The two combine to make it perfectly feasible to record incredibly distant objects or scenes without a tripod. The intelligence of the image stabilisation comes into play when you start panning and tracking fast-moving objects in the distance. Many rivals fall at this hurdle, correcting their image stabilisation in a series of painfully visible jerks, but the PJ530 remains calm and unflustered, seemingly locked onto its target.</p> <p>It&#39;s worth pushing up beyond the 30x optical zoom to the &quot;extended&quot; 60x zoom limit if you need to, even if it&#39;s only momentarily. You do lose some quality but often it&#39;s better to take that hit rather than trying to mess around with the footage in an editing app. Delve into the menus and you can active the 350x digital zoom, which sounds preposterous but is actually worth trying out.</p> <p>All of this makes the PJ530 well suited to capturing sports and live events, wildlife and various other remarkable sights and scenes you might stumble upon during your travels.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="You can push all the way up to 350x digital zoom if you dare" alt="Sony PJ530 zoom" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSC05237.JPG?1405525187" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="To be sure of quality images you can stick to the 60x zoom limit" alt="Sony PJ630 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSC05240.JPG?1405525187" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Sony PJ530 video quality </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>In good light, such as outdoors during the day, the video quality is excellent. There&#39;s an HDMI output next to the input for the projector, and if you&#39;re keen to hear exactly what sound the PJ350 is picking up you can plug in a pair of headphones via the 3.5mm output. If you&#39;d rather record your soundtrack from something other than the built-in 5.1 surround sound microphone set-up you can hook up a microphone or line-level source to the 3.5mm input. By default the audio recording level is set to Auto, which does a good job of adjusting the incoming volume on the fly but it can be switched to manual.</p> <p>On top you&#39;ll see another little hatch. Open this up to reveal a multi-accessory interface that makes it possible to attach one of a number of extras, including higher quality microphones and lights. There&#39;s Wi-Fi too, which works well enough for transferring movies and stills to a smartphone, or using your phone as a remote control. If you download Sony&#39;s PlayMemories software you can do wireless transfers to computers too, but unless you have no available USB slots it&#39;s much quicker and easier to plug in physically.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/action-cam/gopro-hero-3-silver-edition/review" target="_blank">GoPro Hero3+ Silver Edition review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The PJ530&#039;s connection options allow you to step up to serious shooting levels" alt="Sony PJ530 connections" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSC05242.JPG?1405525187" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Higher quality microphones and video lamps can be attached to the accessory port" alt="Sony PJ530 accessory port" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSC05243.JPG?1405525187" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Sony PJ530 verdict </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>If you feel the projector is a gimmick too far, by all means take a look at similarly-specced alternatives in the Sony range. But how many had an Android heart beating within?</p> <p><strong>Er&hellip; none?</strong><br />Exactly. The Odin projector by the oddly named Dos Owls is a miniature, battery-powered projector with quad-core internals capable of powering Android 4.4 KitKat completely independent of any other device.</p> <p>That means you can run Netflix, browse the web, play games and work on documents, using nothing but the projector itself.&nbsp;</p> <p>One yard from a wall will give you a 25in image, while 10 yards bumps that up to a whopping 250 inches.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s even got two 4W speakers, and two USB ports, making it a self-sufficient portable media powerhouse.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="480" mozallowfullscreen="" src="https://sketchfab.com/models/5d2e8aec3baf4623a1625db34f71225b/embed" webkitallowfullscreen="" width="640"></iframe></p> <p><strong>That&hellip; that actually does sound pretty useful. There&rsquo;s no official lumens figure given, and we have to admit, the videos we&rsquo;ve seen suggest that you&rsquo;ll need a dark room for an optimum viewing experience. The 854 x 480 resolution won&rsquo;t blow you away either, although a two hour cord-free battery life should be enough to stream a couple of episodes on Netflix before you need to recharge.</p> <p>Not the best projector specs in the land then, but this isn&rsquo;t exactly supposed to replace a high-end fridge-sized home cinema projector. And at either end there are sections that act as cabinets for your other electronics - think PS4, Blu-ray player, home cinema amp, etc.</p> <p>Although Sony wouldn&#39;t confirm it we&#39;re pretty confident that the system will be modular, so you can do without the speaker sections if you&#39;re connecting to an external system or add more of the component storage units if you&#39;ve got loads of sources.</p> <p>Essentially, it&#39;s all remarkably thoughtful, clever and neat, and we want it in our house right now. The only problem is the price - $30,000-$40,000. We&#39;re not just talking video, though - using an array of sensors built into the lamp it&#39;s actually possible to manipulate the interface so that you can look at photos, surf the web or check out any number of widgets. It&#39;s got to be the easiest and coolest way to check the news headlines while chowing down that we&#39;ve ever seen.</p> <p>We also saw a mirror that doubles-up as a display for news feeds, magazines and the like, and a pair of ceiling-mounted projectors that could create a sun-roof style vibe for your lounge. Best of all the devices could be synchronised to the same theme, whether that be a desert landscape or a tropical underwater vista, with the intention being to create a relaxing environment.</p> <p>Whether any of those extra gadgets ever make it to shops remains to be seen, but the creative thinking alone deserves a big round of applause.</p> <p><strong><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/ces-2013/ces-2014-biggest-stories-so-far/feature" target="_blank">CES 2014 - the biggest news so far, live from Las Vegas</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Sony Smart Life UX" alt="Sony Smart Life UX" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSC02691.JPG?1389612434" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Sony Smart Life UX" alt="Sony Smart Life UX" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSC02695.JPG?1389612434" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="4912" height="3264" title="Sony Smart Life UX" alt="Sony Smart Life UX" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSC02713.JPG?1389612434" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="1200" height="900" title="Sony Smart Life UX" alt="Sony Smart Life UX" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSC02706.JPG?1389612434" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 2014 CES Hot Stuff Award winner </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/ces-2014/2014-ces-hot-stuff-awards/feature" target="_blank">The Sony 4K Ultra Short-Throw Projector is one of our 2014 CES Hot Stuff Awards winners &ndash; click here to read about the rest</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sony/ces-2014/eyes-sonys-amazing-4k-short-throw-projector/news" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/sony/ces-2014/eyes-sonys-amazing-4k-short-throw-projector/news#comments 4K CES 2014 Projectors Sony Sat, 11 Jan 2014 04:24:22 +0000 Tom Parsons 1430995 at http://www.stuff.tv 4K at IFA 2013: all the highlights http://www.stuff.tv/ifa-2013/4k-ifa-2013-all-highlights/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> A look at the finest Ultra HD gear this year’s show had to offer </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="4K at IFA 2013: all the highlights" alt="4K at IFA 2013: all the highlights" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/LG_ULTRA_HD_OLED_TV_01.jpg?1386624512" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>Ultra HD video has been a major theme at this year&rsquo;s <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/ifa-2013">IFA</a>, with each of the major manufacturers pulling the wraps off at least one killer 4K-compatible product.
