Sky halves cost of HD box

29 Sep 2008

Sky HDGetting HD in the UK is a costly business, even if you do opt for the burgeoning talents of Freesat. The fact is though if you want your weekly Premier League dose in hi–def, you need Sky, and that costs a packet.

Well, not in October it doesn't. Sky's just dropped the price of its HD box to £75 for the whole of next month, thanks to the release of seven new hi–def channels.  Six movies channels will get the HD treatment as well as Sky Real Lives.

But the real story here is the price – the £75 cost is awesome, even if the rather nasty £30 set up charge for new customers, and £60 for existing punters is a bit of a kick in the teeth.

Mind you, that gets you access to 26 HD channels, far more than you currently get for free. Hopefully Sky HD will drop the price even further soon – how about making it free?

Its the ridiculous price of subscription to the services they need to reduce as well as the cost of the hardware. One off costs are more justifiable than continuous ones.

    i totally agree with scarrstewart

a one-off upfront cost is far more palatable (rather like buying a tv or a recorder) than the nigh on £50 a month sky want for their services each and every month thereafter - and still increase every year!

it might also help if every time there's a hint of competition sky weren't allowed to buy them off the air (remember bsb, itv digital, various cable cos, et al)

i'm sorry sky, but i'm not that desparate to join your ranks - i don't really have the time to do nothing but watch sport on tv anyway, so i'll stick to what i can get for free - for now

What annoys me sometimes are people (like those above) who are not prepared to pay out for new technology.

Sky offer an innovative and frankly groundbreaking product. The service is awesome and utter value for money, even at original prices.

I'm not the worlds biggest Sky fan, far from it, but when people sniff at paying for genuine quality in grates at me. To halve the cost of the box and now offer 26 channels is mouth watering - the only caveat is that I see a clear difference in HD picture quality on the (free) BBCHD channel to some Sky ones.

Keep up the good work Sky, the guys above do not know what they are missing. If they did, they would have it already!

    Chris
