This weekend plays host to that glitziest of glamfests – the 82nd Academy Awards.

However, the hot tip this year is that Kathryn Bigelow's low budget Baghdad bomb dispose-a-thon The Hurt Locker is set to edge out James Cameron's spectacular, but light on plot, 3D epic Avatar.

First up, sci-fi turn-of-century-and-end-of-world thriller, Strange Days (1996). A former LAPD vice cop receives a hyper-real recording of a brutal murder, opening up a fast-paced fight to stop the end of civilisation.

Then there's the westem-cum-vampire flick, Near Dark (1987), in which a man is taken reluctantly into a travelling family of vampires, including Bill Paxton. Neck-biting and gunplay in abundance.

And finally, the out-and-out classic surf movie thriller, Point Break, which sees Keanu Reeves play overconfident rookie cop Johnny Utah, out to catch some bad guys via the medium of surfing. So good that it's almost enough to forgive Keanu Reeves his Matrix-related sins.
