It&rsquo;s a strong start.&nbsp;</p> <p>The big question for Pebble&rsquo;s founder and CEO then, is this: is he going to beat Google&rsquo;s wearable platform or join it?</p> <p>&ldquo; Will we be building an Android Wear device? From what we&rsquo;ve read about Android Wear and from talking to people, it looks like you have to run Android on the watch, that&rsquo;s one of the requirements. And we do not run Android on Pebble. At the moment I can only say that we&rsquo;re building our own OS and constantly evaluating the possibilities. Increased awareness in the broader developer community is going to be excellent for us.&quot;</p> <p>Pebble might be sticking with its own platform, but did Google approach the makers of the smartwatch to bring them into the Android Wear fold?</p> <p>&ldquo;I can&rsquo;t comment on that,&rdquo; says Migicovsky. &ldquo; Our initial inclination is that the vision and the direction that we put down is the one we&rsquo;ll be following. Pebble has the ability to be used on both iOS and Android, which is very important. It has the simplicity factor which lends itself very well to people picking it up and starting to use it. What&rsquo;s especially cool is that you&rsquo;re using it for some of the key things like music control or notifications &ndash;&nbsp;and after that, you start discovering all these other cool things Pebble can do.&rdquo;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The Pebble line up: Steel and the original plastic Pebble " alt="The Pebble line up: Steel and the original plastic Pebble " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/pebble-steel-and-original-slant.png?1396754278" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="LG&#039;s G Watch running Android Wear " alt="LG&#039;s G Watch running Android Wear " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/lg-g-watch_1_0.jpg?1396754278" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="769" height="577" title="The round Moto 360 smartwatch looks stunning " alt="The round Moto 360 smartwatch looks stunning " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/moto-360-front_0.jpg?1396754278" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Building a watch as gorgeous as the concepts </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The internet agrees that Pebble Steel is the most watch-like smartwatch ever and the first many people would consider actually wearing. You can recognise a Pebble. It makes it really easy for me to know who to go up and talk to.&nbsp;More importantly you can change the watchface to change the look and feel of the watch when it&rsquo;s on.&quot;</p> <p>Would he consider partnering with fashion brands or watch makers? &quot;It&#39;s a possibility, definitely. We recognise that there&rsquo;s this infinite assortment of individual tastes and preferences and we can&rsquo;t fill them all. We know our smart technology is the best and we want to give more people access to it. So we&rsquo;ll make decisions like that to get us in front of more and more people.&nbsp; If someone wants to glue diamonds to it, I can guarantee someone could sell it. We are probably not going to be the ones to do that.&nbsp;</p> <p>&quot; We&rsquo;re working on all fronts to fulfil the vision of an all-screen watchface, it&rsquo;s something we&rsquo;re always pressing. The cool thing is that we have a Bluetooth low energy radio that right now is talking to the phone but in the near future will be able to talk to other devices as well. A Bluetooth heart-rate monitor or your bicycle power meter or a little external GPS.&quot;</p> <p>The other elephant in the wearable tech room, of course, is Google Glass.&nbsp;Migicovsky&#39;s not fazed by the smart specs, though. &quot;I&rsquo;ve tried voice control with Google Glass. But I think the technology&rsquo;s got a little way to grow. We&rsquo;re one of the only companies in the world working on a true platform and operating system that&rsquo;s custom designed for wearables from the ground up. I&rsquo;m looking forward to seeing how we can grow that in the next year, two years and five years all the way to the point where our computers are embedded in our skulls.</p> <p>&quot; The focus is on the platform. How do we encourage and incentivise developers to build on top of Pebble? How do we monitor how people are using it and use that in our marketing? There&rsquo;s thousands of these apps [2300 to be exact] so which ones cause people to become enamoured with Pebble?&rdquo; &nbsp;</p> <p>Pebble&rsquo;s most popular apps are the Modern watchface, an analogue face which shows the date and weather, and Smartwatch+, a bundle of weather, Find my Phone, Bitcoin and stocks info for iOS. The official app store is just three months old but it has bags of potential.</p> <p>&ldquo;A lot of the apps I was dreaming about have already been made,&quot; he notes. &quot; There&rsquo;s an app for Pebble that tells you where the nearest City Bike is in San Francisco called Share a Bike. It just makes sense, that&rsquo;s what I want to see on my wrist.&nbsp; We&rsquo;re going to be an active player in the smart home space. We have some Hue lightbulbs in the office, it&rsquo;s fun to see people play around with those. I have Nest at home so I can change the temperature from my desk. It&rsquo;s interesting when you&rsquo;re outside the home too, being able to check what&rsquo;s going on.</p> <p>&quot;I view Pebble as somewhat of a niche product. But it&rsquo;s a mass niche product. Someone may use Pebble because there&rsquo;s a great app in beta called <a href="http://www.swimiomotion.com/" target="_blank">SwimIO</a> that classifies which stroke you&rsquo;re doing and counts the number of strokes and laps without a phone, on the watch itself. Pebble is not a swim watch, it&rsquo;s a smartwatch that runs a swim watch app. For someone who swims, it&rsquo;s immensely useful. For someone who loves notifications, it&rsquo;s immensely useful. That&rsquo;s why the platform is going to take off.&rdquo;&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/pebble/pebble-steel/review" target="_blank">Pebble Steel review</a></strong></p> <p>&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="SwimIO app for Pebble " alt="SwimIO app for Pebble " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/pebble-pool.jpg?1396754278" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Changing Philips Hue lightbulbs with Huebble " alt="Changing Philips Hue lightbulbs with Huebble " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/pebble-steel-review-huebble_0.JPG?1396754278" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Pebble&#039;s app store on iOS " alt="Pebble&#039;s app store on iOS " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/pebble-steel-review-app-store-1.JPG?1396754278" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/pebble-ceo-eric-migicovsky-we-know-our-smart-technology-best/feature" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/pebble-ceo-eric-migicovsky-we-know-our-smart-technology-best/feature#comments Pebble Wearable tech Sat, 05 Apr 2014 14:07:27 +0000 Sophie Charara 1434847 at http://www.stuff.tv Video: Pebble Steel review – the best smartwatch yet http://www.stuff.tv/pebble/video-pebble-steel-review-best-smartwatch-yet/video <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Equally fashionable and functional, the successor to the most successful smartwatch to date takes wearable tech beyond the gimmicks we&#039;ve seen so far </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Video: Pebble Steel review – the best smartwatch yet" alt="Video: Pebble Steel review – the best smartwatch yet" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/Screen%20Shot%202014-04-05%20at%2014.23.37.png?1396753839" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper brightcove-player-wrapper"> <script language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript" src="http://admin.brightcove.com/js/BrightcoveExperiences.js"></script> <script src="http://admin.brightcove.com/js/APIModules_all.js"></script> <div class="brightcove-player"> <object id="myExperience-3433201048001" class="BrightcoveExperience"> <param name="bgcolor" value="#000000" /> <param name="playerID" value="" /> <param name="playerKey" value="AQ~~,AAAAEgPmGlk~,Fzd-TvXcznw-P3piHaryQBMeIzWITldz" /> <param name="isVid" value="true" /> <param name="isUI" value="true" /> <param name="dynamicStreaming" value="true" /> <param name="@videoPlayer" value="3433201048001" /> <param name="autoStart" value="" /> <param name="htmlFallback" value="true" /> <param name="includeAPI" value="true" /> <param name="templateLoadHandler" value="brightcoveTemplateLoaded" /> <param name="width" value="640px" /> <param name="height" value="360px" /> </object> <!-- This script tag will cause the Brightcove Players defined above it to be created as soon as the line is read by the browser. For students, designers and media types, it&rsquo;s a tidy retro chic statement watch. But for normal people who wear suits and go to meetings that plastic design was never going to cut it.</p> <p>Enter, Pebble Steel. It&rsquo;s not heart-stoppingly gorgeous but it doesn&rsquo;t need to be. This is a sturdy, stylish (still retro) design in either &lsquo;Steel&rsquo; silver or matte black, and its got a pleasantly curved, Gorilla Glass-coated screen. In short, this the most discreet smartwatch you can wear.</p> <p>It looks like a watch, it feels like a watch. Seriously, we&rsquo;re disappointed with the lack of attention it&rsquo;s been getting.</p> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/pebble/pebble-steel/gallery?viewid=113942" target="_blank">CHECK OUT OUR FULL PEBBLE STEEL GALLERY HERE</a></p> <p>And plenty stays the same. There&rsquo;s still no touchscreen and we marginally prefer the Pebble&rsquo;s old, supremely clickable plastic buttons, but for the sake of looks, these new metal ones win us round. It&rsquo;s still waterproof too, so there&rsquo;s no panicking at the mere mention of rain.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s also still comfortable enough to wear. And we mean all day, everyday - unlike the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-gear/samsung-galaxy-gear/review" target="_blank">Galaxy Gear</a> with its rigid band and heavy case. It&rsquo;s not quite as light as the<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/pebble-smartwatch/review" target="_blank"> barely-there original</a>, at 56g, but the Steel&rsquo;s still lighter than most regular timepieces. Switch out the leather strap for metal with a tiny screwdriver and it&rsquo;s still only 99g - nice.</p> <p>One warning for watch nerds: the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/pebble-smartwatch/review" target="_blank">cheaper Pebble&rsquo;s</a> a bit more free and easy when it comes to straps, playing nice with any regular watch band, but the Pebble has a toothed design that will require third parties to make straps specifically for the watch. Chances are they will.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Pebble Steel review" alt="Pebble Steel review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/pebble-steel-review-verdict.JPG?1395230258" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Pebble Steel review" alt="Pebble Steel review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/pebble-steel-review-back-strap.JPG?1395230258" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Pebble Steel review" alt="Pebble Steel review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/pebble-steel-review-metal-on-arm.jpg?1395230258" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="1200" height="900" title="Pebble Steel review" alt="Pebble Steel review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/pebble-steel-review-buttons.JPG?1395230258" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Pebble Steel Tech Specs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Screen: 1.26in 144 x 168 Memory LCD 176ppi with Gorilla Glass</p> <p>Processor: ARM Cortex-M3, up to 80MHz</p> <p>RAM: 8MB</p> <p>OS: PebbleOS v2</p> <p>Storage: 8 app/watchfaces (1024kb flash memory)</p> <p>Battery: Lithium-ion, lasts 5-7 days</p> <p>Connectivity: Bluetooth 2.1, 4.0 LE</p> <p>Dimensions: 46 x 34 x 10.5mm</p> <p>Weight: 56g (99g with metal strap)</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> iOS and Android friendly </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Unlike some rivals, the Pebble isn&rsquo;t designed to help flog more smartphones, it&rsquo;ll make friends with anything - iPhones, any Android phones, even BlackBerry and Windows Phone devices, albeit unofficially. It (almost) goes without saying that this adds a dollop of futureproofing to the Pebble - reckon you&rsquo;ll switch from your <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/iphone-5s/review" target="_blank">iPhone 5s</a> to an Android within the year? The Pebble can stay put.</p> <p>On iOS and Android, getting started is a case of downloading the now much slicker and straightforward Pebble companion app and pairing via Bluetooth, a set-up that takes mere minutes.</p> <p>Then the differences begin - Pebble&rsquo;s shiny new store offers a ton of apps to load onto the device (around 1000 at the last count) but many are exclusive to either iOS or Android. <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/ios-7/ios-7/review">iOS 7</a> now supports sending notifications to Bluetooth devices (previously only messages and emails would come through) but you can&rsquo;t micromanage which ones to send over from your iPhone. With Pebble apps and Android, you can do a lot more from your watch (reply to messages etc). It&rsquo;s rather imbalanced, but this fragmentation isn&rsquo;t Pebble&rsquo;s fault and we suspect the slightly more tweaky Android crowd will be looking to stretch the smartwatch to its limits anyway.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Pebble Steel review" alt="Pebble Steel review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/pebble-steel-review-app-store.JPG?1395230258" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Pebble Steel review" alt="Pebble Steel review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/pebble-steel-review-iPhone-1.JPG?1395230258" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> App Explosion </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Pebble has always had the best digital watchfaces - kooky Mario animations, classic words and old school charmers such as Aviator (pictured) particularly suit the new build. But now it has the best smartwatch apps, too.</p> <p>A mix of free and paid for (the latter more common on iOS), useful and quirky, Pebble&rsquo;s app store boasts big names such as Yelp, Evernote and <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/pebble/ces-2014/pebble-steel-hands-worlds-best-smartwatch-just-got-smarter/news" target="_blank">Mercedes-Benz</a>, but its community of smaller developers is well established, too. Choose carefully - there&rsquo;s bags of choice but the Steel can sadly hold only eight apps or watchfaces at once, the same as the original. The Pebble companion app has an App Locker to store more, though, and it&rsquo;s quick to load and unload.</p> <p>The best Pebble apps do one of two things: offer glanceable info (think fitness and sleep tracking, bus times via UK Transport, maps with PebbGPS, Twitter mentions via Twebble) or simple wrist-top controls (the built-in music player, Huebble for <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/gadget-awards-2013/stufftv-gadget-awards-2013-these-are-best-home-gadgets-year/feature" target="_blank">Philips&rsquo; Wi-Fi Hue lights</a>). Stray too far from these functions and you&rsquo;ll end up spending ten minutes keying in one word or reaching for your smartphone.</p> <p>Clever devs have got round the eight-app rule by creating packages such as Smartwatch+ and Pebble Cards that bundle features such as weather, calendar and remote shutter into one app. These tend to cost &pound;1-2 but they&rsquo;re worth the tiny investment.</p> <p>There are more of the usual suspects (check-in to Foursquare on the watch itself, for example) and a few games, but who wants to play games on their smartwatch? This isn&rsquo;t the 80s. Sure, the<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-gear/samsung-galaxy-gear/review" target="_blank"> Galaxy Gear</a> can take photos and make calls, but Pebble&rsquo;s making nice strides into simple, no-frills home automation with apps such as the aforementioned Huebble, Kronos (for Sonos systems) and, in the US, Time Warner Cable. Controlling a smart home is that much quicker with a few presses of the Pebble&rsquo;s buttons, but we won&rsquo;t let bigger, more fully-featured smartphones and tablets stray too far. We&rsquo;re early adopters, not idiots.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Pebble Steel review - Huebble" alt="Pebble Steel review - Huebble" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/pebble-steel-review-huebble.JPG?1395230258" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Pebble Steel review - Twebble" alt="Pebble Steel review - Twebble" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/pebble-steel-review-twitter.JPG?1395230258" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Pebble Steel review - UK Transport" alt="Pebble Steel review - UK Transport" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/pebble-steel-review-transport.JPG?1395230258" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="1200" height="900" title="Pebble Steel review - music player" alt="Pebble Steel review - music player" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/pebble-steel-review-music-player.JPG?1395230258" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Tweaks not tricks </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Design aside, how far does that extra &pound;50 go? It&rsquo;s essentially the same smartwatch as the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/pebble-smartwatch/review" target="_blank">original Pebble</a> with a few tweaks but between these, the new materials and app tricks, it&rsquo;s a very different beast to the device we tested last year.</p> <p>There&rsquo;s a three-colour LED in the bottom-left of the watchface - handy for spotting when it&rsquo;s charged but fairly useless if you use the vibrate function. The Steel holds more apps and watchfaces, as we said, and there&rsquo;s now a bit more RAM - 8MB to be exact (don&rsquo;t scoff, it&rsquo;s enough).</p> <p>So the Steel performs much like its polycarbonate predecessor: a bit of lag here and there moving around the settings menus and some Bluetooth hiccups - the curse of every smartwatch we&rsquo;ve tried, we&rsquo;re afraid. But next to the overloaded<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-gear/samsung-galaxy-gear/review" target="_blank"> Samsung Galaxy Gear</a> and the sketchy <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/smartwatch/sony-smartwatch-2/review" target="_blank">Sony Smartwatch 2</a>, the Pebble is still the most reliable and smooth in use by quite some margin.</p> <p>Its default screen is still a watchface - cycle through these with the up/down buttons - with apps and settings available at the press of the middle of the Steels&rsquo; three metal buttons. Here you get the music player controls (yep, it works with Spotify), notifications archive, alarms, watchfaces, settings, and then your downloaded apps. Still a foolproof system with no fiddly touchscreen icons (as on the Sony) or confusing carousels (as on the Galaxy Gear).</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="4000" height="3000" title="Pebble Steel review " alt="Pebble Steel review " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/pebble-steel-review-metal-strap.JPG?1395230258" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Pebble Steel review " alt="Pebble Steel review " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/pebble-steel-review-close-iPhone.JPG?1395230258" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Pebble Steel review " alt="Pebble Steel review " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/pebble-steel-review-metal-close-up_0.JPG?1395230258" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Same screen, same killer battery </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>A 1.26in 176ppi e-paper screen won&rsquo;t get spec-heads sweating but the Pebble Steel sticks with last year&rsquo;s screen for good reason - it gets the job done and allows the Pebble to keep going for four to five days on a charge.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s very easy on the eye next to all the LCDs you&rsquo;ll be glued to, great for reading outdoors, and text looks as crisp as it needs to. The backlight is a bit too blue for our liking but useful nonetheless, and contrast is top-notch too: it should be on a monochrome screen such as this. As well as Gorilla Glass, Pebble&rsquo;s slathered on an oleophobic fingerprint-resistant coating, despite it not having a touchscreen. Fingerprints aren&rsquo;t a problem but the Pebble&rsquo;s metal sides do a fine job of trapping tiny bits of dust on the screen - take pride in dusting it off with your sleeve.</p> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/pebble/pebble-steel/gallery?viewid=113942" target="_blank">CHECK OUT OUR FULL PEBBLE STEEL GALLERY HERE</a></p> <p>As for that battery life, it&rsquo;s still a huge plus for the Pebble - we refuse to charge our smartwatch every night and we don&rsquo;t have to. It should drop no more than 20% a day depending on how much you use it and the Steel will warn you at both 20% and 10%.</p> <p>A few grumps in this department: you have to install an app to show the Pebble&rsquo;s battery percentage and the charger is not only proprietary but also slightly different to last year&rsquo;s cable. Well it is.</p> <p>Nothing&rsquo;s perfect - we&rsquo;d like a slightly bigger (colour e-paper?) screen to fill the watchface and give some of Pebble&rsquo;s new apps room to breathe, storage space for more apps and watchfaces, and official support for BlackBerry and Windows Phone. We&rsquo;re sure the design can also only get sleeker with refinements - Pebble should get a move on, too, as 2014 is already bringing worthy rivals, first from Samsung but possibly also from <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/htc/wrist-wars-htc-working-smartwatch-too/news" target="_blank">HTC</a> and <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-iwatch/review" target="_blank">Apple</a>.</p> <p>As a hint of what&rsquo;s to come from wearables, the Pebble is already impressive and oh so loveable. Mega-affordable, open and trustworthy, with a well thought-out featureset (not a &#39;let&#39;s chuck everything in there&#39; one) and an app store that has serious momentum, the Pebble is also a grower. Even if it doesn&rsquo;t win everyone over in seconds or minutes, sceptics turn to loyal followers within hours and days.</p> <p>Another wonderful thing? The slightly curved face is more elegant than that of the original, the buttons are satisfyingly clicky and the whole thing feels comfortable and well built.&nbsp; The overall impression is of a premium device, like something you could wear to the office even if you don&#39;t work in a design agency. In short, like a real watch.</p> <p>The Gear 2 is similarly revamped from last year&#39;s <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-gear/samsung-galaxy-gear/review" target="_blank">Galaxy Gear</a>, and like the Pebble Steel it&#39;s gone metal. No, not in a new fondness for studded denim and strong cider, but in an all-metal face available in a range of colours including, um, gold. The design is much sleeker than last year&#39;s model, with no unsightly screws and no protruding bulge on the strap for the camera. Speaking of straps, the rubber one it ships with is perfectly pleasant but the fact it can take any standard 20mm watch strap gives you complete control over its looks. That said, whatever strap you stick on it, it&#39;s still obvious that it&#39;s a smartwatch.</p> <p><strong>Winner:</strong> Pebble Steel</p> <p><strong>UPDATE:</strong> <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/pebble/pebble-steel/review">Read our in-depth Pebble Steel review here&nbsp;</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Pebble Steel" alt="Which smartphone? Which, admittedly, is less of a pro here in the gloomy old UK. And while it may only have 24,000 pixels, that&#39;s fine for displaying digits, watchfaces and notifications. The Steel&#39;s screen is unchanged from that on the original Pebble, but it is now encased behind near-unbreakable - and waterproof - Gorilla glass. There&#39;s also a new three-colour LED for notifications.</p> <p>There&#39;s no E Ink on the Gear 2 - instead, as is usually the case with Samsung, it&#39;s AMOLED all the way. The 1.63in, 320x320 display won&#39;t win any awards for sharpness, but it&#39;s perfectly good at this size and, being a proper screen, can do things E Ink can&#39;t - such as display colour photos. The other big difference is that unlike the Pebble Steel, it&#39;s a touchscreen. Good in theory, but on a screen this size, it can be fiddly.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Winner:</strong> Pebble Steel</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> POWER </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Pebble Steel&#39;s not really about power, acting more as a companion device than the all-singing, all-dancing Gear 2. Even so, we&#39;re a little disappointed that you can only install a maximum of eight apps, especially given that each watchface counts as one. Battery life on the original Pebble disappointed us slightly too, managing around three days&#39; intensive use - though with a bit of care it did last for the promised 5-7. We&#39;d imagine the Steel would fare about the same.</p> <p>In smartwatch terms, the Gear 2 is as powerful as they come. It runs on a dual-core 1GHz processor, has 512MB of RAM and even has 4GB of storage space. That means there&#39;s plenty of space for music, photos and apps, and plenty of power to do things with them. The 300mAh battery is slightly smaller than the one in the Galaxy Gear and has more work to do than the Pebble, so the promised three days&#39; of juice is likely to be optimistic. But then again, most phones struggle to survive for one day.</p> <p><strong>Winner:</strong> Samsung Gear 2</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> App Abilities </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The number of Pebble apps is growing all the time thanks to the opening of the Pebble Appstore on iOS last month. There are more than 1000 now available, ranging from watchfaces to fitness trackers to notification and battery display tools. There are even a few games, though we can&#39;t really see ourselves spending lots of time playing games on the Pebble Steel. There&#39;s a good mix of free and paid-for apps too, and with the store due to open on Android soon, we can only see things getting better. It&#39;s slick in use, with a simple four-button setup that makes operation child&#39;s play.</p> <p>One of the biggest changes between the Galaxy Gear and Gear 2 is that Samsung&#39;s ditched Android in favour of its own Tizen OS. That&#39;s fine by us, because we found using the original Gear to be a bit of a pain. From what we&#39;ve seen so far, Tizen works much more slickly, but the downside is that its app selection will be limited, at least at first. Samsung says it will launch with around 100 apps and is encouraging developers to make more. What&#39;s on offer? The usual mix of watchfaces, fitness trackers and notification apps. Just fewer of them than on Pebble.</p> <p><strong>Winner:</strong> Pebble Steel</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Pebble Steel vs Gear 2" alt="Which smartphone? But perhaps more handy still is the heart rate sensor. This keeps an eye on your pulse while you&#39;re wearing it and will work with the Samsung S Health activity tracking app. The Gear 2 also acts as a digital music player (you&#39;ll need a pair of Bluetooth headphones, natch), although you won&#39;t be able to cram all that many albums on to its 4GB of storage and, like its predecessor, will draw in notifications from a phone &ndash; as long as it&#39;s a Samsung Galaxy phone, that is. You can even make calls on it, meaning you can finally live out those Dick Tracy fantasies.</p> <p>The Pebble Steel isn&#39;t really big on features. And that&#39;s fine, really &ndash; it&#39;s designed to be a companion to your phone and not a standalone device.&nbsp; So what do you get? Well, it can display notifications of all kinds - texts, emails, incoming calls, calendar entries and social networking updates among them. It can also control a variety of devices via Bluetooth, including music players - handy if your phone&#39;s in your pocket - Hue lights, Sonos and more. Plus you can view maps and transport info on it.&nbsp; All the same, the feature-packed Gear 2 has it soundly beaten in this round.</p> <p><strong>Winner:</strong> Samsung Gear 2</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/smart-watches-dont-need-be-smartphones/feature" target="_blank">There&#39;s nothing smart about a watch that&#39;s also a phone</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Samsung Gear 2 and Galaxy S5" alt="Which smartwatch? And here&#39;s why.</p> <p>Let&#39;s take the most basic smartwatch around at the moment: the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/pebble-smartwatch/review" target="_blank">Pebble</a>. Thanks to <a href="http://ifixit.org/blog/4360/pebble-teardown" target="_blank">iFixit</a>, we know that it has a 3.7V battery which is rated for 130mAh. Multiplying those two numbers together, it gives us a fully charged capacity of 0.48Wh. The Pebble&#39;s low-power ARM Cortex-M3 processor, made by STMicro, consumes 32microWatts per MHz of clockspeed, and its maximum clockspeed is believed to be 80MHz (according to the official spec sheet) &ndash; but since that can also clock down to almost nothing most of the time it doesn&#39;t tell us much and besides, the battery in the Pebble lasts about five days and also powers an e-ink screen and the Bluetooth transciever.</p> <p>Since we know that the Pebble lasts for about five days on a single charge (or 120 hours-ish), napkin maths tells us that it thus consumes, on average, somewhere in the region of 0.004W. When you look at something more likely to be a competitor to an iWatch, the figures stop making much sense.</p> <p>&ldquo;I don&#39;t think you could use the Pebble as a benchmark for power requirements,&rdquo; says South African technologist, Toby Kurien, &ldquo;Rather look to the Galaxy Gear for that. If I&#39;m not mistaken, that&#39;s around a 315mAh battery, probably running at 3.7V. That equates to around 1.2Wh. So you&#39;d need a panel capable of around 0.4W to be able to charge your watch in about three hours or so.&rdquo;</p> <p>A quick reminder &ndash; 0.4W is still five times more power than a watch strap sized cell running at maximum efficiency. According to Kurien it&#39;s likely that a top end panel would produce twice that amount of power under optimal conditions, but that would still take eight hours of direct sunlight to charge the iWatch.</p> <p>&ldquo; It is feasible if the idea is that your watch is constantly charging from sun and/or interior lighting and you&#39;re not expecting a full charge,&rdquo; says Kurien, &ldquo;though my feeling is that it&#39;s still unlikely given practical considerations, and how it affects cost and aesthetics.&rdquo;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="604" height="453" title="Samsung Galaxy Gear" alt="Samsung Galaxy Gear" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-gear.JPG?1392651680" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> But… But… APPLE! </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Just one more thing. While most of NASA&rsquo;s cameras were left on the lunar surface to save weight during the journey back to Earth, this one made it back through a fault: the film became jammed inside and because it couldn&rsquo;t be removed, the whole thing needed to be brought home.</p> <p>It eventually made its way into the hands of an Italian collector, who is now putting it under the hammer at Vienna&rsquo;s Westlicht gallery. Nearly a year later, the first Pebbles are rolling off the production lines.
