It allows the user to control functions of his or her Audi vehicle: the door can be unlocked via NFC, for instance. It won&rsquo;t yet let you call your self-driving Audi back to you &ndash; but that&rsquo;s something that can be added in the future, eh?</p> <p>The watch seems to have its own cellular phone signal, which suggests you&rsquo;ll be able to make calls directly from it, without the need for a paired smartphone, and its backplate reveals that it&rsquo;s water resistant and constructed of stainless steel and sapphire crystal. Take that <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-iwatch/review">Apple Watch</a>, which reportedly only lasts for one full day before needing a top-up.</p> <p>The MB Chronowig is designed to work with plenty of devices too - it&#39;s compatible with iPhones from the iPhone 4S up and Androids running Android 4.3 and newer.</p> <p>As well as looking like a normal watch, the Chronowig should also feel like one: it uses normal watch-style straps in leather, nylon or rubber, and from the pics we&#39;ve seen it doesn&rsquo;t look to be any thicker than some metal wrist-burdens that don&rsquo;t offer any phone smarts at all.</p> <p>After all the fuss about whether the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-iphone-6/review">iPhone 6</a>&nbsp;would get a Sapphire glass display, you&nbsp;may also be interested to know that the HP watch has a Sapphire Crystal top plate: it&rsquo;s harder than nails. Well, the MB Chronowig is smart, but not that smart.</p> <p>It doesn&rsquo;t run <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/google/android-wear/review">Android Wear</a> or another known operating system, but instead seems to offer fairly basic smart features that all take place using Bluetooth. The front&#39;s not even a touchscreen &ndash; can a smartwatch already be retro?</p> <p>You get email alerts, calendar notifications and can control music from the watch. But you&rsquo;re not going to be playing games, measuring your heart rate or tracking your runs. There are 10 smart features in total, just a fraction of what&#39;s possible with most other smartwatches. Simple is the order of the day.</p> <p>It does have a share tracker function, though, which seems apt because this watch does not come cheap. It&rsquo;s expected to cost between US$350 and US$650.</p> <p>And making a UK conversion is a bit pointless when, with just 300 MB Chronowig watches being made, they may not be too easy to get hold of anyway. Still, check out the <a href="http://www.gilt.com/sale/men/mm/michael-bastian-x-hewlettpackard-1">Gilt website</a> from November 7 if you fancy a particularly pricey stop-gap until the Apple Watch turns up next year.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-iwatch/review">Hands on with the Apple Watch</a></strong></p> <p><iframe frameborder="0" height="180" src="http://pages.haymarket.com/stuff_signup/enews_embed" width="300"></iframe></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> http://www.stuff.tv/hp/hp-s-first-smartwatch-offers-more-style-iwatch/news#comments Android Wear HP Smartwatch Wearable tech Mon, 03 Nov 2014 14:58:13 +0000 Andrew Williams 1452076 at http://www.stuff.tv Lenovo slides into wearable tech with the SW-B100 smartband http://www.stuff.tv/smartwatch/lenovo-quietly-gets-wearable-tech-sw-b100-smartband/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Fitness tracker outed on Lenovo store, with specs but no price tag </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="567" height="425" title="Lenovo slides into wearable tech with the SW-B100 smartband" alt="Lenovo slides into wearable tech with the SW-B100 smartband" src="/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/lenovo%20smartband_0.jpg" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>It&#39;s no longer a case of who&#39;s getting in on wearable tech but who isn&#39;t &ndash; and Lenovo is no longer content to be the latter.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/erna-mahyuni" title="View user profile.">Erna Mahyuni</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The band is available in two colours: blue and orange. Think Fallout 3&#39;s Pip-boy module running Android 4.4 KitKat, and you&#39;ve got the right idea.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/esat-dedezade" title="View user profile.">Esat Dedezade</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>So, we&#39;ve established that it&#39;s big. As in, Big. But what else has the Rufus Cuff brought to the already crowded smartwatch table, besides its own gravitational field?</p> <p>Well, it&#39;s got access to the full Google Play Store for starters. Apps, games, music, movies - the whole lot. That&#39;s an impressive feat for a smartwatch, and it&#39;s all thanks to the phone-like size of the screen, which will actually allow you to play games and use apps without obscuring everything with your fingers.</p> <p>The larger screen also means you&#39;ve got access to a full Android keyboard, making this the first smartwatch you can actually use to respond to emails and messages with. A full web browser also means you can browse the wonders of the interwebs straight from your wrist.</p> <p>Naturally it can also keep track of your steps and other exercise stats like speed and distance, and it&#39;s even got a front-facing camera and microphone for video calls.</p> <p>Chuck in 16GB of storage, an LED flashlight, forgotten phone reminders and iOS and android compatibility, and we&#39;ve got ourselves one of the most fully featured wearable devices around.</p> <p>Sure you can&#39;t actually make calls on it independently of your phone as it lacks a SIM slot, but built-in Wi-Fi takes care of emails and browsing even when you&#39;re not paired up with your smartphone.</p> <p>Plus you&#39;ll probably feel ridiculous enough playing Candy Crush on it as it is, let alone holding it up to your face Dick Tracy style. Do you actually enjoy making babies cry? Of course not.</p> <p>The Rufus Cuff can currently be snapped up on indiegogo for the earlybird price of US$230. Its creators are looking for a substantial US$250,000 total to make it a mass-produced reality, so if you want your wearables to go all out then you&#39;d better show your support.</p> <p><strong>READ Tracking of runs, swims and cycles makes it great for triathletes in training, but the lack of a dedicated triathlon mode means it&rsquo;s more awkward than it should be for actual races. The accelerometer-based swimming mode can also be a bit patchy. But it lasts for days, the clear display gives stats at a glance and the &lsquo;training partner&rsquo; pacing function is brilliant. Adidas&rsquo; MiCoach app is great, but it&rsquo;s the only software the Smart Run talks to. Shame it doesn&rsquo;t link to MyFitnessPal and other heaA pulth trackers, too. The beltless heart-rate monitoring is great, too, but all this comes at a cost. For starters, it&rsquo;s bulky &ndash; definitely too big to wear all the time. Battery life also takes a hit: all too often we&rsquo;d get ready for a run only to find it&rsquo;d died. Even in non-GPS mode it won&rsquo;t last a full day. What&rsquo;s more, we had to stand around in the cold while it took a leisurely 90 seconds to pick up GPS, compared to a speedy sub-15 seconds by the TomTom and Garmin.
