The minute I opened my eyes, I wasn&#39;t in a small white demo room in Germany anymore. I was in a bright cartoon world, high above a vast body of water.</p> <p>Leaning over the edge brought the drop into view, and as butterflies flitted around my face, I found myself instinctively reaching out to grab them.</p> <p>I was a bit taken out of the experience however, when I couldn&#39;t see my own arms in front of my face. As Lucky moved, the camera automatically followed him around, occasionally zooming in to help navigate tricky walkways.</p> <p>I also found myself naturally peering in closer to objects like flowers and mushrooms to get a better look at them; made possible by the same head-tracking LED lights from the Crystal Cove iteration, although on the DK2 they&#39;re hidden from view.&nbsp;</p> <p>A camera tracks these LEDs, which allows your head to be tracked in 3D space, letting you peer around objects and adding an impressive layer of immersion.</p> <p>After guiding Lucky to the end of the level, I had to throw some bombs at a few targets. Aiming was taken care of with my head. I simply looked where I wanted to aim, and pressed the trigger. Simple.</p> <p>By this point I know I&#39;ll be snapping up a Rift on launch day, and it occured to me that I didn&#39;t feel sick.</p> <p>Many users of past iterations of the Rift have complained about motion sickness, but the DK2 has a higher framerate, reducing motion blur which Oculus tells us all but eradicates motion sickness.</p> <p>I tend to deal with motion in games quite well anyway (Mirror&#39;s Edge on a projector didn&#39;t phase me), so it&#39;s hard for me to say if my lack of discomfort was down to the increased frame rate or not.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="600" height="449" title="Under the hood" alt="Oculus Rift Dev Kit 2: eyes-on preview at Gamescom 2014" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Untitled-4_1.jpg?1408457887" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="600" height="451" title="Bombs away" alt="Oculus Rift Dev Kit 2: eyes-on preview at Gamescom 2014" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Untitled-2_3.jpg?1408457887" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> SuperHot </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><iframe frameborder="0" height="300" scrolling="no" src="http://gfycat.com/ifr/MessyWateryHare" width="620"></iframe></p> <p>You might already be familiar with this successful Kickstarter title, an FPS that pits you agains hordes of low-poly red goons; the catch is that time moves only when you do, with bullets leaving Matrix-style trails in the air as you weave among them.</p> <p>I&#39;d played the free online demo about 50 times before in the past, but the Rift made it even better.</p> <p>It began by peeking around a corner at a group of enemies at the other end of a corridor. Rounding a corner, the window to my right shattered, showering me with glass and putting me right in the path of a line of bullets.&nbsp;</p> <p>I instinctively ducked as I moved forward, and this simple reflex saved my virtual life, sending the bullets harmlessly above my head.&nbsp;</p> <p>As I made my way closer to the enemies, they fired off multiple shots each. I rushed forward to reach my gun, then froze.&nbsp;</p> <p>In front of me was a wall of bullets, but rather than duck, I opted to go full Neo.</p> <p><iframe frameborder="0" height="300" scrolling="no" src="http://gfycat.com/ifr/UnrealisticSparseBunny" width="620"></iframe></p> <p>Slowly creeping forward, I weaved between the deadly peppering, and marvelled at a single bullet as it missed my face by centimetres.</p> <p>I turned my head sideways and again, instinctively reached my hand out to catch the bullet in mid flight, such was my level of immersion.</p> <p>And then, sadly, it was over. The King of Kong director Seth Gordon is set to helm the flick.</p> <p>The Amazing Spider-Man 3 will launch in 2018 instead, putting a surprising four-year gap between sequels, but it won&rsquo;t be the next time we see the Spider-Man movie universe in action: Sinister Six, which spotlights the web-head&rsquo;s most notable villains, is set to debut on 11 November 2016.</p> <p>[Source: <a href="http://www.deadline.com/2014/07/sony-spider-man-sinister-six-playstation-uncharted/">Deadline</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/e3-2014-six-things-sony-s-ps4-event-you-need-see/feature">PlayStation at E3 2014: Six things from Sony&rsquo;s PS4 event that you need to see</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> The Steam Controller adds an analog stick </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Valve aims to shake up the PC gaming market with its TV-centric Steam Machines initiative&mdash;and shake it up even further with the Steam Controller, which features large touch panels that dominate the face of the peripheral. Here&#39;s what&#39;s really tickled our retinas thus far.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/will-dunn" title="View user profile.">Will Dunn</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> SuperHOT </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>You can play the demo version of SuperHOT now at superhotgame.com, and we recommend you do: it&rsquo;s an interesting and very stylish take on first-person shooters. What sets SuperHOT apart from the crowd is time: it moves only when you move. Run towards your enemies and they&rsquo;ll be able to shoot you without much trouble, but stand still and bullets travel through the air like coins falling through treacle. You don&rsquo;t get much in the way of weaponry in SuperHOT, but manage the time dilation right and you can weave through a hail of gunfire to despatch them.</p> <p>What Oculus brings to this, apart from a far more immersive first-person experience, is a finer level of control. You can physically lean to one side to avoid bullets in a way that isn&rsquo;t possible with a flat display. This makes bullet-avoidance more intuitive and more economical: because you&rsquo;re immersed in VR, you have much better depth perception and you only move as much as you need to avoid being shot in the face, before turning and watching with great satisfaction as the bullet flies ponderously over your shoulder.</p> <p>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/face-review-oculus-rift-crystal-cove/feature">Face-on with the Oculus Crystal Cove prototype</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/SUPERHOT_2.jpg?1405385624" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/SUPERHOT_6.jpg?1405385624" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Lucky’s Tale </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>We hadn&rsquo;t really thought about Oculus Rift as something you could use to play platform games, or really any game that doesn&rsquo;t use a first-person view, but this charming little jumpabout shows virtual reality can be a lot more versatile. It does feel weird for a minute or two as your brain adjusts to this new form of perception, but it soon becomes natural. Looking around also becomes a highly intuitive means of controlling the game: there are a few points when you have to take aim at something, and you do so by looking, without the game needing to tell you.</p> <p>One of the things we were most impressed by in <em>Lucky&rsquo;s Tale</em> was the main menu, a <em>Super Mario World</em>-esque map that you zoom in on just by leaning in towards it and peering around like a curious giant. It made us think about the possibilities for strategy games and even board games in virtual reality. But while lengthy tank battles will remain the preserve of flatscreen players, we took one of War Thunder&rsquo;s fighter planes for a spin in Oculus and it was enormous fun.</p> <p>Flying games (and racing games) are perfect for VR, because they&rsquo;re about moving around while sitting still, and that&rsquo;s also exactly what you&rsquo;re doing in VR. You remain seated, holding controls just in front of you, but you get a great impression of movement. In the WW2 fighter&rsquo;s cockpit the Rift makes things easier, mainly because you can look out of the window. Positioning your plane in the right spot to swoop down on your enemies is one of the trickier parts of flying games, and it&rsquo;s a lot easier to pinpoint ground targets when you can just lean over and have a look. In a dogfight situation, too, it&rsquo;s handy to be able to fly while looking over your shoulder. The one upgrade it really needs is hand tracking: on the demo we played, we had to reach blindly for the flight stick and the throttle, so some virtual hands to use the virtual controls would make things a lot more convincing.</p> <p>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/oculus/oculus-rift-will-give-viewers-vr-look-david-attenborough-s-next-series/news">David Attenborough&#39;s next series will have scenes shot for Oculus Rift</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/USSR_March7th_5.jpg?1405385624" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1595" height="923" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/USSR_March7th_6.jpg?1405385624" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Eve: Valkyrie </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>One of the first games to really show what this new generation of virtual reality was capable of, Valkyrie&rsquo;s intergalactic dog-fighting is simple but effective, a bit like the X-Wing games of the &lsquo;90s. With Project Tango&rsquo;s augmented reality and world-mapping abilities, the robots should be able to perform tasks throughout the station and perhaps replace many of the everyday tasks that astronauts must perform while aboard.</p> <p>And while developers are slated to get access to <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/google/google-s-3d-depth-sensing-project-tango-tablet-development-kit-unveiled/news">Project Tango kits later this year</a> and consumers will have to wait until 2015 to get <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/google/google-io-2014/lg-will-release-consumer-version-google-s-3d-mapping-project-tango-tablet-2015">an LG-branded tablet</a>, astronauts will have the tech in space within days&mdash;the handsets are set to take off on a cargo spacecraft this Friday, 11 July.</p> <p>[Source: <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/07/07/us-nasa-google-idUSKBN0FC0ZJ20140707">Reuters</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/google/google-equipping-tablets-3d-mapping-project-tango-tech/news">Google &ldquo;equipping tablets with 3D mapping Project Tango tech&rdquo;</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Oculus announces Connect conference for September </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>It seems like things are really heating up for Oculus VR and its Rift headset. BlackBerry came in third, down to 15% (from 16.8%), while HTC, Nokia, Sony, Google, and Motorola each represented 3.1% or less of the UK traffic apiece during the span.</p> <p>Chitaka&rsquo;s analysis says that Apple and Samsung are likely to remain the leaders in this space&mdash;no real surprise&mdash;and that BlackBerry&rsquo;s sinking tally shows handset owners likely moving towards other devices; again, stop us if you&rsquo;ve heard this one before.</p> <p>However, the report summary fails to acknowledge the pending launch of Amazon&rsquo;s Fire Phone&mdash;which, granted, doesn&rsquo;t yet have a UK release target. From there, the atmospheric game promises &ldquo;no controls,&rdquo; that &ldquo;things grow and things die&rdquo; and &ldquo;nature expresses itself,&rdquo; and amusingly, &ldquo;~ 50 hours of gameplay.&rdquo;</p> <p>Anyone put off by experimental art games will have already stopped reading before the end of that sentence, but those with more of an open mind can check it out on any platform today for just &pound;1.</p> <p>[Sources: <a href="http://mountain-game.com">Mountain</a>, <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/mtn/id891528055?ls=1&amp;mt=8">App Store</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/clever-computers-top-25-artificial-intelligences-film/feature">From HAL to &lsquo; Her&rsquo;: the top 24 artificial intelligences on film</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Songza acquired by Google, will continue running </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>As rumoured last month, Google went ahead and acquired streaming music service Songza, the companies announced yesterday. There&rsquo;s a lot of unannounced things we can&rsquo;t talk about, but it&rsquo;s going to be a lot smaller, a lot lighter, cheaper, wider field of view, higher resolution and higher framerate. DK2 wasn&rsquo;t designed to be the thinnest or lightest thing we could make, or the cheapest for that matter: it was meant to be something we could get out quickly, that did all the functions we needed it to, very reliably. But it is a developer tool. We reused a lot of the same parts for DK2 that we used for DK1, because that allowed us to move a lot faster. But for the consumer version we&rsquo;re making every piece from the ground up. There isn&rsquo;t a single piece from DK1 or DK2 that will go into it, so we&rsquo;re able to design it from the beginning to be a perfectly integrated, minimal piece of hardware.&quot;</p> <p dir="ltr">This sounds expensive - we must be looking at a rather low margin on this thing. &quot; We&rsquo;re going to be selling it at cost,&quot; Luckey tells us. &quot;Whatever it costs us to make, that is what we&rsquo;re going to sell it for. That&rsquo;s one of the things the Facebook deal has allowed us to do: because we already have these resources behind us, we don&rsquo;t have to worry about making money from our customers right away. If we were running purely on our own and trying to make money just from hardware, we would need to make enough profit from each unit to pay for running the company for several years, until we launched the next one.&quot; </p> <p dir="ltr">[And that, folks, is why you only get a new console once every 5-7 years.] </p> <p dir="ltr">&quot; With Facebook, now we have that financial backing, we have the confidence that we&rsquo;re going to be around for a long time and we can afford to make the right decisions to make VR happen in a big way.&quot; </p> <p dir="ltr"><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/facebook/facebook-won-t-ruin-oculus-rift-it-ll-dramatically-broaden-its-horizons/feature">Opinion - why Facebook won&#39;t ruin Oculus</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> morpheus good, Antvr bad </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Oculus is also spending money on multiple first-party games studios: &ldquo;we&rsquo;re going to have teams based in Dallas, Irvine, Seattle and Menlo Park. So when will we see the first demos from Oculus&rsquo;s home-grown studios? &ldquo; You&rsquo;ll definitely see some demos from our studios by next E3,&rdquo; Luckey tells us.</p> <p>One of the signs you&rsquo;re doing something right is that everyone starts copying you, and this is especially true of Oculus. Surprisingly, Luckey is pleased that other companies are getting into VR.&nbsp;</p> <p>&quot; It&rsquo;s good to see other people in the VR market. It lets people know that VR isn&rsquo;t just this thing that one crazy company believes in, it&rsquo;s something that a lot of companies, even really big companies, believe in,&quot; he says. But while he&#39;s happy to see Sony joining in, Luckey isn&#39;t so happy about lower-end companies. &ldquo;Sony&rsquo;s hardware isn&rsquo;t up to where it needs to be, and neither is ours, but even though neither of us have a consumer product yet, we understand the problems and we know what we need to do to fix them. Other companies either don&rsquo;t understand the problems, or choose to ignore them, and I think that&rsquo;s dangerous. I don&rsquo;t want people to try VR and think it&rsquo;s garbage. It&rsquo;s not hard to release a consumer product - people release garbage consumer products all the time. ANTVR - they&rsquo;re saying Oculus doesn&rsquo;t have a consumer product yet, but out dev kit better than what they&rsquo;re selling to consumers. Just saying it&rsquo;s for consumers doesn&rsquo;t make it a good product.&quot;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sony/head-hands-and-eyes-sony-s-project-morpheus/feature">Face-on with Sony&#39;s Project Morpheus VR headset</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Oculus VR founder tells Stuff: we&#039;re going to sell Rift at cost price " alt="Oculus VR founder tells Stuff: we&#039;re going to sell Rift at cost price " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/luckey01.jpg?1402557809" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Oculus glass </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Does he see it replacing people&rsquo;s TVs? &quot;Yes. it&rsquo;s easy to forget that it&rsquo;s still a long way from being a real product &ndash; the first commercial Rift headset most likely won&rsquo;t be on sale until next year.</p> <p>And by the time it rolls around, it&rsquo;ll be significantly different from the current Developer Kit 2 prototype. At least that&rsquo;s a suggestion made by Oculus VR Chief Technology Officer (not to mention <em>Doom</em> and <em>Quake</em> co-creator) John Carmack.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/sam-kieldsen" title="View user profile.">Sam Kieldsen</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Carmack told Wired that the company is working on installing an outward-facing camera on the headset. This can function as a pass-through camera (basically showing you a video feed of the outside world), which would definitely come in useful at times, but perhaps more interestingly could also be used as a Kinect-style body tracking device, turning your hands into controllers.</p> <p>&ldquo; In the early days of VR, it was all goggles and gloves,&rdquo; said Carmack. &ldquo;Nobody&rsquo;s talking about gloves now &ndash; it&rsquo;s going to be done with optical tracking. You want it to feel like a virtuoso with an instrument.&rdquo;</p> <p>There&rsquo;s even talk of adding haptic feedback, which would allow your body to &ldquo;feel&rdquo; a pushback from the virtual worlds in which you&rsquo;re travelling (although that, presumably, would require some form of glove).</p> <p>It&rsquo;s compelling stuff, truly &ndash; and we can&rsquo;t wait to see what else Oculus VR has in store for the Rift. In the meantime, we suggest you have a look at Wired&rsquo;s profile and history of the company and its technology &ndash; it&rsquo;s a great read.</p> <p>[Via <a href="http://www.wired.com/2014/05/oculus-rift-4/">Wired</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/oculus/next-gen-oculus-rift-coming-and-twice-good-current-version/news">Next-gen Oculus Rift is coming and &ldquo;twice as good&rdquo; as the current version</a></strong></p> <p><iframe frameborder="0" height="180" src="http://pages.haymarket.com/stuff_signup/enews_embed" width="300"></iframe></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="Consumer Oculus Rift may track your hands as well as your head" alt="Consumer Oculus Rift may track your hands as well as your head" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/crystal%20cove_0_0.jpg?1400762299" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/oculus/consumer-oculus-rift-may-track-your-hands-well-your-head/news" target="_blank">read more</a></p> Gaming Oculus Rift Wed, 21 May 2014 10:14:52 +0000 Sam Kieldsen 1437560 at http://www.stuff.tv Oculus Rift and Birdly let you soar like an eagle http://www.stuff.tv/oculus/oculus-rift-and-birdly-let-you-soar-eagle/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> You’ll believe you can fly with this flappy virtual reality setup </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Oculus Rift and Birdly let you soar like an eagle" alt="Oculus Rift and Birdly let you soar like an eagle" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/birdly.jpg?1400255014" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>Ever wanted to fly like a majestic falcon? Well, now you can &ndash; or at least, you can get as close to it as possible without making a pair of giant wax wings, calling yourself Icarus and jumping off a cliff.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s thanks to Oculus Rift (of course!). The virtual reality headset, teamed up with a new experimental &ldquo;full body flight simulator&rdquo; dubbed Birdly, allows wearers to soar around a computer-generated environment like a bird of prey (a red kite, to be precise), using their head movements to steer and their arms to flap a pair of wing controllers.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/sam-kieldsen" title="View user profile.">Sam Kieldsen</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Users lie face down on the Birdly, strapping their arms into the movable wings and donning the Oculus Rift headset. Arm movements directly correlate to the bird&rsquo;s wings. Meanwhile, a fan placed in front of the user&rsquo;s face gives a sense of speed (the fan&rsquo;s speed increases as you fly faster) as well as wafting relevant aromas like dirt and leaves into their nostrils.</p> <p>Birdly was created by a team at the Zurich University of the Arts, and you&rsquo;re more likely to encounter it as an art installation than as an actual product. Still, it&rsquo;s yet another entry on the list of &ldquo;interesting non-gaming things the Oculus Rift can do&rdquo;.</p> <p>[<a href="http://birdly.zhdk.ch/en/">Birdly</a> via <a href="http://www.cnet.com/uk/news/virtual-reality-bird-machine-gives-you-the-wings-of-an-awkward-eagle/">CNET</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/oculus/oculus-rift/review">Oculus Rift preview</a></strong></p> <p><iframe frameborder="0" height="180" src="http://pages.haymarket.com/stuff_signup/enews_embed" width="300"></iframe></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/h1b0WtJI9Bo" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/birdly-rig.jpg?1400255014" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-carousel-item"><legend>Carousel Extras</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-text field-field-carousel-item-title"> <div class="field-label">Carousel item title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Fly like a bird with Oculus Rift </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/oculus/oculus-rift-and-birdly-let-you-soar-eagle/news" target="_blank">read more</a></p> Oculus Rift Fri, 09 May 2014 13:00:44 +0000 Sam Kieldsen 1436825 at http://www.stuff.tv Next-gen Oculus Rift is coming and “twice as good” as the current version http://www.stuff.tv/oculus/next-gen-oculus-rift-coming-and-twice-good-current-version/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Oculus VR investor says the company is testing a far more realistic headset in a “special room” </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Next-gen Oculus Rift is coming and “twice as good” as the current version" alt="Next-gen Oculus Rift is coming and “twice as good” as the current version" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/oculus-rift-dk2-02.jpg?1399018807" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>You&rsquo;re probably excited about the prospect of getting your hands on the Oculus Rift Development Kit 2, the current latest edition of the VR headset &ndash; but according to one Oculus investor, it&rsquo;s just the tip of the iceberg,</p> <p>At Facebook&rsquo;s F8 conference this week, Chris Dixon, a partner at Silicon Valley venture capitalist firm Andreessen Horowitz (an investor in Oculus VR), claimed that the company is currently testing something incredible inside its Los Angeles HQ.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/sam-kieldsen" title="View user profile.">Sam Kieldsen</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> The mythical Valve Room </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Dixon told Business Insider: &ldquo;Crystal Cove is 50 percent of what they are running in LA.
