Rumour Mill – Facebook launching Gmail killer today

Facebook is holding an event today. And when the site that holds half a billion people captive in its virtual world makes an announcement, the world watches.
What will it launch? We don’t know, but the sharpest rumour suggests a Gmail-killing email service.

Facebook already has a mail tool built into its website, but it also has an aggressive strategy to use its online clout to cut into new markets. We’re already watching it have a stab at the location patch. While it’s going after Foursquare, it may as well go after Gmail and Hotmail.
The announcement’s at 6pm (UK time). And we’ll be back then with a confirmation. Or, if the rumours are wrong, we’ll let you in on what’s really being launched.
