Wikipedia blackout begins at 5am on Wednesday January 18
In protest at a US government Act that would curb internet freedom Wikipedia won’t be available in English for a full 24 hours, starting on Wednesday January 18th at 5am.
A statement from Wikimedia’s exec director Sue Gardner says the unprecedented move may pave a better future for online readers, while a public statement from the English Wikimedia Community claims the controversial bill – the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) – provoked “the largest level of participation in a community discussion ever seen on Wikipedia.”
So it’s good news (hopefully) for the future of the free web, but bad news for anyone with a score to settle during the Wiki outage. Either way, we don’t think the world’s going to fall apart… is it?
