With the rugby season in full flow – the dust settling on the Autumn Internationals, the Heinken Cup and Aviva Premiership well under way – the season's winners, losers and talking points are taking shape. We’ve pulled together five of our favourite apps to help you brush up on your rugby knowledge, keep up to date with the latest news and allow you to stream great video and audio content direct to your mobile device. This is all made smooth, quick and hassle free by super fast and reliable 4G.
O2 Matchday (iOS, Android) - £free
If you’ve ever wondered what the ref was saying to the players or why he made that decision, O2’s Matchday app will help you find out. Giving you a unique insight into every England home game, it gets you as close to the ref as the players on the pitch, by giving a live feed direct from the ref’s mic to your device. Elsewhere you’ll get match previews, team line-ups, the players to watch and in-game stats so you’re loaded with all the information you need down the pub. You’ll also get exclusive England rugby videos, interviews and pre match access.
Official Rugby Football Union app (iOS) - £free
Developed in partnership with O2, the Official RFU iPhone app is the best way to keep updated with everything to do with English rugby, from grassroots right up to the England team and the Aviva Premeirship. You can stay informed on England games directly through your phone thanks to a real-time text commentary, plus all the match stats, team line-ups and score updates you’ll need, delivered as it happens. There’s also exclusive offers, a virtual tour of Twickenham stadium and stacks of exclusive video and audio content from RFU.com, which can be streamed and viewed quickly and smoothly wherever you are.
Flick Kick Rugby Kickoff (iOS, Android) - £free
An enjoyable little slice of free (ad-supported gaming). Do your best Johnny Walker impression using just your index finger to flick a rugby ball through a set of virtual posts, gaining points for accuracy, successive goals, or the number of goals scored within a set time. The game’s physics are spot on and the high-res graphics look the part. You’d think that repeatedly flicking a rugby ball through the uprights would get old, but Flick Kick Rugby Kickoff is in fact horribly addictive: you’ll be trying to beat your best score well into the small hours.
More after the break...
Ultimate Rugby (iOS, Android)- £free
If you’re a fan of rugby worldwide, Ultimate Rugby offers plenty to keep you occupied, allowing you to stay connected with all the clubs and scores in from both the Northern and Southern hemispheres. But not just that, you are able to pick favourite leagues, teams and players from across the world, following any news on them in your own personalised news stream. All this alongside comprehensive match coverage, team stats and video highlights of all Tier One rugby matches worldwide – it’s a one stop shop for all things rugby.
IRB Laws of Rugby (iOS) - £free
If your rugby knowledge needs a bit of a refresh, the IRB Laws of Rugby app should help you to get back up to scratch. Totally revised this year, it features all the laws, regulations and referee signals, alongside nearly 300 videos (80 embedded and 200 more to view online) and stacks of photos. Once you think you know it all, there’s a laws quiz, plus all the variations for other game setups (such as Sevens).
