Sky drops price of HD box

19 Jun 2008

Fancy a helping of HD, but don’t want Freesat’s limited offering? Well, Sky’s just slashed the price of its HD box and renamed it Sky+ HD.

For £150, new and existing customers can upgrade to the hi–def box. That's £99 cheaper than before. To get the deal you’ll need to lay out £10 a month on the new HD Mix package, on top of your standard deal. Set up will cost £60 for current customers and £30 for newbies.

If you want the standard Sky+ box, you can lay out the same £150, or £75 if you take up Sky’s broadband, talk or multiroom services.

This goes hand–in–hand with Sky’s new EPG, which we caught a glimpse of last month. As well as a redesigned system, you’ll be able to take a squizz at 18 HD channels, with 7,000 hours of output every month. That includes Premier League, Ryder Cup and England V South Africa in the cricket. Plus some National Geographic gubbins if you get bored of all that sport.

"Set up will cost £60 for current customers and £30 for newbies."

Hang on. Why are existing, loyal customers being penalised? Surely it should be the other way round?

yes they are! how can a Sky+ box cost the same as the Sky HD.

I've just had a look and they haven't changed it yet! Surely if you're already a customer the £60 shouldn't apply as they arent really putting anything in except the new box.

    Hi Guys

I've just spoken to the Sky Press Office and those prices are correct. Apparently this is "reflective of sending out an engineer more than once." Essentially they want to recoup the cost.

Seems a little strange to be honest, you'd think it would cost less to send an engineer a second time.

    Hope this clears it up

    Cheers

    Joe

Perhaps Sky customers should bombard Sky with requests and questions as too why existing customers have to pay the £60 installion fee.

I did this last night, tied up customer service rep for half an hour trying to get the installation at the same price as a newbie.

I was told the HD sytem requires a complete rewire of the system which justifys their charge, as we existing owners have already recieved our 1 and only incentive, when we joined Sky.

I too wish there was an alternative I definately would go elsewhere.

The price differences are usually because new customers are usually tied into a fixed term contract, whereas existing customers who may have expired their contracts can leave at any time.

Sky can recoup their costs from new customers over the 18 months of their contract.
