That said, it felt comfortable and not too heavy, even with a Galaxy Note 3 slotted into the front. The <a href="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2041280918/vrase-the-smartphone-virtual-reality-case" target="_blank">vrAse Kickstarter page</a> says you can use most new smartphones, including the iPhone 5/5S, the HTC One, Xperia Z and Galaxy S4, in the same case.&nbsp;</p> <p>The kit might look a little home-made, but the visuals are really surprising, in a good way. We didn&#39;t have a first-generation Oculus Rift on hand to compare, but it&#39;s a very similar (and, dare we say it, possibly slightly superior) experience. We played a couple of basic, Unity-based demo games and experienced the same exhilirating vertigo of being able to look around a 3D scene with a turn of the head.</p> <p>Because you&#39;re looking at a phone screen through a set of magnifying glasses, pixels are clearly visible, meaning a vrAse with a Note 3 can&#39;t compete with <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/oculus/hands-oculus-rift-v2-believe-vr-hype/feature" target="_blank">newer Oculus models</a>, especially <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/face-review-oculus-rift-crystal-cove/feature" target="_blank">the next-gen Crystal Cove</a>. But that&#39;s using a Note 3, which has a pixel density of 386ppi. The vrAse has the advantage that it gets a display upgrade when you get a new phone, so slot in an <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/find-7/oppo-find-7/review" target="_blank">Oppo Find 7</a> with its 538ppi screen, and those pixels may well shrink out of sight.&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Wearables Week: face-on with vrAse, the £60 Oculus Rift" alt="Wearables Week: face-on with vrAse, the £60 Oculus Rift" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/vrAse02.jpg?1396617425" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> open, affordable and ar-ready </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The big advantages for the vrAse, though, are the price and the open nature of the platform. Francisco Hernandez, Eyedak&#39;s COO, told us that the vrAse would sell for &quot;less than $100&quot;, and that it would take a small team of developers &quot;a couple of days&quot; to adapt even a detailed Android game like&nbsp;<em>Grand Theft Auto III</em> for full face-mounted 3D. Video is even easier: because the system uses side-by-side 3D, there&#39;s no fancy polarisation or timing required, it&#39;s simply a matter of splitting the screen to show two angles.&nbsp;</p> <p>There are further advantages to using your phone, too - because you have a camera on the back of your phone, the vrAse could make for some very interesting augmented reality apps, and because there&#39;s no need to link it to another device (other than possibly a game controller), it&#39;s battery-powered and highly portable.&nbsp;</p> <p>In the next year or so, the billion-dollar VR frontrunners are likely to offer a more impressive, immersive experience, but we like the simplicity, the affordability and the open nature of the vrAse. Eyedak says it&#39;ll be going on sale in autumn or winter this year.&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Wearables Week: face-on with vrAse, the £60 Oculus Rift" alt="Wearables Week: face-on with vrAse, the £60 Oculus Rift" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/vrAse01_0.jpg?1396617425" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-carousel-item"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-text field-field-carousel-item-title"> <div class="field-label">Carousel item title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> vrAse: face-on with the £60 Oculus Rift </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/wearables-week-face-vrase-60-oculus-rift/feature" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/wearables-week-face-vrase-60-oculus-rift/feature#comments Oculus Tue, 01 Apr 2014 11:29:30 +0000 Will Dunn 1434637 at http://www.stuff.tv Facebook won’t ruin Oculus Rift – it’ll dramatically broaden its horizons http://www.stuff.tv/facebook/facebook-won-t-ruin-oculus-rift-it-ll-dramatically-broaden-its-horizons/feature <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Mark Zuckerberg thinks the VR headset could be the next big communication platform. We then tried a prototype that December, stating that &quot; The experience of floating through the virtual environment is so natural that it&rsquo;s easy to forget that we&#39;re still sitting in an office chair rather than roving through an industrial landscape hunting zombies.&quot;</p> <p>In January this year, I tried two new versions - Oculus Rift HD and the Crystal Cove prototype. I was blown away by what I saw. At that point I&rsquo;d only seen it demoed with games, but the advances in movement tracking already made it clear just how effective the Rift could be when put to non-gaming uses. And that&rsquo;s clearly what Zuckerberg has in mind for it.</p> <p>His statement on the purchase says: <em>&quot; Our mission is to make the world more open and connected. For the past few years, this has mostly meant building mobile apps&hellip; but at this point we feel we&#39;re in a position where we can start focusing on what platforms will come next to enable even more useful, entertaining and personal experiences. Instead of using Facebook to organise nights out, it could be the night out, providing the requisite connections and hardware for you to have a pint with chums in a virtual environment just about anywhere in the world (or even out of it).</p> <p dir="ltr">Here&rsquo;s hoping the rest of <em>Total Recall</em> is more fanciful.</p> <p dir="ltr">One question: Could wearing VR headsets actually become a normal thing to do? We didn&rsquo;t &lsquo;second screen&rsquo;. I initially scoffed at the idea of anyone outside of gaming circles strapping on a Rift (partially because getting people to wear 3D glasses at home was a bridge too far). This screen is divided into two parts (one for the left eye and one for the right), meaning each eye sees a separate 640 x 800 image. Thus, the wearer sees a 3D image.</p> <p>It keeps tabs on your head orientation through a combination of 3-axis gyroscopes, accelerometers and magnetometers, allowing it to track you through 360 degrees without any drift.</p> <p>Dials on each side of the headset can be used to adjust the distance between between the displays and the wearer&rsquo;s eyes, and there are interchangeable lenses included that allow some measure of dioptric correction (for people who are either short- or long-sighted).</p> <p>It weighs 369g, which Oculus claims is equivalent to &ldquo;a heavy pair of ski goggles&rdquo;. There&rsquo;s also a separate control box which connects to the headset via a cable, and into which you plug your source device via HDMI or DVI, plus USB for the transfer of tracking info.</p> <p>The consumer version of Oculus Rift is expected to be somewhat different. While the company has yet to confirm its specifications, it&rsquo;s likely to take most of its cues from the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/face-review-oculus-rift-crystal-cove/feature" target="_blank">Crystal Cove prototype</a> we had a chance to use at CES back in January.</p> <p>Crystal Cove has a 1920 x 1080 OLED screen that not only boasts more pixels but also faster pixels: they can turn off and on more rapidly, which all but eliminates lag and blur (and therefore reduces the potential for motion sickness). It also offers far more advanced tracking that is aware of your head&rsquo;s position in 3D space and not just its orientation. That means you can duck, lean and tilt. Crystal Cove is a marked step up from the developer kit version, in other words &ndash; and we expect the consumer Oculus Rift to be similarly superior.</p> <p><strong>UPDATE 19/03/14:</strong> Oculus has debuted the Rift Development Kit 2 at GDC 2014 and, while it isn&#39;t the final consumer edition, it incorporates all the improvements from both the v2 prototype and Crystal Cove. Pre-orders can be made now (it&#39;s US$350) and will be shipped out from July 2014.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/OlXrjTh7vHc" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Oculus Rift developer edition" alt="Oculus Rift developer edition" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/oculus-rift-goggle-view.jpg?1395257896" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Oculus Rift in use" alt="Oculus Rift in use" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/oculus-rift-in-use.jpg?1395257896" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Cable-free tracking? </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>One issue you could level at Oculus Rift is that the headset connects to your computer or console via wires. The level of immersion is incredible &ndash; in <em>EVE Valkyrie</em>, for instance, you can look around your spaceship&rsquo;s cockpit with Rift while piloting it with the regular controller. The potential for any first-person view game is obvious, it&#39;ll draw you into these worlds like never before.</p> <p>The main issue that can arise is motion sickness &ndash; particularly when the screen&#39;s view moves when your head doesn&#39;t and vice versa &ndash; but Oculus is working to fix that by adding positional head-tracking and faster-refreshing screens.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/oculus/hands-oculus-rift-v2-believe-vr-hype/feature" target="_blank">Hands-on with Oculus Rift v2: believe the VR hype</a></strong></p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/face-review-oculus-rift-crystal-cove/feature" target="_blank">Face-on review: Oculus Rift Crystal Cove, a bona fide VR revolution</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper brightcove-player-wrapper"> <script language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript" src="http://admin.brightcove.com/js/BrightcoveExperiences.js"></script> <script src="http://admin.brightcove.com/js/APIModules_all.js"></script> <div class="brightcove-player"> <object id="myExperience-2865051706001" class="BrightcoveExperience"> <param name="bgcolor" value="#000000" /> <param name="playerID" value="" /> <param name="playerKey" value="AQ~~,AAAAEgPmGlk~,Fzd-TvXcznw-P3piHaryQBMeIzWITldz" /> <param name="isVid" value="true" /> <param name="isUI" value="true" /> <param name="dynamicStreaming" value="true" /> <param name="@videoPlayer" value="2865051706001" /> <param name="autoStart" value="" /> <param name="htmlFallback" value="true" /> <param name="includeAPI" value="true" /> <param name="templateLoadHandler" value="brightcoveTemplateLoaded" /> <param name="width" value="640px" /> <param name="height" value="360px" /> </object> <!-- This script tag will cause the Brightcove Players defined above it to be created as soon as the line is read by the browser. Click the image above to see a gif of it in action.</p> <p>Should you possess an Oculus Rift and a masochistic streak, you can get hold of Floculus Bird <a href="http://holdenlink.com/project/floculus-bird/">here</a> (it&rsquo;s free). </p><p><strong>[Source: <a href="http://www.psfk.com/2014/02/floculus-bird-flappy-bird.html#!wdglw">PSFK</a>]</strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="500" height="363" title="Oculus Rift puts gamers in Flappy Bird’s feathers" alt="Oculus Rift puts gamers in Flappy Bird’s feathers" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/tumblr_n0wi03scBM1qav3uso3_r1_500.gif?1392718381" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Yum! Insects are high in protein and important minerals, you see, and many predict that with meat due to become an expensive rarity in the not-too-distant future, bug-paste could prove an important food source.</p> <p>The problem? Most people don&rsquo;t like the idea of eating insects. And pretty-looking 3D printed creations made of insect flour and water are somewhat more palatable than a plateful of sauteed crickets. But don&rsquo;t expect to be chewing on shaped bug snacks particularly soon: the substance will probably find a use as animal feed in the medium term while food regulators get their heads around the idea.</p> <p><strong>[Source: <a href="http://www.3dprinter.net/turning-insects-3d-printed-snacks">3D Printer</a>]</strong></p> <p><strong>READ MORE:</strong> <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/would-you-eat-3d-printed-pizza/news">Would you eat a 3D printed pizza?</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Yum!
