But there’s one area in which Android phones have failed us time and again, and that is...the camera.</p> <p dir="ltr">For some reason, Android phone cameras just ain’t bringing it with their inaccurate colour replication, loss of detail and demand of completely steady hands. They do try to compensate with loads of camera features, but they’re not fooling us much. While most people are more concerned with how ridiculous you’ll look (<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/7-ways-look-good-using-phablet/feature-0" target="_blank">we have the solution for that</a>), one feature was uncharacteristically left out of the limelight - the stylus.</p> <p dir="ltr">The S Pen triggered a revival of the smartphone stylus, once a necessary tool to interact with the resistive touchscreens of antique devices. Yet, the Samsung stylus has done more than that, introducing Air View, which shows a preview of an image or e-mail when the S Pen hovers over them, on the Galaxy Note 2.</p> <p dir="ltr">Last week, the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sg/galaxy-note-3/samsung-galaxy-note-3/review" target="_blank">Galaxy Note 3</a> revealed a new feature for the S Pen, dubbed Air Command, that reveals a ring with five commands - Action Memo, Scrap Booker, Screen Write, S Finder and Pen Window. Action Memo, in particular, is a nifty little tool that makes handwriting interact naturally with the phone’s features. It’s teamed up with 2GB of RAM. That sounds like an awful lot of processing power.</p> <p>The only phone here that matches it on paper is the Sony Xperia Z1, which also packs the Snapdragon 800 at 2.2GHz and 2GB of RAM.</p> <p>The iPhone 5 has a proprietary dual-core 1.3GHz A6 chip and 1GB of RAM, and the HTC One rocks a quad-core Snapdragon 600 running at 1.7GHz and 2GB of RAM. The Samsung Galaxy S4 also sports 2GB of RAM and a Snapdragon 600, but it’s clocked slightly higher than the One at 1.9GHz. All, on paper, lag behind the LG G2.</p> <p>In practice, the G2 wipes the floor with the above opposition (with the exception of the Xperia Z1, which we haven't tested yet but expect to run it very close). In our review, it garnered an AnTuTu benchmark score of almost 34,191, while the HTC One managed "only" 25,651. It uses IPS LCD tech and offers better brightness (if not sharpness) than the HTC One’s 4.7in 1920 x 1080 LCD. It also has wide viewing angles (not hugely important for a phone but nice all the same) and deep, inky blacks.</p> <p>The Samsung S4’s 5in Super AMOLED matches G2 for resolution, while the iPhone 5’s 4in LCD Retina display features 1136 x 640 pixels, putting it at the bottom of this particular pile.</p> <p>The Sony Xperia Z1's LCD offers the same 1920 x 1080 resolution in a 5in size, so it's slightly sharper than the G2. We have yet to test it out fully, so can't say with certainty which offers the better colour reproduction and contrast. Sony has crammed new picture-enhancing technologies (Triluminous Display and X-Reality) into the Z1, however, which may give it the edge.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Samsung Galaxy S4" alt="Samsung Galaxy S4" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-s4.jpg?1378784537" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Build quality </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The G2’s outer body is mostly constructed from plastic, but unlike the S4 doesn’t have a removeable backplate, so it’s less creaky than Samsung’s phone. The One in particular, with its beautifully machined, seamless unibody, feels like a phone apart in this group. The Sony Xperia Z1 is also a sleeker, more sophisticated-looking handset than the G2 and comes with the added bonus of waterproofing.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/htc-one.jpg?1378784537" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Camera </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>LG has equipped the G2 with a 13MP camera and optical image stabilisation (OIS) to combat the blurriness that can occur when taking photos with unsteady hands. It’s the only phone here to offer OIS, but the feature is available on certain Nokia Lumia models (like the excellent <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/nokia-lumia-1020/review">1020</a>).</p> <p>The Sony Xperia Z1 features a 20.7MP sensor, while the Samsung Galaxy S4 comes with a 13MP sensor, the iPhone 5’s snapper offers 8MP and the HTC One musters 4MP. Of course, the One’s sensor has an “UltraPixel” design that cuts down the number of pixels in order to make each individual pixel larger and more effective in low light. So it’s not really helpful to merely compare megapixel counts when discussing which camera is best. There’s also the quality of the lens, colour reproduction and contrast to consider. The iPhone 5, for instance, is widely regarded as better for photos than the Galaxy S4 despite its smaller number of megapixels.</p> <p>In testing the G2's snapper proves as impressive as it looks on paper. It's particularly adept in low light, even with the flash turned off, delivering far sharper shots than the Samsung S4. The colours pop more too.</p> <p>The Xperia Z1 seems most likely to prove a formidable opponent when it comes to camera quality (although the G2 still holds the optical stabilisation card). You won't get similar longevity from the iPhone 5, HTC One or Galaxy S4.</p> <p>The iPhone 5 has a 1,440mAh battery, the HTC One 2,300mAh and the Samsung Galaxy S4 2,600mAh. The S4 is the only model here with a user-swappable battery, however, so you’re able to carry a spare around with you in case of power running low.</p> <p>What we are interested to see is how the Sony Z1 matches up. And yes, Sense 5 is beautiful.</p> <p class="p1">It’s like the HTC design team took the best of the flat Holo design language from the core of Android, then set about making every element slightly better (don’t bother sending the hate mail, AOSP lovers - I won’t open it). The typography throughout is almost perfect, and 99% of the custom icons are tasteful and well finished (OK, I’ll ignore that cheesy Personalise icon in Settings).</p> <p class="p1">The HTC One’s UI manages that trick that every mobile interface designer aspires to: allow the user to forget the design. Every common job - check mail, send a tweet, find an appointment, launch a game - is about as easy as it’s possible to make it, helped no end by the aforementioned rapid performance.&nbsp;</p> <p class="p1">What about Blinkfeed, you cry? What lunacy inspired a team to give over an entire screen to an endless scrolling tiles of pre-selected news, without the ability to turn it off? OK, so it’s an issue. Even after living with it for three months, I can’t quite understand why HTC didn’t include an ‘off’ switch for Blinkfeed, so allowing One buyers the freedom to use the maximum of five available screens as they see fit.</p> <p class="p1">But then after three months of punishing a One every day, I’ve found myself regularly checking Blinkfeed, rather than opening Flipboard or Feedly (both of which I have installed), mostly because it’s… well, there, and easy.&nbsp;</p> <p class="p1">Eventually, I set my home screen as the middle of my maximum five screens, which means that Blinkfeed is on the far left - so only two quick swipes away. Which is actually quicker most of the time than launching an app.</p> <p class="p1">Yes, I’ve wasted a few hours tweaking Blinkfeed channels, and I wish there were more of them. But most days, at least in the way I have it set up, it’s out of the way enough to be painless, but there enough to be useful.</p> <p class="p1">There were quirks in the HTC One’s launcher at first. The device came to market with Android 4.1.2, overlaid with the firm’s revamped cut of the stock Android launcher, Sense 5. This included such maddening issues as the inability to remove an app from the shelf without a PhD (it was easy, by the way, you just needed to open the app drawer first, then drag the shelf app into it. Who knew?), and a app drawer that in its default state only offered a minimal number of apps per screen.</p> <p class="p1">But 90% of the HTC One’s usability quirks were squashed by the recent update to Android 4.2.2. Moving apps around is more intuitive now, and the update also brought such delights as quick access to settings from the notifications screen and, of course, lock screen widgets. &nbsp;</p> <p class="p1">(In case you're wondering, the default app drawer grid could be fixed from launch, simply by adjusting a setting under grid size).</p> <p class="p1"><strong>How to out-One the One?</strong>&nbsp;Tell your new smartphone’s marketing department that an entire screen given over to a feed reader is a bloody stupid idea. And if they really have to do it, include an off switch.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="htc one black" alt="htc one black" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/htc_one_black.jpg?1377759532" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> MAKE BATTERY TRAUMA A THING OF THE PAST </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The HTC One’s 2300mAh battery drains from 100% charge to 3% in 183 seconds flat, even with the screen off (it says in this trolling forum post, complete with accompanying, heavily photoshopped screenshots). Which is odd, because mine ends the working day with a healthy 65% charge.</p> <p class="p1">The fanatical end of the Android community, of which there are many, will tell you that flagship handsets either die in minutes or months - with nothing in between. And they have endless fake screenshots to prove it.&nbsp;</p> <p class="p1">The inconvenient truth, from some years of owning various Android handsets, is that tweaking application settings will do more than any amount of brightness adjustment or quasi-mystical battery manipulation to extend battery life.&nbsp;</p> <p class="p1">My One lasts a whole day, with charge showing between 50-70% by midnight (and I leave the house at 6.30am). I could go for two days as a survival test, but I can’t see why I would bother with the exercise: like most of the smartphone-owning human race now, I plug my phone in at night. But then, I don’t post dodgy screenshots showing my battery lasting 8 days and 11 hours.</p> <p class="p1">In case you’re wondering, those tweaked application settings that can save your battery usually include turning off Google+ notifications (sorry Google, but it has murdered every handset I’ve ever owned), working your way through Google’s maze of location settings and to turn most of them off, and not leaving the background sync on for every app I install (again, Google+ Auto Backup turns vampire at the drop of a hat).&nbsp;</p> <p class="p1">Oh, and if your battery’s still causing alarm, you can lose half an hour trying to stop Facebook’s fantabulous app from constantly sucking juice in the background: if you ever do find out how to do this, do share - 2bn Android users worldwide will buy you drinks and hero hats.</p> <p class="p1"><strong>How to out-One the One?</strong> Fit your newly designed handset with a 4060mAh monster, &nbsp;then create a custom screen that hand picks the on/off settings for the worst-offending apps. Make those people happy.</p> <p class="p1">I buy an HTC One running Android 4.1.2, then feel mildly robbed when the Galaxy S4 clumps into town wearing 4.2.2. Yes, I know, I know - it’s but a point increment in the software roadmap, a mere sliver of gravel on the development of a mobile operating system’s highway.</p> <p class="p1">But I still felt robbed. S4 owners could gloat over their superior settings screen in notifications. They had (hush at the back, there) home screen widgets. Yes. All I had was a beautifully engineered phone that worked like a dream.&nbsp;</p> <p class="p1">As it happens, the 4.2.2 update for the One magicked its way over the airwaves only a few weeks back - and the 415MB update was boringly painless. It’s almost as though (again, hush at the back) HTC had thoroughly tested it before releasing the software. I know. Insane stuff.</p> <p class="p1">But I think we can all see the direction of travel: Google has spread Android at a terrifying pace by letting manufacturers do what they want with the interface. And gosh, didn’t they take the brief to heart.</p> <p class="p1">But just lately, the core apps that define that Google experience have been appearing in the Play Store as stand-alone items. If you want your TouchWiz-ed S4 to look more ‘stock’, the Play Store is now your friend. And meanwhile, the whole noise around the stock Android / Nexus experience is getting louder by the day, aided by the looming <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/google/x-factor-why-you-should-be-excited-about-moto-x/feature" target="_blank">rebirth of Motorola</a>.</p> <p class="p1">So there’s every chance that in a surprisingly short period of time, the Sense 5 on my HTC One will signify that I have the ‘cheap’ cut of Android - at least in the eyes of my Moto X and Nexus 5-wielding chums. Perhaps that was part of HTC’s motive in launching the Google Play Edition in the US, giving the purists the option.</p> <p class="p1"><strong>How to out-One the One?</strong> Release big Android updates the day before Google announces them.&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="HTC One vs Samsung Galaxy S4" alt="HTC One vs Samsung Galaxy S4" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/htc-one-5.jpg?1377759532" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-7"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> GOING LOUD MATTERS - EVEN WITH A PHONE </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The HTC One has the best speakers on any smartphone, anywhere.</p> <p>And surprisingly, it does matter. If it is, then cheap marketing tricks work, at least on me. Sad confession time: I’ve contrived opportunities to make friends watch ‘Tube videos, just so that I can feel smug when they comment on the One’s sound. I know, I need help. But I have £50 riding on the fact that I’m not alone (and if you’re a One owner reading this, I dare you to deny that you’ve never done the same).</p> <p>In case you’re wondering, voice call quality is as good as music and movie soundtracks. On the whole, people tended to buy them, then told their friends how good the thing was. No contrived social distribution campaign, no hidden team of 10,000 paid ‘evangelists’ peppering forums with praise.&nbsp;</p> <p>For all the praise I’ve lavished on the One here, my particular form of OCD means I’ll be touting a Moto X in a few months. San Francisco-based industrial design studio responsible for the One’s hardware, tells us that the phone’s design sprang from three key principles; it had to be simple, crafted and human.</p> <p>So, simple. “In this increasingly dense media and information landscape that we live in, I think people are looking for products that are simple in their gesture and proposition,” says Zellweger. “What that means for the product is we want something that has simple, clean geometry to look at, as well as fewer part breaks, fewer elements. Really just only what's necessary on the product.”</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Mass Production </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>What about crafted? “It was really important for us to achieve something that feels like it was almost made by hand," says Zellweger. "Although it's a mass-produced product, it has that quality.”</p> <p>And the last one, human? “I think the important thing for us here is that although we're holding a piece of amazing modern machinery in our hands, it feels like it just belongs in your hand.”</p> <p>How did One &amp; Co. set about ticking these boxes? For simplicity, they decided upon an aluminium unibody so that there’d be very few visible “parts” on the phone’s exterior. Starting with a piece of aluminium, they co-inject a special kind of polycarbonate into channels to create the antenna; this plastic is melted together with the metal to create a single block. This block is then welded to another piece of aluminium and machined so that it appears to be a single, seamless body – run your fingers over it and you won’t feel a bump or step.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="HTC One" alt="HTC One" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/htc-one-main.jpg?1380489683" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Screen </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Not even the camera or stereo speaker grilles disrupt this seamless flow: the former is so thin that it sits totally within the body; the latter are so precisely machined that they feel more like a texture change than a surface change. And then there’s the screen, a piece of Gorilla Glass that appears to bleed over the One’s edges. Zellweger calls it an “endless screen”: “In order to achieve that, we had to come up with a new way to attach the glass to the rest of the metal frame. We were asked to put a lot of reinforcement around the screen, and in the end we were able to remove all these elements and just have the screen almost flow over the edge of the device.”</p> <p>There are other little touches of genius at work too, like the way the power button doubles as an IR window – again reducing the number of elements on the phone’s exterior.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="HTC One" alt="HTC One" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/htc-one-sketch-curve.jpg?1380489683" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="HTC One" alt="HTC One" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/HTC-One_Silver_3V_0.jpg?1380489683" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Ergonomics </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>It’s the sheer amount of metal used that ensures the HTC One hits its designers’ “crafted” mark. Because of the injection technique, the aluminium body itself becomes the antenna. “[The One] extends the expertise that we’ve had with metal over the years, starting with the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/review/htc-legend">HTC Legend</a>, and then continuing with a series of other products," says Zellweger. "I think that we’ve perfected it this time. Also we’re able to add more metal overall, more than anyone’s ever put on a phone.” Yes, not even Apple, erstwhile master of aluminium unibodies, has managed to pull off a smartphone as metal-dominated as the HTC One.</p> <p>And that final element, “human”? It’s about ergonomics. Yes, the One looks lovely – but if it feels like a brick in your hand all that’s for nothing. It had to feel comfortable to hold – and yet it still had to be thin. “We had to pick our battles,” says Zellweger. “We didn’t want to create something that felt like a blobject, or like a bar of soap; yes, it’s comfortable, but it’s not appropriate at all for what we’re doing here.”</p> <p>What One &amp; Co. did is give the one a curved, lofted surface on the back. “In order to achieve that, we had to reconfigure very fundamentally the way that components are laid out on the inside of the product. So there was a tremendous amount of pushing and pulling with our internal engineering team to achieve those thin sides.” The One, for example has a special battery that’s thinner in the middle.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="HTC One" alt="HTC One" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/htc-one-sketch-main.jpg?1380489683" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Future </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>This component wrangling meant the phone could taper at the edges – a curvature from left to right that makes it feel “right” in the user’s hand. “That bevelling helps you feel the edges less, and also to reduce the perceived thickness of that sidewall.”</p> <p>It all adds up to a phone that is by far the most desirable on the market: nothing can touch the HTC One when it comes to industrial design, build quality and engineering. That's why it sits proudly atop the Stuff <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/top-10s/smartphones">Smartphones Top 10</a>, having <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/video/reviews/samsung-galaxy-s4-vs-htc-one-vs-sony-xperia-z">trounced its Android rivals</a> – and why it's earned a place in the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/news/life-etc/stuff/july-issue-out-now">Stuff Cool List 2013</a>.</p> <p>And the most exciting part is that HTC is just getting started – with phones like the rumoured <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/news/phone/rumour-mill/htc-one-mini-rumours-surface">HTC One Mini</a> and <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/news/phone/rumour-mill/htc-t6-to-take-on-samsung-galaxy-note-3">HTC T6</a> set to build on the HTC One's design language. We’ll leave the final word to Zellweger: “This is a mile for us in terms of design; we’ve invested a lot into it in terms of the manufacturing processes, and we want to make sure that really haloes across the brand. You’re definitely going to see this design language stay and develop over the course of time.”</p> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/news/life-etc/stuff/july-issue-out-now">The Cool List is Stuff's annual round-up of the most exciting, most beautiful, most desirable and most innovative things in the world.
