Spotify gets major update – could it rival iTunes?

Spotify Facebook stream

Spotify is preparing to release a major update this week, which it says will mark the "biggest evolution of the service since launch".

The music streaming favourite has announced it'll be introducing more than 12 new features, including a new feature called Spotify Social that will hook the service up to Facebook for easier tune sharing. Even better, you won't even have to leave Spotify.

However probably the biggest addition is the Library feature which allows you to import all your music files into Spotify, changing it from a music streaming service to an iTunes-bothering music management platform.

The automatic update will be rolled out this week, but if you can't wait you can download the new client from the Spotify website now.

Check out all the new additions and a video showing them off on the Spotify blog and let us know what you think to it all below.

I updated my spotify this morning and I'm really happy that you can now import your own library of music and then you can sync this to your mobile account and have all my music on the move. However, it does seem a little buggy at the moment with not all the track titles and artists copying over correctly. Also on my iPhone the tracks copied over but just in a randon order and there is no search functionality as of yet. So all in all a welcome addition, just needs a few tweaks before I can move away from iTunes completely.
