Sky to launch PAYG internet TV and movies for non-subscribers

It’s been a busy week for Sky. First it announces iPlayer and ITV Player are coming to Sky Anytime. Then it drops the Sky Go Android app bomb. Now it’s telling us we can all have Sky Movies… without paying a subscription.

Sky’s new internet TV service – launching in the first half of 2012 – will bring Sky Movies to anyone in the UK with a broadband connection on a pay-as-you-go basis. Customers will be able to pay monthly or rent individual movies. Although pricing is yet to be confirmed, Sky will also open the deal up to its sport and entertainment offerings post-launch.

And the service should be available on a variety of platforms, not just PCs and Macs. Sky promises it’ll be available on smartphones and tablets, Smart TVs and games consoles (the plural suggesting both PS3 and Xbox 360 will be getting the honours, we think).

So far, there’s no name for the service, though it’s conceivable it’ll appear under the Sky Go umbrella. Either way, we’ll know in less than five months.
