In fact, our main complaint with the best Windows Phone yet was that we couldn&#39;t get our hands on it, as it&#39;s a US-only device.</p> <p class="p1">But very soon, it&#39;ll be available over here too. Launched at Microsoft&#39;s BUILD conference in San Francisco, the Nokia Lumia 930 is an Icon by another name, and it looks every bit as good as the original.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/will-findlater" title="View user profile.">Will Findlater</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Windows Phone 8.1 on Android-rivalling hardware </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Lumia 930 will be one of the first handsets available that runs Windows Phone 8.1, Cortana voice control, customisable Live Tile wallpaper and all.</p> <p>And it should run speedily. It&#39;s covered with Gorilla Glass 3 and reportedly works even if you have gloves on. Inside is a 2420mAh battery, which is compatible with the Qi wireless charging standard.</p> <p>As with many Lumias, a point of difference for the 930 is its 20MP PureView camera. It&#39;s equipped with Zeiss optics and optical image stabilisation (rather than the inferior electronic kind) to alleviate hand shake. Unlike most Lumias, the 930 has a solid aluminium frame sandwiched by two colourful slabs of polycarbonate. We weren&#39;t completely taken with this styling when we tested the Icon - it&#39;s a chunky beast - but it certainly feels built to last.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/microsoft/windows-phone-81/review" target="_blank">Windows Phone 8.1 preview</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Phew. We found it picks up gusts of wind quite easily, which is a somewhat unfortunate side effect (at least if you like shooting on moors, rooftops and the like).</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Nokia Lumia Icon camera" alt="Nokia Lumia Icon camera" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/nokia-lumia-icon-review-7.jpg?1396603805" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Windows Phone is still an issue </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>There&rsquo;s no nice way of saying this &ndash; but like all Windows handsets, the Icon suffers from a paucity of apps in comparison to iOS and Android. While a lot of the more popular big name apps are available (Spotify, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Twitter, Instagram, <em>Angry Birds</em>), many are nowhere to be found and it&#39;s far from the first choice platform for developers with pioneering software. There are no signs of that changing anytime soon, either.</p> <p>
The tile-based Windows Phone UI itself is a joy to use, and despite its different approach to other smartphone interfaces it doesn&rsquo;t feel particularly unfamiliar or confusing - a clear sign of good design.</p> <p>Another plus side of Windows Phone is the inclusion of handy, well-made native apps such as Here, Here Drive+, Office and Local Scout. Here, in particular, makes for an excellent alternative to Google and Apple Maps. There&rsquo;s also a handy 7GB of free OneDrive cloud storage.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/microsoft/cortana-will-be-windows-phone-s-answer-siri/news" target="_blank">Cortana will be Windows Phone&#39;s answer to Siri</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Nokia Lumia Icon and Windows Phone" alt="Nokia Lumia Icon and Windows Phone" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/nokia-lumia-icon-review-8.jpg?1396603805" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Nokia Lumia Icon verdict </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Nokia Lumia Icon is probably the best Windows Phone around at the moment: it bests the Lumia 1020 in every major respect except looks and camera skills, boasts quad-core power and a fantastic screen. And it isn&rsquo;t even particularly pricey.</p> <p>Like any Windows Phone, it&rsquo;s slightly hampered by its app selection, but if it were available in the UK we&rsquo;d suggest it over any other Windows handset. All of which means that the Lumia 930, which will hopefully be available in the &pound;350-&pound;400 price bracket, could well be better still, if only because it will launch with Windows Phone 8.1.&nbsp;</p> <p>That being said, the Icon&#39;s spec is just a little bit &quot;best of 2013&quot;, and we have little doubt the coming 2014 crop of new Windows smartphones from Nokia and elsewhere may surpass it on specs and design. Both appear to exist primarily as a response to the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, the leader in the super-sized smartphone market.</p> <p>While the extra screen real estate of the 1520 is very much appreciated when browsing the web, watching movies and glancing through more live tiles than was possible in the past, there&rsquo;s no addition to the Windows 8 OS which takes any specific advantage of the extra space on offer. And that&#39;s one of the 1520&#39;s main failings.</p> <p>The <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-note-3/samsung-galaxy-note-3/review" target="_blank">Galaxy Note 3</a> (and even the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/samsung-galaxy-s4/review" target="_blank">Galaxy S4</a>) has Multi-View, a feature which lets you run selected apps side by side. It&rsquo;s a feature that&rsquo;s sorely missing from the 1520. Windows 8 and even the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/microsoft/microsoft-xbox-one/review" target="_blank">Xbox One</a> both offer the ability to &lsquo;snap&rsquo; apps to the side of the screen, letting you deal with two things simultaneously, and it&rsquo;s a shame that this capability hasn&rsquo;t ported itself over to the Lumia 1520.</p> <p>The Note 3&rsquo;s excellent S Pen stylus also sets it apart, offering impressive handwriting recognition as well as pressure sensitivity for doodlers to get creative with. Sony&#39;s&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sony/sony-xperia-z-ultra-hands-review/news" target="_blank">Xperia Z Ultra</a> will let you scribble away on its screen with a regular biro. The almost flush-mounted side buttons can be a chore to find at first, but we&#39;re sure you&#39;ll get used to feeling them out.</p> <p>While it lacks the big camera bulge found on the Lumia 1020 (it has a smaller sensor than that device), its large screen means its got a massive footprint, and unless you&rsquo;re still wearing combat pants, you&rsquo;ll definitely be aware of it in your pockets. Indeed, you can expect an inch or so of yellow to poke out of all but the roomiest slacks.</p> <p>The 1520 doesn&rsquo;t offer a removable battery, you can upgrade the storage via a microSD card slot, which is located right next to the nanoSIM slot. If you&rsquo;re an app enthusiast, the Lumia 1520, or any Windows Phone 8 device for that matter, isn&#39;t yet for you.</p> <p>There&rsquo;s simply no comparison between the Windows Phone 8 store and the Google Play Store and App Store on <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/android-44-kitkat/review" target="_blank">Android</a> and <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/ios-7/ios-7/review" target="_blank">iOS</a>, and those platforms remain first on the list for app developers embarking on new projects.&nbsp;</p> <p>The lack of a proper YouTube app is also almost unforgivable in this day and age, and&nbsp;life-saving (well, night-saving) apps such as City Mapper and imaginative indie games such as Device 6 are sorely missing.&nbsp; But at least things are improving.</p> <p>Windows Phone 8 users now have Spotify, Waze, Instagram and Vine to choose from the A-list app roster, and there are some quality games available including Asphalt 8 and the superb Halo: Spartan Assault.</p> <p>The Live Tile notifications are as fun and useful as ever, letting you see what&rsquo;s going on in your social and messaging world at a glance, and the larger screen means you can cram more on at once, turning the 1520&#39;s home screen into a Clapham Junction of live information.</p> <p>What is missing from the Windows Phone 8 experience, though, is a quick-settings dropdown menu like Android and iOS&rsquo; notification centres.</p> <p>Windows Phone 8 also feels convoluted at times, forcing you to go through several menus and button taps before carrying out something as simple as turning Wi-Fi on and off. </p> <p>Its keyboard, however, remains one of the best stock touchscreen keyboards we&rsquo;ve ever used, and thanks to the huge screen size, miss-hits are almost eradicated. </p> <p>Being able to double-tap the screen LG G2-style to wake the display is also a nice touch, though you can&rsquo;t repeat that action to turn it off.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Nokia Lumia 1520 review" alt="Nokia Lumia 1520 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCF7548.JPG?1394184520" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Nokia Lumia 1520 review" alt="Nokia Lumia 1520 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCF7539.JPG?1394184520" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Camera: slow to start, but worth the wait </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>While it might not have the insane 41MP sensor of the Nokia Lumia 1020, the 1520 still packs in a 20MP sensor which, thanks to PureView technology, offers up to 2x lossless zoom.</p> <p>Pictures taken with the 1520 are excellent by any standards, with snaps showing off bags of detail and accurate colour reproduction. Get a 1520 and you can leave your compact camera at home - fortunate, as you won&#39;t have space in your pocket for it any more.</p> <p>No other phablet comes close camera-wise. Indeed, it&rsquo;s second only to the Lumia 1020 when it comes to image quality, and somehow manages to fit its oversized sensor and optics in without resorting to an unsightly bulge.</p> <p>Like the LG G2 - itself an excellent camera phone - the 1520 also has mechanical optical image stabilisation (OIS), which should result in clearer low-light shots. Head-to-head with the G2 in a dark room, the 1520 is way out in front, with brighter, more detailed results, partly thanks to the dual LED flash in place of the G2&rsquo;s single offering.</p> <p>The sample shot above was taken with the 1520 in a very dark room, and the detail on display is very impressive indeed.</p> <p>Nokia&rsquo;s Pro Cam camera app is also superb, serving up an intuitive control system which lets you change every aspect of your shots from exposure to white balance, and everything in between.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s a shame, then, that despite the dedicated shutter button which can launch the camera app, it&rsquo;s sluggish to open up. It can also be quite slow in between shots, especially if you&rsquo;re saving snaps in the uncompressed raw DNG format (although, to be fair, only PureView phones are even capable of this at the moment).</p> <p>It might not sound like much, but even a tiny delay could result in the difference between a perfect shot and a missed opportunity.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Nokia Lumia 1520 review" alt="Nokia Lumia 1520 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCF7544.JPG?1394184520" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1632" height="1218" title="Nokia Lumia 1520 review" alt="Nokia Lumia 1520 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/WP_20131129_02_20_07_Pro.jpg?1394184520" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Power trip </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Lumia 1520 is up there with the most powerful Android phones currently available, thanks to its quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor and 2GB of RAM.</p> <p>Windows Phone 8 has always run fast on previous Lumia devices, but if it ran any faster than it does on the 1520, it would almost certainly catch fire.</p> <p>Stuttering and lag just aren&rsquo;t in the 1520&rsquo;s vocabulary. 3D games like Asphalt 8 and Halo: Spartan Assault run fast and smooth no matter what else is grinding away in the background. When closed, the front glass and the back plate are seamless. The colours are so vibrant that they almost glow &ndash; which makes it awesome to pick it out among the me-too phones plaguing the market now. It does look a bit cheaper than expected though.</p> <p>With the Moto G, Motorola has revisited its Moto X design &ndash; but added a removable back plate. This means users are able to change the colour according to their mood. While it is chunkier than higher-class smartphones in the market, it doesn&rsquo;t feel cheap to hold and feel. The build quality of the Moto G goes above and beyond its price tag.</p> <p><strong>Winner: </strong>Moto G</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Nokia X vs Motorola Moto G: the weigh in" alt="Nokia X vs Motorola Moto G: the weigh in" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/nokia-x-and-xl-2_1.jpg?1393982235" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Nokia X vs Motorola Moto G: the weigh in" alt="Nokia X vs Motorola Moto G: the weigh in" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN0002_1.JPG?1393982235" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Display: One company spent more than the other </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>This is where money meets the road, and Motorola certainly spent extra here to make up for the rest of the phone. Simply put, it&#39;s amazing that Motorola produced such a high quality screen at this price point.</p> <p>For Nokia though, the year is still 2011. With a screen resolution of 800 x 480 pixels, you won&#39;t get the best HD viewing experience, and even worse is the fact that the same resolution is being used in all three phones ( X, X+ and XL) and in two sizes (4in and 5in). Not only is it running a dated Android version (which is optimised for mid-to-low end devices, such as the X series here), there&#39;s minimal Google support and no Google Play Store &ndash; apps are installed either via Nokia&rsquo;s own app store, or have to be sideloaded into the phone.</p> <p><strong>Winner: </strong>Moto G</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="Nokia X vs Motorola Moto G: the weigh in" alt="Nokia X vs Motorola Moto G: the weigh in" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/colours.jpg?1393982235" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Verdict </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>It&#39;s clear almost right from the start that the Moto G comes off best in this weigh-in. It doesn&rsquo;t have a great camera but hey &ndash; you can&#39;t have it all.</p> <p>The Nokia X family, however, is special because it&rsquo;s the company&rsquo;s first foray into the Android universe and aimed at emerging countries (nope &ndash; not even the UK will get this phone). Also, it&#39;s a first generation device, and like most of those it has plenty of room for improvement. Those little progress dots that dart across the screen? You get none of them, and the general feel of the experience is somewhat stuttery and simple (see below). The signature resizable live tiles are present and correct, and Nokia has replaced all of the stock Android apps for messaging, browsing and the like with its own designs.</p> <p>The operating system&#39;s core is Android 4.1.2 (Jelly Bean), which lacks many of the optimisations of KitKat which have vastly improved Android&#39;s performance on lacklustre hardware. It&#39;s a shame - we can&#39;t help but feel that the X series would function better on a new OS.</p> <p>The usual gestures bring up the usual screens (including an app list that looks a lot like WinPhone&#39;s) but the single back button will take a little getting used to. It works with a single tap or a long press, so you can quickly skip back to the home screen if you need to.</p> <p>Nokia&#39;s aim with the X is to introduce a new audience to Microsoft&#39;s services, so you&#39;ll use your Microsoft account rather than your Google one. You can also use Nokia&#39;s excellent Here Maps in place of GMaps, and download apps from the Nokia-curated store rather than Google Play. Indeed, Google&#39;s own apps - Chrome, Maps, etc - won&#39;t be available for the X, and all apps will need to be slightly altered to function on the hardware. A bold, and dangerous, move.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Nokia X homescreen" alt="Nokia X homescreen" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/nokia-x_3.jpg?1393379613" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Power: flagships they ain&#039;t </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The X, with it&#39;s dual-core 1GHz Snapdragon processor and 512MB RAM, is noticeably underpowered. It&#39;s a 3MP fixed-focus affair (no UltraPixel tech here), and its complemented by an app that&#39;s equally cut-down. The light was too poor to test the camera out.</p> <p>The XL is more modern in its spec, with a 5MP cam round the back and a 2MP one up front. The rear camera focused and shot quite nippily, and with Nokia&#39;s imaging chops, there&#39;s reason to suspect it&#39;ll do a fine job for the handset&#39;s price.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Initial verdict </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The sub-&euro;90 X, sub-&euro;100 X+ and sub-&euro;110 XL are very competitively priced, which makes them compelling devices almost regardless of how they perform. And in terms of how they look and feel, no other entry-level device can touch them.</p> <p>Two worries. The first is that Nokia are unnecessarily restricting the Android experience by controlling which apps will and won&#39;t work. Apps are a major selling point for Android devices over Windows Phone ones, so putting obstacles in the way to accessing them feels unwise.</p> <p>The second is that they&#39;re up against seriously stiff, not-too-much-more-expensive competition - the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/motorola/motorola-moto-g/review">Motorola Moto G</a>, for example, which lets you taste superphone performance for less than &pound;100 on PAYG. The Xs may have sexier bodies, but the Moto G feels like a phone out of 2014, while they&#39;re stuck watching the London Olympics.</p> <p>Sure, the X range isn&#39;t aimed at spec-obsessed gadget addicts (indeed, none have been confirmed for sale in Western Europe), but we can&#39;t help but feel that a device like the Moto G will offer better value for smartphone newbies than the X, regardless of whether their market is emerging or in full bloom.</p> <p>We&#39;ll reserve full judgement until we have samples to try out in our laboratory conditions. Stay tuned.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:</strong> <strong><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/nokia/nokia-normandy/review">Nokia X preview</a></strong></p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/htc/mwc-2014/mwc-2014-biggest-stories-so-far/feature">MWC 2014 - the biggest smartphone news from Mobile World Congress</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Nokia X in hand" alt="Nokia X in hand" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/nokia-x-in-hand.jpg?1393379613" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/nokia/nokia-x-x-xl-hands-review/feature" target="_blank">read more</a></p> MWC 2014 Nokia Smartphones Tue, 25 Feb 2014 17:26:54 +0000 Sam Kieldsen 1432887 at http://www.stuff.tv MWC 2014 day 1 round-up: the stories you missed http://www.stuff.tv/facebook/mwc-2014/mwc-2014-round-best-stories-you-missed/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> The smaller launches and goings-on from the first day at the world&#039;s biggest mobile tech show </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="604" height="453" title="MWC 2014 day 1 round-up: the stories you missed" alt="MWC 2014 day 1 round-up: the stories you missed" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/mobile-world-congress_0_0.jpg?1393298962" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/sam-kieldsen" title="View user profile.">Sam Kieldsen</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Nokia and HTC tweet lame jokes about the Samsung Galaxy S5 </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Ah, rivalry between smartphone makers: always reliable as a provider of ill-advised social media jokes. It&#39;s all very Windows Phone-like, isn&#39;t it?</p> <p>Look closer though and you&#39;ll see little clues like the BBM icon. The Normandy definitely isn&#39;t running iOS or BlackBerry 10, and the only other mobile OS that runs BBM is Android.</p> <p>The notification menu is also reminiscent of Android&#39;s very own offering, with expandable notifications clearly present. The&nbsp;X is therefore running Android, but it&rsquo;s a very heavily skinned version.</p> <p>That&rsquo;s not necessarily a bad thing (we don&rsquo;t hate the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/amazon-kindle-fire-hdx-89/review" target="_blank">Kindle Fire HDX</a>&rsquo;s skinned version of Android after all), but we hope the X doesn&rsquo;t inherit the HDX&rsquo;s closed Amazon app store, which lacks the Google Play store&#39;s entire app catalogue.</p> <p><strong>UPDATE 28/01/14:</strong>&nbsp;It looks like we spoke too soon. According to <a href="https://twitter.com/evleaks/status/428041842429423616" target="_blank">@evleaks</a>, Nokia has gone the Amazon route by incorporating its own Nokia App store into the X, as opposed to the entire collection of apps and games offered by Google Play.</p> <p>Presumably that&#39;s so it can push its own services like Nokia Music, but there is a silver lining.</p> <p>Vietnamese retailer <a href="http://translate.google.com/translate?sl=auto&amp;tl=en&amp;js=n&amp;prev=_t&amp;hl=en&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.thegioididong.com%2Fdtdd%2Fnokia-normandy" target="_blank">TheGioididong</a> has an interesting listing for the Normandy that claims it&#39;ll support Google services (Google Play, Google Search, Google Now, Google Maps, Gmail, YouTube, Google Calendar), which is unusual for non-standard Android UI phones.&nbsp;</p> <p>@evleaks also believes that third party apps can also be side-loaded onto the device, though that&#39;s a method that casual Android users are unlikely to adopt.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="500" height="375" title="Nokia X (Normandy)" alt="Nokia X (Normandy)" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/nokia-x-home-screen-1.jpg?1392756694" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="500" height="375" title="Nokia X (Normandy)" alt="Nokia X (Normandy)" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/nokia-x-homescreen-2.jpg?1392756694" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Release date? </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Steady on there. Insects are high in protein and important minerals, you see, and many predict that with meat due to become an expensive rarity in the not-too-distant future, bug-paste could prove an important food source.</p> <p>The problem? Most people don&rsquo;t like the idea of eating insects. And pretty-looking 3D printed creations made of insect flour and water are somewhat more palatable than a plateful of sauteed crickets. But don&rsquo;t expect to be chewing on shaped bug snacks particularly soon: the substance will probably find a use as animal feed in the medium term while food regulators get their heads around the idea.</p> <p><strong>[Source: <a href="http://www.3dprinter.net/turning-insects-3d-printed-snacks">3D Printer</a>]</strong></p> <p><strong>READ MORE:</strong> <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/would-you-eat-3d-printed-pizza/news">Would you eat a 3D printed pizza?</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Yum! All in all, for the price, the 520 makes for a practical, if not sexy, purchase.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Nokia Lumia 520 review " alt="Nokia Lumia 520 review " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Nokia-Lumia-520-review-back-cover.png?1392388520" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Bursting with Nokia Goodies </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>It&rsquo;s not just the outside of Lumia phones that&rsquo;s distinctive, it&rsquo;s impressive how many genuinely useful apps Nokia manages to cram into its lower-end phones. On top of access to the Windows Phone Store, the 520 is treated to the playlist streaming service Mix Radio, some of Nokia&rsquo;s camera apps (more on these later) and Nokia&rsquo;s excellent HERE Drive nav app.</p> <p>The 520&rsquo;s also in line for <a href="http://www.nokia.com/global/windows-phone-black-update/" target="_blank">Nokia&rsquo;s Black software update</a>, which adds its photo app Storyteller. As the 520 only has 512MB of RAM it won&rsquo;t get features such as Glance Screen notifications or Lytro-like Refocus, but we&rsquo;re expecting it to be a nice addition nonetheless.</p> <p>Windows Phone itself, with its customisable live tiles homescreen and simplified settings, is nicely suited to users who just want easy access to messages, browsing and email. There&rsquo;s also the bonus of 7GB of free SkyDrive storage compatible with the pre-installed Office (Word, Excel, etc) apps.
