As a warm up for next week's phone-fest at Mobile World Congress, Toshiba popped into Stuff Towers this morning to show off its new touchscreen smartphone, the TG01. We've already filled you in on the specs (4.1in screen, 1Ghz Snapdragon processor, 9.9mm thick and, ahem, Windows Mobile 6.1) but what are our first impressions?
Well, it's incredibly thin, looking a little like an iPhone that's been given the rolling pin treatment (see comparison shots below). As you can see above, there'll also be two colours available come June, and Toshiba has given the TG01 its own colourful skin to smooth over Windows Mobile's rough edges.
This works quite nicely in practice – slide your finger across the three panels and they spin round to reveal more options. Each 'strip' also reveals your last ten actions in that area giving you quick access to, for example, your last ten phone calls.
That Snapdragon processor ensured a quick boot-up time (significantly faster than the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1), and the pre-loaded Fast and the Furious video looked crisp and ran smoothly. With CorePlayer on board, it supports plenty of formats including DivX too.
There's minimal built-in storage, but Toshiba says you will also get an 8GB microSD card in the box, and that CoPilot is likely to supply the sat-nav software. We'll have a hands-on video very soon, but in the meantime check out more pics below.
