Likewise, tracking your meals and counting calories with apps is also a tedious process&mdash;hence the microwave? That could soon be the case, according to the MIT Technology Review.</p> <p>General Electric (GE) is currently testing a device that uses low-energy microwaves to estimate the number of calories in your food, and it&rsquo;s possible that the technology could be embedded in future microwave ovens (not seen above; that&rsquo;s just a regular microwave). Right now, it only works with blended foods by analyzing the fat and water content, as well as weight. However, GE says it&rsquo;s working on ways to, say, read the info from an entire plate of food.</p> <p>Such info could theoretically be automatically synced with a device for easy tracking. Paired with the food replicator in the works at Nestlé, we might be looking at yet another component of the kitchen of the future&mdash;emphasis on &ldquo;future,&rdquo; as it doesn&rsquo;t sound like this calorie-counting tech is all that close to being part of a consumer product.</p> <p>[Source:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.technologyreview.com/news/528721/ge-device-measures-the-calories-on-your-plate/">MIT Technology Review</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/google/fully-charged-nestle-s-food-replicator-plans-google-s-move-domain-registration-and-different-">Fully Charged: Nestlé&rsquo;s food replicator plans, Google&rsquo;s move into domain registration, and a different Forza Horizon 2 for each Xbox</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Samsung’s Gear VR headset image leaks, reveal planned for September? </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>We first&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/oculus/fully-charged-next-star-wars-film-dated-samsung-s-vr-headset-plans-and-big-hero-6-s-slick-new">heard a few weeks back</a>&nbsp;that Samsung was preparing an entry into the burgeoning virtual reality headset market&mdash;one that would allow the company&#39;s recent handsets to dock into it and use that display to view content&mdash;and now we have our first reported look at the hardware via this leaked render courtesy of SamMobile.</p> <p>Dubbed the Gear VR, the headset will feature a touch pad on the side&mdash;presumably for interacting with menus and perhaps even games&mdash;as well as a button that allows you to &ldquo;see through&rdquo; the screen via the device&rsquo;s back camera.</p> <p>The headset uses the phone&rsquo;s gyroscope and accelerometer for head tracking, and it&rsquo;ll fasten onto your head via the elastic strap on the back, with plush pads on either side of your head for comfort. And as leaked earlier, Oculus VR is&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/samsung-and-oculus-collaborating-phone-centric-vr-headset/news">reportedly developing the software</a>&nbsp;for the Gear VR in a technology swap with Samsung for the benefit of its own Rift headset.</p> <p>SamMobile says that Samsung will officially unveil the Gear VR at IFA 2014 in early September in Berlin, which is the same trade show that the Note 4 is expected to be shown at. Here&#39;s what&#39;s really tickled our retinas thus far.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/will-dunn" title="View user profile.">Will Dunn</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> SuperHOT </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>You can play the demo version of SuperHOT now at superhotgame.com, and we recommend you do: it&rsquo;s an interesting and very stylish take on first-person shooters. Run towards your enemies and they&rsquo;ll be able to shoot you without much trouble, but stand still and bullets travel through the air like coins falling through treacle. You don&rsquo;t get much in the way of weaponry in SuperHOT, but manage the time dilation right and you can weave through a hail of gunfire to despatch them.</p> <p>What Oculus brings to this, apart from a far more immersive first-person experience, is a finer level of control. You can physically lean to one side to avoid bullets in a way that isn&rsquo;t possible with a flat display. This makes bullet-avoidance more intuitive and more economical: because you&rsquo;re immersed in VR, you have much better depth perception and you only move as much as you need to avoid being shot in the face, before turning and watching with great satisfaction as the bullet flies ponderously over your shoulder.</p> <p>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/face-review-oculus-rift-crystal-cove/feature">Face-on with the Oculus Crystal Cove prototype</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/SUPERHOT_2.jpg?1405385624" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/SUPERHOT_6.jpg?1405385624" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Lucky’s Tale </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>We hadn&rsquo;t really thought about Oculus Rift as something you could use to play platform games, or really any game that doesn&rsquo;t use a first-person view, but this charming little jumpabout shows virtual reality can be a lot more versatile. It does feel weird for a minute or two as your brain adjusts to this new form of perception, but it soon becomes natural. Looking around also becomes a highly intuitive means of controlling the game: there are a few points when you have to take aim at something, and you do so by looking, without the game needing to tell you.</p> <p>One of the things we were most impressed by in <em>Lucky&rsquo;s Tale</em> was the main menu, a <em>Super Mario World</em>-esque map that you zoom in on just by leaning in towards it and peering around like a curious giant. It made us think about the possibilities for strategy games and even board games in virtual reality. You remain seated, holding controls just in front of you, but you get a great impression of movement. In the WW2 fighter&rsquo;s cockpit the Rift makes things easier, mainly because you can look out of the window. Positioning your plane in the right spot to swoop down on your enemies is one of the trickier parts of flying games, and it&rsquo;s a lot easier to pinpoint ground targets when you can just lean over and have a look. In a dogfight situation, too, it&rsquo;s handy to be able to fly while looking over your shoulder. The one upgrade it really needs is hand tracking: on the demo we played, we had to reach blindly for the flight stick and the throttle, so some virtual hands to use the virtual controls would make things a lot more convincing.</p> <p>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/oculus/oculus-rift-will-give-viewers-vr-look-david-attenborough-s-next-series/news">David Attenborough&#39;s next series will have scenes shot for Oculus Rift</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/USSR_March7th_5.jpg?1405385624" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1595" height="923" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/USSR_March7th_6.jpg?1405385624" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Eve: Valkyrie </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>One of the first games to really show what this new generation of virtual reality was capable of, Valkyrie&rsquo;s intergalactic dog-fighting is simple but effective, a bit like the X-Wing games of the &lsquo;90s. And a whole lot of them are soon to be out in the wild, as Oculus VR announced last night that Development Kit 2 pre-orders will begin shipping this month, with first units hitting developers the week of 14 July.</p> <p>That said, Oculus claims to have more than 45,000 pre-orders for the kit, but only about 10,000 headsets will actually make it out to developers during July. The rest should ship in August, bringing game and content developers a massively updated version of the highly-anticipated device.</p> <p>Development Kit 2 bumps the display resolution to 1080p and adds external motion tracking via a camera, which significantly reduces motion sickness for many players and allows for more immersive experiences. Oculus VR is still taking pre-orders for the unit, with new orders slated to ship in September, but just to stress this once more&mdash;it&rsquo;s development hardware, not a consumer-ready device. This is horrible, because you&rsquo;re turning your body away from the unsafe space that harbours the claws and teeth from which you&rsquo;re hiding, exposing the top of your head and the back of your neck. It gives you the wrong, prickly feeling you get when you turn your back on an empty doorway into an unlit room. Getting in a cupboard happens a lot in Alien: Isolation, because lockers and cupboards are your main survival tools. Hiding in a locker is the pretty much the only way to share a room with the creature and remain uneaten. Of the few hours I&rsquo;ve spent playing the game, perhaps half of that has been spent in a cupboard.&nbsp; You sneak breathlessly to another cupboard when the coast is clear, then watch in horror as the alien walks in and stands exactly where you were just standing, tasting the volume of air you&rsquo;ve just left. To check the coast is clear, you can lean forward and peer through the slits in the door (you don&rsquo;t want to do this if the alien is right outside), and in the flatscreen version you do this with the sticks. In the Oculus version, you lean your head forward and peer around. Then you look down at your proximity sensor, again by physically bending your soft, vulnerable neck, and you squeeze back out into the room.&nbsp;</p> <p>Then you realise it&rsquo;s waiting for you around the corner, listening, and you hear the <em>whung-whung-whung</em> of its feet on the metal floor and you scurry into the next room, as far back under the table as you can go, and it finds you anyway and drags you out and its jaws close over your face.</p> <p>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/playstation-4/tom-clancys-rainbow-six-siege-first-play/review">our First Play of <em>Rainbow Six: Seige</em></a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/7_1389089751.jpg?1404892671" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>As the loading screen returned, I wasn&rsquo;t sure I wanted another go. It&rsquo;s looking incredible and will be released next year.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="604" height="453" title="Zelda for Wii U: that&#039;s a big old world" alt="Zelda for Wii U: that&#039;s a big old world" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/legendofzelda-wiiu_0.jpg?1402675185" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-7"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Ubisoft </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Third-party powerhouse Ubisoft has already announced plans to show off <em>Far Cry 4</em> for the first time at its E3 press conference (scheduled for 11pm UK time on Monday 9th June), and it&rsquo;ll be flanked by <em><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/detaiuls-next-assassins-creed-game-have-leaked-and-its-called-unity/news">Assassin&rsquo;s Creed: Unity</a></em>, the French Revolution-set new-gen and PC entry.</p> <p>Rumors of a separate <em>Assassin&rsquo;s Creed</em> game for last-gen consoles could produce an interesting E3 result, otherwise we&rsquo;ll no doubt see open-world racer <em>The Crew</em> and the recently delayed <em>Tom Clancy&rsquo;s The Divisio</em>n, which is now set to launch in 2015.</p> <p><strong>Update 09/06/2014:</strong> A banner advertising <em>Assassin&#39;s Creed: Unity</em> at E3 hints at the game featuring four player co-op, <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2014-06-08-looks-like-assassins-creed-unity-has-four-player-co-op">reports Eurogamer</a>. There&rsquo;s a lot of unannounced things we can&rsquo;t talk about, but it&rsquo;s going to be a lot smaller, a lot lighter, cheaper, wider field of view, higher resolution and higher framerate. DK2 wasn&rsquo;t designed to be the thinnest or lightest thing we could make, or the cheapest for that matter: it was meant to be something we could get out quickly, that did all the functions we needed it to, very reliably. But it is a developer tool. We reused a lot of the same parts for DK2 that we used for DK1, because that allowed us to move a lot faster. But for the consumer version we&rsquo;re making every piece from the ground up. There isn&rsquo;t a single piece from DK1 or DK2 that will go into it, so we&rsquo;re able to design it from the beginning to be a perfectly integrated, minimal piece of hardware.&quot;</p> <p dir="ltr">This sounds expensive - we must be looking at a rather low margin on this thing. &quot; We&rsquo;re going to be selling it at cost,&quot; Luckey tells us. &quot;Whatever it costs us to make, that is what we&rsquo;re going to sell it for. That&rsquo;s one of the things the Facebook deal has allowed us to do: because we already have these resources behind us, we don&rsquo;t have to worry about making money from our customers right away. If we were running purely on our own and trying to make money just from hardware, we would need to make enough profit from each unit to pay for running the company for several years, until we launched the next one.&quot; </p> <p dir="ltr">[And that, folks, is why you only get a new console once every 5-7 years.] </p> <p dir="ltr">&quot; With Facebook, now we have that financial backing, we have the confidence that we&rsquo;re going to be around for a long time and we can afford to make the right decisions to make VR happen in a big way.&quot; </p> <p dir="ltr"><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/facebook/facebook-won-t-ruin-oculus-rift-it-ll-dramatically-broaden-its-horizons/feature">Opinion - why Facebook won&#39;t ruin Oculus</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> morpheus good, Antvr bad </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Oculus is also spending money on multiple first-party games studios: &ldquo;we&rsquo;re going to have teams based in Dallas, Irvine, Seattle and Menlo Park. A lot of people. And we&rsquo;re going to be publishing other studios&rsquo; content. So when will we see the first demos from Oculus&rsquo;s home-grown studios? &ldquo; You&rsquo;ll definitely see some demos from our studios by next E3,&rdquo; Luckey tells us.</p> <p>One of the signs you&rsquo;re doing something right is that everyone starts copying you, and this is especially true of Oculus. Surprisingly, Luckey is pleased that other companies are getting into VR.&nbsp;</p> <p>&quot; It&rsquo;s good to see other people in the VR market. It lets people know that VR isn&rsquo;t just this thing that one crazy company believes in, it&rsquo;s something that a lot of companies, even really big companies, believe in,&quot; he says. But while he&#39;s happy to see Sony joining in, Luckey isn&#39;t so happy about lower-end companies. &ldquo;Sony&rsquo;s hardware isn&rsquo;t up to where it needs to be, and neither is ours, but even though neither of us have a consumer product yet, we understand the problems and we know what we need to do to fix them. Other companies either don&rsquo;t understand the problems, or choose to ignore them, and I think that&rsquo;s dangerous. I don&rsquo;t want people to try VR and think it&rsquo;s garbage. It&rsquo;s not hard to release a consumer product - people release garbage consumer products all the time. ANTVR - they&rsquo;re saying Oculus doesn&rsquo;t have a consumer product yet, but out dev kit better than what they&rsquo;re selling to consumers. Just saying it&rsquo;s for consumers doesn&rsquo;t make it a good product.&quot;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sony/head-hands-and-eyes-sony-s-project-morpheus/feature">Face-on with Sony&#39;s Project Morpheus VR headset</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Oculus VR founder tells Stuff: we&#039;re going to sell Rift at cost price " alt="Oculus VR founder tells Stuff: we&#039;re going to sell Rift at cost price " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/luckey01.jpg?1402557809" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Oculus glass </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Does he see it replacing people&rsquo;s TVs? &quot;Yes. Disney and Lucasfilm might space out their planned Star Wars movies following the release of Episode VII late next year? Think again. The companies have just announced plans to debut the first standalone spinoff film&mdash;not part of the core saga&mdash;on 16 December 2016, just a year after Episode VII hits cinemas.</p> <p>And as with Episode VII, Disney has courted a director with proven ability handling a massive film franchise. In fact, the first standalone Star Wars will be directed by Gareth Edwards, who just scored a hit with the Godzilla reboot after making his debut with 2010&rsquo;s Monsters. Gary Whitta, a former video game journalist that penned The Book of Eli (but also After Earth), will write the script.</p> <p>Disney previously noted intentions to explore origin stories for Han Solo and Boba Fett in separate films, but it&rsquo;s not yet known what the first standalone flick will be about, and it&rsquo;s possible that we won&rsquo;t find out until after Episode VII makes it debut.</p> <p>[Source:&nbsp;<a href="http://starwars.com/news/gareth-edwards-and-gary-whitta-onboard-for-star-wars-stand-alone-film.html">Star Wars</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/star-wars-episode-vii-cast-revealed-ford-hamill-and-fisher-flanked-newcomers/news">Star Wars: Episode VII cast revealed: Ford, Hamill, and Fisher flanked by newcomers</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Samsung reportedly making its own VR headset </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Sources have indicated to Engadget that Samsung looks to follow the lead of Oculus and Sony and create its very own virtual reality headset&mdash;except it hopes to beat both to market. The eventual consumer headset is reportedly designed to work with next-generation Samsung phones and tablets, though its development model relies on current flagship devices.</p> <p>According to the site&rsquo;s sources, the Samsung VR headset features an OLED screen at least on par with that of the second Oculus Rift dev kit (pictured), and will likely feature a wired connection to devices to avoid latency issues. Samsung reportedly aims to undercut its rivals on price, as well, but it&rsquo;s unclear whether it&rsquo;ll have the same capabilities of its competitors-to-come.</p> <p>VR headsets are all about immersion, and admittedly, we can&rsquo;t see even a more advanced tablet or phone pumping out experiences like those of a PlayStation 4 or high-end PC. Is there really great demand for virtual reality on mobile devices? We may find out before long, and if any company has the money to push a product like this to the masses, it&rsquo;s Samsung.</p> <p>[Source:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2014/05/22/samsung-vr-headset/">Engadget</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/face-review-oculus-rift-crystal-cove/feature">Face-on review: Oculus Rift Crystal Cove, a bona fide VR revolution</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Oculus Rift" alt="Oculus Rift" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/oculusrift_1.jpg?1400896215" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> First Big Hero 6 trailer released </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Disney&rsquo;s in-house CG efforts were once a pale shadow of Pixar&rsquo;s, but after Wreck-It Ralph and especially Frozen, it&rsquo;s clear that the Mouse House can still generate some magic of its own. This can function as a pass-through camera (basically showing you a video feed of the outside world), which would definitely come in useful at times, but perhaps more interestingly could also be used as a Kinect-style body tracking device, turning your hands into controllers.</p> <p>&ldquo; In the early days of VR, it was all goggles and gloves,&rdquo; said Carmack. &ldquo;Nobody&rsquo;s talking about gloves now &ndash; it&rsquo;s going to be done with optical tracking. You want it to feel like a virtuoso with an instrument.&rdquo;</p> <p>There&rsquo;s even talk of adding haptic feedback, which would allow your body to &ldquo;feel&rdquo; a pushback from the virtual worlds in which you&rsquo;re travelling (although that, presumably, would require some form of glove).</p> <p>It&rsquo;s compelling stuff, truly &ndash; and we can&rsquo;t wait to see what else Oculus VR has in store for the Rift.
