It&rsquo;s expected out in September, so we&rsquo;ll hopefully hear more about what makes this pocket-unfriendly option a worthwhile entry into the market before then.</p> <p>[Sources: <a href="http://www.theverge.com/2014/6/19/5825078/the-passport-is-blackberrys-strangest-phone-ever">The Verge</a>, <a href="https://twitter.com/dj_friend/status/479653747350851584">Twitter</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/blackberry/mwc-2014/blackberry-goes-back-its-roots-q20-smartphone/news">BlackBerry goes back to its roots with the Q20 smartphone</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="675" title="BlackBerry Passport" alt="BlackBerry Passport" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/blackberry-passport.jpeg?1403492413" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Nokia releases the slick Z Launcher for Android </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="300" mozallowfullscreen="" src="//player.vimeo.com/video/98567567?color=ffffff" webkitallowfullscreen="" width="534"></iframe></p> <p>Microsoft acquired Nokia&rsquo;s existing mobile efforts earlier this year, but there&rsquo;s still some phone-focused talent left at the Finnish company&mdash;and if yesterday&rsquo;s release of an Android launcher is any indication, they seem interested in trying their hand at something new.</p> <p>The Z Launcher&mdash;available now in a limited pre-beta release&mdash;is a predictive option that learns from the apps you use and people you interact with, using that info to better present you with the choices you want at the right times of day. You now get the incredibly useful Action Centre - a quick settings and notifications pulldown - plus a new suite of usage monitoring apps including Battery Saver, Data Sense and Storage Sense. All of these help elevate WinPho to Android levels of practicality and customisation.</p> <p>OK, so these features have been in Android for years. But we like them all the same.</p> <p>Multi-tasking is now a longpress on the back button and Microsoft&rsquo;s Live Tiles, which display apps dynamically on the homescreen, get some attention too. More tiles can be added to the Start screen and a photo can be set as the background to icons that don&rsquo;t pull in images. Nice touch.</p> <p>Microsoft extras include mobile Office and its cloud service SkyDrive baked in. Nokia adds offline HERE Maps, superb free navigation app HERE Drive+ and its playlist-creating app MixRadio. Xbox Music and Video are present and correct too though Video delivers SD only to Windows phones, but HD to other devices and Xbox.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:</strong> <strong><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/microsoft/windows-phone-81/review">Windows Phone 8.1 in-depth review&nbsp;</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Download offline HERE Maps " alt="Nokia Lumia 630 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/nokia-lumia-630-review-here-maps.png?1401378065" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="The Windows Store has the basics if not the best " alt="Nokia Lumia 630 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/nokia-lumia-630-review-apps.png?1401378065" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Aaannnnnd Action (Center) " alt="Nokia Lumia 630 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/nokia-lumia-630-review-action-centre.png?1401378065" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="1200" height="900" title="Longpress the back button to switch apps " alt="Nokia Lumia 630 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/nokia-lumia-630-review-multi-tasking.png?1401378065" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Where&#039;s Cortana? </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>We&rsquo;re a little disappointed that Cortana, Microsoft&rsquo;s answer to Siri, isn&rsquo;t quite ready for her UK debut just yet. A 4.5in display seems to be the sweet spot for 2014 - the Moto G and HTC One Mini 2 are also this size. But while this one&rsquo;s good, it&#39;s not the best for the money.&nbsp;</p> <p>Like the 520, it&rsquo;s got plenty of punch, displaying colours which are a little on the warmer side of the palette and serving up very good viewing angles for a budget phone. Sadly, Nokia didn&rsquo;t increase the number of pixels by much when it upped the screen size from 4in to 4.5in, so we&rsquo;re stuck with a 854 x 480 resolution.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s not a deal-breaker for video, as the picture&#39;s pleasant enough anyway. But pixels are clearly visible when you&#39;re looking at text. Then again, we&rsquo;ve spent the past few months staring at 1080p screens, and we doubt that&#39;s the case for most 630 buyers.&nbsp;</p> <p>Still, with the&nbsp;the slightly higher res EE Kestrel and&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/motorola/motorola-moto-g/review">720p Moto G</a>&nbsp;displaying cleaner fonts, it&rsquo;s a problem for the 221ppi Lumia. But the Lumia does have a Battery Saver option to help stretch it in emergencies.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/lumia-icon/nokia-lumia-icon/review">Nokia Lumia Icon review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Lumia Looks </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>We almost forgot to mention it, but this thing is bright green. Even with the extra 0.5in screen space, it&rsquo;s easy to hold and sturdy too. It&rsquo;s chunky at 9.2mm but the fact that it&rsquo;s light, at 134g, makes all the difference. Another sensible tweak to last year&rsquo;s model: where the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/lumia-520/nokia-lumia-520/review">Lumia 520&rsquo;s pointed corners</a> could dig into palms a little, these have been swapped out for rounded corners and a straighter back edge. Launched at Microsoft&#39;s BUILD conference in San Francisco, the Nokia Lumia 930 is an Icon by another name, and it looks every bit as good as the original.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/will-findlater" title="View user profile.">Will Findlater</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Windows Phone 8.1 on Android-rivalling hardware </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Lumia 930 will be one of the first handsets available that runs Windows Phone 8.1, Cortana voice control, customisable Live Tile wallpaper and all.</p> <p>And it should run speedily. It&#39;s covered with Gorilla Glass 3 and reportedly works even if you have gloves on. Inside is a 2420mAh battery, which is compatible with the Qi wireless charging standard.</p> <p>As with many Lumias, a point of difference for the 930 is its 20MP PureView camera. It&#39;s equipped with Zeiss optics and optical image stabilisation (rather than the inferior electronic kind) to alleviate hand shake. Unlike most Lumias, the 930 has a solid aluminium frame sandwiched by two colourful slabs of polycarbonate. We weren&#39;t completely taken with this styling when we tested the Icon - it&#39;s a chunky beast - but it certainly feels built to last.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/microsoft/windows-phone-81/review" target="_blank">Windows Phone 8.1 preview</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Phew. It boasts instead a (still very respectable) 20MP sensor that takes either 19MP 4:3 ratio images or 16MP 16:9 ratio images, and makes a 5MP copy of any photos you take for quicker sharing. The camera comes with a wide aperture of F2.4, a dual LED flash and Carl Zeiss optics, and all these things fit together to make it a superb snapper by mobile phone standards: images are clear and sharp, and you can get good, crisp results even in very low light conditions.</p> <p><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="360" mozallowfullscreen="" msallowfullscreen="" oallowfullscreen="" src="https://www.flickr.com/photos/99712217@N05/13216379504/in/set-72157642484239063/player/" webkitallowfullscreen="" width="640"></iframe></p> <p>The default Pro Cam app (which you can bring up straight away by holding down the hardware shutter button, even when the phone is in screen lock mode) offers a host of manual shooting options: focus, exposure, white balance, shutter speed and ISO can all be tweaked, should you wish. It also lets you crop and reframe photos after you&rsquo;ve taken them.</p> <p>Video can be captured at 1080p HD quality and either 30, 25 or 24fps, and looks excellent for a phone. We&rsquo;d have liked a slo-mo 120fps mode, too, but there is one bonus in the inclusion of four separate microphones and thus clearer audio quality than most smartphone videos. We found it picks up gusts of wind quite easily, which is a somewhat unfortunate side effect (at least if you like shooting on moors, rooftops and the like).</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Nokia Lumia Icon camera" alt="Nokia Lumia Icon camera" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/nokia-lumia-icon-review-7.jpg?1405299341" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Windows Phone is still an issue </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>There&rsquo;s no nice way of saying this &ndash; but like all Windows handsets, the Icon suffers from a paucity of apps in comparison to iOS and Android. While a lot of the more popular big name apps are available (Spotify, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Twitter, Instagram, <em>Angry Birds</em>), many are nowhere to be found and it&#39;s far from the first choice platform for developers with pioneering software. There are no signs of that changing anytime soon, either.</p> <p>
The tile-based Windows Phone UI itself is a joy to use, and despite its different approach to other smartphone interfaces it doesn&rsquo;t feel particularly unfamiliar or confusing - a clear sign of good design.</p> <p>Another plus side of Windows Phone is the inclusion of handy, well-made native apps such as Here, Here Drive+, Office and Local Scout. Here, in particular, makes for an excellent alternative to Google and Apple Maps. There&rsquo;s also a handy 7GB of free OneDrive cloud storage.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/microsoft/cortana-will-be-windows-phone-s-answer-siri/news" target="_blank">Cortana will be Windows Phone&#39;s answer to Siri</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Nokia Lumia Icon and Windows Phone" alt="Nokia Lumia Icon and Windows Phone" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/nokia-lumia-icon-review-8.jpg?1405299341" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Nokia Lumia Icon verdict </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Nokia Lumia Icon is probably the best Windows Phone around at the moment: it bests the Lumia 1020 in every major respect except looks and camera skills, boasts quad-core power and a fantastic screen. And it isn&rsquo;t even particularly pricey.</p> <p>Like any Windows Phone, it&rsquo;s slightly hampered by its app selection, but if it were available in the UK we&rsquo;d suggest it over any other Windows handset. All of which means that the Lumia 930, which will hopefully be available in the &pound;350-&pound;400 price bracket, could well be better still, if only because it will launch with Windows Phone 8.1.&nbsp;</p> <p>That being said, the Icon&#39;s spec is just a little bit &quot;best of 2013&quot;, and we have little doubt the coming 2014 crop of new Windows smartphones from Nokia and elsewhere may surpass it on specs and design. So watch this space.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/smartphones/top-ten" target="_blank">The 10 best smartphones in the world right now</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div>
