Think Fallout 3&#39;s Pip-boy module running Android 4.4 KitKat, and you&#39;ve got the right idea.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/esat-dedezade" title="View user profile.">Esat Dedezade</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>So, we&#39;ve established that it&#39;s big. As in, Big. But what else has the Rufus Cuff brought to the already crowded smartwatch table, besides its own gravitational field?</p> <p>Well, it&#39;s got access to the full Google Play Store for starters. Apps, games, music, movies - the whole lot. That&#39;s an impressive feat for a smartwatch, and it&#39;s all thanks to the phone-like size of the screen, which will actually allow you to play games and use apps without obscuring everything with your fingers.</p> <p>The larger screen also means you&#39;ve got access to a full Android keyboard, making this the first smartwatch you can actually use to respond to emails and messages with. A full web browser also means you can browse the wonders of the interwebs straight from your wrist.</p> <p>Naturally it can also keep track of your steps and other exercise stats like speed and distance, and it&#39;s even got a front-facing camera and microphone for video calls.</p> <p>Chuck in 16GB of storage, an LED flashlight, forgotten phone reminders and iOS and android compatibility, and we&#39;ve got ourselves one of the most fully featured wearable devices around.</p> <p>Sure you can&#39;t actually make calls on it independently of your phone as it lacks a SIM slot, but built-in Wi-Fi takes care of emails and browsing even when you&#39;re not paired up with your smartphone.</p> <p>Plus you&#39;ll probably feel ridiculous enough playing Candy Crush on it as it is, let alone holding it up to your face Dick Tracy style. Do you actually enjoy making babies cry? Of course not.</p> <p>The Rufus Cuff can currently be snapped up on indiegogo for the earlybird price of US$230. Its creators are looking for a substantial US$250,000 total to make it a mass-produced reality, so if you want your wearables to go all out then you&#39;d better show your support.</p> <p><strong>READ Tracking of runs, swims and cycles makes it great for triathletes in training, but the lack of a dedicated triathlon mode means it&rsquo;s more awkward than it should be for actual races. The beltless heart-rate monitoring is great, too, but all this comes at a cost. For starters, it&rsquo;s bulky &ndash; definitely too big to wear all the time. Battery life also takes a hit: all too often we&rsquo;d get ready for a run only to find it&rsquo;d died. Even in non-GPS mode it won&rsquo;t last a full day. That's not a patch on <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-gear/samsung-galaxy-gear/review">Samsung's glorious 278ppi Galaxy Gear</a> screen, mind you, so icons, text and yes, the time, will all look a bit fuzzy and jagged to nerd eyes.&nbsp; It's easy to forgive, considering the price difference: £130 to the Sammy's £300.</p> <p>Straight on, colours are vibrant and it's a clear, bright display. Fingerprints blight it, though, and viewing angles aren't great either: if you tilt the watchface away from your body, it starts to look like an overexposed photo.&nbsp;</p> <p>Outdoors, the low-power mode provides a neat, subdued watchface that's easy to read in direct sunlight too. We still think the less colourful but gloriously readable Pebble display has the SmartWatch 2's beat in most usage scenarios.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Sony SmartWatch 2 screen " alt="Sony SmartWatch 2 screen " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-smartwatch-2-hands-on-8.png?1396863869" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Genuinely smart skills </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>With a mini icon grid reminiscent of smartphone homescreens, the SmartWatch 2 is easy to navigate. Unlike the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-gear/samsung-galaxy-gear/review">Galaxy Gear</a>, you won't find yourself scrolling round and round the full screen icons trying to find the pedometer.&nbsp;</p> <p>When your phone is MIA, all you can do with the SW2 is read notifications that have already synced, set alarms, use the torchlight (don't bother with this) and, of course, check the time.&nbsp;</p> <p>But when your smartphone gets involved, the SmartWatch 2 is the most informative wearable we've tested so far. Once you've downloaded the right apps (see boxout below), the buzz, tilt 'n' check routine when you get an email will become second nature.&nbsp;</p> <p>The <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/pebble-smartwatch/review">Pebble</a> is faster (texts somehow appear on the watch before they do on your phone), but the Sony ups the ante by allowing you to scroll through previous notifications by swiping downwards at any time (on the Pebble they disappear into the ether at a button press), and is shows more information on one screen. For example, your WhatsApp message is displayed in its entirety, not just who sent it and the name of the group.&nbsp;</p> <p>However, there's lots of room for improvement. We'd like icons on the Facebook app to show what's a message sent to us and what's just a status update. Maybe we have blathering friends, but email previews are so short as to be basically useless. And Twitter needs more settings, so we can get a buzz for interactions and mentions but not tweets by the 8,000 people we follow.&nbsp;</p> <p>Speaking of apps, there's about 110 to peruse right now: a pretty impressive selection from the insanely useful to the wacky. That's less than Sony's promised 400, but more than is available for the Galaxy Gear at time of writing.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Sony SmartWatch 2 review " alt="Sony SmartWatch 2 review " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-smartwatch-2-hands-on-13.png?1396863869" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Sony SmartWatch 2 review" alt="Sony SmartWatch 2 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-smartwatch-2-hands-on-4.png?1396863869" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Sony SmartWatch 2 review" alt="Sony SmartWatch 2 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-smartwatch-2-review-hands-on-1.png?1396863869" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="1200" height="900" title="Sony SmartWatch 2 review maps " alt="Sony SmartWatch 2 review maps " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-smartwatch-2-review-maps-app.png?1396863869" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Sony SmartWatch 2: the apps to download first </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>1. <strong>WatchIt! </strong>Ignore the SmartWatch apps asking for your money to sync with WhatsApp. Get WatchIt! for free and it will show any notifications that pop up as banners on your phone including WhatsApp, Google+ and Hangouts chat. Before it will work, it requires turning on access for the app in your smartphone's accessibility settings.&nbsp;</p> <p>2. <strong>Endomondo</strong>&nbsp;The SmartWatch 2 is not a standalone GPS running watch, but glancing at it during a jog does save time as you can keep your phone in your pocket, cutting the faff. We used it with Endomondo, as it's a reliable, feature-heavy app and service, and the SW2's display shows time, distance, mph and heart rate (if you pay for this). Sony offers a 14-day free trial to Runtastic Pro Gold (£4.29 app) with an activation code in the pack of the SmartWatch 2 active edition.&nbsp;</p> <p>3.&nbsp;<strong>GPS Maps for SmartWatch </strong>Now we're talking. It relies on your smartphone's GPS but if you're cycling, motorbiking or just moving your legs really fast this is a great, free app. It's a little slow but it zooms in and out (via the corner controls) easily enough and marks your location with a red arrow.&nbsp;</p> <p>4. <strong>Slideshow</strong>&nbsp;Pebble's no good for viewing photos but the Sony is with its bright, clear images. We'd like to be able to navigate our phone's gallery to find individual snaps, but for now, we'll make do with a slideshow of recent photos – including what your mates have sent you on WhatsApp. So, you know, be careful.&nbsp;</p> <p>5. <strong>Calendar reminder</strong>&nbsp;One of the SmartWatch apps we glanced at the most. It's simple enough and we really did use it in meetings when it would have been rude to unlock our phone and swipe to the calendar widget. Smartwatch win.&nbsp;</p> <p>6. <strong>WebBrowser </strong>Hey, you've just bought a smartwatch. You want some gimmicks. This is pretty slow to load, has a painfully old-school Nokia-style keyboard layout and is juddery to scroll. But you can Google stuff on your watch if you really want, and freak non-techy friends out with your wrist computer.&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Power Up (Thumbs Down) </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Ah, it was all going so well: the apps, the notifications. But the SmartWatch 2 requires plenty of patience: patience we just don't have. First up, the Bluetooth connection often drops out – but since that's the case for all the smartwatches we've been wearing lately, it's not a deal-breaker.&nbsp;</p> <p>The glitches, however, almost are. Icons greying out, the homescreen going into low power mode for no reason, a line of static-style, multi-coloured pixels appearing, a lack of responsiveness when scrolling and swiping. This is when the Pebble's lack of touchscreen starts to look very appealing.&nbsp;</p> <p>And why have the notifications disappeared to be replaced by blank Jan 01 bars, Sony? The Pebble's just told us we have a meeting in five minutes while you have been busily crashing and burning. The Endomondo app, as much as we liked it, was one of the biggest culprits for causing the SW2 to go into meltdown, and not even longpressing the power button saves it.&nbsp;</p> <p>It took a few days for our SmartWatch 2 unit to get into this state of disrepair, but with only about 20 apps on there and with plenty of rejuicing/recuperating time, we hoped for better. If Sony can update the SmartWatch 2's software to make the experience of using it plain sailing, it'll earn at least one more star.&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Sony SmartWatch 2 review in use " alt="Sony SmartWatch 2 review in use " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-smartwatch-2-hands-on-10.png?1396863869" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Sony SmartWatch 2 review in use " alt="Sony SmartWatch 2 review in use " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-smartwatch-2-hands-on-11.png?1396863869" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Sony SmartWatch 2 review in use " alt="Sony SmartWatch 2 review in use " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-smartwatch-2-hands-on-12.png?1396863869" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-6"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Sensible battery life </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>What a relief to find that when the SW2 buzzes to say it's down to 15% battery, you can simply grab a microUSB cable to recharge. Compared with the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-gear/samsung-galaxy-gear/review">Galaxy Gear's</a> bespoke charging cradle, this is fantastic news.&nbsp;</p> <p>Battery life is much better than the Gear too – we charged it three times in the space of just over a week, but we reckon when we're not testing it, twice a week will suffice. Longevity-wise it sits smack bang in the middle of the Galaxy Gear (1-2 days max) and the saintly <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/pebble-smartwatch/review">Pebble</a>, which lasted all week on a single charge.&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Sony SmartWatch 2 battery life " alt="Sony SmartWatch 2 battery life " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-smartwatch-2-hands-on-15.png?1396863869" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-7"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Verdict </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>As a concept, Sony's SmartWatch 2 seems to tread a fine line between the simple (like the Pebble) and the overblown and tricksy (like the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-gear/samsung-galaxy-gear/review">Galaxy Gear</a>). The design is solid, if a little drab-retro for our liking, the screen is a useful size and battery life is good enough to keep us using the device. It focuses on being a second screen to your super-capable Android phone, and doesn't try to replicate what it can do. That's to be applauded.&nbsp;</p> <p>But in order to adorn millions of wrists, it needs to at least approach the reliability of a real watch, and it needs a few more useful apps. The basics such as Spotify would be nice, but it'd be better still if Sony pushed the boat out with something that allowed you to use its NFC to make mobile payments.&nbsp;</p> <p>Right now, the most reliable smartwatch (as well as being the cheapest, longest-lasting, easiest to read outdoors and actually waterproof) is still the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/pebble-smartwatch/review">Pebble</a>.&nbsp;But if you want an LCD screen, the best third-party smartwatch app store and simple charging, the SmartWatch 2 is just about worth your patience.&nbsp;</p> <p>Words: <a href="https://plus.google.com/100316166955509219073/posts">Sophie Charara&nbsp;</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Sony SmartWatch 2 review verdict versus Pebble versus Galaxy Gear " alt="Sony SmartWatch 2 review verdict versus Pebble versus Galaxy Gear " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-smartwatch-2-hands-on-10-group.png?1396863869" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Sony SmartWatch 2 review verdict " alt="Sony SmartWatch 2 review verdict " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-smartwatch-2-hands-on-3.png?1396863869" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-review-rating"><legend>Review Rating</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 0 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-verdict"> <div class="field-label">Verdict:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Good battery life, great apps and notifications and all-Android compatibility, but the SmartWatch 2 needs a reliability boost</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-preview"> <div class="field-label">Preview:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Disabled </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-carousel-item"><legend>Carousel Extras</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-text field-field-carousel-item-title"> <div class="field-label">Carousel item title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Sony SmartWatch 2 review </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-carousel-item-standfirst"> <div class="field-label">Carousel item standfirst:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Can Sony&#039;s third stab at intelligent wristwear take on the mighty Pebble? Only one button (for power) graces the clutter-free chassis, and we’re rather taken by the four corner screws that have been left visible.</p> <p>Its 1.63in 320x320 Super AMOLED display won’t win any resolution contests with its 278ppi figure, but it's more than sharp enough for a watch. You might notice that text and icons aren't quite as sharp as you're used to (especially if you’re lucky enough to have been spoiled by the multitude of superb 1080p smartphones now available), but given that the Gear is meant to act as a secondary screen, we don’t think that’s a problem.&nbsp;</p> <p>The strap is rubber with a metal clasp, and it’s easily adjustable before clicking securely into place. It also houses the 1.9MP camera that’s present as a fairly inconspicuous bump on our review model, with the black circular lens blending in with the black strap.</p> <p>It'll stand out a lot more on the more vibrant straps, though, and you'll probably fool one or two observant commuters into believing that you're an M16 agent. First off, as with most smartwatches, the Gear needs to be connected to a smartphone if you want it to be, well, smart.</p> <p>The problem is that right now the Galaxy Note 3 is the only smartphone that's compatible with the Gear. Samsung’s working to rectify that with an update to the Galaxy S4 by the end of October, plus similar updates for the S3 and Note 2 promised by the end of year, but for now it’s Note 3 or bust.</p> <p>Once you fire the Gear up for the first time you're met with very basic on-screen instructions that tell you to encase it in a very unattractive, bulky plastic case that clips around the watch face. <br />The plastic case/cradle (or the Gear's ugly sister, Big Bertha as we've taken to calling it) houses an NFC module, and is required if you want to automate the Bluetooth pairing of the Gear to your smartphone via NFC, making for a speedier first connection – at least in theory.</p> <p>In reality, it's a very clunky method, and doesn't exactly form the first impression expected from a supposedly cutting edge piece of 2013 tech. By the time you clip the case on and faff around with the Gear's strap to ensure a decent back-to-back connection with your smartphone, you'll realise that it's a lot easier just to pair up with Bluetooth devices the old fashioned way, with a quick passcode confirmation.</p> <p>Once it's connected your phone will automatically download and install the Gear app, which can be accessed at any time from the phone's notification menu. The app let's you easily manage your Gear by changing its theme, installing apps and managing notifications.</p> <p>Once you've done all that then you can put Big Bertha to rest and never have to worry about seeing her ugly plastic mug again.</p> <p>Oh wait, no you can't. </p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Gear comes with bulky plastic case" alt="Gear comes with bulky plastic case" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN3203.JPG?1396863882" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Gear comes with bulky plastic case" alt="Gear comes with bulky plastic case" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN3206.JPG?1396863882" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Samsung Galaxy Gear Review" alt="Samsung Galaxy Gear Review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN3205.JPG?1396863882" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Charging </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>If you’re assuming there’s a microUSB ingeniously hidden underneath a flap on the Gear’s body, you’re sadly mistaken. It turns out Big Bertha has a secondary function, and that is to clip onto the Gear and charge it via the metal charging pins. Without the ugly and fiddly plastic cradle, there is no power.</p> <p>Most of the time it won't be a problem. You'll be going to bed knowing that while you sleep, the Gear will be uglier until you take it off its charger in the morning - not exactly the end of the world. But while you're out and about or if you find yourself stranded with power running low, you'll be flat out of luck unless you decide to lug the cradle around with you. You can also download more designs from Samsung’s Gear section of the app store, but there's not much of a selection available at the moment.</p> <p>A flick of the wrist automatically turns the Gear's screen on for a moment so you can glance at the time, but while the accelerometer does a decent job of turning the display on most of the time, it’s not perfect – a number of times we found ourselves shaking our wrists to awaken the Gear's screen but achieving nothing more than looking as though we were swatting away hordes of invisible hornets.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Galaxy Gear Review pairs with Galaxy Note 3" alt="Galaxy Gear Review pairs with Galaxy Note 3" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN3177.JPG?1396863882" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Notifications and Messaging </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Notifications are a smartwatch's bread and butter, and the Galaxy Gear handles them well – at least for the most part. You can customise the information you want to see, and we opted to only receive texts and phone call notifications to prevent the poor thing from catching fire from our constantly hammered Stuff inbox.</p> <p>The Gear's Notification feature is extremely useful for those times when you can't slip the over-sized Note 3 out of your pocket, such as when you're dashing for a train or when you don't want to appear rude at dinner – although there’s always the possibility that the person you’re with might think you’re checking your watch through boredom, which is perhaps not the best signal to be sending out on something like a date.</p> <p>You can read messages in their entirety and choose to open them up on your phone so that you can respond instantly, craft a reply via S Voice, or ignore them if they're not important.<br />It's not all perfect, though. On some occasions there are delays of up to 20 seconds between the Note 3 receiving a message and the Gear notification pushing through. We'd also like to have the option to delete messages directly from the Gear itself.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Galaxy Gear sends notifications" alt="Galaxy Gear sends notifications" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN3199.JPG?1396863882" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Gear lets you choose to open messages on your phone" alt="Gear lets you choose to open messages on your phone" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN3198.JPG?1396863882" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-6"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> S Voice and Voice Memo </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>After nattering away with Siri and Google's voice recognition software for quite some time now, our expectations for perfect voice recognition software are pessimistically low, and S Voice on the Gear proves that our glass-half-empty outlook is justified.<br />While it recognises basic commands such as “call home' or “open music player” for the most part, dictating anything more than a simple text message usually results in frustrating errors and miss-heard words, and lots of swearing.</p> <p>Still, it's not as though you'll be planning to construct essay-like replies on a smartwatch, and for basic tasks such as short messages, setting alarms and checking up on the weather, S Voice delivers most of the time, albeit sometimes rather slowly. <br />How you feel about barking commands at your wrist in the middle of a high street is a different issue, of course – sci-fi fans may well get-off on living out their Star Trek fantasies, but we suspect most people will be a bit self-conscious about the whole thing.</p> <p>You can also record voice memos, which are then saved to your phone. It's honestly not as bad as you might imagine. Its 800MHz processor, coupled with 512MB of RAM, is enough to keep things running very smoothly, and we didn't encounter any problems or crashes during use. That's a welcome relief, as we remember experiencing lag and slowdown with Gear sample units at IFA.</p> <p>Usability-wise, the Gear takes a little getting used to. Swiping down from the main watch screen opens up the camera, while swiping down in any open app/menu acts like a back button.</p> <p>Swiping up from the main screen brings up the dialler, and we wish we could customise this to bring the music controls up instead as it’s a feature that’s likely to get much more use. You can at least customise the power button double-tap, which by default activates S Voice.</p> <p>A long-press of the power button brings up the power options as well as vibrate and outdoor mode options, the latter of which instantly cranks up the brightness for better visibility in sunlight. While these are useful, we think it's a big oversight for Samsung not to display the battery level in this menu.</p> <p>Swiping through the menus and apps is a bit of a pain, with multiple swipes and taps required to get anywhere, and that's what you have to do each time you want to check the battery level. <br />While you can rearrange the order of the menu icons from the Gear app, you can't do it on the Gear itself, which is another annoyance.
