PayPal Android app gets NFC makeover

This app update should look pretty nice on this month's Galaxy Nexus

PayPal for Android 3.0 is here – but why do we care? Well, it's just another clue in the mystery that is the long awaited arrival of NFC mobile payments. PayPal has overhauled its Android app so that users can transfer money between their accounts in a few easy steps. The indebted enters an amount, taps the NFC handset against their friend's NFC handset then their friend enters a password and voila – having no change is no longer an excuse.

Of course, this scenario requires a pair of Galaxy Nexus or Nexus S smartphones but plenty of other manufacturers like Nokia and HTC are dropping rather large hints that 2012 will be the year of the NFC phone for them, too. And this app update might break PayPal out of its eBay cage.
