The makers of BioShock 2 have just announced they are working of a revival of XCOM, the classic mid-1990s strategy game series.
The franchise's comeback is long overdue. The XCOM series was a gripping turn-based strategy game where you organise the planet's response to alien invaders, researching extraterrestrial technology and fighting them across the world. But the revival, which will appear on the PC and Xbox 360, has a catch. It's going to be a first-person shooter.
While there's no doubt that BioShock 2 was a cut above the average first-person shooter, but the thought that the squad tactics of the original could be cast aside in favour of straightforward blasting is a worrying one.
Fingers crossed that as more details come out these fears subside. And that they keep in the terrifyingly tough Chryssalid aliens that implant eggs in their victims that turn them into zombies.
