Want compact dock convenience and the immersive sound of a 'proper' pair of speakers? Check out these Fidelio beauties

Philips Fidelio SoundSphere DS9800W review – intro

Business not your thing? Then these speakers, which look like the 'Yip Yip' aliens from Sesame Street, might be more to your taste. An upward-firing woofer flings sound outwards, and the tweeter sits above it on an isolated arm – Philips say they combine to disperse sound more effectively. Who cares about the science behind them though, when the end result looks this good...

Philips Fidelio SoundSphere DS9800W review – design and build

The speakers are actually made of wood that's covered in seven coats of lacquer to give it that glossy, greasy-finger-friendly finish.

Philips Fidelio SoundSphere DS9800W review – wireless dock

An iThing dock comes included, so you'll be able to charge your player while it's wirelessly squirting tunes into your living room. With built-in AirPlay tech, setup is as easy as your router will allow.

Philips Fidelio SoundSphere DS9800W review – sound quality

You'll be treated to a terrifically tight, weighty and fast sound that seems at odds with the SoundSpheres' bug-eyed looks. Songs have real gusto, but be careful with the volume if you're a fan of brass bands: the tweeters can get just a touch over-confident if you really push them.

Philips Fidelio SoundSphere DS9800W review – verdict

In a world awash with AirPlay-equipped docks, these SoundSpheres have created a niche for themselves by offering proper two-channel stereo output. Idiosyncratic looks ensure they'll stand out even further from the crowd and they sound great too.
