Vertu’s pricey Signature Touch gets a nice spec upgrade (but it’s still stupidly expensive)

The phone for that person with more money than sense

Vertu, the company that makes ridiculously expensive phones, has updated its Signature Touch smartphone. This time it’ll have a 5.2in 1080p sapphire crystal display, 4GB of RAM and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 chipset.

The camera? Well, there’s a 21MP main camera that supports 4K video capture at the back, but a measely 2.1MP in the front. At least the storage is a tad more generous, 64GB of flash memory built in, plus a microSD card slot supports cards of up to 2TB capacity.

Besides that, the phone runs Android 5.1 Lollipop with Vertu’s famous concierge customisations, LTE, Bluetooth 4.0 and the latest Wi-Fi standard – all complemented by a 3160mAh battery. The Signature Touch also supports Qi wireless charging and the Qualcomm QuickCharge 2.0 standard.

The phone’s going on pre-order from the period between 28th September to 8th October, with official sales only starting on 16th October. And the price? Well – and we hope you’re sitting down for this – it ranges from £6,500 to £13,700, all depending on what custom materials you choose. Vertu gives you a host of leather and metal combinations to choose from.

Can any smartphone be worth the best part of £15,000? Is dropping the cost of a new kitchen on something you mostly use to play Angry Birds 2 while sitting on the toilet really OK? We’ll leave those questions to richer people than ourselves, but suffice it to say, we don’t think Vertu expects its new Signature Touch to outsell the iPhone 6s.
