Just when you thought Nokia had forgotten about its cobweb-covered Symbian OS, the Finnish phone giant goes and announces the 500 – an entry-level smartphone that debuts a new numbers-only naming system.
Running Symbian's Anna OS, the 500 has a promising spec sheet for a budget smartphone, with a 1GHz CPU, 3.2in capitative 640x320 pixel display, 5MP camera, 2GB of in-built storage and, of course, Ovi Maps.
With the announcement of the MeeGo-toting N9 and Nokia's first Windows Phone 7 handset on the horizon, Symbian isn't exactly Nokia's priority, but for £130 it could give blowers like the HTC Wildfire S a run for their money when it launches in August or September. The only question is whether a bargain price and decent specs can convince people to move back to the forgotten land of Symbian. We'll soon find out.
