Philips pulls the plug on 3D TVs

20 Apr 2009

The TV-fest that is CES was awash with chatter about 3D TV this year but our chums at What Hi-Fi Sound and Vision have found out that Philips, one of the main players, has decided to abandon its 3D TV development. The Philips 3D TV's main selling point (if it ever went on sale) was its ability to produce 3D images without the need for oh-so-stylish 3D specs – something that manufacturers have been struggling with for ages.Philips has pumped millions of euros into its WOWvx technology, but has now decided that 3D TV at a sensible price for the masses is a long way off.But don't lose hope, future fans – Panasonic continues its quest to bring 3D TV to market next year so you could be watching next year's Doctor Who Easter special in the third dimension. But you'll probably need a tardis-esque wallet to afford it.In the meantime, you can read about 3D TV at CES, and Stuff.tv's 3D TV Fast Facts

What do you think? Is 3D TV a waste of time, or the pinnacle of TV tech?

Its a complete waste of time and effort. I'd rather see a more user friendly projection system in the short term. Longer term, I want a star trek holosuite..... with porn!

i've got a feeling it's one of those things where you'd hear about it and be a bit 'meh' and then you'd experience it and it'd actually be £#@%ing awesome. for games, anyway.

I'm not a big fan of 3D at the cinema. Something about the way the glasses work, makes me feel like I'm watching a small screen rather than a large one. I'm with Max, I'd rather see better development in an immersive virtual system, like the old VR stuff back in the '90s.
