"><legend>Review Rating</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 0 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-preview"> <div class="field-label">Preview:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Preview </div> </div> </div> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/samsung-nx1-hands/review" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/samsung-nx1-hands/review#comments NX1 Samsung System Cameras Tue, 23 Sep 2014 14:31:48 +0000 Marc McLaren 1447683 at http://www.stuff.tv Photokina 2014: 5 cameras we wanted to bring home http://www.stuff.tv/fujifilm/photokina-2014/photokina-2014-5-cameras-we-wanted-bring-home/feature <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> We stalked the halls of the world&#039;s top camera show looking for sexy snappers... and here&#039;s what we found </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="2448" height="2448" title="That&#039;s not a camera. The LCD screen has been improved in terms of brightness and resolution, there&rsquo;s new detailing on the top dials, the revolving ring on its predecessor has made way for a regular arrow pad, and the function buttons on the rear panels have been changed too.</p> <p dir="ltr"><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/fujifilm/fujifilm-finepix-x100s/review">Fujifilm Finepix X100S review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="4896" height="3264" title="Fujifilm X100T" alt="Photokina 2014: 5 cameras we wanted to bring home" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCF3332.JPG?1411395168" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="4896" height="3264" title="Fujifilm X100T" alt="Fujifilm X100T" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCF3329.JPG?1411395168" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Leica X </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Leica&rsquo;s new digital offering is surprisingly light given its M camera-like size. Similar to their approach with smartphones, Samsung has stuffed the NX1 full of impressive features, which helps to explain the bulk. It even has a plasticky feel to go with it...</p> <p dir="ltr">But we weren&rsquo;t kidding when we said the features were impressive: the top has an LCD display like a pro DSLR, the camera can shoot up to 15fps, it&rsquo;s capable of 4K video, it&rsquo;s got a 205-point autofocus system, and it&rsquo;s the world&rsquo;s first 28MP APS-C backside illuminated CMOS sensor. It might be able to shoot really fast, with a decent electronic viewfinder and vibrant images appearing beautifully on the tilt-enabled touch display, but adjusting settings isn&rsquo;t quite so speedy. world right now - but they&rsquo;re just not catching on with consumers like the company wants them to.</p> <p>As a result, Sony says it will post a loss of US$2.14 billion (&pound;1.3 billion) for the fiscal year ending in March, which is about five times larger than the original projection. Sadly, that also means that Sony plans to cut about 1000 workers, or 15% of the headcount from the division.</p> <p>With other companies having much more success with low-priced devices, Sony says that it will refocus its smartphone efforts on higher-end devices while cutting some of the mid-range fluff. The Hollywood Reporter&rsquo;s sources say a 2016 debut is now more likely.</p> <p>[Source: <a href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/x-men-spinoff-deadpool-gets-734172">The Hollywood Reporter</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/playstation-3/deadpool/review">Deadpool (video game) review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/LoXGsv9nsNs" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> http://www.stuff.tv/iphone-6/fully-charged-sony-refocusing-high-end-phones-samsung-trade-ins-surge-due-iphone-6-and-dead#comments Android Film and TV iPhone 6 iPhone 6 Plus Samsung Smartphones Sony Fri, 19 Sep 2014 06:30:00 +0000 Andrew Hayward 1448035 at http://www.stuff.tv Samsung Galaxy Note 4 out 10 October in UK, pre-orders begin tomorrow http://www.stuff.tv/android/samsung-galaxy-note-4-out-10-october-uk-pre-orders-begin-tomorrow/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Seeking to steal some thunder from the iPhone 6 Plus, Samsung shows its hand </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Samsung Galaxy Note 4" alt="Samsung Galaxy Note 4" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/samsung-galaxy-note4.jpg?1411064780" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>As expected, mid-October is when Samsung will launch the new Galaxy Note 4, with a 10 October date pegged today for the UK and a debut in the United States following soon thereafter.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/andrew-hayward" title="View user profile.">Andrew Hayward</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/samsung-galaxy-note-4-out-10-october-uk-pre-orders-begin-tomorrow/news" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/android/samsung-galaxy-note-4-out-10-october-uk-pre-orders-begin-tomorrow/news#comments Android Galaxy Note 4 Samsung Smartphones Thu, 18 Sep 2014 18:24:21 +0000 Andrew Hayward 1448008 at http://www.stuff.tv Apple iPhone 6 Plus vs Samsung Galaxy Note 4: the weigh-in http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-iphone-6-plus-vs-samsung-galaxy-note-4-weigh/feature <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Apple takes on Samsung&#039;s Note range with its first phablet – how will the reigning champ fare against the upstart? Yes, it still sports a grippy, soft faux-leather back as seen on the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-note-3/samsung-galaxy-note-3/review" target="_blank">Galaxy Note 3</a>, but the tacky fake stitches are gone. Samsung has also &ndash; finally &ndash; embraced metal phone construction, wrapping the Note 4 with a metal band that&#39;s reminiscent of the outgoing <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/iphone-5s/review" target="_blank">iPhone 5s</a>. Round the back there&#39;s a heart-rate sensor, while the home button does double duty as a fingerprint scanner.</p> <p>That pleather back is removable, of course &ndash; letting you swap out the 3,220mAh battery and slip in a microSD card for up to 128GB of extra storage. Unlike the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-s5/samsung-galaxy-s5/review" target="_blank">Samsung Galaxy S5</a>, though, the Note 4 isn&#39;t waterproof &ndash; putting it on a level playing field with the iPhone 6 Plus in terms of durability.</p> <p>Apple has overhauled the design language for its smartphone range this year; the iPhone 6 Plus has an all-metal build that ditches the slab-like design of the iPhone 5s for a softer, curvier look. The power button has moved from the top of the phone to the right hand side &ndash; a virtual necessity for a phablet &ndash; while down the bottom there&#39;s the familiar Touch ID fingerprint sensor. It&#39;s extremely thin, its 7.1mm frame making the Note 4 look positively chunky at 8.5mm thick &ndash; though the camera array does protrude from the surface of the phone, which may prove irksome when you&#39;re setting it down on a table.</p> <p>Apple&#39;s design skills are second to none, though; while Samsung&#39;s made great strides with the Note 4, it&#39;s just not quite as desirable as an object.</p> <p><strong>Verdict: iPhone 6 Plus</strong></p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/iphone-6-vs-htc-one-m8-weigh/feature">Apple iPhone 6 vs HTC One (M8) - the weigh-in</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/A4zs3D_EEYA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Apple iPhone 6 Plus vs Samsung Galaxy Note 4: the weigh-in" alt="Apple iPhone 6 Plus vs Samsung Galaxy Note 4: the weigh-in" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/9_1.jpg?1410971266" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Apple iPhone 6 Plus vs Samsung Galaxy Note 4: the weigh-in" alt="Apple iPhone 6 Plus vs Samsung Galaxy Note 4: the weigh-in" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-note-4-review-rear_2.jpg?1410971266" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Screen: bigger is better </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>For its first foray into phablet territory, Apple has opted for a 5.5in, 1080p screen, delivering 401ppi. The Note sports a Super AMOLED display, which delivers punchy colours, true blacks (thanks to AMOLED&#39;s ability to completely turn off pixels) and wide viewing angles. It can be a bit too vivid, but different screen profiles enable you to dial down the colours if necessary. There&#39;s really no contest here; the Note 4&#39;s screen is a thing of beauty, and on specs alone it leaves the iPhone 6 Plus in the dust.</p> <p><strong>Verdict: Galaxy Note 4</strong></p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/samsung-galaxy-note-edge/review">Meet the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge - the 3-sided Note 4</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Apple iPhone 6 Plus vs Samsung Galaxy Note 4: the weigh-in" alt="Apple iPhone 6 Plus vs Samsung Galaxy Note 4: the weigh-in" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-note-4-review-screen_2.jpg?1410971266" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Apple iPhone 6 Plus vs Samsung Galaxy Note 4: the weigh-in" alt="Apple iPhone 6 Plus vs Samsung Galaxy Note 4: the weigh-in" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/6_0_2.jpg?1410971266" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Camera: OIS for everyone </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Apple has stuck with the same 8MP, &fnof;/2.2 iSight snapper found in the iPhone 5s and iPhone 6, augmented with 1.5&micro; pixels &ndash; which Apple claims will deliver swifter autofocus. It moves the lens components to adjust for your wobbly hands, and should help the camera&#39;s performance in low light situations. The Plus can shoot 1080p video at up to 60fps, and (Apple&#39;s party piece) will also shoot slo-mo video at up to 240fps. The iPhone also features a 1.2MP FaceTime camera, with an &fnof;/2.2 aperture and backside illumination sensor.</p> <p>Sounds impressive, right? The battle lines are drawn, the trenches dug &ndash; and the vitriol will doubtless be spewing in the comment section below.</p> <p>Broadly speaking, though, it boils down to a simple choice. Do you want to tinker with the setup of your phone, or would you rather sacrifice the ability to customise it for the assurance of having someone else curate your experience for you?</p> <p>Apple has added a raft of new features to iOS 8 &ndash; fixing a lot of the criticisms that the &#39;droid faithful direct at it. So you get NFC payment (in the US) with fingerprint authentication; third-party keyboard support; and widgets in the notifications pulldown. Apps will now play nice with each other (though Apple will act as gatekeeper), letting you fiddle with camera filters from all your apps by tapping on a photo, or bid on eBay auctions from the Notification Centre. HealthKit will likewise bring together data from several health apps in one place, making keeping fit a lot simpler.</p> <p>Android and Samsung may have introduced those features first &ndash; but that&#39;s immaterial; what matters is how well Apple&#39;s implemented them. It&#39;s certainly removed a big differentiating factor between the two operating systems.</p> <p>The Note 4 comes loaded with <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/android-44-kitkat/review" target="_blank">Android 4.4.4 KitKat</a>, skinned with Samsung&#39;s TouchWiz interface. KitKat&#39;s feature set includes the useful Google Now &ndash; which is at times genuinely eerie in its ability to predict your needs before you know them, and at times infuriatingly obtuse.</p> <p>Samsung&#39;s TouchWiz is &ndash; as per usual &ndash; stuffed with features over and above Android 4.4.4&#39;s already-comprehensive set. BlinkFeed-style news feeds, Smart Rotation and Quick Glance are all handy, but none of them are particularly essential. And Multi Window makes the best of the Note&#39;s screen real estate, letting you run two apps side by side &ndash; very handy for work-related tasks.</p> <p>With iOS 8, Apple has have upped its operating system&#39;s feature set to rival Android&#39;s &ndash;&nbsp;but the Note 4 adds features over and above stock Android, thanks to its S Pen and TouchWiz. However, it&#39;s also worth noting that Android still lags behind iOS in terms of app releases, with many developers still creating apps for Apple first &ndash; or not developing for &#39;droid at all.</p> <p><strong>Verdict: Tie</strong></p> <p><strong>READ MORE: iOS 8: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/ios-8/review" target="_blank">Everything you need to know about Apple&#39;s new operating system</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="624" height="468" title="Apple iPhone 6 Plus vs Samsung Galaxy Note 4: the weigh-in" alt="Apple iPhone 6 Plus vs Samsung Galaxy Note 4: the weigh-in" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/8_1_0.jpg?1410971266" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Apple iPhone 6 Plus vs Samsung Galaxy Note 4: the weigh-in" alt="Apple iPhone 6 Plus vs Samsung Galaxy Note 4: the weigh-in" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/note-4.jpg?1410971266" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Features: The S pen is mightier... </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The iPhone&#39;s standout feature is its Touch ID fingerprint sensor. Whether you&#39;re unlocking apps or (new to iOS 8) using it to authenticate transactions, it&#39;s simple and intuitive. The Note 4&#39;s fingerprint sensor is clunky by comparison, though its ability to launch apps using specific fingers is handy. The Note 4 also packs a heart-rate monitor, though we&#39;ll be honest: it&#39;s far less useful than the plethora of heart-rate sensors on fitness trackers.</p> <p>But what really matters here is the S Pen. Samsung&#39;s stylus adds a raft of handy tricks, and is even more intuitive on the Note 4 than on its predecessor. Improved pressure sensitivity allows for natural handwriting, while you now have the ability to highlight text and select multiple photos using the stylus &ndash; far easier than fiddling about with your fingers.</p> <p><strong>Verdict: Galaxy Note 4</strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Apple iPhone 6 Plus vs Samsung Galaxy Note 4: the weigh-in" alt="Apple iPhone 6 Plus vs Samsung Galaxy Note 4: the weigh-in" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-note-4-review-apps_2.jpg?1410971266" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Performance: A8 vs Snapdragon 805 </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Note 4 is an absolute powerhouse &ndash; Qualcomm&#39;s quad-core 2.7GHz Snapdragon 805 processor provides plenty of grunt, paired with 3GB RAM. Samsung even claims that it&#39;ll outdo the Note 3 in terms of battery life, despite having to power its screen&#39;s increased pixel count. And, of course, you can always swap out that battery when it runs out of juice &ndash; good luck doing that on an iPhone, without a chisel and a soldering iron. Similarly, the Note 4&#39;s 32GB of internal storage is expandable by up to 128GB using microSD; the iPhone 6 Plus is limited to a maximum of 128GB internal memory (and that model will cost you more than a 128GB MacBook Air).</p> <p>Apple is notoriously cagey about releasing the specs of its processors, saying only that the 64-bit A8 that underpins the iPhone 6 Plus is &quot;incredibly powerful&quot;, paired with its M8 motion processor. Benchmarking scores show that the Snapdragon 801 chipset found in the Samsung Galaxy S5 comfortably <a href="http://m.gsmarena.com/iphone_6_a8_gpu_benchmark_suggests_its_behind_the_curve-news-9630.php" target="_blank">outperforms</a> the A8 &ndash; so the Note 4&#39;s Snapdragon 805 should do similarly well. However, because Apple keeps a tight leash on its range of phones, app developers can tailor their software to make the most of Apple&#39;s processors; the fragmented Android platform means that devs can&#39;t do the same, even if individual &#39;droids have more processing power to work with.</p> <p>Despite that caveat, the Galaxy Note 4&#39;s raw power suggests that it&#39;ll outperform the iPhone 6 Plus on paper &ndash; though we&#39;ll have to wait until we can get both devices in for a full review before we can deliver a definitive verdict.</p> <p><strong>Verdict: Galaxy Note 4</strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/Tv7C4e8thv0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-6"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Verdict: take note </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Apple&#39;s making a tentative first step into phablet territory with the iPhone 6 Plus &ndash; and it&#39;s certainly going to appeal to iOS diehards who&#39;ve been desperate for a bigger screen.</p> <p>But Samsung has years of experience making big-screened devices; over the years it&#39;s been making Galaxy Note devices, they&#39;ve evolved from slightly clunky curios into market leaders. So rather nice. It gives the Galaxy Alpha the cool and hard feel that is largely behind why metal phones feel more expensive than plastic ones. We&rsquo;re simple creatures.</p> <p>As far as design experiments go, it&rsquo;s a pretty successful one. The edges are quite severe and sharp (but bevelled), rather like the iPhone 5S, but as the 4.7in Galaxy Alpha isn&rsquo;t too large, handling it is dead easy.</p> <p>Get over the nice feel of that band of metal and things come back down to earth. The back plate is still a flimsy piece of plastic as is the inner frame. The band of metal is just that &ndash; a thin border that sits around the phone.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s not the most coherent phone design we&rsquo;ve ever seen either. A bit like the Nokia Lumia 930, the mix of metal and plastic means it doesn&rsquo;t have the design purity of the most jaw-dropping phones. The Alpha is Samsung doing pretty, not gallery-worthy.</p> <p>You also lose out on water resistance while gaining the extra bit of metal. Where the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-s5-mini/samsung-galaxy-s5-mini/review">Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini</a> has treated ports and a rubber seal on the inside of its back cover so you can dunk it in water, the Alpha is not designed to withstand apple-bobbing. It&rsquo;s a bummer, and shows that Samsung hasn&rsquo;t really put its all into the phone. It&rsquo;s just er, testing the waters.</p> <p>That said, waterproofing is the only hardware extra we really missed. You still get a fingerprint scanner under the Home button, and a heart rate sensor on the back. We&rsquo;d probably trade away both to have a phone you can use in the bath, though.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:</strong> <strong><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-s5-mini/samsung-galaxy-s5-mini/review">Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini tested&nbsp;</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1600" height="900" title="Samsung finally gave us a metal band .. no, not the head banging type " alt="Samsung Galaxy Alpha review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/alpha-4.jpg?1410954150" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1600" height="900" title="Flimsy " alt="Samsung Galaxy Alpha review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/alpha-11.jpg?1410954150" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1600" height="900" title="Remind you of iAnything? It&rsquo;s a 4.7in display &ndash; smaller than the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-s5/samsung-galaxy-s5/review">Galaxy S5</a> but a perfectly good size if you&rsquo;re after a slightly smaller phone.</p> <p>What&rsquo;s not as great is the resolution. The Galaxy Alpha has a 720p screen when most phones at the price have 1080p ones. Shop around online and you can even get an LG G3 for not much more &ndash; and that phone has an even higher-res 2K screen.</p> <p>In the Alpha, the limits of a 720p screen are quite obvious if you go looking for them, more so than an LCD screen. Why? It&rsquo;s all down to the kind of display the phone uses. It&rsquo;s a Super AMOLED display, one that uses a PenTile subpixel arrangement. Without getting too techy, this uses a pixel array that makes areas of block white look a little fuzzy, and text a bit less sharp. As a result the Galaxy Alpha looks a fair bit less sharp than even the &pound;100 <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/motorola/motorola-moto-g/review">4.5in Moto G</a>.</p> <p>Top brightness isn&rsquo;t quite at the same level as the Galaxy S5. While you can see the Alpha display in bright sunlight, it&rsquo;s not as clear as the S5.</p> <p>It still looks very good, though, and the Alpha offers you loads of control over how vivid the colours are. Fresh out of the box they&rsquo;re a bit too lively &ndash; many people love them like this &ndash; but switch the screen to &lsquo;basic&rsquo; and you get a similar sort of colour accuracy the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-s5/samsung-galaxy-s5/review">Galaxy S5</a> is capable of. Like your colours truly overblown? That&rsquo;s an option too. Like other OLED screens, the Samsung Galaxy Alpha also gets you incredibly deep blacks, perfect blacks in fact, and contrast is top-notch. Just a shame about that resolution, then.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1600" height="900" title="Reads well outdoors but it&#039;s no S5 " alt="Samsung Galaxy Alpha review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/alpha-cf.jpg?1410954150" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Samsung Galaxy Alpha tech specs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><strong>Screen</strong>: 4.7in LCD Super AMOLED (1280X720)<br /><strong>OS</strong>: Android 4.4.4<br /><strong>Processor</strong>: Exynos 5 Octa 5430 1.8GHz processor<br /><strong>RAM</strong>: 2GB<br /><strong>Storage</strong>: 32GB<br /><strong>Bluetooth</strong>: 4.0<br /><strong>Water &amp; Dust Resistance</strong>: None<br /><strong>Battery</strong>: Li-Polymer 1860mAh<br /><strong>Dimensions</strong>: 132.4 X 65.5 X 6.7mm<br /><strong>Weight</strong>: 115g</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> OS: all the fours </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Again, there are a few little cuts compared to the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-s5/samsung-galaxy-s5/review">Galaxy S5</a>, but the software is very similar. You get Android 4.4.4 at launch, and Samsung&rsquo;s latest custom Android interface.</p> <p>In the last year, Samsung has done a lot to try and make its Android UI a bit more streamlined, a bit less like juggling a bag of features that keeps on spilling over. And it&rsquo;s mostly successful. The basics are clean and simple, and it doesn&rsquo;t waggle all of its extra bits in your face.</p> <p>However, there&rsquo;s plenty under the surface, and that does mean the Settings menu is absolutely gargantuan. It looks nothing like the regular Android menu and newbies may get phased.</p> <p>Samsung packs a bunch of extra apps into the Alpha too. Some of these have been around for years, like the S Planner calendar, but others like S Health are needed to make use of the phone&rsquo;s actual hardware. S Health is where you monitor your heart rate using the sensor on the back, and it&rsquo;s also the app that tracks your steps each day &ndash; if you want the Alpha to act as a fitness tracker. Samsung has a habit of making things less simple than they could be, and there are plenty of ways to clean the phone up if you don&rsquo;t get on with these apps. Some can be uninstalled, but you can also hide those you can&rsquo;t.</p> <p>You get 32GB storage as standard, which is greater than most of the Galaxy S5s in the UK, so app storage space isn&rsquo;t much of an issue.</p> <p>Unlike some other Samsung devices we&rsquo;ve tested in the last year or so, the Galaxy Alpha doesn&rsquo;t suffer from any major performance stuttering. This seems more likely to be down to Samsung tightening-up its software rather than improvements in hardware, but the engine running here is very, very fast too.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1600" height="900" title="S Health, S Planner, it&#039;s all here " alt="Samsung Galaxy Alpha review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/alpha-8.jpg?1410954150" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Wiggle my joystick, luv </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Performance is the one area the Alpha just doesn&rsquo;t compromise.&nbsp;</p> <p>It uses a Samsung Exynos 5430 Octa-core processor, which has four Cortex-A15 cores and four Cortex-A7 ones. In the Geekbench 3 benchmark it scores an extremely impressive 3086 points &ndash; even more than the 2800-odd points you might get from a <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-s5/samsung-galaxy-s5/review">Galaxy S5</a>. For a phone with &lsquo;only&rsquo; a 720p screen, this is masses of power.&nbsp;</p> <p>Gaming performance is excellent, and you get the extra little graphical flashy bits in top-end games like Dead Trigger 2 that were missing when we used the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-s5-mini/samsung-galaxy-s5-mini/review">Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini</a>. It&rsquo;s a surprise powerhouse, and has 2GB RAM too.&nbsp;</p> <p>Those gaming skills do make us wish the internal speaker was a little better, though. Sound quality and top volume are pretty impressive for a phone this thin &ndash; although the sound is a little harsh at top volume &ndash; but the output is very much mono, and it&rsquo;s too easy to block the speaker when you&rsquo;re doing a bit of landscape gaming.&nbsp;</p> <p>There is one benefit to a bottom-firing speaker, though. It means the back of the Alpha doesn&rsquo;t vibrate like a nightclub subwoofer when the volume&rsquo;s turned up as it does in the Galaxy S5 and the S5 Mini.&nbsp;</p> <p>We did also notice that the Galaxy Alpha seems to suffer from the old problem of some metal-coated phones &ndash; signal issues. It&rsquo;s decent enough in normal use, but if you cover too much of the phone&rsquo;s sides your signal level will drop like a stone. It never totally killed the signal, but is a sign that the plastic inlays in the metal frame haven&rsquo;t been implemented quite well enough.&nbsp;</p> <p>See the little white bits in the metal surround? These are usually used to improve signal for things like Wi-FI and mobile signal when the sides of a phone are largely metal. Aside from this, though, actual call quality is perfectly fine. You just need to be a bit careful about how you handle the Galaxy Alpha at times.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1600" height="900" title="A few signal issues here and there " alt="Samsung Galaxy Alpha review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/alpha-5.jpg?1410954150" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1600" height="900" title="No S5 style vibrations with this speaker " alt="Samsung Galaxy Alpha review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/s5-alpha-4.jpg?1410954150" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Speedy Snapper </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Samsung Galaxy Alpha camera sits somewhere between the<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-s5/samsung-galaxy-s5/review"> Galaxy S5</a> and<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-s5-mini/samsung-galaxy-s5-mini/review"> S5 Mini</a> in terms of image quality. But it certainly has the shooting performance we&rsquo;ve come to expect from Samsung&rsquo;s top-end phones.&nbsp;</p> <p>Focusing and shooting speed are excellent. In daylight you can shoot 2-3 photos a second without even using one of the burst shot modes. Samsung really is a master in this field, and it makes taking photos with your phone so much fun &ndash; not to mention making action shots easier to catch.&nbsp;</p> <p>Camera resolution is a bit worse than the S5 &ndash; the Alpha has a 12-megapixel sensor instead of a 16-megapixel one. However, you can still get loads of detail out of the Alpha and we&rsquo;re pretty impressed by its shooting consistency. It&rsquo;s simply dead easy to get good shots out of this little camera.&nbsp;</p> <p>HDRs are fast to take and super-effective, and as long as lighting is decent, colour accuracy is good. Non-flash night or indoors shots do start looking a little undersaturated, but they do in most phones. It&rsquo;s good enough to replace a basic compact camera, in other words. Like the S5, shooting gets a fair bit slower in low lighting thanks to the way the low-light Picture Stabilisation mode works, but even that&rsquo;s not too bad.&nbsp;</p> <p>The Alpha is also equipped with a single-LED flash and a front camera for those selfie moments. And the range of extra modes is much the same as the S5. So you get background-blurring Selective Focus and loads of smart burst modes. You can even shoot video in Ultra HD resolution.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:</strong>&nbsp;<strong><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sony/sony-xperia-z3-compact/review">Sony Xperia Z3 Compact - with 20.7MP camera - hands on impressions&nbsp;</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1600" height="900" title="It focuses and shoots very quickly " alt="Samsung Galaxy Alpha review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/alpha-camera-2.jpg?1410954150" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1600" height="900" title="Handy LED flash " alt="Samsung Galaxy Alpha review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/alpha-camrea.jpg?1410954150" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1600" height="900" title="Selfie cam present and correct " alt="Samsung Galaxy Alpha review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/alpha-selfie.jpg?1410954150" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Short on Stamina </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>One bit that has been chopped down a bit in the Alpha is the battery. We got 10 hours of 720p MP4 video from a charge where the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-s5-mini/samsung-galaxy-s5-mini/review">S5 Mini</a> lasted for 11 hours 54 minutes. The phone&rsquo;s processor is efficient, but it&rsquo;s not a miracle worker.&nbsp;</p> <p>In general use, we found that the Galaxy Alpha comfortably lasts the day with charge to spare, but you really do have to cut your use significantly to get anywhere near two days, or even a full day and a half. We have a feeling Samsung may have sacrificed the battery size a bit to get the design of the phone exactly as it wanted. Battery life is fine but better in several of Samsung&rsquo;s other phones, the Alpha is not waterproof and it needs to keep an eye on aerial performance if it wants to avoid an &ldquo;Antennagate&quot; style scandal in the Galaxy S6.&nbsp;</p> <p>Ultimately, the Samsung Galaxy Alpha is a neat experiment in Samsung&rsquo;s phone designs that tells us a lot about the way its mobiles are probably headed. Less plastic that&rsquo;s meant to look like metal and more of the real stuff is a good thing.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE</strong>: <strong><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/smartphones/top-ten">The ten best smartphones you can buy - including the Samsung Galaxy S5&nbsp;</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1600" height="900" title="A design experiment gone right " alt="Samsung Galaxy Alpha review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/alpha-front-22.jpg?1410954150" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-review-rating"><legend>Review Rating</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-review-type"> <div class="field-label">Type:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> power </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 9 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-review-type"> <div class="field-label">Type:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> screen </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 7 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-review-type"> <div class="field-label">Type:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> build </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 8 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-review-type"> <div class="field-label">Type:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Camera </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 8 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-review-type"> <div class="field-label">Type:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> apps </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 8 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-verdict"> <div class="field-label">Verdict:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>A smaller phone with zero compromise power but battery life could be better. But the Galaxy S5&#39;s waterproof, durable build might be music to the ears of many ex-iPhone owners who endured cracked screens for half their contracts. Or who dropped it down the loo after a month. The S5&#39;s dimpled polycarbonate back works to make this the grippiest, not slippiest Galaxy to date and it&#39;s light (for a big 5.1in phone) too at 145g.</p> <p>Then there&#39;s the iPhone 6. With a new 4.7in screen, it&#39;s bigger than the 5s but no less lovely. With new rounded edges, a bit like we&#39;ve just seen on the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sony/sony-xperia-z3/review">Sony Xperia Z3</a>, Apple is vying for better ergonomics than the iPhone 5s. And now you&#39;ll be able to tell which way the screen is facing when you slide it out of your pocket or bag. A few details have changed, such as the the oblong volume buttons and the camera is now slightly raised above the aluminium on the rear - that&#39;s because Cupertino&#39;s packed in a lot of glass. Probably the most impressive detail is those slim bezels either side of the Retina HD screen. Plus the new 6.9mm skinniness - the 8.1mm S5 looks fat by comparison.&nbsp;</p> <p>It comes down to this - the iPhone 6 is prettier, the Samsung more practical. The S5 is less impressively engineered than its predecessor and just doesn&#39;t feel like a &pound;500+ device. The iPhone 6 is as expensive-looking and desirable as ever, with no extra durability announced so far. We&#39;d wager it will be the smartphone of choice for everyone from monarchs to muggers with its killer looks.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong><em>Winner: iPhone 6&nbsp;</em></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="iPhone 6 vs Galaxy S5" alt="iPhone 6 vs Galaxy S5" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Untitled-3_2_0.jpg?1410828886" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="940" height="705" title="iPhone 6 vs Galaxy S5" alt="iPhone 6 vs Galaxy S5" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Samsung_Galaxy_S5_smartphone_review_05_0.jpg?1410828886" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Screen: A bigger, small iPhone screen </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>It&#39;s all change in the screen department. With two new screen sizes, the iPhone 6 comes in at 4.7in in size - possibly the absolute sweet spot between a bigger screen size and ergonimics for anyone with smaller hands. It&#39;s not a sapphire display as expected but Apple did boast that it&#39;s covered in ion-toughened glass to help avoid unsightly cracks.&nbsp;</p> <p>As for the resolution, it&#39;s just higher than 720p showing that Apple won&#39;t be bullied into the pixel wars by its rivals. That&#39;s 1334x750 to be exact and 326ppi - the original benchmark for a Retina display. Only now Apple&#39;s calling it Retina HD. It&#39;s not just more pixels, we can also look forward to higher contrast, wider viewing angles and more accurate colours thanks to dual-domain pixels.&nbsp;</p> <p>As for the S5, it&#39;s 5.1in Full HD Super AMOLED screen is one of the best we&#39;ve ever laid eyes on. Its colour reproduction is second to none, especially those inky blacks, and at 432ppi it&#39;s still incredibly sharp. It&#39;s also the brightest we&#39;ve used outdoors, making it more useful than most on the go.</p> <p>Our only complaint? Having to dive into the display settings when movies look too saturated or homescreens look drab in Samsung&#39;s modes - adapt display does auto adjust depending on the app but we end up tweaking it anyway.&nbsp;</p> <p>It&#39;s a close one to call but the S5&#39;s screen is bigger, sharper and probably brighter - we&#39;re not sure how the iPhone could get near its brightness levels. It&#39;ll require hours of eyeballing but for now we&#39;ll give this one to the Galaxy.&nbsp;</p> <p><em><strong>Winner: Samsung Galaxy S5&nbsp;</strong></em></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="567" height="425" title="iPhone 6 vs Galaxy S5" alt="iPhone 6 vs Galaxy S5" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Samsung_Galaxy_S5_review_42_0_2.jpg?1410828886" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="567" height="425" title="iPhone 6 vs Galaxy S5" alt="iPhone 6 vs Galaxy S5" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Untitled-1_6_0.jpg?1410453861" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Camera: Simple vs features? </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Only 8 megapixels? Calm down, Apple&#39;s throwing plenty of improvements into the iPhone 6&#39;s camera. A new sensor, for one, with an f/2.2 aperture lens, faster autofocus and software image stabilisation - it&#39;s the 5.5in iPhone 6 Plus that gets OIS. The True Tone flash stays plus video gets a boost - new 240fps slow-mo video plus the ability to shoot 1080p footage at both 30 and 60fps. The f/2.2 aperture front FaceTime camera gets a burst mode for selfies and HDR video too.&nbsp;</p> <p>The S5&#39;s 16MP camera offers seriously quick autofocus and masses of detail so you can really zoom in on every shot after you&#39;ve taken it. In daytime, it&#39;s tough to beat. And it&#39;s only outclassed by top Androids such as the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/htc/htc-one-2/review">One (M8)</a> and<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/g3/lg-g3/review"> LG G3</a> in low light where it&#39;s still much better than your average smartphone snapper - just not the best. Features and modes have been trimmed down but there&#39;s still lots to play with such as its software powered Selective Focus function. Video, in 1080p or 4K, is crisp and smooth too.&nbsp;</p> <p>The iPhone has always been one of the most reliable tap-and-go smartphone cameras and with faster AF and a new sensor, we can&#39;t wait to test it out. US only at launch, it lets you use the TouchID fingerprint scanner to tap your phone to pay via NFC, with cards stored in the Passbook app. iOS hasn&#39;t changed that much elsewhere - widgets in the notifications pulldown and the new Health app side. The main changes make it easier to work across iOS and Yosemite with features such as Continuity and Handoff syncing everything across both - perfect for MacBook or iMac owners.&nbsp;</p> <p>With the new bigger screen, Apple has also introduced Reachability - double tap on the home button and the screen moves down so you can reach the top. We&#39;re not sure this is the most elegant solution but we&#39;ll wait to try it out before criticising it too much.&nbsp;</p> <p>Samsung&#39;s Galaxy phones have always been bursting with new features and the S5 is no exception: heart rate monitor on the back, fingerprint scanner, running two apps side by side with Multi Window and the Flipboard-style My Magazine screen.</p> <p>But finally Samsung has enforced a bit of order on it all - this version of TouchWiz, running over Android KitKat, is the cleanest yet. We still prefer iOS&#39;s aesthetic and simple structure but the S5 is a good compromise between (digital) form and function.&nbsp;</p> <p>The apps playing field has levelled out a lot though occasionally there are apps such as Vine or Instagram that launch standalones or features on iOS first. Aside from looks and ease of use, Apple&#39;s charge into health and payments could make iOS the mobile operating system to beat. Now, the 5s is almost unflappable so our main problem is finding games, apps and benchmarks to really test out these improvements. More excitingly, Apple says the A8 is 50% - yep 50% - more power efficient than its predecessor, the A7. That means higher battery life in both the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus - ten hours 4G browsing on the 6 and 11 hours of video. As usual, Apple hasn&#39;t actually told us the size of the battery.&nbsp;</p> <p>Like the S5, the iPhone should have blistering connection speeds - thanks to more 4G bands (with faster download speeds) and fast 802.11ac Wi-Fi. Apple is even introducing Wi-Fi calls, supported by EE in the UK, with hand-off to the network too.&nbsp;</p> <p>The S5? Samsung&#39;s problem was never power, it regularly put the fastest silicon on the planet into its flagships. It was always the little things that tripped it up - still, the S5 is the most lag-free Samsung Galaxy yet down to a Snapdragon 801 processor and tweaks to TouchWiz. Put it this way, you can play 4K video in one window while scrolling around the web in another.</p> <p>Connectivity is as fast as expected - there&#39;s MiMo Wi-Fi and Samsung&#39;s Download Booster which combines Wi-Fi and 4G. A browsing, streaming and downloading showdown is in order. These are two of the most powerful mobile devices on the planet, it&#39;s no surprise they&#39;re both pocket rockets.&nbsp;</p> <p><em><strong>Winner: draw&nbsp;</strong></em></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper brightcove-player-wrapper"> <script language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript" src="http://admin.brightcove.com/js/BrightcoveExperiences.js"></script> <script src="http://admin.brightcove.com/js/APIModules_all.js"></script> <div class="brightcove-player"> <object id="myExperience-3482514087001" class="BrightcoveExperience"> <param name="bgcolor" value="#000000" /> <param name="playerID" value="" /> <param name="playerKey" value="AQ~~,AAAAEgPmGlk~,Fzd-TvXcznw-P3piHaryQBMeIzWITldz" /> <param name="isVid" value="true" /> <param name="isUI" value="true" /> <param name="dynamicStreaming" value="true" /> <param name="@videoPlayer" value="3482514087001" /> <param name="autoStart" value="" /> <param name="htmlFallback" value="true" /> <param name="includeAPI" value="true" /> <param name="templateLoadHandler" value="brightcoveTemplateLoaded" /> <param name="width" value="640px" /> <param name="height" value="360px" /> </object> <!-- This script tag will cause the Brightcove Players defined above it to be created as soon as the line is read by the browser. But Apple has always succeeded in building phones that work, and work beautifully. With a bigger screen, refined design, new sensor and better battery life, Apple&#39;s new smartphone ticks a lot of boxes. While it can be easy to confuse the names of the various Asus tablets, you won&rsquo;t have trouble telling the ME572C apart from its brethren upon sight.</p> <p>See, the 7in Android tablet is designed to look much like a clutch bag, with a lightly textured finish in colors like Champagne Gold, Burgundy Red, and&hellip; Gentle Black. Despite the soft touch on the design, it sounds pretty capable, with an Intel Atom 64-bit quad-core processor and a Full HD IPS display running at 323ppi.</p> <p>And like its visual inspiration, it should be rather svelte, coming in at just 8.3mm thick and 269g. The MeMO Pad 7 (ME572C) is due out in Q4 from John Lewis for &pound;179.99.</p> <p>[Source: <a href="http://press.asus.com/PressReleases/p/ASUS-ZenWatch-Announced-at-IFA-2014#.VAeiAFa1WCY">Asus</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/asus/asus-shows-haul-fresh-android-tablets/news">Asus shows off haul of fresh Android tablets</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Temple Run coming to Gear VR </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><em>Temple Run</em> is one of the absolute biggest mobile games of all time, generating more than 170 million downloads across versions and platforms, and it can get fairly frantic as you&rsquo;re swiping to dodge hazards at high speeds.</p> <p>We imagine it&rsquo;ll be a lot crazier in first-person, which is what&rsquo;s coming in <em>Temple Run VR</em> for Samsung&rsquo;s newly-announced Gear VR headset.
