Even if you’re far from a petrolhead, we’re guessing you’ve heard of the Audi R8. And if you haven’t, it’s time to get acquainted. This stunning machine is Audi’s attempt at creating an affordable supercar, and has a strong chance of giving the likes of Porsche a run for its money.

Muscle car
The R8’s squat, muscular shape gives it a real edge, especially when you combine it with the retractable rear spoiler, sporty 19in alloys, carbon-fibre side panels and LED headlights. One look and you’ll be sloshing around in a puddle of your own drool.

The interior deserves a mention, too. There are carbon-fibre door pulls, sports seats, a lovely flat-bottomed steering wheel and plenty of strategically positioned aluminium bits and pieces. It looks as good inside as it does out.

The R8 also sounds fantastic, thanks to a specially designed Bang & Olufsen sound system. It comprises of not just a couple, but twelve speakers dotted around the interior – including a full range speaker in the centre. And what a system! It has to be one of the best in-car set-ups on the planet. Who’d have thought in-car kit could sound so refined?

Bellowing exhaust pipes
The heart of the R8 is a rear-mounted 4.2L V8 engine, which is also glass-covered so you can perv whenever you wish. If you want the fully pimped effect you could always tick the options box for ambient lighting for the engine.

Tickle the accelerator and the four exhaust pipes bellow and growl, taunting you to do it again and again. Who are you to argue with a car that has 420bhp and a top speed of 187mph?

It drives like a demon, too. The chassis is taut, the ride fluid-comfortable and hugely rewarding. Once again, Audi’s Quattro four-wheel drive system makes mincemeat out of country roads, carving them up with seemingly endless levels of grip. You’re also thankful in the knowledge that your back is being covered by an extremely powerful set of brakes.

So there you have it. Audi’s dabble has paid off as the R8 strikes a powerful blow for the ‘affordable’ supercar. Where do we sign?

What more can I say? There's nothing I can think of that this car doesn't have. Audi speaks for itself and this model makes no exception. A friend told me once, it would take a real prove of altruism and generosity if someone could put an Audi on a donate car list, I tend to agree.

German cars are made to perform with the maximum acceleration on its amazing compact package. Unlike muscle cars that require cowl hood the cars could run smoothly without having a huge engine.
