Mystic Searches is an upcoming retro game that&rsquo;ll be coming out on a big grey 8-bit NES cartridge. But not any ordinary 8-bit cartridge &ndash; this one also contains a more modern version of the game (stored on flash memory) that&rsquo;ll run on your PC or Mac if you plug in the cart via USB.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/sam-kieldsen" title="View user profile.">Sam Kieldsen</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>It&rsquo;s the brainchild of Florida-based filmmaker Joe Granato, who discovered his own 25 year old NES game concept notes and sketches while visiting his parents. The 8-bit and modern versions of the game will even interact with each other: unlock secrets or achievements in the NES edition and they&rsquo;ll carry over to the shinier PC edition.</p> <p>Granato has assembled a team consisting of writers, composers, graphical artists and other creative types in order to make Mystic Searches a reality. They&rsquo;re seeking funding on Kickstarter and seem well on the way to achieving their target. If they do, the game should be available in November 2015, and pledging US$50 (&pound;30) will get you one of the first cartridges off the production line.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Mystic Searches is a real 8-bit adventure game" alt="Mystic Searches is a real 8-bit adventure game" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/mystic-searches-2.jpg?1411126477" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="As well as a modern one" alt="As well as a modern one" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/mystic-searches-3.jpg?1411126477" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><iframe frameborder="0" height="450" scrolling="no" src="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1316851183/the-new-8-bit-heroes-new-nes-game-and-creation-doc/widget/video.html" width="600"></iframe></p> <p>Granato is also making a documentary film about the process of making an independent 8-bit game in the modern era, as well as a series of tutorials giving pointers to anyone who fancies following his team&rsquo;s lead. That&rsquo;s the hope, at least, of Intel and the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson&rsquo;s Research, which yesterday announced plans to utilize wearables to gather massive amounts of data on Parkinson&rsquo;s patients.</p> <p>Intel&rsquo;s computing prowess will power a specialized platform that gathers &ldquo;more than 300 observations per second from each patient&rdquo; wearing a supported device, which will tie into a forthcoming app that allows the needed data to be stored. Patients will be able to record how they&rsquo;re feeling, and that will tie into what the sensors pull to provide a fuller picture of wellness and symptoms to doctors.</p> <p>Intel says the platform will be open-source, allowing unidentified patient data to be used by various researchers in the hopes of pursuing treatments and a cure for the degenerative disease.</p> <p>A 25-person trial study was performed earlier this year, and initial algorithms for the app are being based on the results from that. It&rsquo;s not entirely clear from the reports which wearables will be compatible; a slide from the foundation shows a Pebble, while the USA Today story mentions a FitBit, but we imagine the goal is to make this initiative friendly with as many existing devices as possible.</p> <p>[Sources:&nbsp;<a href="http://newsroom.intel.com/community/intel_newsroom/blog/2014/08/13/the-michael-j-fox-foundation-and-intel-join-forces-to-improve-parkinsons-disease-monitoring-and-treatment-through-advanced-technologies">Intel</a>,&nbsp;<a href="http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2014/08/13/michael-j-fox-parkinsons-intel/13719811/">USA Today</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/star21-fitness-band-guilt-trips-you-good-health/news">Star.21 fitness band guilt-trips you into good health</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> The Walking Dead co-op shooter coming from Payday developer </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Telltale Games&rsquo;&nbsp;<em>Walking Dead</em>&nbsp;adventure series has set the bar high for both licensed and episodic games, but there&rsquo;s another interactive take on the smash comic series that seems just as likely to be excellent: a cooperative first-person shooter from Overkill Software, the studio behind the&nbsp;<em>Payday</em>&nbsp;co-op heist series.</p> <p>The upcoming game was announced yesterday, but it&rsquo;s still a ways out: it&rsquo;ll launch in 2016 on unspecified platforms. Either way, the sample will need to be less than 10 metres in size. After that, NASA&rsquo;s plan is to redirect the asteroid into orbit around the Earth, at which point astronauts will be able to take samples and study it (as visualized above).&nbsp;</p> <p>Sounds like science fiction, right? If NASA has its way, it&rsquo;ll be science fact before long. The benefit is reportedly twofold, as it will help NASA better understand how to deal with potential hazardous near-Earth objects in the future, and also further its plans to send astronauts to Mars in the 2030s.</p> <p>[Source: <a href="http://www.nasa.gov/press/2014/june/nasa-announces-latest-progress-upcoming-milestones-in-hunt-for-asteroids/#.U6eVIdzhiCb">NASA</a> via <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2014/06/22/nasa-asteroid-mission-launches-2019/">Engadget</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/just-because-they-could-–-asteroid-mining/news">Just because they could &mdash; asteroid mining</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Nest acquires Dropcam for US$555 million </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Google just bought smart thermostat company Nest a few months back for US$3.2 billion, and now Nest is making its part of the Google family a little larger with its acquisition of Dropcam for US$555 million. It&rsquo;s looking incredible and will be released next year.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="604" height="453" title="Zelda for Wii U: that&#039;s a big old world" alt="Zelda for Wii U: that&#039;s a big old world" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/legendofzelda-wiiu_0.jpg?1402675185" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-7"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Ubisoft </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Third-party powerhouse Ubisoft has already announced plans to show off <em>Far Cry 4</em> for the first time at its E3 press conference (scheduled for 11pm UK time on Monday 9th June), and it&rsquo;ll be flanked by <em><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/detaiuls-next-assassins-creed-game-have-leaked-and-its-called-unity/news">Assassin&rsquo;s Creed: Unity</a></em>, the French Revolution-set new-gen and PC entry.</p> <p>Rumors of a separate <em>Assassin&rsquo;s Creed</em> game for last-gen consoles could produce an interesting E3 result, otherwise we&rsquo;ll no doubt see open-world racer <em>The Crew</em> and the recently delayed <em>Tom Clancy&rsquo;s The Divisio</em>n, which is now set to launch in 2015.</p> <p><strong>Update 09/06/2014:</strong> A banner advertising <em>Assassin&#39;s Creed: Unity</em> at E3 hints at the game featuring four player co-op, <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2014-06-08-looks-like-assassins-creed-unity-has-four-player-co-op">reports Eurogamer</a>.
