What’s wrong with ebook readers as they are?
Nothing in particular, but what if you could condense that slab-like form into something much easier to carry around? A cylinder, say. We spotted the eRoll concept, which envisions a baton-shaped reader with a screen that unrolls as you pull it out. This design keeps the screen protected when you’re lugging the reader around too, as it’s coiled up safe inside the shell.

So, are we looking at E Ink as the display tech for this rollable reader?
Perhaps. We remember seeing Philips showing off a rollable black and white E Ink screen at the IFA tech show a few years ago, and obviously E Ink suits ebook readers perfectly – it’s the tech that gives the Kindle and co that nice, eye-friendly print-like display. But there is another option...

Another display option? What’s that?
OLED. Just this week Sony showed off a 4.1-inch, 432 x 240 resolution flexible OLED screen so thin that it can be wound round a pencil. It’s colour too. Sony hasn’t said what products this tech will be used for, but given the resolution it’s more likely to be mobile phones than ebook readers. But in the future, who knows...?
