It&rsquo;s only the second 2K display we&rsquo;ve clapped eyes on, with the other being the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/g3/lg-g3/review">LG G3</a>, and unsurprisingly it dominates the front of the Oppo.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s incredibly detailed - 538ppi, in fact - and it shows. Get your pupils up close, lashes on the glass, and you&rsquo;ll notice sharper text on pages with tiny fonts and an extra crispness to hi-res images. Enjoy these moments, because while it&rsquo;s a gorgeous screen in many ways, it&rsquo;s not flawless.</p> <p>Blacks are nice and inky and colours are vivid and accurate; the G3&rsquo;s palette is slightly cooler. But contrast isn&rsquo;t the strongest (a drawback shared by the LG) and on low brightness or off-axis viewing in particular, it just doesn&rsquo;t pop. The G3 also manages to pick up extra bits of detail when watching full HD movies. It&rsquo;s fairly bright, on a par with the G3, though not as bright as a Galaxy S5, so in direct sunlight it can suffer.</p> <p>We should also point out that neither this nor the G3 will make you gasp as soon as you fire it up. Useful though they are, the extra pixels don&rsquo;t make as much of a difference as the jump from 720p to 1080p did. Still, we&rsquo;re being picky.</p> <p>While this isn&rsquo;t quite as good as the best 2K screen on the planet, it&rsquo;s a close call.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:</strong> <strong><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/g3/lg-g3/review">LG G3 is the best smartphone on the planet. The Oppo can be wiped out in four hours when you&rsquo;ve used it intensively (and constantly) to watch movies, play games and take photos. In our HD video rundown (Wi-Fi on, half brightness) it lasted a slightly more respectable 5hrs 20.</p> <p>Remember everyone on the internet worrying that the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/g3/lg-g3/review">LG G3&rsquo;s battery</a> doesn&rsquo;t quite match that of the G2? The Oppo shows how well LG did with it. Streaming Netflix on our commute, the Find 7&rsquo;s 3000mAh battery dropped 18% in half an hour - that&rsquo;s versus the G3&rsquo;s much less worrying 8%.</p> <p>Oppo&rsquo;s tried to help in two ways - use the VOOC fast-charging cable supplied in the box and the Oppo will rejuice by 75% in 30 minutes. In reality, you can get back up to full charge in not much longer. The battery unit is also swappable, so you can carry a spare if that&rsquo;s practical.</p> <p>Add in the lower price and although the battery life is a bit of a shame, it&rsquo;s a flaw we can just about live with.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/oneplus-one/review">The &pound;230 OnePlus One that&#39;s almost identical to the Oppo</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="That 25% won&#039;t last as long as you&#039;d hope " alt="Oppo Find 7 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Oppo-find-7-review-battery-icon.png?1407493082" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Oppo Find 7 Tech Specs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Absurdly Powerful </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Find 7 is every bit as powerful as the specs suggest.</p> <p>Day-to-day we experienced no major hiccups and any slight lag was down to Oppo&rsquo;s ColorOS - more on that later. Games run super smooth and though it heats up a little when gaming, taking photos for a long time or running benchmarks, performance is always top-notch.</p> <p>Those benchmarks are pretty insane, too. By comparison, the G3 manages 2649.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s also worth mentioning here that the Find 7 comes with 32GB of storage plus the option to expand by up to 128GB via microSD. That makes it even better value next to the 16GB flagships.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-s5/samsung-galaxy-s5/review">Samsung Galaxy S5 reviewed&nbsp;</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Browsing, games - everything is fast " alt="Oppo Find 7 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Oppo-Find-7-review-stufftv.png?1407493082" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Tall &#039;n&#039; Titanium </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>At this price, the Oppo was never going to match the LG G3&rsquo;s gorgeous, light and almost bezel-less design. But we don&rsquo;t care, because this is a superbly built smartphone in its own right.</p> <p>The combination of its titanium-aluminium frame and removable (if slightly slippy) carbon-fibre back cover with a diagonal pin-stripe pattern means it feels premium, albeit while looking a little safe. It&rsquo;s fairly weighty at 173g and feels sturdy, with none of the flimsiness of a <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-s5/samsung-galaxy-s5/review">Galaxy S5</a>. Plus it&rsquo;s easy to hold in one palm despite its 5.5in size. A pulsing &lsquo;Skyline&rsquo; notification light below the screen is a nice touch too, a stylish alternative to the blinking LED dot.</p> <p>Sure, the bezels make it look both taller than most and a bit retro. The capacitive buttons are too dim, which is a pain. And overall the thinner, lighter <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/oneplus-one/review">OnePlus</a> with its changeable covers does feel like the cooler, more characterful device.</p> <p>But the Find 7 has a solid, understated design and it&rsquo;s a lot easier to actually get one in your hands.</p> <p>One more thing that might annoy: call quality is fine but the speaker volume is a little low, making it tricky to hear what the person on the other end is saying. We were wary of this at first but it&rsquo;s easy to do - you just hold the shutter down - and can produce usable, hi-res shots. Do be prepared for mammoth file sizes though.</p> <p>The front-facer is also a cut above the usual, so if you want sharper selfies, you&rsquo;re in luck. Both full HD and 4K video are smooth and detailed too, with steady autofocus. And there are lots of scene modes, GIF modes and shooting options (including RAW) to play around with. It might not be quite as intuitive as the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/oneplus-one/review">OnePlus One&rsquo;s</a> swipe-to-switch-modes feature, but the Oppo&rsquo;s is an easy-to-navigate camera app that gets results.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sony/sony-xperia-z2/review">Sony&#39;s Xperia Z2 takes stunning smartphone snaps&nbsp;</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Quick access to HDR mode and er.. beautify " alt="Oppo Find 7 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Oppo-Find-7-review-camera-app.png?1407493082" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="We prefer the swipe to switch scene feature on the OnePlus " alt="Oppo Find 7 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Oppo-Find-7-review-camera-app-2.png?1407493082" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Gesture-friendly ColorOS </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Like the Find 7a, this Oppo is dressed in ColorOS - a highly customisable, gesture-friendly Android skin that skimps only on phablet-centric features.</p> <p>ColorOS is based on Android 4.3, which is a bit of a shame, but it&rsquo;s a dream for power users and tinkerers. You can customise your own gestures, with almost every basic action available via a swipe of your choosing or a shape drawn onscreen. You can also choose themes to customise homescreens, lockscreens, fonts and icons; one of them even gives it a relatively stock Android look and feel.</p> <p>Some of the basics have international quirks that you&rsquo;ll have to get used to - for instance, nav buttons such as &lsquo;connect&rsquo; and &lsquo;cancel&rsquo; are often switched round so the &lsquo;back&rsquo; option is on the right. And the pre-installed keyboard might say &lsquo;input contents&rsquo; in an empty message. But chances are you&rsquo;ll swap the keyboard out anyway.</p> <p>Now flagships have grown to G3-proportions, it&rsquo;s tempting to forget that at this size this is a <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-note-3/samsung-galaxy-note-3/review">Galaxy Note 3</a> rival. ColorOS itself doesn&rsquo;t push the big screen factor - there&rsquo;s no split screen feature or floating windows as you&rsquo;d get on a Samsung. The more expensive handsets offer more carefully crafted designs, more carefully refined Android skins and have more capable cameras. The Oppo&rsquo;s battery life is a bit of a concern too, unless you&rsquo;re happy to carry a spare.</p> <p>If you&rsquo;re looking to buy a smartphone outright though, the Oppo opens up your choice from the usual Android suspects. We&#39;ve yet to see the 7&#39;s 2K screen in person, but if you think 1080p is more than enough for your retinas to soak in then you might want to take a look at the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/oppo/oppo-find-7a/review" target="_blank">Oppo Find 7a</a> or <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-note-3/samsung-galaxy-note-3/review" target="_blank">Galaxy Note 3</a> instead.</p> <p>Stay tuned for a full in-depth Oppo Find 7 review, after which we&#39;ll update this feature to reflect any changes.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/smartphones/top-ten" target="_blank">Top 10 best smartphones in the world right now</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Looking pretty" alt="Oppo Find 7 vs HTC One (M8)" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/HTC_One_M8-review-lockscreen_5.jpg?1400553969" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-carousel-item"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-text field-field-carousel-item-title"> <div class="field-label">Carousel item title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Oppo Find 7 vs HTC One (M8) </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-carousel-item-standfirst"> <div class="field-label">Carousel item standfirst:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> HTC&#039;s finest takes on Oppo&#039;s pixel-packed flagship </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/find-7/oppo-find-7-vs-htc-one-m8-weigh/feature" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/find-7/oppo-find-7-vs-htc-one-m8-weigh/feature#comments Android Find 7 HTC One (M8) Oppo Smartphones Wed, 14 May 2014 15:28:17 +0000 Esat Dedezade 1437174 at http://www.stuff.tv Oppo Find 7a http://www.stuff.tv/oppo/oppo-find-7a/review <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> This budget superphone proves that do-it-all phablets don’t have to make your wallet weep </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Oppo Find 7a review - no, it&#039;s not the Find 7 but it&#039;s close " alt="Oppo Find 7a review - no, it&#039;s not the Find 7 but it&#039;s close " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/Oppo-Find-7a-review-main.png?1406085060" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/sophie-charara" title="View user profile.">Sophie Charara</a> </div> </div> </div> <p>First things first - this isn&rsquo;t the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/find-7/oppo-find-7/review" target="_blank">Oppo Find 7</a>. Because while it might not have a 2K screen or carbon fiber back cover, it does have a 13MP Sony camera capable of shooting 50MP &lsquo;multishot&rsquo; images and 4K video.</p> <p>That&rsquo;s right. The Oppo can stitch together 8160 x 6120 images out of a selection of ten shots taken in a burst. And if you&rsquo;re the type to blow your smartphone snaps up and crop into them, it captures plenty of detail. Admittedly, that doesn&rsquo;t always make for magically perfect photos - megapixels aren&rsquo;t everything - and with image file sizes ranging from 11MB to 17MB, it&rsquo;s to be used sparingly. It takes a couple of seconds too so while it&rsquo;s not a gimmick, it won&rsquo;t be how you take the majority of your photos.</p> <p>Switch to shooting standard 13MP pics and the good news is that it&rsquo;s hard to take bad photos with the Oppo. Colours are captured accurately, contrast is excellent and there isn&rsquo;t too much noise. The Find 7a does a good job in low light too; pics indoors aren&rsquo;t the last word in sharpness but faces come out nicely and even at night, it takes decent snaps.</p> <p><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="375" mozallowfullscreen="" msallowfullscreen="" oallowfullscreen="" src="https://www.flickr.com/photos/99712217@N05/14004175862/in/set-72157644290852721/player/" webkitallowfullscreen="" width="500"></iframe></p> <p>The camera app itself is easy to use, with quick access to this &lsquo;Ultra HD&rsquo; 50MP setting as well as the excellent HDR mode and options such as shooting in Raw, GIF mode and panorama. Autofocus is fast, but not quite <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-s5/samsung-galaxy-s5/review" target="_blank">Samsung Galaxy S5</a>-speedy - so be prepared for the occasional blur-fest in certain conditions.</p> <p>If we had to choose, in good light we&rsquo;d just give the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-note-3/samsung-galaxy-note-3/review" target="_blank">Note 3&rsquo;s</a> 13MP camera the edge, as its snaps look a touch clearer and sharper. When things get darker, the Oppo is the better bet especially if it&rsquo;s people you&rsquo;re photographing. Either way it&rsquo;s close.</p> <p>On the video front, 1080p footage is clear and smooth but the headline is the Find 7a&#39;s 4K shooting abilities - aside from the occasional judder when moving the Oppo quickly, this is impressive in use too with steadier autofocus than the Sony Xperia Z2. Now we just need a telly for 4K playback.&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="No such thing as too many pixels " alt="No such thing as too many pixels " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Oppo-Find-7a-review-viewfinder.png?1406085060" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="One of the homescreens is dedicated to pics " alt="One of the homescreens is dedicated to pics " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Oppo-Find-7a-review-camera-homescreen.png?1406085060" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="The Oppo&#039;s f/2.0 lens " alt="The Oppo&#039;s f/2.0 lens " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Oppo-Find-7a-review-camera.png?1406085060" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Waiting for 2K </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>It might not be 2K, but the Oppo has a seriously impressive 5.5in screen in its own right.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>If you want a bigger display purely for watching movies, forget the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and get this. Nothing beats a brighter-than-bright Samsung screen for reading outdoors, but indoors we&rsquo;d take the Oppo.&nbsp;</p> <p>It&rsquo;s 5.5in and full HD so slightly sharper than the Note 3&rsquo;s 5.7in display, with bags of detail and smooth text. Contrast is excellent too - making for crisp, white web pages and punchy full HD movies from Google Play. Colours are on the warmer, more saturated end of the spectrum but our favourite Masterchef faces still look natural. If you&rsquo;re used to Samsung screens, you may think the Oppo looks washed out - but we reckon it&rsquo;s just right.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>AND ON THE FIND 7</strong>: The Oppo Find 7 will land with a 2560x1440 screen. Big screens are always a worry when it comes to battery life, especially if you spend your two commutes a day browsing the web, listening to music, watching movies and playing games as we do. Alright, so we&rsquo;ve got short attention spans.</p> <p>Anyway, give it a thorough workout and the Oppo will usually need a bit of help making it to the end of the day. It&rsquo;s far from terrible and standby time is decent, it&rsquo;s just not as good as its obvious rival the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-note-3/samsung-galaxy-note-3/review" target="_blank">Galaxy Note 3</a>. We took both out snapping for an hour and a half: the Note dropped around 10%, the Oppo 20%. Watching a movie on Netflix over Wi-Fi (with the display on half brightness) means the Find 7a&rsquo;s battery tumbles 30%.</p> <p>So you might be plugging in the 7a more than you&rsquo;d like, but Oppo is trying to help. Its claims of fast charging up to 75% in just half an hour are entirely true, so you&rsquo;ll re-juice in no time. And it&rsquo;s also offering spare batteries to the first customers to pre-order the Find 7a.</p> <p><strong>A</strong><strong>ND ON THE FIND 7:&nbsp;</strong>We can&rsquo;t speculate too much on the Find 7&rsquo;s battery life, but we do know the cell itself will be slightly bigger at 3000mAh. It&rsquo;s still swappable and the device will (somehow) be the same weight. If stamina is key though, the non-2K Find 7a is likely to be the better choice.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="If swappable batteries make you giddy, this should be a sight for sore eyes " alt="If swappable batteries make you giddy, this should be a sight for sore eyes " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Oppo-Find-7a-review-battery.png?1406085060" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Power saving tricks are sadly necessary for the Oppo " alt="Power saving tricks are sadly necessary for the Oppo " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Oppo-Find-7a-review-power-saving.png?1406085060" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> ColorOS: Oppo customisation, phablet features missing </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Find 7a runs Oppo&rsquo;s own ColorOS brand of Android. That might frustrate some, as it&rsquo;s based on Android 4.3 rather than 4.4 KitKat, but we&rsquo;ll forgive it since in general it shows Google plenty of love.</p> <p>How? Well, as well as having the standard Google homescreen bar, it can also launch Google Now with a voice command (the annoyingly non-customisable Hey Snapdragon, for now) even when the screen is off. That&rsquo;s a similar trick to the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/motorola-moto-x/review" target="_blank">Moto X&rsquo;s Touchless Control</a>, and it&rsquo;s one that we like.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s also a good choice for anyone who likes to tinker with how their Android looks and feels. There are downloadable themes for homescreens, lockscreens and icons and even the ability to customise your own gestures. You can make a double tap on the blank screen to wake or unlock the phone or launch an app, for instance. Or you can open the camera with a swipe from the bottom when asleep. Oppo&rsquo;s suggestions, such as swiping up or down onscreen with two fingers to control the volume, quickly become habits too.</p> <p>Where it falls down a little OS-wise is with its lack of phablet features.</p> <p>Part of what Samsung does brilliantly with the Note series is make use of the extra screen space. Oppo&rsquo;s own ColorOS offers plenty of customisation and gestures that you wouldn&rsquo;t get had it launched with stock Android, but it doesn&rsquo;t change the way you use the smartphone or create a mini tablet experience.</p> <p>So unlike on the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-note-3/samsung-galaxy-note-3/review" target="_blank">Note 3</a> there&rsquo;s no built-in stylus and handwriting recognition. Nor can you run apps side by side or as a small window on top of what you&rsquo;re doing. A few tweaks is all it would&rsquo;ve taken, but they&rsquo;d have been very welcome.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE</strong>: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/oneplus-one-smartphone-image-leaked/news" target="_blank">The &pound;230 CyangogenMod OnePlus One is official</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Switch gestures in seconds to get the right mix " alt="Switch gestures in seconds to get the right mix " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Oppo-Find-7a-review-gestures.png?1406085060" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Try saying Hey Snapdragon in the street and looking cool " alt="Try saying Hey Snapdragon in the street and looking cool " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Oppo-Find-7a-review-google-now.png?1406085060" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Oppo Find 7a Tech Specs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Screen: 5.5in 1920x1080 IPS, 403ppi (Gorilla Glass 3)</p> <p>Processor: 2.3GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801</p> <p>RAM: 2GB&nbsp;</p> <p>OS: ColorOS (based on Android 4.3)&nbsp;</p> <p>Camera: 13MP f/2.0 rear, 5MP front, 4K video @ 30fps</p> <p>Storage: 16GB (microSD up to 128GB)&nbsp;</p> <p>Battery: 2800mAh (swappable)&nbsp;</p> <p>Connectivity: Wi-Fi, 3G/4G, NFC, Bluetooth 4.0&nbsp;</p> <p>Dimensions: 152.6 x 75 x 9.2mm&nbsp;</p> <p>Weight: 170g&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> No Scrimping on Silicon </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>ColorOS might be a fairly heavy Android skin but it doesn&rsquo;t slow the Find 7a down. On the contrary, the Oppo goes toe to toe with the best &pound;500+ smartphones on performance.</p> <p>That&rsquo;s because it&rsquo;s running on exactly the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor as nearly all of the top handsets we&rsquo;ve seen so far this year. On AnTuTu it scores a blistering 36,616, one of the highest scores we&rsquo;ve seen yet and higher than that of the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-note-3/samsung-galaxy-note-3/review" target="_blank">Note 3</a> and <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/htc/htc-one-2/review" target="_blank">One (M8)</a> which scores 36,149.</p> <p>Downloads are fast, web browsing too. In fact in a week of solid use, the Oppo&rsquo;s record had just a single blemish. Asphalt 8 kept crashing and we couldn&rsquo;t get it to play at all. Other intensive Android games (including Asphalt 7) worked fine though, so we can let that slide.</p> <p><strong>AND ON THE FIND 7</strong>: With 3GB of RAM on the Find 7, rather than the 2GB here, multi-tasking should be even smoother than on the 7a in the long run. But it&rsquo;s not a major reason to go for the more expensive model. It&rsquo;s worth noting, though, that the Find 7 will come in a 32GB model as standard, rather than 16GB like the 7a.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> The Phablet you forget is a phablet </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Oppo&rsquo;s last handset, the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/oppo-n1/review" target="_blank">N1</a>, was a bit of an odd looker - big build, rotating camera, touch panel on the back of the phone. The Find 7a has more of a subtle design. Neat and tidy without looking cheap. See Samsung, it can be done. It&rsquo;s a tall device, though.</p> <p>There&rsquo;s a fair amount of space wasted on the front, making it look a little retro. And the edges aren&rsquo;t as painstakingly finished as they are on, say, a HTC either. But it&rsquo;s solid - it takes a lot of effort to get the 7a to flex, it doesn&rsquo;t creak and the screen is slathered in Gorilla Glass.</p> <p>Ultimately it&rsquo;s a win. The metal frame and matte, slightly textured polycarbonate covers look as understated as those on a <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/google-nexus-5/review" target="_blank">Nexus</a>, but with all the practicality of a Samsung. And you can remove the cover for both a swappable battery and microSD storage.</p> <p>Although not especially light at 170g, the Oppo is at least designed to look light and that makes a difference. Plus, given its size, the it&rsquo;s surprisingly easy to hold. It&rsquo;s the phablet you forget is a phablet.</p> <p><strong>AND ON THE FIND 7</strong>: Carbon fiber and titanium sound good? And the Find 7a is an insanely good value smartphone that just happens to have a big screen.</p> <p>It really is close to being a game-changing device. It matches many of the specs and features we&rsquo;ve seen on the best 2014 smartphones so far, and it does it in plenty of style and for a bargain price.</p> <p>Its only real flaw is that it makes no real concession to its large form. Compare it to the Note 3, a device with hardware and software entirely built around the fact it has a big screen, and it falls short in this regard.</p> <p>Still, Oppo wouldn&rsquo;t want to leave the Find 7 with no work to do. That phone is the device that will move beyond what we&rsquo;ve seen from the likes of Samsung and LG so far, in style and at a low price. The good news? It&rsquo;s weeks away.</p> <p>Would we wait? Yes. The Find 7 looks to be the more futureproof buy, plus the LG G3 may turn up any day with a 2K screen of its own. Not to mention the fact that the extremely similar 5.5in OnePlus One, created by an ex-Oppo exec and on its way for an almost ridiculously cheap &pound;230, will also be here soon.</p> <p>One thing&rsquo;s for certain. That&#39;s a staggeringly sharp 538ppi, and it easily trounces the 5.1in 1080p 432ppi screen of the Galaxy S5. Or any other major smartphone for that matter.</p> <p>Until the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/g3/lg-g3/review" target="_blank">LG G3</a> drops with its rumoured QHD display, the Find 7&#39;s screen will be undisputed champion. Assuming the G3 rumours are true of course.</p> <p>The Find 7 uses LCD as apposed to Samsung&#39;s preferred AMOLED screen tech, so you&#39;ll probably prefer the S5&#39;s screen if you rate true blacks above all else. Both screens are slathered in Gorilla Glass 3 for extra scratch protection.</p> <p>While you&#39;ll also find the Galaxy S5&#39;s screen more comfortable for one-handed use, the Oppo Find 7 simply has to win the screen round sheerly due to the insane nature of its display.</p> <p><em>Winner:</em> <strong>Oppo Find 7</strong></p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/g3/lg-g3/review" target="_blank">LG G3: price, specs, release date - everything we think we know</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Samsung Galaxy S5 vs Oppo Find 7: the weigh in" alt="Samsung Galaxy S5 vs Oppo Find 7: the weigh in" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/oppo-find-7-05_0.jpg?1395287044" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Beauty contest </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Find 7 and Galaxy S5 have plastic builds for the most part, but they still occupy opposite ends of the design spectrum.</p> <p>While Samsung has been criticised for not revamping the Galaxy S5&#39;s design, we do like its rubbery, dimpled back. It offers substantially more grip than previous slippery plastic-clad Galaxy devices, and it looks nicer than the faux leather rear of the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-note-3/samsung-galaxy-note-3/review" target="_blank">Galaxy Note 3</a>.</p> <p>Just ignore the shocking metallic blue colour and you&#39;ll be fine.</p> <p>It is however still made from polycarbonate, which will disappoint fans looking for some more premium metal and glass materials.</p> <p>The Oppo Find 7 on the other hand, is more exciting. It&#39;s new, it&#39;s fresh, and, well, it just looks really nice.</p> <p>We like its subtly rounded curves and its plain black front, and we really, really like its pulsing LED notification strip which is located beneath the display.</p> <p>It&#39;s also got a steel frame, which should give it a more premium feel than the Galaxy S5.</p> <p>Both the Galaxy S5 and Find 7 have removable back covers which provide access to handy microSD slots to expand storage. Both batteries can also be replaced, which is another plus.</p> <p>The Galaxy S5 also features IP67 water and dust protection, and though the Find 7&#39;s screen can be operated with wet hands, it won&#39;t fare as well as the S5 in a downpour.</p> <p>For feeling fresher with a sleeker, more premium design though, the Find 7 clinches this round.</p> <p><em>Winner:</em> <strong>Oppo Find 7</strong></p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/samsung-galaxy-s5-hands-review/feature" target="_blank">Galaxy S5 hands-on review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="Samsung Galaxy S5 vs Oppo Find 7: the weigh in" alt="Samsung Galaxy S5 vs Oppo Find 7: the weigh in" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/oppo-find-7-04_0.jpg?1395287044" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Samsung Galaxy S5 vs Oppo Find 7: the weigh in" alt="Samsung Galaxy S5 vs Oppo Find 7: the weigh in" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-s5-charcoal-back_2.jpg?1395287044" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Snap happy </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Galaxy S5 has a 16MP snapper with an extremely fast 0.3 second autofocus. Oh, and of course, your heart rate, thanks to the built in heart rate sensor on the S5&#39;s rear.</p> <p>Speaking of sensors, the Galaxy S5&#39;s Home button doubles up as a fingerprint scanner, letting you unlock the device and restrict access to sensitive files and folders. You can even pay for things online with PayPal with a simple swipe.</p> <p>Oppo&#39;s Color OS on the other hand offers a few useful tricks of its own, with gesture controls coming in very handy. A two-fingered swipe up or down can, for example, change the volume, and you can create custom gestures too.</p> <p>Pulling down the notification bar from the top left brings up a gesture panel, which you can then use to draw custom gestures to call contacts or open up apps.</p> <p>Themes are also supported, allowing you to revamp the look and feel of the device with a few simple taps.</p> <p><em>Winner: </em><strong>Samsung Galaxy S5</strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="Samsung Galaxy S5 vs Oppo Find 7: the weigh in" alt="Samsung Galaxy S5 vs Oppo Find 7: the weigh in" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/fpscanner.JPG?1395287044" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-6"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Initial Verdict </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>This is a tough one. And it&rsquo;s a beauty when you do.</p> <p>Colours pop and contrast is bang-on whether you&rsquo;re scrolling through pin-sharp text on <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/" target="_blank">Stuff.tv</a>, playing <em><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/deus-ex-fall/review" target="_blank">Deus Ex: The Fall</a></em> or just trying on themes, lockscreens and icon packs for size. Viewing angles are nice and wide, too. So yes, everyone in the self-service queue behind you <em>is</em> staring at your phone and <em>can</em> see exactly what you&rsquo;re doing.</p> <p>A small warning for movie buffs: loading the N1 up with 1080p videos does make it apparent that the o-mazing Oppo&rsquo;s screen isn&rsquo;t quite on a par with, say, an <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/lg-g2/review" target="_blank">LG G2</a> or a teeny <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/iphone-5s/review" target="_blank">iPhone</a>. It&rsquo;s not quite as crisp and punchy as the best, at 377ppi, and colours drift a little to the warm side (think suntanned faces). The <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-note-3/samsung-galaxy-note-3/review" target="_blank">Note 3</a> gets brownie points in this respect for easily accessible screen modes to suit every taste.</p> <p>There&rsquo;s lots to love, though. A double tap turns the N1&rsquo;s screen on, as with the similarly gargantuan G2 - especially handy as the shallow power button can be tricky to find when phone juggling. And Oppo hasn&rsquo;t even taken up any screen real estate for home, back and settings buttons - glowing capacitive buttons sit below the display.</p> <p>No close-to 6in phone is going to be easy to hold one-handed, but although it&rsquo;s 9mm thick the Oppo looks and feels sleek, with a helpful, ergonomic curve to the back. At 213g, feeble wrists will start to ache after 20 minutes streaming <em>Archer</em> during a commute, but all in all the screen makes the heft worth it.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The Oppo N1&#039;s 5.9in screen is Full HD and slathered in Gorilla Glass " alt="The Oppo N1&#039;s 5.9in screen is Full HD and slathered in Gorilla Glass " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Oppo-N1-review-screen-1.png?1393463227" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Wide viewing angles mean Pixar for two " alt="Wide viewing angles mean Pixar for two " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Oppo-N1-review-screen-2.jpg?1393463227" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Your phone can be a playground </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Building a 5.9in flagship phone is just the start of Oppo&rsquo;s design mischief. Once the shock of its size has sunk in it&rsquo;s easy to see that the N1 has been carefully constructed with a lovely matte plastic finish, dual chamfers, slim bezels - oh, and a rotating camera up top.</p> <p>The 13MP camera, its dual LED flash and the small top speaker can be flipped to face forwards, backwards or anywhere in between. Sure, it looks retro (and slightly annoyingly it relegates the headphone jack to the bottom edge) but after plenty of time with clean slabs of metal and glass it&rsquo;s a bit of a delight to flip part of your phone around without feeling like an idiot. In short, it&rsquo;s our new favourite nervous habit.</p> <p>Oppo&rsquo;s not done messing with the outsides of the smartphone, either. Smack bang centre of the back of gigantophones is the place to be right now - the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/lg-g2/review" target="_blank">G2&rsquo;s</a> power and volume buttons sit here as does the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/htc/htc-one-max/review" target="_blank">HTC One Max&rsquo;s</a> fingerprint scanner.</p> <p>Oppo uses it for its O-Touch panel, a <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/pch-2000/playstation-vita-slim/review" target="_blank">PS Vita</a>-style touch-sensitive rectangle that can be used as an alternative control - swiping up or down can be used to scroll through long articles in Chrome, for example. In use we found some settings, such as scrolling, genuinely useful on a big phone, but others, such as tapping to launch the camera, actually took in practice than the standard button.</p> <p>Just one more Oppo device to play with: the O-Click accessory. This nifty tech button is temperamental with some CyanogenMod compatibility tweaks needed, but it works well as a remote shutter for the N1&rsquo;s camera. It can be attached to keys and acts as an alarm to find your phone quickly too.</p> <p>Take or leave the N1&rsquo;s quirks, but what the Oppo does best is let you experiment with features, themes, gestures - even which OS you want the N1 to run&hellip;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="13MP camera looks retro but is nifty in use " alt="13MP camera looks retro but is nifty in use " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Oppo-N1-review-camera-playground.png?1393463227" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="You can&#039;t see it but this is the N1&#039;s O-Touch panel " alt="You can&#039;t see it but this is the N1&#039;s O-Touch panel " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Oppo-N1-review-OTouch.png?1393463227" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Oppo N1 Tech Specs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><strong>Operating system</strong> -&nbsp;Color, based on Android 4.2</p> <p><strong>Processor</strong> - 1.7GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 quad core</p> <p><strong>RAM</strong> - 2GB</p> <p><strong>Screen</strong> - 5.9in IPS with 1920x1080 resolution (377ppi), Gorilla Glass 3</p> <p><strong>Camera</strong> - 13MP w/ dedicated ISP, dual-mode LED, f/2.0</p> <p><strong>Storage</strong> - 16/32GB</p> <p><strong>Connectivity</strong> - Wi-Fi, NFC, Bluetooth 4.0</p> <p><strong>Battery</strong> - 3610mAh</p> <p><strong>Dimensions/weight</strong> - 170.7x82.6x9mm/213g</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Two fresh versions of Android are better than one </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Here&rsquo;s where things get super exciting - or super nerdy, depending on which way you look at it.</p> <p>Oppo&rsquo;s own <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/android-44-kitkat/review" target="_blank">Android</a> skin - ColorOS - is most likely what will arrive pre-installed on your N1. Based on Android 4.2, it&rsquo;s a customisable overhaul that includes Google Play access and a familiar widgets, homescreens and app drawer set-up.</p> <p>Useful tricks include gestures such as swiping up/down with two fingers to control volume (including in third-party apps such as Netflix), the status bar disappearing unless you nudge it down and a whole bunch of free online themes accessible by swiping up from the centre of the N1. Our theme of choice is the adorable Constellation, but <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/ios-7/ios-7/review" target="_blank">iOS 7</a>-style icons are available too - you know, to be ironic. An in-built stylus is nowhere to be found but handwriting is still an option with finger scrawls.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/5-ways-make-android-more-beautiful-ios-7/feature" target="_blank">11 ways to make Android look even better than iOS7</a></strong></p> <p>ColorOS is fresh and intriguing, but the big noise over the N1 comes from Android fans who are bursting with excitement over one of their darling systems going &lsquo;legit&rsquo; through a partnership with Oppo. Said system is CyanogenMod, and if you can&#39;t track&nbsp;down a limited edition CyanogenMod N1 you can simply install it yourself. And don&rsquo;t worry, Oppo has done all the legwork - there&#39;s no fussing around with drivers, flashing or manual update faffing and you can easily drag the file across onto your phone from Macs as well as PCs. <a href="http://www.oppoforums.com/threads/cyanogenmod-for-the-oppo-n1.8017/" target="_blank">More instructions can be found here</a> - it really is a ten minute job.</p> <p>CyanogenMod is very similar to stock Android in that it&rsquo;s fuss-free and runs silky smooth. On the N1 it&rsquo;s also compatible with the O-Touch panel, Oppo&rsquo;s gestures, and even the O-Click accessory, making the decision to switch very easy. And, in short, everything is customisable - extending desktops means more homescreens to play with, you can alter how your battery displays in the status bar, what&rsquo;s on the lockscreen, and grab icons from Android launchers such as Nova. Very open, very phone-geek.</p> <p>The N1 is a smartphone to spend hours, rather than minutes, tweaking to your exact, detail-crazed specifications and discovering new features - both ColorOS and CyanogenMod allow you to do this but we suspect the latter will be on most N1s before long. It&rsquo;s a shame you can&rsquo;t flit between the two - going back to ColorOS involves reinstalling Oppo firmware in the same way so it&rsquo;s a bit of a pain. And the one thing we missed completely is a Note 3-style multi-window feature to make the most of the 5.9in screen. But, hey, perhaps we&rsquo;re just being greedy.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="CyanogenMod gets the thumbs up from Google on the Oppo " alt="CyanogenMod gets the thumbs up from Google on the Oppo " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Oppo-N1-review-CyanogenMod-start.png?1393463227" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Customisable status bars ahoy!" alt="Customisable status bars ahoy!" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Oppo-N1-review-status-bar-CM.png?1393463227" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="We like ColorOS&#039; dedicated camera homescreen " alt="We like ColorOS&#039; dedicated camera homescreen " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Oppo-N1-review-camera-ColorOS.png?1393463227" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="1200" height="900" title="Constellation is adorable - check out that gramophone icon " alt="Constellation is adorable - check out that gramophone icon " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Oppo-N1-review-theme-constellation.png?1393463227" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Selfies deserve 13MP too </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Two OSes are better than one, but a single camera is better than two if it means you&rsquo;ve got 13MP to play with on both sides of the phone - selfies deserve detail, too.</p> <p>The 5.9in screen is a great viewfinder, ColorOS offers scene modes (CyanogenMod has the standard Jelly Bean cam), and the rotating section means you can hold the phone in portrait and tilt the cam upwards for interesting angles. And in good light, outdoors, images look great, with vibrant colours, good contrast and - for the most part - accurate exposure. Blown up and side by side with images from the best smartphone snappers the N1&rsquo;s pics aren&rsquo;t the cleanest, but they are a cut above the norm.</p> <p>And if you want to snap pics of yourself? You can set the camera app to spring open when you rotate the lens towards you and there&rsquo;s even a beautify setting that will automatically pop up on portrait shots. We let the Oppo virtually paint our face in the style of a Tokyo teen makeover booth and it went so far as to pinch in our chipmunk cheeks. So not only does its 5.9in Full HD screen last a full day of messaging, browsing and gaming, but in ColorOS mode there&rsquo;s an excellent power saver, too. The eager to please N1 will even nag if you get to below 40% at night.</p> <p>Running CyanogenMod things are a little more pared back functionality-wise, but in our standard 720p video rundown test, at half brightness with Wi-Fi on, the Oppo gave the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-note-3/samsung-galaxy-note-3/review" target="_blank">Galaxy Note 3</a> some grief with a time of 9 hours 5 minutes.</p> <p>Whether on ColorOS or CyanogenMod, the N1 also knows how to make the most of a comparatively old processor, the Snapdragon 600.
