Virgin’s SmartCall app gives you smartphone minutes from your landline

Virgin Media’s unlimited free calls service is available today for iOS and Android

Virgin Media has made SmartCall, a free home phone call service, available on smartphones.

The service, which arrives today on both iOS and Android, allows you to make free phone calls over Wi-Fi, even when you’re abroad. It won’t work over 3G or 4G, which Virgin cites as an advantage because it won’t rack up any roaming charges while you’re outside of the UK.

Big savings

You’ll need a Virgin Media home phone talk plan, and the type you have will determine when SmartCalls are possible. For example, if your plan only allows you free weekend calls, SmartCall will only be available during the weekends.

Virgin claims users of the app can make yearly savings of up to £25 when calling 0845 and 0870 numbers from a mobile, £24 on European roaming costs, £108 on US, Canadian, Australian and New Zealand roaming costs and £180 on roaming costs in the rest of the world.

You can download the app now at the Google Play Store and iOS App Store.
