Forget the low-ish pixel-count, this camera has the lot: handling, features and image quality. Add that to the high-powered battery, good for a claimed 2000 shots, and you have a real belter

The size, design and build of the Nikon D50 are spot-on. All the main features are intuitively placed and although the lens is noisier than the more expensive 18-70mm, it’s super sharp.

As a result, rattling off quality shots will be a breeze for beginners, while experienced snappers will no doubt astound themselves and, indeed, others.

There’s no memory card – as you’d expect – but you do get battery, charger, cables and software. You have to pay extra for RAW file conversion software, mind.

If you’re going to take the plunge, make sure you buy the ‘kit’ form that comes with an 18-55mm lens – that’ll add around £150 to the body-only price.

The D50 is top-notch, with a battery that could go for 2000 shots. In spite of a lower than ideal pixel-count, this camera has blown us away.
