R-KAID-R is an arcade powerhouse in a hand-crafted wooden case

This wooden box looks like it's an antique chest, but open it up and it's a portable MAME-powered arcade machine

Looks like it belongs on my granny's dressing table…
Until you open it up – then R-KAID-R looks like a vintage arcade powerhouse. That belongs on your granny's dressing table. Seriously, look at those adorable little filigree designs around the screen.

Yes, but why does it look like an antique?
Manufacturer Love Hultèn reckons that we're addicted to the upgrade cycle – and too ready to chuck electronic kit away after a couple of years. It's trying to create a product that'll last and acquire a patina – hence the solid wood construction. You can pick up the R-KAID-R in a variety of finishes, including emerald green maple, walnut and black ash, with brass detailing.

What can my silver-haired grandma play on it, then?
Quite a lot; it runs MAME, so pretty much any vintage arcade game is up for grabs. The R-KAID-R supports (deep breath) Neo Geo, PC Engine/Turbo Grafx 16, PS1, Atari 2600, Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, NES, Super NES, Sega Master System and Mega Drive and SCUMMvm titles, as well as Doom and Duke Nukem 3D.

What about the hardware?
You get an 8-way joystick, 10 push buttons and a mono speaker to play your games with – and an 8in, 800x600 monitor to watch them on. The R-KAID-R also comes with USB and SD card connections, plus a stereo jack and HDMI out.

Well, I'm sold. How much?
€2,500. Or £1,980 of your British pounds.

I'm sorry, there must be something in my ear, because I could swear you said £1,980.
You heard correct. You'll have to be pretty dedicated to want to spend that much on an arcade emulator, but the R-KAID-R is a rather beautiful object. So you'll undoubtedly want to snap up the hand-stitched leather carry case to tote it around in, for a mere €240 (£190).
